e sure started the month off with a
bang. There were 34 present at our
April 6th meeting which included
six guests. It is great to have so many new faces at our monthly meetings. We welcome each
of you and look forward to them becoming a
part of the Tar Heel Detachment. It was great to
have Young Marine Cooper Johnson in attendance. He is the Division Three Young Marine
of the Year and will be in Las Vegas in May
going for the title of National Young Marine of
the Year. Cooper is an outstanding young man
and we know he will do well. Also, joining us
was the outstanding graduate from the NROTC
program at NC State. He will become an officer in the Marine Corps after graduation. The
Detachment will present him his officers sword
at the graduation ceremony at the NC State Bell
Tower in May. Congratulations to Brendan
Mazaleski and we wish him a huge success
with his Tour of Duty.
April is a great month with the warming of the
weather and the beautiful flowering new
growth. It is also the month of our semi annual
breakfast fundraiser at the Golden Corral in
Fuquay. It is a great deal as everyone gets a
regularly priced $11.95 plus tax meal for a donation of $10, of which the Detachment gets to
keep $5. It is an all you can eat buffet. We
need everyone to help out. So if you were not
at the meeting to get tickets just call me 919602-4483 and I will get the tickets to you.
Also, on April 23rd Devil Dog Pound #210 will
have a Growl at the doghouse of PDD Jeffrey
Jones, 11870 Lodge Road, Middlesex, NC
27577. This is open to all current Devil Dogs
and any member of the Tar Heel Detachment
that has been in the League for at least one year.
Those that wish to attend, we can carpool after
our breakfast at the Golden Corral.
The Tar Heel Detachment would like to give a
big “Thank You” to James Niver for serving as
our Detachment Chaplin for the past two years.
We thank him for his dedication and for the
outstanding articles of inspiration he has submitted to our Scuttlebutt. This issue will be his
last submission (unless we can get him to submit some guest articles). Jim will
continue his presence but he feels
he needs to take a break. At the
same time, thanks to Jason Hall for
stepping up to assume the duties of
Chaplin beginning with our May meeting. We
look forward to his contributions to the Tar
Heel Detachment.
The 23 new recruits for the Young Marines will
culminate their 13 weeks of training the weekend of April 15th to 17th with their campout on
the farm of Detachment member John Skuce.
Upon this completion they will officially become Young Marines at their graduation ceremony, Monday, April 18th. Location of ceremony is Hope Community Church, 821 Buck
Jones Road, Raleigh, NC 27606. Each member
of the Detachment is invited to join them for
this momentous occasion and show them our
support.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 14 th, as
Gayle and John Dilday are opening up their
backyard for the third annual Pig Pickin’ for
Detachment families and the Young Marines
and families to gather for a social event of getting to know each other better. It will begin at
1600 and extend until ?? This will be a great
opportunity for good food, family fun and fellowship. We hope to see you. 812 White
Meadows Dr., Fuquay Varina, NC 27526.
We also hope to have some other family events
during the year, including an ice cream and watermelon party in July, an old fashion hot dog
roast by a bonfire in September and once again
having the open house Christmas party in December. More details will be published later.
Plans are being finalized for our 24th annual
Memorial Day ceremony on May 30th to honor
our deceased veterans and their families. Tyrone Ashe with the help of many of you is putting together an outstanding agenda. So pass
the word out to your families and friends and
invite them to come out and pay tribute to those
that paid the ultimate price to this great country
of ours and the freedoms we enjoy.
Also on Friday, May 27th we have been asked to
provide color guards for a ceremony to be held
at each of the Hospice Centers in the area. This
will be for veterans and others who are terminally ill and in the care of Hospice. We will
need a Few Good Men to present the colors, so
when asked please help out. It will be a short
30 minute program.
The Department of NC Marine Corp League
State Convention will be held in Gastonia the
weekend of June 10-12. A banquet will be held
the evening of June 11th. All members of the
MCL and spouses are invited to attend. This
will present a great opportunity to take your

Commandant John Dilday of the Tar
Heel Detachment and Commandant Pete
Lambert of the Air Land and Sea Detachment along with Marines Russ Oliver and Bob Peters attend a Flag Raising
in Wake Forest at the City Hall in
memory of Col Richard Maxey USMC
on April 4th. Col Maxey was a former
member of the Tar Heel Detachment.
