Work to consolidate Wiesbaden’s Hainerberg shopping and housing areas continues as
current construction projects progress throughout this year and a few new projects are getting
ready to break ground this spring.
The following is an update on several projects that will have impacts in the Hainerberg
Community.
Wiesbaden Middle School
The demolition of older family housing
units is currently taking place at the site of
the new Wiesbaden Middle School located
between Mississippistrasse and Texasstrasse.
Site isolation and construction will begin shortly
thereafter, which will have immediate impacts
on parking and traffic patterns on Hainerberg.
“It’s going to be very busy over at Hainerberg. Please be cautious during this period
as some road changes will occur,” said Col.
Mary Martin, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
commander, during a construction update at
the Community Information Exchange, at the
Community Activities Center, Jan. 26.
“A fair number of parking spots along
Texasstrasse will be absorbed into the Middle
School construction site,” said Edwin Johnson,
director of USAG Wiesbaden Directorate of
Public Works. To mitigate parking concerns,
an alternate surface parking lot will be built,
simultaneously, across from the Wiesbaden
Entertainment Center on Mississippistrasse,
and will include a pedestrian path connecting
to the current school.
As part of the middle school project, a
construction vehicle access road will be created
from B455, across Mississippistrasse, straight
into the site to isolate construction traffic and
activity from the community. Residents can
expect to see additional perimeter fencing as
the site is secured.
“The ‘bubble’ construction technique is the
least disruptive to Hainerberg’s access control
point, safe for our residential communities and
an efficient way to keep work on the middle

children had an evening of dinosaursized fun recently during an event at
the Wiesbaden Library Jan. 28.
Participants listened to stories
about dinosaurs, went on a scavenger
hunt, had a chance to get temporary
tattoos and colored on a giant tyrannosaurus rex coloring sheet.
Children spoke up about their dinosaur knowledge during storytime,
standing up and raising their hands
and reciting names of dinosaurs and
even comparing the size of a tyrannosaurus rex’s teeth to bananas.

RoboWarriors gear up for 2016 season
By Erin Gavle
Special to the Herald Union
With 80s music blaring in the background, parents milling about and a five
table spread of food, one might have
confused the RoboWarriors’ Season
Kickoff event on January 9th for an end
of season sports banquet. In fact, this
was only the beginning.
For the nearly 40 student programmers and engineers that make up the
RoboWarriors Club, this is the beginning
of the “time that we go kinda crazy,”
according to RoboWarriors advisor,
Frank Pendzich.
A video created by First Robotics,
one of the organizations that sponsors
this competition, was shown to all participating schools around the world, and
ended with the reveal of the field the robot
would have to maneuver around, and the
objectives it would have to accomplish.
This year, “The Game,” as First refers to
it, involves throwing balls into a castle,
storming enemy defenses and “capturing” the castle by having the robot pull
itself up to the top.
Alexis Bennett, RoboWarriors treasurer, echoed the club’s excitement for
this year’s mission.
“I started flipping out. I thought it
was the really coolest thing,” he said.
“[We] all thought it was [going to be]
jousting for some reason, and now it’s
[everything] we all thought of. [It’s]
everything we’ve ever wanted when we
saw the teaser video, we were all super
hype about it.”
Time is of the essence for these
engineers. This event marks the beginning of the six weeks known as “build
season,” which is the only time these
Warriors have to construct their robot
for competition.
According to Bennett, this is when
living in Germany becomes a challenge.
“It’s harder for us when it comes to build
season because we’re overseas. We have
to get [our robot] done for a certain day
to ship it, and then we have a weight
requirement and a height requirement.
[We’re] unlike students in the States, who
get as much time [as they want] and can
do whatever they want with [it.]”
This is also the time for those interested in travelling to the competition
to step up and participate. There is no
seniority system in RoboWarriors, so
the students who clock the most hours
get to go on the trips.
Bennett explains, “You can’t just join
the club and expect to go on the trips. It’s
who puts in the work and who puts in the
motivation that gets to go on the trips.”
Dell McMullen, Director of Department of Defense Education Activity
Wiesbaden High School RoboWarriors team members scribble ideas after
watching the introduction video for the 2016 robotics season. Students
will build a fully functional robot designed to meet this year’s challenges.
— Europe, attended the kickoff event,
and shared her thoughts on the no seniority rule.
“I’m so glad that [Mr.] Pendzich
does that because we all have [positive]
attributes, [but] at the end of the day, it
comes down to how hard we work, how
much we are willing to contribute and
how much we are willing to be part of
a team [that works] toward the greater
good,” she said. “I’m delighted that he
is really fostering that, and that he’s
giving those individuals the chance to
go forward.”
After receiving their challenge, the
RoboWarriors immediately launched
into their brainstorming phase. A pack
of students rushed to a corner of the
multi purpose room to start drafting and
drawing on the giant sticky notes the
club officers had covered the walls with.
At the same time, Pendzich briefed
the parents on just how intense the
season was going to get. “Please know
that this is going to be very taxing on
your students. I don’t want the rest of
their studies to suffer because of their
focus on this event. They have to learn
how to manage the amount of time in
their regular life, the regular work they
have to do, and still participate in First.”
Although it is a significant time
commitment, McMullen explains why
she supports having Robotics clubs in
DoDEA schools.
“I think it’s extremely important
[in our schools] to give our students as
many opportunities as possible to go
into different areas where they’ll have
a chance. And in order to do that they’ll
need to have sharp problem solving
skills, they’ll need to be creative, they’ll
need to work together as a team to solve
these problems — problems that we
don’t even know what they’re going to
look like. That’s why I’m so supportive
of RoboWarriors.”
(Editor’s note: this is the first article
in a series following the Wiesbaden High
School RoboWarriors as they build and
compete in their 2016 robotics competitions. Erin Gavle and Jackie Workman
are seniors at WHS and career practicum
students in the Public Affairs Office).

