Rainbow Trail Loses A Legend
Rev. Don Simonton passes away on March 17th
On March 17th, Rainbow Trail lost a
giant. The Reverend Don Simonton,
the first full-time director of Rainbow
Trail Lutheran Camp, passed away in
Grand Junction, Colorado.
Don’s life had been spent as
pastor/developer for the Lutheran
Church. Don started St. Luke’s in
Albuquerque, then moved to Santa
Fe to start the ministry of Christ
Lutheran. In 1958, Don became the
first Director of Rainbow Trail where
he served until 1969. It was through
his connections in Albuquerque that
Rainbow Trail acquired the current
bell we use at camp from the Santa Fe
Railroad. Don was a visionary. Don
developed and shaped the first camp
philosophy for Rainbow Trail as well
as designed the initial programs that
Rainbow Trail offered.
But if there is one story that
secures Don’s place in our history,
it would be his part in the legendary
horseshoe toss. The Rainbow Lake
Club was one of two sites the Synod
was considering for a camp. Don
Simonton and Leeland Soker had
stopped by the Rainbow Lake Club
on the way to a meeting they had in
Denver. No one was on the site but
they climbed up on some snowdrifts
and looked in some windows. A hint
of hesitation, as comes with any great
investment, came over the two when
talking about purchasing the site. But,
as fate would have it, while they were
leaving, Lee and Don came across a
horseshoe pit. And Don loved to tell
this part of the story: “And Lee Soker
bent down, picked up a horseshoe and
said, ‘If I make a ringer, we’ll buy the
place.’ And sure enough, it dropped
right on. And the legend was born!”
Even in his years of retirement,
Don stayed actively involved in the
ministry of Rainbow Trail. In the
1990’s, Don would come and join
the staff every summer during staff
training to share the history of Rainbow
Trail. The staff would gather around
the Fircle and listen to RTLC history
come to life. Don was a marvelous
storyteller and could paint a picture
that would capture his audience.
On Saturday mornings, Don
would join the summer staff for the end
of their staff meeting and lead them in
worship and Eucharist. Don closed
every Saturday morning with Isaiah
55:12: “You shall go out in joy and be
led forth in peace; the mountains and
the hills before you shall burst into
song, and all the trees of the field will
clap their hands.”
Pastor Jay McDivitt, RTLC
staff alumni, said, “When I think of
the sheer number of lives this man’s
vision and commitment and passion
and faith have touched and changed, I
am overcome. I absolutely would not
be who I am today (the good parts,
that is) if it were not for my time spent
at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp.”
Dave Jarvis, current Director,
summed it up well. “Don was a true
visionary for outdoor ministry in this
Synod. As the first full-time director
at Rainbow Trail, he set the standard
of excellence for outdoor ministry.
Don modeled the passion to serve
that has been contagious through
this place. I will always remember
those nights around the campfire with
summer staff when Don would tell the
powerful stories about the beginning
of Rainbow Trail. Don was a great
friend and mentor to me. Don taught
me how to be a camp director, and
how to not forget the past and where
you came from as you boldly move
forward. For that I am grateful. Don,
you will be dearly missed!”
Rainbow Trail, along with
the Simonton family, are creating the
Don and June Simonton Seminary
Scholarship Fund. These funds will be
available for Rainbow Trail staff and
staff alumni to apply for a scholarship
to attend one of our ELCA seminaries.
If you would like to make a gift to
the Simonton Seminary Scholarship
Fund in memory of Don, please mark
your gift “Seminary Scholarship.” If
you would like to make a larger gift
or a stock gift to help kick start this
scholarship fund, please contact Dave
Jarvis at 719-429-1377 for more
details.

Mark your Calendar: CO Gives 2015
Trail Boss
By Dave Jarvis - Executive Director
This time of the year is crazy for us!
Final preparations for summer, providing our
staff online spring training, attending Synod
assembly, leading retreats, participating in a full
week of ropes training, buying all the clothing
for popshop and equipment we need to provide
our ministry are just SOME of the things we are
doing right now. The craziness is all worth it
because campers will be arriving in a little more
than a month. I love that we can be a part of the
faith development of so many of your children.
