Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Tahoe excitement for you to
enjoy – shows, events, music, happy
hours, snowmobile tours, skiing and
boarding, shopping, gaming, and
more – can always be found in the
Lake Tahoe Entertainer.
Harrah's had G. Love & Special
Sauce for a fun party. Garrett Dutton,
with his magical charm and incredible
talent, mixes his style of Hip-Hop, Rap,
Blues, R&B, Funk, Rock and Jazz
for a tasty treat. From Philadelphia,
G. Love – on vocals, guitar and
harmonica – was influenced by the
Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Beastie Boys
and John Hammond. The girls love
him, and his star status is getting
bigger and bigger with the radio and
satellite airplay he gets all over. I met
him years ago when he was new and
playing North Shore. This cool guy is
on to a big career.
It was great to have Mickey
Thomas and Starship back in town.
What a voice and look for new music
coming from Mickey!
Legendary Eric Burdon & the
Animals will be at Harrah's March
20. From England, Burdon is 1964,
started making hits like “House of the
Rising Sun” and is part of the British
Invasion to come to the U.S. “Don’t
Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “We’ve
Gotta Get Out of this Place,” “It’s
My Life,” “Don’t Bring Me Down” and
“San Franciscan Night” are just a few
of their many classic rock hits. I met
Eric in the late 90s and he was really
nice to all the fans after his show. This
is music history to check out – you’ll
love it and in his late 60s now, he still
loves it, too.
Also coming to Harrah's is Rick
Springfield March 6. The ladies still
love Rick, and he puts on a highenergy show. This early 80's TV star
appeared on “The Young and the
Restless” and as Dr. Noah Drake on
“General Hospital” which helped his
popularity. The self-penned “Jessie’s
Girl” and “I’ve Done Everything for
You” (written by Sammy Hagar) made
him a big star in the music world in the
early 80s. “Don’t Talk to Strangers”
and “Love Somebody” were also big
hits. At 60, he looks and sounds great,
and it’s a fun show.
The Yardbirds March 13 will
bring all their Rock and Blues classic
numbers. They had a lot of hits you’ll
remember or didn’t know it was them
– classic early Rock that still sounds
good today.
March 27 brings The Celtic
Tenors, followed by The Dan Band
April 3, and Pablo Cruise April 10.
VEX Nightclub on Friday and
Saturday is always a party with sexy
Go-Go Girls, dancers, and cool DJ
music.
MontBleu had Les Claypool.
Another 2,000 crowd sellout – what a
following he has! He mixes a TechnoJazz-Funk sound with wild lyrics and
great musicians. The cello guy can
really rip it up.
Opal and BLU Nightclubs have
Go-Go-Girls, lots of drink specials,
DJs and live music to check out.
The Improv at Harveys with new
comics each week and Howie as the
host is always good for laughs.
Lakeside Inn had their Ullr’s
Jib Jam with skiers and boarders
doing their best tricks on the rail that
was brought in. They had live music,
a DJ, food and drinks, and a party
atmosphere that was fun for the whole
family. Catch their Happy Hour from
4-7 p.m. with $1 food specials, one-,
two-, and three-dollar drinks, and their
$5 burger and fries special.
The Beacon Bar & Grill with the
lake and mountain views had their
Snowshoe Cocktail Races. Mix live
music, drinks and food, and it’s a
good time and pretty fun to watch, or
you can participate and win prizes.
March 10 are the next races.
Applebee’s has a cool bar with
great Happy Hour specials from 3-6
and from 9-closing. Great deals on
good food. The girls who work there
are lots of fun.
Sam’s Place had their Superbowl
party that’s been going on for decades.
They have video poker, pool table,
Happy Hour, and their new shrimp
linguine for $12 with soup or salad is
outstanding. Their female bartenders
add to the fun.
Check out Off the Hook with their
Happy Hour specials – delicious!
Chevy’s, another great Happy
Hour place, has good food and drink
specials from 4-7.
For all your smokin’ needs,
Puffin’ – in the Heavenly Village –
has it for you. What an incredible cigar
selection!
Fire & Ice – also in the Heavenly
Village – features drinks by the fire
pit. Inside, you create your own food
masterpieces for them to cook for you.
They have a huge selection to choose
from.
