Welcome to our
Summer Reading Pals!
We’ve just recently completed Vacation
Bible School, and our building will ring
out with the voices of children again
beginning July 7. For two weeks in
July, All Saints’ will host Burton Hill
Elementary students who have been
selected
to take
part in our
Summer
Reading
Pals
program.
As part
of our
Community Outreach program, we
have been collecting books appropriate
for K-2 that will be used during the
program. While the students are here
for this fun day camp-like program, they
will work on reading and math skills
and enjoy fun, hands-on activities. The
children will be here in the mornings on
July 7-9 and again on July 14-16. For
more, contact Margi Ehle, Margehle@

Our pilgrims carry
memories back home
from their journey
J2A Pilgrimage to
Scotland
Our J2A pilgrims took some big steps this past
month, journeying far from home and family
to retrace the paths of some of the saints of the
Christian faith in Scotland. And as our pilgrims
found, that path took them on some vigorous
hikes through Scottish countryside and cities.
A good pair of hiking boots would have been a welcome traveling companion for any one of our
J2A Pilgrims. Here, the fastest hikers in the group are already atop of Arthur’s Seat, an extinct
volcano in Edinburgh. It was a steep climb, notes Mthr. Jordan Ware, and every one of our
pilgrims made it to the summit eventually.
Our Pilgrims look up toward St. Gile’s Presbyterian Church in
Edinburgh, on their official “Saints and Sinners Tour” of the city.
Wonder Voyage tour guide John Spencer, in the black T-shirt,
accompanied our group to all of its destinations.

For two days, our J2A Pilgrimage group
stayed on the island of Iona, where the Irish
abbott Columba began his mission to bring
Christianity to what we know as present-day
Scotland. While at Iona Abbey, Mthr. Ware
was able to celebrate a Eucharist for our group
in the church which dates from the 1200s. The
Abbey itself was founded in the 600s.
During the trip, our pilgrims stayed in youth
hostels next to other travelers and experienced
local food. Scotland’s famed haggis was served
for breakfast at the hostel in Inverness. The
All Saints’ group attended a weekday morning
worship service at St. Andrew’s Episcopal
Cathedral in Inverness, where the Scottish
woman serving was delighted to break
up the reserve host into smaller pieces to
accommodate a larger group.
Peter, the Scotsman in the gray sweater, was the tour guide for the Saints
and Sinners tour in Edinburgh. He pulled out villainous black masks during
a discussion of Deacon Brodie, a locksmith by day, but a burglar by night
who led a gang of thieves and was ultimately hanged for his crimes.
The island of Iona has been a center of Christian worship since Columba arrived in AD 563.
His monastery thrived for centuries, despite repeated Viking raids beginning in 795. The
church building has been in place since the 1200s. Our pilgrims had several opportunities to

Abbey, founded by St. Columba in the 6th century.
The group also attended an evening Justice and Peace service that attracted about 300. The
Abbey’s Justice and Peace services highlight an issue where humans are called by God to witness
for peace and justice. To learn more about Iona Abbey, visit www.iona.org.uk.

New water feature adorns
our Community Garden
Our Community Garden just gets better and better. A brandnew water feature is what lies behind the growing stone wall
that is seen from the street. The feature includes a tiny “lazy
river” that will accommodate living water plants. Scott Rector,
who is hosing down the pergola area, is the creative mastermind
behind the garden design.