It is a task we take very seriously. Thanks for
trusting us!
Registrations are looking great for
summer and most weeks are full or very close
to full. However, there is still time to register
for camp! If you haven’t registered yet, do it
today. It is easy and can all be done online. There are still some senior high camp
spots available in both weeks as well as some intro spots. Also, there is still a lot of
room in that last week of camp. Double check when your school starts for the fall.
Many schools don’t start until after that last week. Don’t miss out on the chance
to be at camp with our great staff. If money is an issue, email me and let’s talk.
Don’t let finances be the reason for not coming to camp. We have an abundance of
camperships available for that purpose. There are no forms to fill out, and you don’t
need to share any private information. Take advantage of this opportunity to help
your child have the best week of their summer at Rainbow Trail!
Our summer staff will soon be here! Our Directors arrive on Monday, May
18th and the rest of our ministry team arrives on Memorial Day. We are so excited
about this team and all they will have to offer our campers. This is a great group!
There will be a lot of familiar faces but also a bunch of wonderful new ones that
are ready to meet you and love you! Please keep this team in your prayers as they
prepare for this summer. May God use them in amazing ways this summer!!
In case you didn’t see the announcement in this newsletter, because of the
generous donations of many people, the new ropes course is officially paid for! Our
full-time program staff just completed their new facilitator certification training for
the course. This is an amazing gift to our ministry!
The land exchange process continues to move forward. With the purchase
of the land last February, we are working with the Forest Service to try to officially
begin the actual exchange process. This will be a slower process. We need to be
about patience and perseverance. There will be more information coming soon!
We continue to need your support for this ministry through prayer, through
your sweat, and through your financial gifts. You can choose how you want to
support – whether it is annual fund, the land exchange, Memorial Day expenses,
or even camperships. Gifts of all sizes, large and small, make this ministry run. If
everyone will do something to financially support RTLC, it will make an enormous
difference. And the return on this investment will be tremendous – that is a
promise!!!!!
This spring, Rainbow Trail lost one of its icons and I lost a dear friend. Don
Simonton, the first director of Rainbow Trail, was such a gift to Rainbow Trail for
so many years. We are all reaping the benefits of Don’s work during the early years
of Rainbow Trail’s ministry. You were only a stranger to Don until he said “hi” to
you. He was always aware of how God was working through us. I loved Don’s
stories and loved that he was always willing to teach. I will be attending Don’s
Memorial service on May 7th in Vail. We are also hoping to have an additional
service for Don at camp this summer. We will get details out soon. Don, thanks for
being a true servant for God!
I’ll see you this summer! It is going to be a great one! I can’t believe
we are already starting another. Thanks for the blessing of serving you another
summer. This is summer #27 for me. I can’t wait! See you soon!
Until next time…
Another Successful CPK Fundraiser
A huge thank you to everyone that
participated in the California Pizza
Kitchen fundraiser this past January and
March. Spanning over 6 California
Pizza Kitchen locations in the
front range plus the one in
Albuquerque, we raised
over $1,300. Our staff had
a chance to meet and eat with
folks at the Boulder CPK in January
and at the Briargate CPK in Colorado
Springs in March. The people and the
SPRING 2015
conversation were definitely the best
part of the evening. Thank you for your
incredible support; we definitely felt the
love! Thank you to Judy Leiseth and
Marsha Ehrhardt for their work
on this fundraiser. We are
planning on keeping this
fundraiser in the future. Keep
your eyes and ears open for dates
and locations! We are very blessed to
have such great supporters!
New Date for 2015 Open
Bridging Borders Trip!
Bridging Borders, Rainbow Trail’s service trip program, is offering an
“open registration” week to Mexico during summer 2015. The dates
for this trip have changed to June 21-27! This trip requires a
valid passport, which takes about 5-6 weeks to obtain if you do not
have one. If you or someone you know is interested in spending a
faith-filled week serving others and building a house in Mexico, please
contact Ben Jarvis at [email protected] or call the Canon
City office at 719-276-5233. Deadline is May 15th! Register now!
