- Nower Hill High School
From the Headteacher:
I recently spent the most enjoyable Saturday accompanying Miss Freed , a large number of staff and 6th Form volunteers
and almost 150 Year 10 students on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award ‘practice’ weekend. The weather was a touch
cold for my liking, but the students headed off on their 6 hour treks, backpacks and maps to hand and all managed to
return safely and on time. I enjoyed driving around the lanes of Hertfordshire to see where they had all got to and later
watching them struggle with tent pegs and guy ropes, as well as tackling a very stiff breeze whilst cooking on the
outdoor gas burners. We have been invited to attend an Anniversary celebration at Buckingham Palace in May which I
am looking forward to.
I had the pleasure this week of talking with Natasha Cheung, Riya Panchmatia, Sumayyah Siddiqui and Laura Spillane
(seen below), four of the six girls involved in an initiative to encourage girls to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics (STEM) courses and careers, (the other two girls being Imogen Lamb and Sarah Armstrong). Their
work involved taking a road show of science experiments and activities to Cannon Lane Junior School to present to,
involve and inspire the year 5 girls. I was taken with how enthusiastically and eloquently the girls talked about their
experience and have no doubt their objective was achieved and they are great role models all. It sounded like a lot of
fun too.
This end of term sees us saying farewell and thank you to one of our Deputy Headteachers, Ms Moriarty, who has been
promoted to the post of Principal at Harefield Academy. Ms Moriarty joined Nower Hill as Assistant Headteacher, Head
of Maths in June 2011 and was very quickly promoted to Assistant Headteacher, Teaching and Learning. Following my
own promotion to Headteacher of Nower Hill I was fortunate to appoint Ms Moriarty as Deputy Headteacher, Teaching
and Learning. Ms Moriarty took over this role at a time of considerable change in relation to the curriculum, reporting
and accountability measures and leaves us in a very
healthy position going forward as a consequence of her
widely acknowledged expertise and prodigious hard work.
Ms Moriarty’s promotion to Headship is very well
deserved. I have been delighted to appoint Mr Hardy to
replace her.
Wishing you all a peaceful and restful break.

Holocaust
Memorial Day
On 10th February the PRE Department took 45 Year 9 and Year 10 students to
Northwood Synagogue. The students participated in a Holocaust memorial
workshop and also heard the account of a Holocaust survivor. Here is what some of
our students said about this event
“The workshops on the treatment
of Jews by Nazi Germany made me
realise that everyday life for Jews
that were not in concentration
camps was just as appalling and
dreadful.”
“The trip made me realise
how lucky my daily life is
compared to that of a 12
year old Jewish boy in the
time of Nazi occupation.”
“The
experience
of
listening to a Holocaust
survivor is something I
will cherish for a long
time.”
“I really enjoyed hearing
what the Rabbi had to
say on why the Jewish
Community remembers
and recalls the events of
the Holocaust. The theme
of community cohesion
and how we should not
stand silent in times of
discrimination.”
Our students showed outstanding behaviour,
respect and attention during their trip to
Northwood Synagogue. Students from across
Year 9 and Year 10 put forward a a number of
intriguing questions to the guest speaker that
really benefitted their own knowledge of the
identity of Jews, their faith and the turmoil
that impacted their everyday life during the
Holocaust. A big well-done and thank you to
all students who attended and contributed.
Mr Latif
The Geography Department are excited to be
launching ‘Geog On’ club again this year which
runs on Thursday’s during lunchtime in H3
The focus of ‘Geog On’ club is global issues.
Students decide which issues they want to raise
awareness of and then create a campaign or
organise a competition.
‘Send My Friend to School’ campaign 2015
Last year, students felt really passionate about speaking out for every child’s
right to education.
“ Geog On club last year was a definite success in my eyes, with all of it’s
members walking away each week with another topic to discuss at the
dinner table. One of the first things we explored was the ‘Send my friend to
school 2015’ campaign. We first looked at how other children our age
were living their lives in different countries around the world. We found
out that across the world 58 million children do not have the opportunity
to go to school. To express our opinion on this issue, and to get our voices
heard, we got involved in the ‘my world leader’ programme, where we
made our own world leaders ( out of paper of course) and wrote what we
would do if we were a world leader to get every child into school?
Over all an eventful year!”

