Transitions
Transitions and the
Importance of Supporting
Caregivers
• 65.7 million caregivers make up
29% of the U.S. adult population
providing care to someone who
is ill, disabled or aged.1
As many of you are aware, Keiro
has been in the process of
transition. During this transition we
have emphasized that our mission
“to enhance the quality of senior life
in our community” will continue
into the future. I wanted to take the
opportunity to elaborate on how
Keiro’s mission remains the same
during and after the transition.
• The value of unpaid family
caregivers will likely continue to
be the largest source of longterm care services in the U.S.,
and the aging population 65+
will more than double between
the years 2000 and 2030,
increasing to 71.5 million from
35.1 million in 2000.2
Since the beginning, central to
Keiro’s purpose for being has been
our focus on the needs of caregivers.
While much of the attention has
been paid to residents, family
caregivers have benefited as much,
or even more, from the work that
we do. The focus on caregivers
remains the same as we transition
except that we expand our attention
to caregivers at home as well as
family caregivers of residents in
facilities. Why are caregivers at
home so important? Most of you
who have been caregivers will
understand the challenges that
go with caregiving. While we
serve approximately 3% of our
community needing care through
our facilities, another 97% are
receiving care from family members
at home. It makes sense to us to
turn our attention to that large
group of caregivers at home.
According to facts collected by the
Family Caregiver Alliance:
• More women than men are
caregivers: an estimated 66% of
caregivers are female. One-third
(34%) take care of two or more
people, and the average age of a
female caregiver is 48.0.3

• 70% of working caregivers suffer
work-related difficulties due to
their dual roles.4
• Caregivers suffer loss of wages,
health insurance and other job
benefits, retirement saving or
investing, and Social Security
benefits-- losses that hold
serious consequences for the
“career caregiver.” A reported
37% of caregivers quit their jobs

The challenge of supporting caregivers at home dwarfs the need for
institutional care and is expected to dramatically increase in decades
to come. Caregivers at home are the United States’ first line of care
delivery and pose interesting challenges in how to reach and support
them. Our mission in the next decade is a mission of discovery
which we hope will benefit our community first and foremost,
and eventually the larger public as aging and caregiving become
increasingly important in the national discussion on meeting the
needs of an aging society.
We thank you for your continued interest in our work and we value
your continued support of our efforts.

Keiro and Pacific Companies issued a joint statement on June 2, 2015, reprinted here:
Pacifica Companies in Escrow to Acquire Keiro Facilities
Keiro Senior HealthCare, a not-for-profit organization dedicated
to enhancing the quality of senior life through four care facilities
and programs to help people stay healthy at home, and Pacifica
Companies LLC, a private California based company that owns
and operates senior residential facilities, are pleased to announce
that they have entered into an agreement for the purchase of
Keiro’s four care facilities – Keiro Nursing Home, South Bay
Keiro Nursing Home, Keiro Intermediate Care Facility, and Keiro
Retirement Home.
This announcement follows a process initiated by Keiro leadership
during which a variety of options were explored to continue
serving the changing needs of the Japanese community.
“Securing the right buyer who understands and respects Keiro’s
history and unique cultural approach was critical to moving
forward in the process,” said Shawn Miyake, President and Chief
Executive Officer of Keiro Senior HealthCare.
At this time, Keiro and Pacifica have signed an asset purchase and
sales agreement. The date of transfer of existing operations will
occur following licensing and other regulatory approvals.
“While the decision to sell our facilities has been personally
difficult for many, particularly for those of us who have been
involved with the organization for many years, the board and
leadership take seriously our responsibility to be wise stewards of
our community resources and commitment to serve the evolving
needs of our community.” said Gary Kawaguchi, chairman of the
Keiro Senior HealthCare Board of Directors.
Keiro will continue to serve the community of seniors and
caregivers throughout the transition and in the future through
programs and services that support older adults to age with
independence and dignity.
For additional information and updates regarding the transition
please visit Keiro’s website www.keiro.org/updates
“We are committed to continuing these important services and
appreciate Keiro’s outstanding work in support of the Japanese
community for over a half century,” said Adam M. Bandel, Pacifica
Companies’ Managing Director, Seniors Housing. “We appreciate
the opportunity to build on Keiro’s legacy and look forward to a
smooth transition.”