Go to Turn 3 to see Sarah and
her 16 TVs for sports and drinks.
Blue Turtle Seduction from Tahoe
will be at Whiskey Dick’s for St. Paddy’s
Day. Check out all the parties for that
holiday at EntertainerTahoe.com.
And remember, I’m here to help
you have fun. So, have fun – you’re
in Tahoe!
Fly Fishing
March is setting up to be a classic
month of trout fishing on the East
Walker River in Nevada with water
conditions being just about perfect!
This is always one of my favorite
times of the year for dry fly fishing and
a little nymphing as well. The East
Walker River is a tailwater and has
controlled flows that lately have been
flowing quite well. When the flows
are between 100 CFS and 600 CFS is
when the fish tend to spread out and
the river is a bit easier to fish. When
the flows get over about 350 CFS, it
becomes a bit tougher to wade but
still very fishable from one side or the
other. When the flows are below 100
CFS, the fish stack up in the holes
and are spookier. My favorite flows
are in the 100-300 CFS range, which
is very wadeable, and access is great
from either side of the river. The
sections that I like to fish are on the
Rosachi Section of the East Walker
River in Nevada and accessible from
a dirt road heading to Hawthorne off
of hwy 338. Park in the main parking
area just before the bridge and fish
either upstream or down, both are
equally good.
This is the time of year that we
see the Squalla Stonefly hatch and
on cloudy days the Baetis hatch (Blue
Wing Olive/ BWO). The Squalla Stone
is about a size 10 Stonefly and the
Nymph has a lightly colored bottom
and a dark olive top. One of the
things I have noticed this year is that
the Nymphs, when knocked off of the
rocks, tend to tumble down the river
and flash the light bottom and dark
top. Some of the patterns we have
been trying are dark and others light
with the latter working much better
and I think it is because the fish are
used to seeing the Nymphs roll down
the river and showing the lighter side.
It is quite difficult to get a fly to tumble
or twist as it makes its' way down
the current so using a fly that has a
dark and a light side doesn't seem to
matter as much as just using a lightly
colored fly. Not exactly scientific, but
just the same, it works! -This might
be the same old thing for those who
have been fishing the East Walker
for many years, but I have seen more
Stoneflies under rocks this year than I
have seen in years.
With the nice weather we saw
in February, the stones had already
started to hatch and I am sure they
will fill in droves over the next couple
of weeks of March. If it is windy, don't
be afraid to give it a try! The wind
tends to dislodge the stones from
the bushes where they are waiting
for their opportune time to mate and
blows them into the water ahead
of there scheduled evening mating
session. The trout will sit just off
of the banks waiting for their right
moment to ambush a nice meal. Also
look for the fish to be sitting in heavy
water eating the nymphs and keeping
an eye out above for the occasional
Adult Stone to float by. Some of my
favorite patterns to imitate the Squalla
Stone Nymphs are Mercers Epoxy Biot
Stone, Anderson Rubber Leg Stone,
Double Bead Stone and The Epoxy
Back Golden Stone. If you would like
to try to get them on the dry fly, try a
Stone Dead Stone or a Rubber Leg
Stimulator in Orange, Yellow or Olive
and in size 8 or 10. The other bug
that is fun to fish this time of the year
is the BWO and is always better on a
Victor Babbit
cloudy/snowy day. The BWO can be
fished as a Nymph or a Dry and some
of my favorite patterns are the Master
Baetis, Copper Bead Micro May,
Beerhead Baetis and the RS2 in gray
or olive for under the surface. And
for the surface or dry fly enthusiasts
I would try fishing with a fly as simple
as a Para-Chute Adams, Baetis Dun
or a Crippled Baetis in sizes 18-22.
If the East Walker is not doing well,
there is always the West Walker River
in Wilson Canyon or Hoye Canyon on
either side of Smith Valley. This river
has some really nice fish in it but is
not catch and release and tends to get
fished out after awhile.
For more information on these
rivers or any others in our area,

Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly
Let's check out what I have coming
up in Tahoe for you. Now we all know
Tahoe Locals need no excuse to party
like Rock Stars! Its pretty much what
we do best! But it always gets better
when a Holiday is thrown into the mix,
and a drinking one nonetheless, right?!