CDC travel health notice: Zika virus Design announced
Release by
Regional Health Command Europe
In response to reports in Brazil of microcephaly
(a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than
expected) and other poor pregnancy outcomes
in babies of mothers who were infected with the
Zika virus while pregnant, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a travel
alert for people traveling to regions and certain
countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.
The notice is an Alert Level 2 that calls for travelers
to follow enhanced precautions or recommended
preventive measures for these destinations.
While some travel related cases of Zika virus
infection have been reported in Europe, no cases
have originated here. The virus can only be spread
by being bitten by an infected mosquito and the
type of mosquito that can spread the disease is not
found in Europe.
The Zika virus is spread to people through
mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of
Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and
conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually
mild with symptoms lasting from several days to
a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization
is uncommon. No locally transmitted Zika cases
have been reported in the continental United States,
but cases have been reported in returning travelers.
Locally transmitted Zika virus has been reported
in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The number
of Zika cases among travelers visiting or returning
to the United States will likely increase.
Who is at risk of being infected? Anyone who
is living in or traveling to an area where Zika virus
is found who has not already been infected with
Zika virus, including pregnant women. Until more
is known and out of an abundance of caution, the
CDC recommends special precautions for pregnant
women and women trying to become pregnant:
• Pregnant women in any trimester should
consider postponing travel to the areas where Zika
virus transmission is ongoing. Pregnant women
who do travel to one of these areas should talk
to their doctor or other healthcare provider first
and strictly follow steps to avoid mosquito bites
during the trip.
• Women trying to become pregnant should
consult with their healthcare provider before
traveling to these areas and strictly follow steps to
prevent mosquito bites during the trip. For more
information on the Zika virus, visit the CDC web
site at http://www.cdc.gov/zika/index.html.
Countries and territories with active Zika virus
transmission include:
AMERICAS Barbados • Bolivia • Brazil •
Colombia • Ecuador • El Salvador • French Guiana • Guadeloupe • Guatemala • Guyana • Haiti
• Honduras • Martinique • Mexico • Panama •
Paraguay • Puerto Rico • Saint Martin • Suriname • Venezuela; PACIFIC ISLANDS • Samoa;
AFRICA • Cape Verde