Volunteer Profile
Lillian Kitagawa & Jeff Murakami
Teacher Lillian Kitagawa and her grade school student
Jeff Murakami reconnect and share the joys of
teaching and volunteering as Keiro Lifelong Learning
Course Facilitators.
Class photo from 1969-70. Jeff is in the front row, Miss Hata (Lillian) is on the right
Over four decades ago, a young Jeff Murakami
entered Lillian Hata’s elementary school class as
a second grader. Fast forward to 2013 when Jeff
started facilitating Keiro’s Memory Kai course in the
South Bay and heard that another facilitator, Lillian
Kitagawa, remembered him as a former student. Not
recognizing the last name, Jeff did a bit of research
and realized he had a grade school teacher with the
first name Lillian but a different last name. A brief
email exchange between the two confirmed their
connection. Meeting over breakfast they agreed to
jointly facilitate Keiro’s Memory Kai course together
and to date the pair has completed three sessions
of this evidence-based program for participants at
Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute.
Both facilitators enjoyed professional careers in
education. Lillian has been retired from teaching
for 13 years and served as primary caregiver for her
parents. After settling their affairs, she wanted to do
something to serve the community and read about the
Memory Kai facilitator training in Keiro’s Umbrella
of Care. By becoming a facilitator she could not only
help the community, but could also benefit from the
content, reinforcing her memory in the process.
6
Umbrella of Care Spring/Summer 2015
Jeff retired early from working in student affairs at
USC and has been actively involved with Gardena
Valley JCI. He also responded to a Keiro call for
volunteers to be trained as a facilitator. Like Lillian,
Jeff recognizes the value of the program content
and in looking ahead to supporting the needs of
his parents and others, considers his important
role in helping older adults to age well and live
independently for as long as they can.
When asked about what he gets out of being a
Keiro facilitator Jeff chuckles and responds,
“Facilitators get as much from it [as participants]…
and every time we facilitate a class, it reinforces the
techniques. It’s a helpful practice.” Lillian adds that
giving back to the community, along with creating
connections, is satisfying. “I think it’s a wonderful way
to learn by interacting and meeting with other people
who have the same interest and who are trying to
better themselves!”
“Every time
we facilitate
a class, it
reinforces the
techniques.
It’s a helpful
practice.”
Jeff and Lillian today
Keiro is grateful to Lillian and Jeff, and the hundreds
of volunteers who give so generously of their talents
and time to support Keiro’s health and wellness
programs to benefit our community.

Lifelong Learning with Keiro – Memory Kai
Memory Kai
Memory Kai is an innovative education program
that teaches practical techniques for enhancing
memory. Developed by the UCLA Longevity Center
and based on research conducted by Dr. Gary Small,
participants will:
• Learn methods to improve their memory
• Remember names and faces
• Recall numbers
• Discover factors that affect memory
Course Information
Memory Kai may be presented in various locations
in Los Angeles and Orange County.
• Classes meet four consecutive weeks for two
hours per session.
• Trained Keiro “coaches” facilitate in small group
settings in a lively interactive classroom.
• Classes use a multi-faceted approach to learning
presentations, group discussions, memory quizzes,
and homework assignments.
Who Should Attend
Adults, primarily 50 and older, who want to improve
or maintain their memory ability. It is not for people
with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.
Course fee: $50. Waived for Keiro participants and
made possible by the Keiro Endowment Fund.
Registration required. Space is limited.
Please Email [email protected] with the subject
“Memory Kai” and include your name, phone number,
and mailing address.
Our featured volunteers, Jeff and Lillian,
co-facilitate the Memory Kai Course
“The scientific evidence is compelling
that memory training techniques not
only improve everyday forgetfulness,
but they provide cognitive benefits
that can be sustained for years. Our
staff at the UCLA Longevity Center
is proud to have enjoyed a long-term
partnership with Keiro in offering
our Memory Enhancement Courses
in multiple locations throughout Los
Angeles and Orange Counties for
nearly a decade. Our mutual goal is
to help our community members live
longer and better.”
Gary Small, MD | Director, UCLA Longevity Center