Watford Drama Festival 2016
On Saturday 27th February, hot on the heels of their success of their three night
run of “The Lion King”, 20 Drama students took part once again in the annual
‘Watford Drama Festival’.
The Festival, which is held at the Watersmeet in Rickmansworth, is the largest of
its kind in Europe and competitors include many other schools, Performance and
Theatre groups.
The students involved were an absolute credit to the school throughout the day
and once again swept the board of results with a fantastic 1st place in all 4 classes
entered!
Furthermore, the group performing in the Anthology entitled “I’m not a soldier”
were invited to perform once again at the Senior Finale Concert on the 20th
March where they will receive the prestigious ‘Redhead Trophy’ for the most
memorable performance of any group piece that the adjudicator saw at the
Festival.
All the students had a tiring but very enjoyable day both performing and
supporting each other as members of the audience. All in all an outstanding
achievement for the students involved!

School Production 2016
by arrangement with JOSEF WEINBERGER LIMITED
• Nower Hill High School’s 2016 production of The Lion King (Junior), a version
of the musical which has been edited especially to suit secondary school
students, was a huge success and had a completely sold out run!
• We were thrilled when the performing rights became available for The Lion
King (Junior) as we knew what a spectacular production we could create and
how much our students would enjoy the iconic songs and vast scope for
movement work.
• The production involved students from across the school (Yr7 - Yr13) and
really showcased the committed, talented performers we are lucky to have
across the age range.
• Creating the African Savannah in North Harrow was no mean feat! Due to the
nature of this production, no costume, set or props were available to hire.
Every aspect of the production (e.g. props, set, costume) was created by staff
from scratch, which is truly unbelievable. I would also like to thank the
students for their consistent hard-work and dedication. I would like to
congratulate them on the fantastic performance that they created!

PAUL HANNAFORD WORKSHOPS
On 15th March, Years 8 to 11 were fortunate to be able to participate in workshops
run by Paul Hannaford. Paul is an ex-drug user and a former gang member who has
spent many years in and out of prison, but who has now reformed and spends his
time speaking to teenagers about the dangers of drugs and gangs. The students
were highly impressed by his informative and hard-hitting workshops, with some
commenting that it was ‘the best assembly they had ever had.’

Parent ESOL Lessons
A group of Nower Hill parents have
successfully completed an ESOL (English for
Speakers of Other Languages) course at
Nower Hill.
The course started in November 2015 and
finished this March. The parents have given
very positive feedback about the course,
which helped them to develop their reading,
writing, speaking and listening skills. ESOL
Tutor Paimana Khalid from Adult, Community
and Family Learning in Harrow said: “They
have all built up their confidence and feel
more motivated to study further. All of the
parent learners who were entered have
achieved their targets and successfully passed
their assessments”.
Congratulations to the parents on their
achievements!

What a Day for World Book Day
World Book Day is promoted nationally and takes place annually on the first Thursday of March, to encourage
young people to read – and Nower Hill was no exception! The day began with teachers and Year Seven and
Eight students, alike, sporting the outfits of their favourite literary characters. With costumes inspired by the
curriculum, Candy from John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men and F Scott Fitzgerald’s Jordan from The Great
Gatsby, to more well-known and much loved characters, like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Mary Poppins.
However, the Technology faculty wowed us again with their joint costumes of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan after their
excellent effort last year as characters from Snow White and Seven Dwarfs.
The day continued with a fancy dress competition and the chance to win a Mad-hatter’s Tea Party. Throughout
the day, students and teachers shared with each other extracts and conversations of books which have inspired
them. Students still have time to enter other competitions including ‘Design a Book Token’ and ‘Nower Hill’s
Future Library’. Overall, it was a great day where everyone could share their love and experiences of reading –
not just the English teachers! World Book Day is really becoming an event in the Nower Hill calendar which
everyone looks forward to!

our food, we listened to Spanish music such as Marc Anthony,
Shakira and many others. We put our learning to the test when we
tried out Salsa dancing and now we are all experts. We all had a
