Dear Friends, As Beaver Brook Association concludes its 50th year in existence it seems appropriate
to reflect upon some of the events that shaped our little corner of the world in 2014. We hope you’ll agree that
because of the actions taken this year the future of Beaver Brook looks very bright.
At our annual meeting in January, keynote speaker and Beaver Brook supporter Randy Pierce, addressed an
audience of 130 attendees. Having lost his sight in his early 20s, Pierce shared his challenges in hiking all 48 of New
Hampshire’s 4,000 foot peaks. His message to “overcome your obstacles and keep climbing” was quite inspirational
and great advice to all as we move into our next 50 years.
In May, signs guaranteed to last for many years were installed and can be expected to greet visitors to our facilities
well into the future. Later that month, Beaver Brook held its largest party ever and celebrated its 50th birthday with
over 350 friends, supporters, and honored guests including many with more than 20 years of volunteer service.
This year we welcomed many new members, new key partner organizations, new teachers, and several new
educational offerings as well. Succeeding Beth Baryiames who retired in 2014, Tara Happy joined our staff as the
Assistant Director of Education. Both have been superb additions to our staff.
New Eagle Scout projects in 2014 to improve the facilities at Beaver Brook included construction of a wildlife blind,
two kiosks, and repair of the ice house, and we appreciate the strong relationship that Beaver Brook shares with
many scouting organizations in the area.
The importance of both experiencing and protecting the natural world around us has never been greater than it is
today and as of this writing Beaver Brook has successfully managed to have planned utilities avoid conservation land
wherever possible. That action by our Land Protection Committee this year will hopefully help to protect Beaver
Brook for many more years and likely have a positive impact on the protection of conservation land everywhere.
None of what Beaver Brook has been able to accomplish over the last 50 years would be possible without the loyal and
generous support of our members, friends, volunteers, and partners near and far. To all of you we say THANK YOU!

50 Years and Going Strong: Education & Community Affairs

In 2014, BBA hosted 5,370 students from 70 schools in environmental education programs
Thanks to generous donors, 1,130 students from low-income schools attended field programs at BBA
330 students participated in Summer Nature Camp
Over 10,000 people enjoyed mushroom classes, fitness hiking, survival, tracking, maple sugaring, and snowshoeing programs,
Afterschool Camp, Vacation Camps, Nature Hour for preschoolers, and birthday parties at Beaver Brook.
New in 2014:
• Kap Siddall with family, staff, and friends constructed a new ash bark wigwam and a stone labyrinth on the trails
• BBA began a partnership with the Nashua Police Athletic League SafeHaven for children. Thanks to generous donors, students from the
city visit BBA every month plus BBA teachers bring programs into the SafeHaven Youth Center on Ash Street.
• Hosted the First Annual Hike for Health with 400 visitors on the trails of BBA in new partnership the Nashua YMCA and the Greater
Nashua Obesity Prevention Group
• Afterschool Forest Freetime and Snowtime school vacation camps offered at BBA
• Set up a New England Wildlife Museum in the yurt all summer and at Fall Festival
• Created a commemorative photobook 50 Years of Beaver Brook
• Hosted 50th Birthday Party celebration with Belgian horse hayrides, live Acadian music, old fashioned games, and lunch under the big
tent. Recognized 33 Volunteers and 3 staff members with over 20 years of service.
• Partnered with Labelle Winery for snowshoeing through the vineyard at Winter Fest.
• Partnered with Creative Feast to offer Garden to Table classes.
• Hosted mega Easter Egg Hunt on the trails, a public TickTalk, and a Bluebird and Woodcock watch
• Developed new presentations and trained garden docents to give educational tours of the Maple Hill Gardens to visitors
• Partner organizations include NH Children in Nature Coalition, Nashua PAL, Nashua YMCA, Colonial Garden Club, NH Fish & Game,
Rivier University Biology Club, Daniel Webster Council of Boys Scouts, and the Girl Scouts of the Green & White Mountains, Nissitissit
River Land Trust and Nashoba Conservation Trust, Freedom’s Way National Heritage Association, Hollis Historical Society, plus many
other community groups in southern NH.

Successful timber harvest completed in area west of Eastman Meadow Trail and south of Jason’s Cutoff
Where necessary, rebuilt the road bed and upgraded the drainage on Elkins Road and part of Eastman Meadow
All culverts and drainage ditches cleaned and maintained

Duck and Bluebird nesting boxes cleaned and repaired as necessary and use data recorded

Stone walls at Maple Hill Farm that parallel Cow Lane were cleared and exposed and the strip of land between road and walls was planted with grass
Completed extensive repairs to the sliding barn doors on lower level of Maple Hill Barn
Annual field mowing completed and field edge restoration and maintenance program continued
A new deck at the entrance to the Spear Room was installed as part of the ongoing fire and safety upgrade program
A generous donation allowed the purchase of a new table saw, a tow behind mower/mulcher and a new commercial lawn mower