Support RTLC on Colorado Gives
Day! On Tuesday, December 8,
2015, Coloradans will come together
again to raise mil¬lions of dollars for
nonprofits like Rainbow Trail. Last
year, a remarkable $26.2 million was
distributed to 1,677 Colorado nonprofits. RTLC raised and amazing
$63,023 in that 24 hour
period. Our goal for 2014
was to raise $50,000.
With the support received
in 2014, we have set a
goal for 2015 of $70,000!
All funds raised will
go towards the Annual
Fund. Since we are still
in the middle of the land
exchange process, some people have
shifted their an¬nual fund donation
towards the Capital appeal. But we
still need our annual fund to sustain
day-to-day operations. Mark your
calendars and make a difference!

Designate your Thrivent Choice Dollars to
RTLC and Help Great Ministry Happen!
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a charitable giving program called Thrivent
Choice. Each member is allocated a set amount of money to give to the Lutheran
organizations of their choice. Last year, Rainbow Trail received $30,205 from
this program. Our goal for 2015 is $40,000. We hope that you will designate
your allocated dollars to Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. You will need to go out
to the Thrivent website quarterly to designate your Thrivent Choice dollars. We
know that is a lot to remember and we can help. If you will let us know that you
have designated your Thrivent Choice dollars to Rainbow Trail, we can send
you either an email or a postcard quarterly to remind you to go out and designate
your dollars. If you haven’t designated your Choice dollars to any organization,
just follow the steps below to designate them to Rainbow Trail.
Here are step by step instructions on how to designate your funds.
Over the Internet
1. Log on to www.thrivent.com
2. Sign in with your username and password or register for an account.
3. Once you have registered and signed in, select the “Direct Choice Dollars”
button for Thrivent Choice in the right hand side.
4. In the middle of the next page, type “Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp” in
the “Organization Name” box, leave “City” blank, and click search.
5. Next to our camp name, you will click the “Direct Now” button. You will
be able to assign all or part of your Choice dollars to us. You can also set it
up so Rainbow Trail continues to get your future Thrivent Choice Dollars
as well.
6. Click the “submit” button and your Thrivent Choice Dollars will be sent
to our ministry.
Over the Phone
1. Call 800-847-4836.
2. Follow the prompts that are given.
3. You will be asked for the last four digits of your Social Security number,
then you will be sent through an automated operator system.
Our camp is listed as “Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp.”
This is just one more way that you can give to support this ministry. Encourage
your friends that are Thrivent members to do the same! If you have any questions,
call Dave at the Canon City office.

Every fall, Rainbow Trail Lutheran
Camp hosts its annual Grace Race to
help stamp out world hunger. This
annual 5k run/walk was started as
part of RTLC’s 50th anniversary in
2007, to raise money for the ELCA
World Hunger Appeal. The event
is held in collaboration with the
Rocky Mountain Synod Hunger
Network. Over the last eight years,
the Rainbow Trail community has
contributed $37,599.00 to the ELCA
World Hunger Appeal. But we think
we can do more. The 9th Annual
Grace Race will be held on Saturday,
October 3, 2015. We are aiming
for 400 participants for this year’s
race. This can be the year we top
$10,000 for the check that we send
to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal!!
Another great way to support this
event and cause is to advertise your
business on the classy Grace Race
shirts. For a $300 donation, we will
add your company name and logo to
the race shirt. There will also be a
link for your business off of the RTLC
website. We’ll give your business
some great press and you will help
make an incredible difference in our
world. Contact Dave Jarvis at dave@

SPRING 2015
Site to Sight By Kyle Larson - Director of Site and Facilities
Summer has once again snuck up
on me. It seems that each year summer
comes a bit quicker. Lots to do and not a lot
of time to get it done! I jumped the gun a
bit this year and took the plow off the front
of the truck. In true fashion, we got about a
foot and a half of snow a week later. I think
I may have learned my lesson this time!
Winter has been great this year. It’s
been busy but not too busy to keep me from
getting things done. I was fortunate enough
to find a couple weeks in March to take
some vacation time and head to Mexico. As
some of you may know, I lived in Mexico
City for a year before coming to RTLC
full-time. My trip in March was a great
time to reconnect with my host family and
take some much needed time for rest and
relaxation. It’s great to come back from time
away feeling rejuvenated and ready to kick
into summer.