Tar Heel Detachment 733 newly installed Officers met with Commandant Dilday at his home on March 17th in meeting the detachment By Laws. Before the meeting Gayle Dilday cooked a wonderful Irish meal to celebrate the day! The staff met to
discuss the upcoming year’s activities, fundraisers and budget. Present were: Commandant John Dilday, Judge Advocate
James White, Paymaster James Cox, Sgt-At-Arms Ed Romanoski, Adjutant Suellen Beaulieu, Jr Past Commandant Andrew
Blizzard, Public Affairs Coordinator Jim Lewis and Past Commandant, DVC and DoNC Chief of Staff John Staley. Not present were Sr Vice Commandant Bruce Goeden and Jr Vice Commandant Tyrone Ashe. Among the many ideas that were
brainstormed by the group were several new fundraising ideas and goals to be presented at the April meeting.
Commandant’s Comments continued
spouse to the mountains and enjoy a weekend of fun and fellowship with fellow Marines. (Details are sent to you via email)
Many of your wives are joining together for a ladies night out on
the same evening of our monthly meeting. This is becoming a
huge success for getting together for food, fun and getting to
know each other better No planned agenda, just a night off from
cooking and doing the dishes, So if you want more information
contact Gayle Dilday at 919-602-2068.
The Tar Heel Detachment is a strong and vibrant organization
and it is all because of you. So when you meet a fellow Marine
invite them to join us at one of our meetings, such as what one of
our newest members did recently. William Cargill and his wife
Judy saw a Marine with a Marine ball cap in a parking lot. So
they went over and spoke to him, inviting him to our next meeting. Not knowing the address they just said it would be held at
the Lutheran Church in Cary. So at our meeting this month, Dan
Gallagher and his wife Tammy looked up the addresses of Lutheran churches in Cary and drove around until they found the
one that had cars with Marine stickers. Once they found us, they
came in. Such was the case of meeting J’Metria Anderson at
Bath and Body Works last Christmas and after finding out both
she and her husband, Arthur, were Marines, they were invited to
come to our meeting. Bruce Goeden, through his work at the
DMV has invited many Marines to join us. This is also the case
with Earl Linthicum as he meets Marines at each of the gun
shows. There are many ways to come in contact with Marines to
invite them to come out for good food and that Marine camaraderie.
Last but not least, ask your friends and family members to join us
at our breakfast fundraiser at Golden Corral on April 23 rd from 8
to 10:30.
Have a great and blessed month.

I would like to join my fellow marines in wishing a happy 75th anniversary of the
battleship’s commissioningG of the USS North Carolina
FREE WITH BATTLESHIP ADMISSION
Come celebrate the Battleship’s 75th anniversary on Saturday April
9, 2016, as active duty personnel from Camp LeJeune bring the ship
to life from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Working with the Battleship’s Living History Crew and the US Marine Corps Historical Company,
Sailors from the 2d Marine Division and Marines from the 2d Tank
Battalion will interpret the Battleship for visitors. According to
LCDR Jason M. Constantine, Battalion Chaplain and one of the
event organizers, “This is a unique event in which Marines and Sailors from the 2d Marine Division are volunteering their own time to
share their maritime services' history and heritage with the fine people of Wilmington.” Award winning East Burke High School Jazz
Ensemble will also perform patriotic music throughout the day in
commemoration of the event. Join the North Carolina Azalea Festival Official Party Entourage, which includes Queen Azalea Anna
Kooiman, the Queen’s Court, and Official Invited Guests at 1:00
pm as they wish the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA a happy birthday by cutting the official Showboat cake on board. “We are proud
to be a part of this very important celebration honoring the history
of the Battleship North Carolina,” says 69th Azalea Festival President Robby Collins. “The Battleship and the Festival have worked
closely to support each other for many years, and we are excited to
be such a big part of this celebration.” Come be apart of the fun and
express your gratitude to these fine service personnel. On April 9,
1941, in New York Navy Yard, the U. S. Navy commissioned United States Ship NORTH CAROLINA officially into the U. S. fleet.
