New Florida Law Makes It Legal to Break Into Cars
to Save Vulnerable People and Pets
In March 2016 Florida Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 131 into law, allowing Floridians to break into locked automobiles
to rescue animals or vulnerable people who are “in imminent danger of suffering harm.” The bill comes as a direct response
to the growing number of incidents where pets and children have died because they have been left in overheated
cars. According to PETA, animals can sustain brain damage or die of heatstroke in just 15 minutes of being trapped
in a car. According to the bill text, it provides immunity from civil liability for damage to a motor vehicle related to
the rescue of a person or domestic animal under circumstances. “Domestic animal” is used to describe a dog, cat,
or other animal that is domesticated and may be kept as a household pet. This term does not include livestock or
other farm animals.
However, the new law will only protect breaking into a vehicle under strict guidelines. If you’re faced with the
situation, here’s what you need to know:
First, you must check that the vehicle is locked. After doing so, call 911 or law enforcement before entering the
vehicle or immediately after rescuing the child or pet. Finally, use no more force than is necessary to break in
and you must remain with the person or animal until first-responders arrive.

Have you ever wondered how many litters of kittens a cat can
have? Well here are some basic numbers to show how fast cat
populations can get out of hand.
The average number of litters a fertile cat can produce in one year
is 3 and they can become pregnant as young as 4 months of age.
The average number of kittens in a feline litter is 4 to 6.
In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically
produce 420,000 cats.
The reality is that a very low percentage of those 420,000 cats born
find a home.
At a recent Cats Angels “Spay Day” 19 cats were taken to First
Coast No More Homeless Pets in Jacksonville for their spay/neuter
surgeries. Twelve of those cats were females and the majority in
heat! Just think of the numbers of kittens if those cats were left to
breed. This is the reason shelters and rescue groups are bursting
at the seams with litters of kittens.
There are no excuses for your allowing a pet cat to have kittens and
when a stray cat appears don’t assume that it has been fixed (unless
you see the left ear tipped). Your quick action for help may prevent
an unwanted litter. Please spay female cats and neuter male cats.
We all share those precious pictures of our Cats Angels kitties on
our phones, so why not show them to our photo contest judges.For
our 7th year producing the Cats Angels calendar, we are holding a
photo contest. Winning photo will become the cover for the 2017
Cats Angels calendar and the 4 runner-ups will be featured on the
inside pages. The 2016 Purrfect Cats of Cats Angels calendar was
a sellout! The contest will be judged by photographers from the
Island Art Association. Photos can be submitted through August
15. We are looking for personality rather than portraiture. Photos
must be of a cat that is from Cats Angels. Contest rules and entry
form can be picked up at the Cats Angels Thrift Store or downloaded

Hello to all my peeps.
My, my, my, the weather here
in Florida is hotter than a tin
roof, and we all know how cats
feel about hot tin roofs.Many
folks have been emailing me
asking how I am doing. You
see I have a thyroid condition common in mature cats. Well I am
happy to report that the oral medication is working nicely. I am trying to watch my diet and eat a little bit healthier. But every now and
again I do let myself have one or two treats. ;)
My friends at Cats Angels have these cute “Need Advice? Ask
Miss Lydia” T-shirts for sale, and they have a picture of little ole me
on them. The money from the shirts goes into a special account
to help pay for my medication, bloodwork and other medical tests.
They are available in Small to XL and the cost is $15. They have
been generously donated to Cats Angels by the nice folks at a local
business P5 Productions on 14th Street here in Fernandina Beach.
Come by the Thrift Store and check them out, and stop by and say
hi. I will be in my usual spot on the shelf by the back door. If you

Do you have a
“forever” cat or
“until you have
a baby” cat?
At Cats Angels we get calls
from cat owners saying a baby
is on the way or they just had
a baby and the cat has to go for one reason or another. This does
not have to be the case and here are some ideas from new parents
in helping kitty live with the new baby.
Cats are naturally curious and love new smells. If kitty is interested
in the little one, keep a watchful eye and a positive attitude. Some
new parents say it takes a few months for their cat to show any interest in the new baby. When they do reward good behavior.
Without a doubt, baby is getting all of the attention now, but you can
buy kitty an interactive toy that will give him the attention he craves
too. It can be as simple as a toy that hides treats or elaborate as a
laser on a timer. You can find many products online.
Keeping the litterbox clean may be the last chore on a new parent’s
list. If this becomes a problem, try one of the many “self cleaning” litterboxes on the market. Also a self-watering bowl and larger
bowls for dry food can help when time is short - just be sure to clean
them regularly.
How many times have you folded clean laundry and then see kitty
making himself comfortable on top of the stack? If you don’t want
kitty resting on baby’s clean clothes, put them in the drawer right
away....problem solved.
Studies show newborn babies are rarely allergic to cats but babies
do develop colds, etc. their first years of life. Use common sense
on allergies - keep kitty out of baby’s room and vaccum and dust
your home often.

Just why do cats eat grass?
And is it healthy?
Cats enjoy nibbling blades of tasty green grass. Some owners worry about this especially the final act, which typically involves vomiting. The good news is grass-grazing is not only harmless, many
experts suggest there may be benefits.
Because a cat’s system lacks the enzymes necessary to digest the
vegetable substance, their body’s response is to throw up the grass
as well as anything else in the digestive tract. This may include fur
from grooming and anything else the cat recently ingested. Regurgitating indigestible substances makes the cat feel better and
clears the digestive tract.
Grass contains folic acid, which helps with the production of hemoglobin, the protein that moves oxygen into the blood. This helps
kitty’s circulation.
The blades provide a natural source of fiber for cats. This is especially helpful when substances like furballs are not expelled and
move further down the digestive tract. The fiber in the grass helps
move things along.
So grass ingestion does appear beneficial to cats. For indoor cats,
a pot of grass offers a delicious taste of the outdoors.

Marcy our 3 year old Calico is FIV+ and blind in one eye. You can’t resist when she
drops on her back for a belly rub. She lives with several other non-FIV cats and their only
complaint is when she thinks she’s in charge - and she usually is! Pat and Rick
Owena is 7 years and never had a home of her own until adopted recently by Tammy.
She loves being the center of attention and not having to share anymore!
I adopted my sweet boy from Cats Angels at
the Mega Pet Adoption last July. He was just
3 months old and his Cats Angels name was
Tabasco. I have since renamed him Lennon. He
is growing so big and he is such a sweet boy.
He is a little lover! I am so thankful that I was
able to add him to my family and he is thankful
for all that Cats Angles did for him. Thank you
from the bottom of both of our hearts.