Summer staff is already selected and in the midst of online staff
training. It’s hard to believe that in less than a month, we’ll have staff rolling
through the doors. As always, the team is going to be great! It’s cool to see how
the process works and how things fall into place with staff. The spirit is most
definitely alive and well in the selection process of staff!
As is the case each year around this time, I’m in the full swing of
Memorial Day preparations. I’ve got several great projects lined up but the
most notable is a new deck for both the first and second floors of Juniper
Lodge. Juniper serves as our nurse’s station in the summer and a retreating
space for church leaders in the other nine months. The upstairs bathroom
will also be remodeled to give the space a much needed update. I’m looking
forward to another weekend of service and fellowship. I’m always so grateful
for the donation of time and labor that people make to RTLC. It wouldn’t be
the same without people who care so deeply about this place.
As we enter into the final month before summer, we say goodbye to
the Program Assistants’ who have called RTLC home for the last nine months.
Kelsey and Christa have been incredible assets to the organization and have
given of themselves in the most genuine way possible. As they both move on to
other professions in ministry, I hope that they understand the gift that they were
to those around them. Thanks for all the fun ladies, you will be missed.
All of the craziness aside, this time of year provides me the time I need
to feel the presence of God in the work I do and the people I work with. I’m
blessed to work with people who are passionate about ministry and passionate
about kids. Seeing God in both those people who work at RTLC and those
that work in ministry around the Rocky Mountain Synod is what keeps me
motivated and excited to dive into a new summer of long hours, unexpected
twists and coffee (lots of coffee.) My hope is that you all have people in your
lives that re-center you and help you see God in your daily life.
Hope to see you all this summer!
Peace,

Men’s Fly Fishing Retreat
September 10-13, 2015
Take some time to step out of the stresses of
ordinary life and into the refreshing waters of
the Arkansas River. This weekend of fly fishing,
hanging out with the guys, and amazing worship
and conversation is led by Pastor Dave Risendal.
His deep love of fly fishing and the gospel will help
you re-center and deepen your faith. Expand your fly
fishing skills with instruction from Greg Felt, owner
of Ark Anglers Fly Shop, fly tying workshops, and
advice from other seasoned fishermen. Whether you
are an experienced angler or just want to try fly fishing, this is a weekend you
won’t want to miss! The $195 program fee includes meals and lodging. Don’t
have gear? No problem, we can connect you with rental equipment at a great price.
We can also make arrangemens to hire guided fly trips through Ark Anglers if
desired. To get more info, contact Ben, 719-431-0050 or [email protected],
or visit the “Retreats” tab on www.rainbowtrail.org.
Registration Opens July 1st!
Thank You Program Assistants
If you have been to RTLC during the past nine months, then you’ve met
Christa Drengler and Kelsey Kethan. Christa and Kelsey are the wonderful
and talented Program Assistants who have helped us host over two thousand
people at RTLC retreats and events since September. The gifts and energy that
they shared with us are very much appreciated, and they quickly became an
integral part of our staff team.
Both Christa and Kelsey are planning on pursuing careers in full time
ministry. Christa has accepted a position as an Assistant Program Director at
Koinonia, a camp in eastern New York, and will be finishing her time with us at
the end of April. Kelsey is planning on moving to North Carolina and pursuing
positions in Youth Ministry there. Both will be very missed here at RTLC.
The Program Assistant position is a nine month internship program for
those wanting to learn more about working in full-time outdoor ministry.
Participants help in all areas of the retreat season including office work, retreat
hosting, general maintenance, and program planning. They also go through
training sessions to learn about the many facets of camp leadership and help
them develop their own Outdoor Ministry philosophies.
Thank you Christa and Kelsey for your hard work and dedication to RTLC’s
ministry! Know that you will always have a home at Rainbow Trail.
Update on the Land Exchange
Rainbow Trail has moved into
Phase II of our land exchange process. As
you know, we purchased the non-federal
land we needed for the exchange in 2014.
We are now in the process of working
with the Forest Service to initiate the
actual land exchange process. Because
of the limited available human resources
within the area Forest Service offices,
we are hoping to find a contractor that
is suitable with the Forest Service that
can work on our behalf and move our
exchange forward. This part will be a
slower process than the land acquisition.
