Our appreciation to
the following companies for their
support:
Greetings everyone! I hope everyone
enjoyed the holiday season and have
been able to escape from the winter
blues in some shape or form.
As many of you know, I resigned from
AAFC on January 31. I am now on a
brief hiatus until mid-March when I
will join Chris Willenborg’s program at
the University of Saskatchewan as a
Research Assistant.
First off, a number of thank-you’s.
Thanks to Hugh Beckie, the person

that I am replacing, for the excellent
job he did in leading the Society in
2014. He spearheaded a number of
initiatives including a new Strategic
Plan. It will be a challenge to meet the
high standards set by Hugh and our
previous Presidents. The new BOD will
do its best to carry on the past momentum and ensure that we maintain
a healthy, relevant, and viable society

Clements, Past-President; Stephen Darbyshire, Publications Director;
Allan Kaastra, Member-At-Large, East; and Gavin Graham, Provincial
Representative. Hugh Beckie, Rob Nurse, Meghan Moran, and Chris
Neeser have replaced them in their respective positions. We also welcome Linda Hall to the position of 2nd Vice-President.
Time to reflect on the Annual Meeting in Montreal. I want to extend a
big thank-you to Diane Benoit and her LAC for their time and effort in
organizing a wonderful meeting. It was definitely challenging considering the fact we had our 2013 meeting only 10 months earlier! The
accommodations were great, the plenary session was stimulating, and
the hospitality and networking were second to none. As always, the
graduate students excelled in their presentations, making those of us
approaching “senescence” look pretty ordinary. My personal highlight
was finally winning an award in the Photo Contest! I am sure I hold
the record for most consecutive years of submitting photos without
winning. I still stay awake at nights wondering if it was a pity award!
Fast-forward to the upcoming year. Rory Degenhardt and the Edmonton LAC are formulating an outstanding program for the 2015 Annual
Meeting that will be held at the Westin Hotel from Nov. 23 to 27. The
plan is to have a joint meeting with the Alberta Invasive Species Council, which should help increase attendance and networking opportunities. The theme of the plenary session is NEXT, which will include a
retrospective on herbicide resistance, as well as highlight future
“game-changing” technologies in weed science.
On another note, I want to mention that Elizabeth Simpson is the new Editor
of the Weed Science Society of America newsletter. Elizabeth works as a
Dekalb Agronomist with Monsanto in Brandon so she will definitely be an
asset in enhancing communication between the two societies.
I hope you enjoy the newsletter. Any suggestions or ideas, feel free to contact me. My new email address is
[email protected].

Diane Lyse Benoit
Diane Lyse Benoit received a B.Sc. in horticulture from McGill
University in 1977 and completed her Master thesis in weed science in 1980 under the supervision of Dr. Alan Watson from
McGill University (Weed control in flue-cured tobacco). She pursued her studies and in 1986 obtained her Ph.D. in weed ecology
from the University of Western Ontario with Dr. Paul Cavers. The
focus of her expertise was the population dynamics of weed seed
banks in agricultural systems. She started her research career
with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 1984 at the Horticultural Research and Development Centre in Saint-Jean-surRichelieu, Québec. Her research initially concentrated on the
impact of reduced cultural practices on weed seed banks in the
soil and has worked for several years in close collaboration with
Dr. Anne Légère. She has worked on the biology, ecology and
control of nodding beggarticks (Bidens cernua L.) in carrots. Dr.
Benoit has also coordinated a 10-year study on the reproduction
of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) in organic soil and the
potential of integrated weed management practices for the suppression of this weed in vegetable production. She has been involved in the evaluation of mechanical weeders, green manure
and cover crops as complementary weed control methods for
Diane Lyse Benoit vegetable production. Her research team is presently studying
the impact of climate change on the reproductive output and
population dynamics of common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.). She is working in close association
with l’Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de la Montérégie and la Table québécoise sur l’herbe à
poux on the impact of community mobilisation on ragweed abundance and pollen concentrations in urban
and rural settings. She has published 27 scientific papers over her career. Dr. Benoit has set up the GLP
site for personnel of the Pest Management Centre in Saint-Jean and
was GLP site manager from 2002-2007. She was among the first active
female member of the Expert committee on weeds – Eastern section in
1979 and was project summarizer for peas, cole crops, table beet,
parsnip, radish, spinach and fine herbs and was chairman for the research appraisal for weed ecology and weed management studies for
ECW. She has served as eastern research representative, chair of database & website committee, chair of physical weed control working
group for the Canadian Weed Science Society and has participated in
local organizing committee in Montréal (1988, 1995) and MontTremblant (2007). She has been involved in the Commission de phytoprotection du CRAAQ and has organized several times the Journées en
phytoprotection (weed tours) in Québec. She is an active member of
Anne Légère speaking on Diane
several scientific societies such as WSSA, EWRS, CBA and SPPQ. She is
Lyse Benoit’s accomplishments
presently vice-president of the SPPQ and will be president in 2012CWSS-SCM Newsletter—Spring 2015

. Clements researches
invasive plants in natural
systems, such as the
Garry oak ecosystem,
David Clements
one of Canada’s most
threatened ecosystems.
He conducts research on Salt Spring Island, where Trinity Western
operates a 72 acre ecological research site that includes some prime
Garry oak ecosystem habitats.
David has published 12 articles in the Biology of Canadian Weeds series in the Canadian Journal of Plant Science and served as editor of
the series from 2004 to 2009. This inspired Clements to foster a new
series in the Pacific Science journal entitled “Biology and Impacts of
Invasive Species of the Pacific Islands” and Clements has served as editor of the series since 2007. He also contributed one article to the
Pacific Science series on Verbesina encelioides and is currently working on a second on Mikania micrantha. The series has now covered
more than a dozen species, many of them with which have serious
impacts on agricultural and natural environments in the Pacific IsPage 9

Biology of Australian Weeds (Groves and Panetta 2014)
acknowledge inspiration and encouragement for starting and developing the series
from Paul Cavers and Jack Alex
Richard Groves and Dane Panetta have recently published a paper on the 35-year history of the series of papers under
the banner Biology of Australian Weeds (Groves and Panetta 2014). In the introduction they acknowledge inspiration
and encouragement for starting and developing the series from Paul Cavers and Jack Alex, who were both key figures in
establishing the Biology of Canadian Weeds series about 5 years earlier (Cavers et al. 2013).
Groves and Panetta succinctly describe the impact of the series, “A sound biological understanding of more than 60
Australian weeds or weed groups – both agricultural and environmental – has been provided on which to build future
research programs.” Our Canadian series (both Biology of Canadian Weeds and Biology of Invasive Alien Plants in Canada) now number their contributions at over 160.
While part of the goal of these reviews is to foster future research planning by summarizing current knowledge and
identifying gaps, many other immediate and long-term benefits are also attained. For example, the distribution history
and (specimen based) current state provides information on dispersal patterns and a time sample useful in future analyses as plant distribution responds to environmental change. Dispersal of weeds is partly dependant on the plant’s
biology, but also dependant on its interaction with the vicissitudes of the human “footprint”.
Autecology is not a fashionable pursuit these days, but without knowing how the parts work, is there any hope of
attaining more than a superficial knowledge of the incorporating systems?
