What is leaf mulching?

Available at most hardware stores.
Leaves only.
No limit to the amount of paper yard
waste bags used.
Bags must weigh less than 50 pounds.
These leaves will be composted.
Do not include garbage, branches, plants, soil, grass, etc.
Shredding leaves with a lawn mower, a mulching attachment, or a
leaf shredder.
How to use leaf mulch
Keep it on your lawn.
Mix it in your garden soil.

The same bags you use for garbage.
Plastic garbage bags
Save time & money: no need to rake or put leaves in bags.
Anything that is collected as garbage.
Improve your lawn and soil: adds nutrients, retains moisture, helps
prevent weed growth and compaction & erosion.
These count toward your weekly limit of
10 garbage bags.
Bags must weigh less than 50 pounds.
Put it on gardens & flower beds, and around trees & shrubs.

Tips for leaf mulching
These leaves will be landfilled.
When leaves will be collected
On your garbage days in November.
Keep mower blade sharp.
Set mower blade to 6.5 cm (2.5”) high.
Mow leaves when dry.
Mow when there is no more than 2.5 cm (1”) of fallen leaves
on the lawn.
Slowly push the lawnmower to ensure leaves are shredded.

Paper yard waste bags are required to participate
in the City of St. John’s curbside leaf collection
program during November 2014.

2. Curbside collection
We will collect them on your garbage days in November.
Use paper yard waste bags and the leaves will be composted which saves space
in the landfill and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Plus you can put out an
unlimited number of bags.
Use plastic garbage bags and the leaves will be landfilled. These count toward your
weekly limit of 10 bags of garbage.
3. Compost
If you have a backyard composter you can use dried leaves as the ‘brown’ layer.
Keep a few bags of dried leaves to use throughout the year, alternating with the
‘green’ layer.
4. Drop off
Bring leaves to the Robin Hood Bay Residential Drop Off, Tuesday to Saturday, 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. Both paper and plastic bags are accepted.
Leaves in paper bags are composted while those in plastic bags are put in the landfill.
