skills. When we
began, my irst grade student had a very hard time with reading. She would read the irst
letter of the word and then say the irst word that came to mind that began with that
letter. Every day during our reading time, I would pick a book and read it to her and she
would pick a book and read it to me. She had such a positive attitude and was excited to
read with me, but she would get distracted often and would get so frustrated when she
would realize that she wasn’t reading well. I worked with her once a week for an hour and
a half, teaching her to blend consonant sounds together and practicing short words. I
would mix it up every day with different activities to focus on phonics skills using lip
books, lash cards, games, and fun drills to keep her interested. Some days were easier for
her than others, but gradually I could see her progress. Her concentration was improving
and she slowed down to look at the letters and was able to sound out the words. She
started feeling more comfortable during our reading time. By the next year, my student
was conidently reading simple books. When I started working with her, her skill level was
classiied as “pre-reading”, but after a year and a half, she was reading at a irst grade level.
She still has a ways to go, but at this rate, she’ll be at grade level and beyond very soon! It is
really incredible to think how much good you can do in an hour and a half a week and what
a difference you can make in someone’s life. To see my student’s face light up when she
saw me and to see how happy it made her to be able to read was the most rewarding
feeling! This little girl had truly been lost in a classroom environment because she needed
individual attention to teach her reading skills and to help her learn to focus. How amazing
it is to be the one that can give her that little bit of extra help she needed to make her
successful! This small time commitment is the difference for her between learning to read
and struggling in school. Reading is so foundational in education that without it, she would
have struggled throughout her entire school career.
This is one of the experiences that drew me to work with Chuck on the Service/Outreach
commission. I truly believe that through small commitments like the one I made to my
little student, we at All Saints parish can make a huge difference to deserving individuals in
our little corner of the world and beyond.

5 URGENT Call for Adult Catechists/Small Group Leaders As the fall 2015 season approaches and we anticipate 50 new teenagers registering for the Confirmation program, we are in need of 8-‐10 adult Catechists/Small Group Leaders. Our High School Confirmation program starts Sunday Sept 20 at 5pm in the Gym. We meet 2 times a month on Sunday evenings from 5-‐8pm, which includes 7pm Mass. The small groups consist of 10-‐15 teens, 1-‐2 teen leaders and 1-‐2 adult leaders. The Lord calls each of us into ministry according to our gifts that He has generously bestowed on us. If you feel the Holy Spirit calling you to minister and share your faith with teenagers preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation, please contact the church office attn: Youth Ministry Coordinator.
