Fourth Sunday of Lent
March 30, 2014
Our fourth week of Lent has fast approached us. How are you doing on YOUR “Journey to Joy”? Are you feeling
and continuing to recognize your hunger? Are you taking that hunger and feeding it with prayer while moving forward in faith?
This week’s Gospel is about Jesus healing a man born blind. Of the five senses, our sight may be one of the
more important senses to us. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, in 2011, nearly 10% of all adult
Americans reported to have severe visual impairments or complete blindness.
When something goes wrong with our physical health, we generally look for a natural or medicinal healing means
to treat our ailment. But in today’s Word of God, we learn of a healing that is divine. The healing is where God is
totally and directly involved. This is a healing that Jesus performed! Our amazing Lord performed miracles in order
to meet the needs of people, but also He used the miracles as a means to prove that He was indeed the Messiah.
Jesus came upon the man who was blind and performed the wonderful miracle. Jesus spat on the ground and
made clay with saliva and anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay and told him to go wash in the pool of
Siloam. What obedience the blind man had! “Go wash in the pool of Siloam,” he was told by Jesus. And so, the
blind man did. He did not go and wash his eyes in a nearby basin, but in the pool he was TOLD to go to. He moved
forward in faith. In faith that what Jesus was telling him to do was the right thing. Upon washing his eyes in the
pool of Siloam, he could see!
Later, many of the once blind man’s neighbors, started to question if he was really the man who was once blind.
The man shared what had happened to him, but his neighbors just could not believe, so they took him to the Pharisees who also questioned him on how he could see. Once again, the man explained to them how Jesus spread the
clay on his eyes. No one believed the man. No one had that faith in Jesus. They could just not understand how a
man could perform a miracle of making a blind man see especially on a day of rest, the Sabbath day.
After many questions from the neighbors and Pharisees not believing that Jesus had performed a miracle, Jesus
came to them. Jesus came to prove the man’s miracle of sight, to show that the once blind man’s personal hunger
was no longer a hunger. The hunger was fed by God.
If you are living in “darkness” today, there is no reason why you cannot learn from the example of the once
blind man. Feel your hunger of darkness, feed it with prayer, and move forward in faith, faith that God promised
us, faith that he will give us all we need. Keep on that Journey to Joy!

St. Lawrence Catholic Community believes we are

prayerful people. As responsible disciples, of Jesus
Christ, we are called to be faithful stewards of our
time, talents, and treasures. We value and foster Catholic education and evangelization. With open hearts and
hands, we reach out to all brothers and sisters, as together we strive to offer hope, act justly, love tenderly
and walk humbly with our God.

All women of the parish are invited to attend the Women’s Club’s next meeting, Thursday, April 10th. It is our palmweaving meeting. We will be working with the Altar Society
women weaving the Easter palms into many stunning designs.
This meeting is precious to us because it is a joint project
with the Altar Society. It is an opportunity to learn the beautiful traditional craft of weaving palms.
All donations are being accepted through April 2 , Mon-Fri
8 am – 5 pm at
Macomb County Department of Human Services

At the meeting this year, we will add the job of filling
Easter Eggs with candy for Fr. Tom Sutherland. He will distribute the eggs to the children on Easter morning after all
the Masses. We will need many extra hands to do both the
palm weaving and the egg filling. The Women’s Club is
providing the candy and the eggs.
Give Me a Break! Many families in our community are
struggling to take care of a loved one at home. For these
full-time caregivers, a break to run errands, go to their
own doctor appointment, or just relax for an hour is often
impossible because their parent or spouse cannot be left
alone. If you have a few hours, once or twice a month, to
just sit with an older or disabled adult, your gift of time
will make a huge difference for these families. No handson care or nursing experience is needed. For more
information, call the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers at
586-757-5551. Learn more their work at www.ivc.info.org.
We unite in fellowship to beautify the altar for Easter. Please mark the date on your calendars. See you there.
You’ll learn a new craft and help make the Easter altar
unique.

With each sermon, he explored parts of the Mass so that

“rushed” upon David after his anointing. St. Paul was
changed by the light of Christ, and so he teaches us to
always be children of the light. And the Blind Man healed
by Jesus sees both the light and the Son of God!
In the midst of the details of daily living, we are
challenged to “give thanks” to the Lord in all things,
especially during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. May this
Lent be a season of prayer, repentance and renewal so
that we can be truly focused on our Lord and say “yes” to
him!
Question of the Week:
Adults: What are you doing in your life right now to move
toward light rather than darkness?
Children: How can you let the light of your
faith in Jesus shine for others to see?

Adult Volunteers Needed...
Are you an adult who is looking for a good opportunity
to give some volunteer time? Are you a student who needs
Christian Service Hours? Are you someone who likes to
bake?
If your answer is yes to any of these questions, then I
have a great opportunity for you to help welcome our new
members of the Catholic faith.
We need some enthusiastic volunteers to help set up,
serve and clean up, or donate baked goods, for the RCIA
reception following the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 19.
The first group of helpers is needed in the morning from
about 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. This group will be setting tables with tablecloths, and centerpieces, decorating the
social hall, creating fruit, vegetable, and dessert trays.
It’s okay if you can’t be there for the entire time, come for
as long as you are available. If you would like to donate a
baked good for the reception, you may drop it off in the
social hall on Saturday morning between 10:00 am – 1:00
pm.
The next group is needed in the evening from about
7:00 pm – midnight. This group will be helping to heat up
the hot dishes, set out the food trays, make punch, help
serve, and clean up. Once again, if you cannot stay for the
entire time, that is okay. Also if you are planning on attending the Easter Vigil, you may still help out after mass
with serving and cleaning up. Anyone who would like to
volunteer for this fun community enriching event, please
fill out the following form and turn in to the parish office.
If you have any questions, please call Angela Kennedy at
739-7406.
Thank you in advance for your assistance,
Angela Kennedy, RCIA Reception Chairperson

The Church Witnesses to
the Truth About Marriage
“Marriage has come to us as a gift of God in establishing
the order of nature. The Catholic community in southeast
Michigan will continue to give witness to the truth that marriage is between one man and one woman, which is the
found-ation for the flourishing of society.”
-- Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron
March 21, 2014
Reversing the will of Michigan voters, a federal judge recently struck down Michigan law confirming the truth that
marriage is an institution between one man and one woman.
This decision is part of an ongoing legal process by which
same-sex couples can be “married” in our state.
Archbishop Vigneron and Michigan’s diocesan bishops have
come to the defense of traditional mar-riage, speaking collectively through the Michigan Catholic Conference, the
Church’s public policy voice in the state. As the case continues to move through the courts, the bishops have emphasized their opposition to legislatively or legally redefining
marriage, while stress-ing that “it is necessary to state clearly that persons with same-sex attraction should not be
judged, but rather accepted with respect, compassion and
sensitivity”

Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministers Are
Ready to Care!
The winter weather we’ve had
recently can be symbolic of what may
sometimes happen in life. A Crisis hits,
and we feel like we’re buried beneath a
drift of snow. Relationships can become
icy, or we can feel frozen by life circumstances. Little
difficulties build up like slush, making us slip and slide,
causing every decision to seem treacherous. Life seems
dreary, and we begin to doubt that spring will ever come.
We can wonder, “Is God even there?”
Stephen Ministers are trained to provide confidential
Christian care, giving you the emotional and spiritual
support you need to make it through a winter in your life.
To learn more about how a Stephen Minister can help you
or someone you know, contact one of our Stephen Ministry
Leaders at 586-731-5347. Our Stephen Ministers are ready
to care for you.
