“Kitchens just don’t happen, they need lots of planning and thought,” says
Louise Hurlbutt of Hurlbutt
Designs on Route 9, Kennebunk Lower Village.
Hurlbutt’s culinary creativity and know-how,
along with several other
area kitchen designers,
shines brightly in the Kennebunk Senior Center’s
12th Annual Coastal Kitchen Tour on Saturday, October 10.
The half-dozen homes
included in this popular
tour demonstrate that
kitchens have become not
only the hottest – but undoubtedly the coolest –
rooms in the house.
For anyone who is contemplating upgrading or
totally reconstructing a
kitchen, this tour is an eyeopener and idea-ignitor. It
showcases the latest trends
in kitchen layouts, appliances, countertops, backsplashes and lighting.
“And remember,” Hurlbutt says, “refurbishing
or putting in a brand new
kitchen can add upwards

of 20 to 25 percent value to
your home.”
One of the more spectacular kitchens on tour is
in a totally reconstructed
home at Kennebunk Beach.
“The owner wanted a
contemporary feeling, so
we opened up the whole
first floor and took out
walls so that the kitchen, dining room and living room became one big
room,” Hurlbutt says, adding, “It’s how people live
today and use a home.”

Visitors to this kitchen will experience ideal lighting for the kitchen, that creates both a cozy
dining atmosphere and sheds optimum light on work spaces.
Dina Lennon of Sylco
Cabinetry in Waterboro
worked with Hurlbutt
in designing this custom
kitchen. Of special note
is the near-bedroom-size
pantry (8'x11’), counter
tiles and backsplash made
of glazed porcelain that
resemble a waterfall, and
a chef de cuisine stainless
steel hood over a large glass
cooktop.
Kennebunk cabinetmaker Bob Meserve created
a unique built-in circular
bar adjacent to the kitchen,
using a catalyzed lacquer
wood finish that is durable
and moisture resistant.
In another featured
home on a hillside at Kennebunk Beach, the secondfloor contemporary kitchen
is accessible by a circular
metal and wood staircase.
With cathedral ceilings
and an open floor plan,
the refurbished kitchen
overlooks a spacious deck,
swimming pool and, in the
distance, the crescent cove
adjacent to Mothers Beach.

I never understand those ads suggesting gifts “for
the woman who has everything.” Who wants
everything? What a headache.
I just want a few of the right things. The right
fit, the right feel, the right look. And if I don’t
find it, I make it!

“We used porcelain
flooring from Distinctive
Tile & Design in Portland,”
Hurlbutt says. “The grey
grain hue looks just like
wood and already has the
time-worn patina of aged
hardwood – yet it’s so
practical.”
The sleek custom kitchen (also designed by Dina
Lennon of Sylco) features
white cabinets, contemporary countertops of polished pearl blue granite
and a built-in bar with wine
storage and ice maker.
Kevin Lord of Thomas
& Lord, along with a noted
kitchen designer from Chicago, worked with Hurlbutt to create a state-of-theart kitchen in a newly constructed Kennebunkport
home off Ocean Avenue.

as does the handpainted,

stove.
The centerpiece, however is the stove. The 48inch, six-burner Wolf Dual
Fuel Range with distinctive
red knobs also features
a 16-inch Wolf induction
cooktop for fastest boiling
or instant simmering.
Hurlbutt says, “The
cooktop doesn’t heat up,
the cookware does – it’s
amazing!”
Hurlbutt noted the infinite variety of kitchen
styles and features currently available.
“There are so many innovations in kitchens these
days,” Hurlbutt says. She
suggests that anyone contemplating an upgrade or
total reconstruction should
first consider whether to
go traditional, modern or
contemporary.
“They need to consider
cabinet door styles and
how they will furnish the
rest of their home. Primarily, a good kitchen design
