Welcome to IWA Milton Keynes Branch
The Inland Waterways Association (known as IWA) is a volunteer-led
charity that works to resurrect and protect historic waterways as a vital
leisure facility for everyone to enjoy. As a pioneering and leading charity in
this field, IWA seeks to convince the authorities to keep waterways in
operating condition, and provides expertise to restoration trusts and
societies.
How is IWA organised?
IWA has over 30 branches in England and Wales, providing volunteers and
support for local initiatives to make the waterways better. The Milton
Keynes Branch covers the Grand Union Canal from Marsworth to
Cosgrove, as well as the derelict section of the Grand Union’s Buckingham
Arm. Our Branch has around 400 members living in Milton Keynes,
Leighton Buzzard, Luton, Dunstable and Bedford.
IWA Milton Keynes Branch has
adopted Fenny Stratford Lock
and its surroundings, where our
work parties do regular tidying,
gardening and maintenance.
We work with local groups to
enable canalside improvements
to be carried out, such as the
Wolverton Train Mural (pictured).
Our Lock Help Weekend in late
May at Three Locks, Soulbury, is
our major fundraising event.
We attend local festivals and other
events to inform the public about our
work, recruit new members, and
educate adults and young people
about the waterways (pictured).
What does IWA Milton Keynes Branch do?
We monitor the work of the navigation authority (on the Grand Union that’s
Canal & River Trust) in the interests of all local waterway users.
We produce guide leaflets for
visitors arriving in Milton Keynes via
the canal, by boat or on foot. They
are available from information points
at Fenny Stratford and Cosgrove.
We comment on local planning applications that affect the waterway.
Our Canal Cleanups, where IWA is supported by Canal & River Trust and
sponsored by Wyvern Shipping Co, are held twice yearly through Milton
Keynes, and occasionally towards Leighton Buzzard. Each time we remove
up to 12 tonnes of rubbish from the canal!
We support our three local
restoration groups: BedfordMilton Keynes Waterway Trust,
Buckingham Canal Society and
Wendover Arm Trust (pictured).
We also support IWA’s Waterway
Recovery Group, which in turn
provides skilled help for restoration
projects.
Towpath Telegraph, our Branch
newsletter, is published three
times a year, and keeps members
informed about our own events
and about local waterway news
and issues. It’s available in printed
form to Branch members, and
online for anyone at:
