REPORT

According to the flight
tracker website that Southwest Airlines has online
(available only in some of
their airplanes), I am sitting at an altitude of 38,000 feet,
traveling at 498 miles per hour. It’s fast. It doesn’t feel fast
when you are cramped in the tubular sardine can that they
call a passenger airplane. It’s still another hour and a half
until I get into Denver. After an hour layover, I’ll catch the
flight home to Portland. That’ll be another three hours and
I’ll arrive shortly before midnight.
I need some therapy. I need some two wheeled therapy. I
know that for most all of us, that therapy is the feeling of
escaping, that feeling of being in our own world, that time
to let everything happen while on two wheels. It’s a very
true saying, “For some there’s therapy, for the rest of us
there’s motorcycles.”
You may not be reading this in time, but the Season Opener
is June 6th-8th. This event is based out of the Best
Western—Cottage Grove Inn. Marty Johnson and anyone
else who joins him will be exploring the Aufderheide Hwy
and the Oregon Coast Range. They will also be feasting at
a BBQ at Clive’s place that Saturday. If it’s not too late,
ride down and join in the fun!
One very important date is coming up on Monday, June 16.
It is the World Wide Ride To Work Day. Here is an excerpt
from their website (ridetowork.org), “Commuting on this day
shows the positive value of motorcycles and scooters for
transportation. For hundreds of thousands of workers,
motorcycles and scooters are an economical, efficient and
socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy,
helps the environment and provides a broad range of other
public benefits. Motorcycling and scootering clubs around
the world encourage their members to ride to work on this
annual day.”
Put in for your vacation time now for our annual Baker City
Rally. It takes place the weekend of September 4th – 7th. I
am expecting that this will be the best Baker City Rally yet.
The event cost of $65 covers the Rally Welcome Packet,
Map package, Rally T-Shirt, Meet & Greet BBQ, Prime Rib
Dinner. Make your hotel reservations with the Best Western
Sunridge Inn. Whatever you do, please do not forget to pre
-register for the rally at Cascade Moto. Aug. 23rd is the
registration deadline if you want to make sure you get a
t-shirt.
Until next time, get out and get yourself some
awesome two wheeled therapy. It’ll do your mind, body
and soul some fantastic mega cool goodness.

BOB & ROCKIES’ AIRPORT TOUR 2014
Submitted by Ukiah Marcus (bike pictured on runway)
Well it’s time again to play the game. It’s a motorcycle
scavenger hunt that’s all about the Ride. Last year I won and I
didn’t even know there was anything to win. I just rode & rode
and rode and sent my pictures in first. Big win, Right?
The way the game is played is for $25.00 Oregon Airport
Tours 2014 (Bob & Rocky two triumph guys) supply you with a
secret list of 10 airports around the state. You ride to them
and take a picture of your bike on or near the runway. If you
get all ten within the time frame you get a finishers tee shirt. If
you don’t ……. No shirt for you! I suppose you can still come
to the end of season BBQ to grovel at the finishers t-shirt and
or make your excuses.
car, no people, lines of sight for miles and all those twists and
turns. Sound like fun Uh?
I think there is plenty of time left to sign up and earn the coveted finishers tee shirt for 2014 and to firm up your commitment to ride. You know, “ Not this weekend honey. I “have to”
get an airport in. I mean I HAVE to Finish, DON’T I?”
ENJOY THE RIDE!

