STATUS REPORT
The Solution
Families and entire communities can be transformed when compassionate individuals
reach out a caring hand and become involved. For this reason, Food For The Poor’s
development team has carefully analyzed the needs of Lotore. Based on their findings, a
community development initiative has been created that will benefit the area’s
desperately poor families.
GOAL: TO TRANSFORM THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF 25
FAMILIES BY PROVIDING THEM WITH PROPER SHELTER,
SANITATION, AND A WATER COMPONENT.
Father Chuck’s Challenge - Lotore Housing Development will fund the construction of
25 double housing units, each with sanitation and a water cistern. The project will also
fund the extra transportation costs needed for the construction materials that have to be
shipped to the island.
Housing
The houses will have a cement foundation, concrete block walls, and a galvanized sheet
roof.
Sanitation
Each house will include a personal pit latrine to address the lack of proper sanitation
facilities (one of the leading causes of diseases throughout Haiti).
Water or Kitchenette
Each house will also be built with a household water storage unit; for example, a concrete
cistern, plastic “tuff” tank, etc. (When requested by the recipients, an outside kitchenette
can be built instead).
Solar light kits
Each of the housing recipients will receive a solar light kit that will provide lighting for
their home. These lights will allow them to function better at night, as they will be able
to do chores and other activities.
Change To Project Solution
The project name has been changed from Lotore Housing Development to Father
Chuck’s Challenge – Lotore Housing.

Progress Update
The housing construction has commenced in Lotore. Ten houses are currently under
construction, even though there was a slight delay due to the obstacles that occurred
when transporting the materials. Lotore is on the island of La Gonave, so it is not easy to
access transportation to transport materials.
However, all problems were resolved and the construction materials have been delivered
to the island. People, young and old, participated in transporting the project materials
from the beach to the project location. The contractors are working diligently to help the
families who were without proper homes. Progress continues to be made.
The residents are excited to see construction in this small, desolate area that has been
forgotten by most. The people of the community are so grateful for the generosity of the
donors that have made this possible.
Future Action
Finish the construction of 10 double-unit homes with sanitation and water
Construction of 15 double-unit homes
Installation of 25 solar kits with sanitation and water
The project materials were delivered to the island
