An Inspirational Year!
It’s been an inspiring and
transformative first year for University
President C. L. Max Nikias. At his
inauguration last fall, Nikias set
the audacious goal of bringing the
University of Southern California to
“undisputed status as one of the great
universities of the world.” Already, he’s
propelled USC towards his vision for
the future.
Moments
after
President
Nikias’ inauguration, USC received
two $50 million gifts, one from USC
trustee Ming Hsieh and the other from
trustee Wallis Annenberg and the
Annenberg Foundation, setting the
stage for Nikias’ momentous year. The
President has already raised close to $1
billion for the university, with historic
gifts of $200 million from David and
Dana Dornsife for the naming of the
College of Letters, Arts and Sciences,
$110 million from the Mork family for
an undergraduate scholarship program
and $150 million from the W. M. Keck
Foundation for the naming of USC’s
President and Mrs. Nikias

academic medical enterprise.
Beyond
the
university’s
enriched endowment, Nikias has also
overseen rich growth on the University
Park Campus. This past year, ground
was broken on the $70 million John
McKay Center, a state-of-the-art athletic
center containing a locker room for the
football program, academic center,
weight room and other facilities. Also,
thanks to a $15 million gift from Roger
and Michele Dedeaux Engemann,
ground was broken on a new and
much needed Student Health Center,
replacing a facility built in 1951. And
the new Marilyn & Jeffrey Katzenberg
Center for Animation, named for
DreamWorks Animation chief executive
officer Jeffrey Katzenberg and his wife,
is a valuable addition to the School of
Cinematic Arts Complex.
President Nikias’ ambitions
are global.

transforming USC into a major hub of
the Pacific, he led a delegation of USC
representatives to India in February to

A Message from
Jane Popovich
It has been a season of
extraordinary giving at USC. Thanks
to generous gifts from Associates
Dana and David Dornsife, the Mork
family and Roger and Michele
Dedeaux Engemann, we have a
newly named College of Letters,
Arts and Sciences, an elite new
undergraduate scholarship program
and a future state-of-the art student
health center. This is a transformative
period in USC history!
The
Associates’
faithful
commitment to the university is
remarkable and inspiring. Gifts of
every size, at every level are essential
to the success of USC. We are leading
the continued rise of this world-class
university.
As always, one of the great
joys of my position is seeing everyone
at our Associates events. I had a
wonderful time meeting so many of
you this past year and look forward
to seeing everyone at future events.
The next opportunity will be at our
first football picnic on September 3
as our Trojans take on the Minnesota
Gophers. It will be a great way to
celebrate the start of football season.
Also, please join us when we travel to
the Notre Dame and Colorado away
game picnics! This year we have an
extra treat for our members -- an
Associates coupon for 15% off USC
logo gifts and clothing at the USC
Bookstore. Look for it in your Picnic
invitation. It’s a great way to update
the entire family’s cardinal and gold
wardrobe!
It’s such an exciting time
to be part of the USC Associates.
The future of the Trojan family is
very bright. Enjoy the rest of your
summer and fight on!

open regional offices in Bangalore and
Mumbai. The new offices, joining offices
in countries including China, Japan
and Mexico, will give the university
an increased presence in nations that
will be pivotal to the development of
international commerce and culture
in the 21st century. The university also
expanded its reach within the United
States with a new regional office in
New York City and a new office in San
Francisco set to open later this year. The
new offices will increase USC’s visibility,
deepen USC connections and attract
support from around the globe.
Strengthening the elite status of
the USC academic community, President
Nikias appointed two Nobel Prize
winners to the USC faculty: Murray
Gell-Mann and Daniel McFadden.
Gell-Mann, renowned physicist, Nobel
Laureate and now Presidential Professor
of Physics and Medicine at USC, plans to
collaborate with cancer researcher and
USC professor of medicine, David Agus,
to discover new ways to understand
and treat cancer and other diseases.
Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel
McFadden, as a Presidential Professor of
Health Economics at USC, will examine
fundamental problems facing the
health care sector, looking specifically
at how consumers make choices about
health insurance and medical services.
With
the
historic
gifts,
prestigious new faculty and successful
events like the LA Times Festival of
Books, President Nikias’ tenure has
begun in an inspiring and productive
fashion. Add to that his enthusiasm in
meeting tens of thousands of Trojans
whether at Student Move-in Day, the
USC Associates Season Opener Picnic
or the USC Alumni Association Trojan
Family Receptions across the country
and he is sure to lead USC and the Trojan
Family towards an exciting future.