So, patience and perseverance are the
watchwords for now!
In the meantime, we have begun
Phase II to raise funds to cover the expense
of the actual land exchange process. The
total cost of the land exchange process to
$275,000. The great news is that we have
already raised over $101,000 for Phase
II! We still need to raise an additional
$174,000 to cover the cost of consultant
fees, administrative expenses, and the
work to complete the Forest Service’s
64-step exchange process. These funds
will cover exchange process related
expenses as well as all of the studies and
assessments related to the exchange that
will occur during the exchange process.
We continue to need your prayers
and we need your financial support.
To reach our final goal of raising the
additional $174,000 to finish this project,
we need people who really understand the
value of this ministry in the lives of youth
and families to help make this a reality. We
know that many of you have already given
and given generously to the purchase of
the land. We promise this will be the last
time we come back to you and ask you to
give to the land exchange project. If you
gave to the land purchase, I hope that you
will consider giving an additional gift for
the future of RTLC. If you haven’t given
yet, consider making a special gift for the
future generations that will be a part of
this ministry. We are open to matching
fund opportunities or a capstone gift if
you would like to use your gift to help
encourage others to give as well. We have
already received two gifts of $25,000 that
are matching funds gifts that will make
your gift make a bigger difference. We
can also easily accept stock gifts. Call me
to get the critical information. I would
love to have a more in-depth conversation
with you and explain more about this once
in a lifetime opportunity. You
can reach me by email at dave@
rainbowtrail.org or by phone at 719429-1377. Help us make Rainbow Trail
Lutheran Camp our Home At Last!

SPRING 2015
RAINBOW TRAIL LUTHERAN CAMP
He Be Jammin
By Ben Jarvis - Director of On-Site & Bridging Borders
I love the rhythm of spring before camp.
There is a flow every year that progresses toward
summer. Starting with our Bible Study Writers’
Retreat back in January, followed by recruiting in
February, hiring staff in March, and doing online
training in April, every month gears me up for
summer more than the last. Before you know
it, we will have our Summer Directors on-site
for Directors’ Training, and then we are off and
running.
We even had the opportunity as full-time
staff to be trained on our high ropes course last
week. This will allow us all to facilitate the course
with campers this summer, which I couldn’t be
more excited about. I’ve seen that aspect of RTLC
ministry transform people. It’s a powerful tool
that brings groups together, and strengthens faith as well as self confidence. Last
summer reminded me just how special it is to have that as a part of our camp
environment.
Our staff is, once again, shaping up to be absolutely stellar. I ask that you
all please pray for them as they step into this service in a few short weeks. Being
away from family, making sacrifices for others, and bringing their own personal
lives with them is challenging. God is good for bringing these willing hearts to
us.
While I am absolutely ecstatic about the new faces and returning staff
that will be arriving in May, I can’t help but be a little bit melancholy as we say
good-bye to our awesome Program Assistants. Christa and Kelsey are about to
wrap up their time with us. They’ve become close friends to us all, and it makes
it difficult to see them go. As I write this, Christa is already packed and ready to
go to New York in just a few days to start her new position at another camp. We
are fortunate enough to have Kelsey through mid-May, but then she will be off on
her own endeavors as well, and possibly moving to North Carolina. It’s been so
great to connect with both of them over the last nine months. Please keep them
in your prayers as well.
Alright, here we go! Summer 2015... Fruit of the Spirit. So many fires,
meals, hikes, V.O.D.’s, and songs to enjoy. I can’t wait! Come be a part of it!
Peace,
The 9th Annual Grace Race
The date has been set!
Please join us on Saturday,
October 3 for the 9th Annual
Grace Race. The race will
begin at 4 pm with check-in
beginning at 2:30 pm. We
will be grilling after the race
as we did last year. This year
we will again be partnering
with the Rocky Mountain
Synod World Hunger appeal.
We are hoping to again have
a representative from the
ELCA office in Chicago
joining us. Can’t wait to see
you all there to support the
World Hunger Appeal. We’re
hoping to have 400 runners
and raise $10,000 this year
for World Hunger.