This St. Paddy's Day is no exception
and Late-Nite Productions will be
hosting the Hottest St. Paddy's Party at
the Lake! The Green Beer and Cheep
Drinks will be flowin' and Blue Turtle
Seduction will be rockin' all night long!
Tahoe's hardest working jam-grass
party band will be at it again for their
second St. Paddy's Day Blowout at
home in a row. Last year the Party was
sold to capacity and we had to turn
people away, so get your tickets early!
They are only $10 in advance and this
is going down at Whiskey Dicks on
March 17th!
When Blue Turtle Seduction
played their first show in 2001 it was...
well... rough around the edges, sloppy,
chaotic, and ... one hell of a great time.
From the beginning there was a raw
and original sound, a clear and intense
vibe, and the energy was through the
roof.
It was the rebellious outdoor spirit
of South Lake Tahoe, CA (work hard,
play harder) wrapped into electric
guitar and mandolin; harmonica,
harmonies, and adrenaline; drums,
bass, and violin.
Fast forward to 2007 and find a
band that dedicated itself to practice
and playing as many shows as
possible to polish that rough sound into
something that has been winning fans
over night after night from small town to
big city, from Hawaii to New York City,
and from dive bar to famous theatres
all while marching to beat of their own
drummer.
And while the big question spreads
from mouth to mouth, "What kind of
music is it?!" The band and fans alike
scratch their head and offer, "Well its
jam-newgrass?, how about gypsy
rock?, no its Duran Duran meets String
Cheese Incident, meets the Clash ...
no its not, its Blind Melon meets the
Samples... forget it, just come to the
show!
Next up and just in time for Spring
Break! We can't take you to Jamaica,
but we can bring the vibe to Tahoe! I'm
talking about the California Reggae &
Hip-Hop sounds of the Mystic Roots
Band, originally from Chico, CA. You
may have also seen them as the official
touring backing band for International
Reggae Superstar Paton Banton on
one of several National Tours! This is
going down on Sunday, March 21st at
Whiskey Dicks and Aivar will open
the show.
Serving up an original style based
in reggae, hip-hop, and dancehall (with
overtones of rock, funk, and ska),
a Mystic Roots Band live concert
guarantees not just at music for your
ears, but also a high-energy show and
powerful experience you'll never forget.
This Chico-born, now San Diego-based
group brings a brand new sound while
embracing the nature of roots reggae
wholeheartedly and performing it with
smooth vocals/harmonies, energetic
freestyles and beat-boxing, all over a
solid groove. The music and lyrics are
catchy and upbeat, yet with a powerful,
positive message. The musicianship
of the players is top notch and
arrangements are often complex and
always interesting. The band tours the
U.S. full-time, playing shows with some
of the biggest names in reggae, hip hop,
and rock. MRB promotes positivity and
spreads a conscious message while
still having a good time and keeping
the party going.
To wind down the month of
March we bring you the Intelligent
and Illuminating Hip-Hop sounds of
Sweatshop Union from Vancouver,
Canada. With tens of thousands of
albums sold and hundreds of shows
rocked, the word of mouth is spreading
about Sweatshop Union's style of
conscious lyrics, highly musical beats,
and high energy live shows that far
surpass the average hip hop concert.
Campaigning to create awareness
for their fourth album Water Street,
Sweatshop are embarking on their most
extensive phase of touring ever, hitting
over 100 cities across North America in
just over 4 months and coming back to
Whiskey Dicks on March 26th.
Don't forget every Tuesday is $2
Tuesday at Whiskey Dicks, with no
cover and $2 well and domestics for
everyone from 9-11pm. DJ-Bird will be
rockin' the party.
Till next time Tahoe, you know
what to do! Keep the Vibe Alive! Peace.
~LateNiteBilly

About Bassnectar
What started back in the mid
nineties as an experiment fusing
youth culture and social action has
turned into a multi-faceted, multifaced creature called Bassnectar.
It is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton,
and it exists as an open-sourced
musical project that is as diverse as
it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous,
and as fierce as it is imaginary.
The Huffington Post writes,
“Bassnectar…combines
beats
and brass-lines across genres,
rhythms, and time signatures to
create infectiously raw, danceable
tunes, connecting youth culture
with social action.”
Josh Glazer of URB Magazine