When Bob first told me about this tour I imagined riding my
bike out on to Portland International‘s runways. I wondered
how I was going to do this without getting arrested. I puzzled
this challenge for a while …….. O.K. give me a brake after
all I am blonde.
When I actually got to the first airport , I laugh out loud because here is this official state sign designating an Official
State Airport. It was next to an asphalt drag strip in the
middle of no where. The ride getting there was beautiful. Not
only can you ride on many of the runways the asphalt calls you
to. Cause it just needs to feel some rubber baby! It’s been a
long time.
Some official state airports don’t even have asphalt. They are
just flat surfaces of mowed fields and official signs. Some
runways aren’t runways at all they are just a rode with a
hidden dual purpose (no state signs ). Like the rode in front of
Fields Station in Fields, Oregon with a population of 8ish.
Located near the southeast corner of Nevada and Oregon.
This whole in the wall ,in the middle of no where, is world
famous for it’s malted mike shakes. On any given weekend
during the summer you can see planes landing on the rode you
rode in on. Pulling up to the gas pumps, same ones you used,
and filling up. The only difference is the attendant has to use a
ladder to reach the gas cap on the plane. In the mean time the
pilot can be seen indulging in the most decadent Malted Mike I
have ever had. They come in a zillion flavors to boot.
What a trip (as we said in the 70’s ) and what a ride No cars,
no people, lines of sight for miles and all those twist and turns.
That’s what I call pure motorcycle heaven.
That was last year.
So far, this year, I just got back from touring some more
“Official Lonely Airports” in the middle of nowhere. With no

AHRMA IN SONOMA
Update from Jeff Brooks - Thruxton Racer
What's cool about Sonoma is that the facilities are 1st class and showers are
available. The $$$ in the area is evident; beautiful Audi pavilion with open wheeled race
cars for lease, several Ferrari transporters on site, and garages filled with big boy $$$$
toys. It was really fun to ride my little XL125 all over and explore.
Wednesday's 3Js track day is a charity event with great food, really friendly riders and
lots of helpful folks showing us the lines. The vintage and Thruxton bikes ran in B group as
there were some serious closing speeds in “A” group. Sonoma is a very hilly , twisty &
turny with lots of fun bits. Smooth riders (i.e. small bikes) do very well here. We all
added a few teeth to the rear sprocket compared with PIR.
Thursdays AHRMA practices and races went really well for me. There were 12 Thruxtons
from all over the country and it was evident there was some serious thoughts given to set
up. Paul Runion, Bobby Fong's crew chief, was brought in to help with Thruxton set up and
it was interesting seeing how much he could do by changing fork height, remapping (newer
bikes), etc. Turns out 10 years ago he worked for Triumph and soon realized he had set
up my bike! He emailed my VIN # to Triumph to confirm that I do have the Thruxton Cup
race bike #2, with several prototype bits on it. For example my exhaust was the
prototype for today's Predator system and was hand made. Paul told me the story of the
bike, knew the subsequent owners (I'm #4 counting Triumph) and told me it was painted
red to green in 2006. Pretty much my bike is set up about as good as it can be, except
maybe try putting 15w oil in the forks. With all that cool info I really flew during the race
and finished right behind the two pro riders, the journalists, the guys who were faster with
new bikes (OK, I was 8th) for a really good battle and good time.
Friday was similar except I stepped up and added Battle of the Twins formula 3, as there
were 4 other Thruxtons entered. The first wave was formula 1 which is basically open
twins, which in this case included big boy Ducatis and two AMA KTM superbikes prepping
for the weekend races. Needless to say it was great fun but all I saw was orange and
red blurs as they lapped me down the front straight. The Thruxton race was similar to
Thursday. One of the cool things about AHRMA is that the grids are actually very large
with all sorts of bikes mixed in. We were the 2nd wave and (in addition to 12 Thruxtons)
included air cooled BMWs, air cooled 1000cc 4 cylinders, Honda CB 750s etc. Once
things get rolling the bikes get sorted out pretty quickly and you end up duking it out with
a very cool variety of bikes.
Saturday was also a spectator day. Caught up with the DeBrinos and McDonoughs (local
OMRRA riders), attended the riders meetings and basically hung out in the pits. By this
time all the big AMA transporters were there, associated rock stars, etc. Pretty cool
watching Josh Hayes on his bicycle trainer before he goes out. The Triumph team was
there in force with their 675s. It was great to see the folks who had helped me the previous days prepping Bobby Fong's 675. Local OMMRA rider and friend Brian Pinkstaff is
the team electronics technician (an AMA spec 675 is complicated!). Bobby ended up 2nd
in the following day's races. I was able to watch Saturday's practices, qualifying and the
top club race, then hit the road to catch up with my rodeo niece in Etna (suburb of Yreka)
Sunday.
Next big road trip with the Thruxton will be Bonneville & Miller Motorsports in August.