NORTH CAROLINA was the first American battleship to be commissioned since December 1923. With war already waging in Europe and the Pacific, Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox proclaimed
during the commissioning ceremony, “The NORTH CAROLINA is
one of a new line of ships that will give the United States unchallenged supremacy on the seas.” Orders were read, the colors (U.S.
flag) and commission pennant were raised, the watch set and the
battleship was placed in commission. Admiral Alfred Ward, then
Commander Ward, NORTH CAROLINA’s Gunnery Officer, recalled years later: “We were in the New York Shipyard, getting the
ship ready to go to war. The people in the shipyard had the same
feeling that I had and that I still have about the wonderful ship
NORTH CAROLINA. Every man of that crew in Brooklyn worked
just as hard as he could to make it a going concern. The commissioning ceremony in New York City was a really electric and satisfying event. The ovation that ended the celebration was a tribute to
a bunch of hard-working people. Our sailors were ready to go out to
do whatever had to be done to win that war. And they did it. They
really did it.” At the time of her commissioning on 9 April 1941,
she was considered the world’s greatest sea weapon. Armed with
nine 16-inch/45 caliber guns in three turrets and twenty 5-inch/38
caliber guns in ten twin mounts, NORTH CAROLINA proved a
formidable weapons platform. Her wartime complement consisted
of 144 commissioned officers and 2,195 enlisted men, including
about 100 Marines. During World War II, NORTH CAROLINA
participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of
operations and earned 15 battle stars.

W
ell, I have completed my tenor as Chaplain. I
was concerned at first that this sinner would
not last in this role because of lighting bolts
from the sky and the justifiable vengeance of the Almighty for my presumption. Moreover as many of the
even most pious have noted, many questions of my ability
to perform the duties have arisen, which fortunately however have been surmounted. I have also learned innumerable things such as:
1- That when saying grace you need to say not only "Bless
this food we are about to eat", but also may need to include "Could You also add a little more flavoring to the
food with this blessing?"
2- That you may know many good prayers about
"Delivering us from evil", but that you really never know
how quickly it may take for them to work.
3- That "Oh Lord, not him again!' is not really a prayer.
4- That, no, Charley Chaplin was not a Chaplain !
5- That God never gets to retire, and is continuously
watching.
6- That the problem is that people assume you are a good
listener and often want to tell you stuff.
7- That if God had a baseball team, He would certainly
have all of game's stars. Unfortunately, Satan may have
all the umpires !
8- That I've also heard good news and bad news. The
good news is that there will be a baseball game in heaven
soon. The bad news is that I may be there to watch.
9- That I've been told that each of my Scuttlebutt articles
is better than the next."
10-That "Ask and it shall be given to you." is a quote from
Saint Mathew and not from Santa Claus.
11- That I can't find any sin that is truly original.
12- That to love thy neighbors as thyself includes your
enemies. That may not be too bad if you live long
enough, since that they will then necessarily decrease,
with time, in number. Unfortunately so will many of your
friends.
13- That you can pray to win the lottery, but you also have
to buy a ticket.
14- That to write a passable Scuttlebutt article, I have to
go to church and listen to a sermon.
15- That it is not naughty to say Amsterdam Avenue and
you do not have to change it to Amsterdarn.
16- That when a group of people, who all agree, drive
around together, it has to be in a Honda, because they are
all in Accord.
It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as Chaplain,
and I want to thank everyone for their support and forbearance.

75th Anniversary of the Original Jeep Patent
E
arlier on April 7, 2016 the United States Patent and Trademark Office tweeted a note reminding us that on this date 75
years ago the original Jeep patent was issued. Issued on April
7, 1942, United States Patent No. 2,278,450, is titled Military vehicle
body. The ‘450 patent generally relates to a “small car vehicle body
having convertible
features whereby it is
rendered particularly
desirable for military
purposes.” The patent describes the
purpose of the vehicle
is to essentially create
an automobile equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife. The patent explains:
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a convertible small car body so arranged that a single vehicle may be interchangeably used as a cargo truck, personnel carrier, emergency ambulance, field beds, radio car, trench mortar unit, mobile anti-aircraft
machine gun unit, or for other purposes.
The inventor listed on the patent is Byron Q. Jones, a Colonel in the
United States Army, although it seems that Colonel Jones was likely
not the actual inventor.
When it became clear that the United States would likely be forced at
some point to enter World War II, the government sent out a request
for proposals to 135 companies. The government was looking for a
multi-purpose four-wheel-drive vehicle. Only American Bantam Car
Company responded to the request within the given time, which was
just 49 days to produce a working prototype. The government was
impressed with Bantam’s design and shared the blueprints with several other companies, which not surprisingly soon followed with their
own very similar designs. Adding insult to injury, the government
applied for a patent in the name of Colonel Jones, as the inventor,
despite the fact that he did not work on the design of the vehicle.
Who was the person who truly invented the Jeep? The real and true
inventor was almost certainly Karl Probst, who was brought on by
Bantam to assist with the design project in 1940. Probst is said to
have designed the first Jeep in only two days time.