Caregiver Support
Tips for Reducing Stress – SMILE!
According to the Family Caregiver’s Alliance, a
caregiver is an unpaid individual (a spouse, partner,
family member, friend, or neighbor) involved in
assisting others with activities of daily living and/or
medical tasks. And according to the 2009 California
Health Interview Survey conducted by UCLA, 25.3%
of Japanese American adults 50 years and older
who live in Los Angeles and Orange Counties are
caregivers. It’s surprising to see such a high number of
family caregivers within our community.

Managing another human being’s care and
coordinating the best care for them daily can be
difficult. The tremendous stress placed on caregivers,
can lead to uncomfortable feelings such as anger,
frustration, and sadness instead of peace and joy.
Do caregivers deserve peace and joy? Absolutely yes!
Below are things caregivers can do to reduce stress.
Just simply, SMILE:
Support one another and ask for support from family members.
Managing your stress and your own emotions is vital. Remember that as much
as your loved one’s quality of life is important, yOUR quality of life is as valuable.
Think about it, if you can’t manage yourself, how will you manage others?
including other family members and loved ones is essential. it’s important for
family caregivers to communicate, whether it is about your loved one’s level
of functioning, whether you need help, sharing your thoughts, etc. Although
it may be difficult to discuss this with family and loved ones through honest
communication about the realities of caregiving, having everyone on the same
page will reduce feelings of isolation and hopefully increase appreciation.
Did you know that studies show that laughter is the best medicine? it relaxes the
entire body, boosts the immune system, triggers the release of endorphins (the
body’s natural feel-good chemicals), and protects the heart by improving the
functioning of the blood vessels and increasing blood flow! it’s also contagious
and most importantly, increases happiness.
being a caregiver is a valuable thing. Remember that you are a strong individual,
and that by taking care of your loved one, you can help empower them to live a
fulfilling life. but don’t forget to take time for yourself too – whether by going for
a walk, listening to music, or attending a caregivers support group.
This article was originally published on
Keiro’s Genki Woman Blog. Please visit
www.genkiwoman.org for more
information on caregiving and support.
Be proud of yourselves as caregivers, continue to
love, be assertive, ask for help if needed, and also
remember to take some time for yourself!

Master the Art of Philanthropy
5 Ways to Make Your Gifts Go Further
When you donate to the organizations that are
close to your heart, make sure your dollars will
make a meaningful difference. By planning your
contributions, you maximize tax savings and make
a personalized impact on Keiro.
1.
2.
3.
Pocket the tax deductions. If you make a
donation to Keiro now, we both can benefit.
Your generosity enables Keiro to continue
working diligently toward fulfilling our mission
of enhancing the quality of senior life in our
community and you receive a federal income tax
charitable deduction when you itemize.
Keep your accounts intact. An easy way to
make a generous gift is to make a bank account
payable on death (POD)* to Keiro. The savings
are there for you if you need them during your
lifetime, after which we receive them to support
Keiro.
Eliminate the tax bite on retirement plan assets.
Taxes can consume a substantial portion of your
retirement plan assets after your lifetime. For
this reason, many people use their IRAs to make
gifts to charity, such as Keiro, eliminating the
taxation of these assets. (Visit our website www.
keiro.org for another article, “What Your IRA
Can and Can’t Do”)
4.
Boost your retirement income. A charitable gift
annuity can support Keiro and benefit you. This
type of gift can provide you with supplemental
income or go toward providing steady payments to
a loved one, and the remainder of the gift goes to
Keiro.
5.
Live now, give later. Many people consider gifts
through their estates the perfect way to provide
support because they are able to help a cause that
has meant a lot to them or a loved one without
immediately giving up assets.

your gifts go further?
Please contact Audrey Lee-Sung, Director of
Development & Communications, at

information, visit www.keiro.org.

*State laws govern payable-on-death accounts. Please
consult with your bank representative or investment
advisor if you are considering this gift.