SPOTLIGHT
Jerry Herbst
Presidential Associate
USC Associates Trustee
Scholarship Recipient
While growing up in Orange
County, Omeed Anvar always admired
USC and hoped to one day have the
opportunity to attend the prestigious
university.
This dream became a
reality when he was accepted to USC
and awarded with the USC Associates
Trustee Scholarship.
Omeed, who will be a
sophomore in the fall, has eagerly
taken advantage of this opportunity.
He is pursuing an undergraduate
degree through the USC Marshall
School of Business with an added
concentration in pre-law. To challenge
himself academically, he’s opted to
take more rigorous general elective
classes through the honors thematic
option program.
Also a promising leader on
campus, he’s been very active in
the University Student Residential
Community government and will
assume the position of Vice President
of Advocacy for the organization
in the fall. His leadership activities
extend to the Greek community,
where he will soon begin serving
on the Interfraternity Council as a
representative of Phi Gamma Delta.
Omeed has already created
lifelong memories as a Trojan. Some
highlights include meeting President
Obama after his speech on campus
and attending many exciting USC
sporting events. He has especially
enjoyed displaying his Trojan Spirit at
football games. “The energy at the
tailgate gatherings and game is very
contagious. It’s a lot of fun to be a part
of it.”
The USC Associates Trustee
Scholarship has been essential in
realizing Omeed’s dream of attending
USC. “The Trustee Scholarship made
USC an option that wouldn’t have
otherwise been possible.
I can’t
imagine being anywhere else. I love it
here.”
He is truly honored and
proud to be a member of this worldclass university and looks forward to
becoming part of the strong alumni
network.
Thanks to all of the Associate
members whose annual contributions
and gifts to endowed scholarships help
support Omeed’s pursuit of academic
excellence.

Presidential Associate Jerry Herbst has consistenly
given every year for more than 30 years.
Gifts of every size matter to USC.
Without the loyal contributions of
people like Presidential Associate Jerry
Herbst, a member of the Associates
since 1978, it certainly would have
been impossible for USC to reach its
current heights.
Every year for more than 30 years,
Jerry Herbst has faithfully made a gift
to academics at the university. His
unfailing support has helped fund
our merit-based student scholarships,
prestigious faculty awards and
academic programs. Jerry has also
been a very generous supporter to
USC athletics.
As USC has grown and flourished,
so have Jerry Herbst and his family’s
business. In 1959, after graduating
from USC, Jerry Herbst became
president of Terrible Herbst Oil
Co., a company founded in the late
1930s by his father, Ed, a legendary
entrepreneur.
Upon taking over the business, Jerry
turned Terrible’s, with its famous
logo of a “terrible” cowboy wearing
a handlebar mustache and black hat,
into a Las Vegas icon. The company
now operates close to a hundred
service stations in Southern Nevada,
California, Arizona and Utah, with the
majority of its locations in and around
Las Vegas.
Jerry’s loyalty and commitment
embody the ideals of the USC
community. We are honored to have
him in the Trojan family.
UNIVERSITY HIGHLIGHT
The Engemann Family Student Health Center broke ground April 4, 2011.
Roger and Michele Dedeaux Engemann
Student Health Center To Open 2013
Thanks to a generous $15
million gift from Chairman Associates
Roger and Michele Dedeaux Engemann,
a new five-story, 101,000 square foot
health facility will open in Spring 2013
on USC’s University Park Campus.
“It’s kind of a dream come
true,” said Larry Neinstein, executive
director of the University Park Health
Center. “It’s taken 15, 16 years to get a
new facility.”
In replacing a facility that
opened in 1951, the Roger and Michele
Dedeaux Engemann Student Health
Center will better serve the needs of
the current USC community.
In addition to providing
unlimited primary and urgent care,
the center will offer comprehensive
counseling and health promotion
services, while also serving as home
to specialty clinics in dermatology,
orthopedics, oral health, allergy
and gynecology. It will also feature
laboratory and medical imaging
facilities, as well as a USC faculty and
staff clinic for the treatment of minor
health issues.
At the groundbreaking on
April 4, University President C. L. Max
Nikias characterized the importance of
the Engemann’s gift: “As USC becomes
increasingly residential, it is vital that
we have first-rate facilities for our
students. [The Engemanns] are creating
an outstanding legacy that will forever
touch the lives of Trojans. Roger and
Michele are a winning Trojan Team.”
Longtime membership in the
Trojan family gave the Engemanns
insight into the need for a new health
center. “We are now into our third
generation of students using that same
facility,” Michele said. She is a 1968
graduate of the USC School of Theater
and the daughter of USC alumni. The
Engemanns are also proud Trojan
parents. “Roger and I have a keen
understanding that this building is
needed and needed now.”
The Engemann Student Health
Center will increase students’ access
to important vaccinations and serve
as a vital resource for diet, weight
and exercise education. The building
will also be constructed to the highest

standards of sustainability with interior
spaces designed to maximize comfort,
privacy and efficiency.
With this generous gift, USC
will finally have a state-of-the-art
health center to go with its world-class
laboratories, libraries and classrooms.
Thanks to Roger and Michele, USC has
a very healthy future.
