Student
Recognition
Students involved in Jones Academy’s Learn and Serve have
had a very busy year. There were many activities planned to
help Hartshorne’s community in several different ways. This
years clean-up project in Hartshorne was a smashing success, and the visits to Beare Manor were a very heart warming experience for the children, as well as the residents of
the nursing home. However, Learn and Serves final project
for the 2011-2012 school year was the most colorful event,
to say the least. For their final project, students painted rain
barrels that will be used to recycle water. These barrels will
be placed in various Choctaw tribal locations. This project
was an excellent opportunity for students to implement their
artistic and creative abilities and to help their environment. Jaycelynn Charger concentrates

Classroom
Adventure
With
Mr.Sirmans
Jones Academy’s 5th grade students
recently had an excellent opportunity to
learn about how pistons work in a motor.
The students, with the aid of Mr. Sirmans,
ran a compression test on a twin cylinder
Onan motor because the motor had lost
some power and had some blow-by. Upon
observing the motor students noticed that
one cylinder had more compression than
the other. Using several tools the students
were able to remove the motor from a
garden tractor. After removing the oil pan
Truvon Willis stated, “Oh, so that’s how
the pistons are able to move in the cylinders!” Through this hands-on lesson students were able to apply knowledge about
measurements and real world mechanics
that they learned in the classroom. It was
definitely nota run of the mill lesson, but Mr. Sirmans explains to his class that a garden tractor motor is not working
the students left with some knowledge
properly.
they will be able to use in their real world
experiences.
Lena Goodbear shows off some tools that the
students used to remove the motor from the
tractor.
The students were able to see firsthand how
pistons work and what to do when they aren’t
working properly.

Horseback Riding at Jones Academy
Although there are many extracurricular activities to participate
in at Jones Academy, one of the
most favorites is horseback riding.
It is enjoyed by all age groups and
everyone is encouraged to participate. The students are allowed to
ride twice a week when the weather
permits and are supervised by Mr.
Billy Bailey. Riding times are split
between the older students and the
younger ones, allowing everyone
equal riding time. Jones Academy
houses several horses for the students to ride.
Danielle Murillo takes time to pose with one of these gentle giants
that makes Jones Academy its home.

JA Writers Attend Crazy
Horse Memorial Journalism
Workshop
By Joshua Sam, Markita Cross, and Kim Black Bear
Joshua Sam ponders on what to write for the caption of his photograph of the Carving of Crazy Horse.
On April 15th. 2012, three JA Writers, along with
Mrs. Cooley, boarded an airplane destined for South
Dakota. Kim Black Bear, Markita Cross, and Joshua
Sam were chosen from a pool of applicants to attend
the The Crazy Horse Memorial Journalism Workshop.
This workshop is for Native American High School
juniors and seniors, who are interested in the field of
Journalism. During the workshop students learn to
be better writers and pick up skills to become better
photographers. The students work with mentors from
prominent newspapers who donate their time to make
the workshop successful and time worthy for the students. The final product of the workshop is a newspaper created by the students who attend the workshop.
While in South Dakota, the JA writers also took
the opportunity to do some sightseeing. They visited
the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, where thousands of
fossils of Mammoths have been excavated and are on
display. They also visited The Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone, as well as the breathtaking Custer
State Park. The whole experience was a great adventure for the JA writers. They became more educated
in the field of Journalism, met new acquaintances and
saw some things that they may not have ever gotten to
see other wise. It was an unforgettable experience for
all involved.
Markita Cross revises her article, as her mentor makes suggestions to make her story more appealing to the reader.

The Final Weigh-in results for the Biggest Loser contest
are in! Earlier this year Jones Academy employees were
given the opportunity to participate in the Biggest Loser
Challenge promoted by the Diabetes Wellness Center. The
DWC/Happy Heart provided two staff members, exercise
specialist Mandy Grammer and Raina Sparks MS, RD/LD,
community/clinical dietician to help coordinate the Biggest
Loser Contest at Jones Academy. The challenge was over
a twelve week period where Mandy and Raina taught the
participants the importance of making healthy choices and
daily exercise.
The results were exceptional; there were a total of 26
participants who chose to challenge themselves and push
themselvers to a healthier lifestyle, the 26 participants had
over a 71% wt. loss.
This program not only was a true benefit for the staff but
also set healthy examples for our Jones Academy
students to follow. Congratulations Jones Academy for a
job well done.