for WWI memorial
By Lisa Ferdinando
Department of Defense News
The service and sacrifice of those who served in World
War I a century ago finally will be honored in a memorial
in the nation’s capital, said Edwin Fountain, the commission’s vice chairman. Fountain, the grandson of two World
War I veterans, announced the winning design concept at
the National Press Club here.
The winning concept is “The Weight of Sacrifice” by
25-year-old Joe Weishaar, a yet-to-be licensed architect,
and veteran sculptor Sabin Howard.
The design met the challenges of creating a concept for
such an important memorial, Fountain said. Those challenges, he explained, included finding an appropriate way
to honor the magnitude of the service and sacrifice of the
nearly 5 million Americans who served and the more than
116,000 who died. The design concept had to work into the
surrounding landscape, Fountain said. It had to complement
the iconic architecture and design of historic Washington,
and serve as a city park.
The memorial will be located in Pershing Park, near the
White House. While the National Mall, where other war
memorials are located, would be the preferred location, a law
prohibits new construction on that expanse, Fountain said.
Besides serving as a permanent tribute to the service
members, the memorial is meant to educate Americans and
inspire them to learn more about the largely overlooked
war that has profound influence to this day, Fountain said.
The winning concept will go through an extensive
design review from a number of agencies, including the
Commission of Fine Arts, the National Capital Planning
Commission, and the National Park Service, Fountain said.

Hainerberg Access Control Point
Work has begun on the new Hainerberg Access

main access to Hainerberg from the B455, through
Washingtonstrasse. A traffic light and additional turn
lanes will be added at the intersection of B455 and
Washingtonstrasse.
The new ACP is expected to reduce traffic through
the housing areas of Hainerberg and provide direct
access to B455 leading to Clay Kaserne, Johnson said.
Once complete, the current ACP at New York

leaving one ID check to enter Hainerberg facilities
instead of two.
“The new ACP will really allow us to take advantage
of the facilities in the former PX area,” said Johnson.

Hainerberg and Aukamm Housing
There are a variety of repairs and upgrades taking place in a majority of the housing on Hainerberg
and Aukamm. Improvements include repairing and
painting exterior basement staircases, waterproofing
foundations, and the installation of energy-efficient
LED lighting.
“The waterproofing project involves trenching
around foundations and will be the most noticeable
to residents; however, units will always be safely accessible,” said Johnson. DPW will contact families on
an individual basis prior to conducting any work at
their building. These housing upgrades will continue
through August 2016.
Pedestrian Lighting
An additional community improvement project
currently underway is the installation of 300, pedestrian-level lights on walking paths in the Crestview
and Aukamm housing areas. “The bollard lights will
enhance safety and increase the walkability of these
communities at night,” added Johnson.
Repairs to exterior basement staircases are
underway at several Hainerberg Housing units
and includes waterproofing foundations.

Hesse hosts Commemoration for the Victims of National Socialism
By Pascal Schnitzler
Press Spokesman for the Hessian State Parliament
The annual commemoration event for the victims
of the Nazi regime (national socialism), hosted jointly
by the Hessian State Parliament, Hessian State Government, Hessian State Welfare Association, Hessian
Cities and Municipalities Association, as well as the
Hessian County Association was held Jan. 26 at the
Hessian Landtag building. This year’s commemoration
event ran under the heading of “ghetto.”
The commemoration dates back to a recommendation made in 1996 by the former German Federal
President Roman Herzog, who suggested to have an
annual event on Jan. 27 (editor’s note: the anniversary
of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp)
dedicated to the victims of national socialism. In
2005, this day was named the International Holocaust
Remembrance Day by the United Nations.
The President of the Hessian State Parliament
Norbert Kartmann welcomed the guests to the commemoration ceremony, which took place for the first
time in 2002 at the Hessian Landtag.
“For 20 years we have been commemorating the
victims of national socialism on that day. This memorial event has become the Hessian Landtag’s and the
Hessian State’s obligation. Hence it was also important
to hold this event together with our towns and cities.
It also is the whole country’s obligation to remember
the European victims of national socialism; the Jewish
citizens of the villages and cities that were friends and
neighbors,” said Kartmann.
“Even seven decades after the end of the Nazi
regime, nothing has been forgotten. History does not
repeat itself, but one should know of it. Remembering various events of the persecution and murder of
European Jews, Sinti and Roma, Christians, people
with different political views, always form the thematic
background of what we are talking about and what
we are documenting. “
The history of the Jewish ghetto exemplifies human suffering under national socialism. The Warsaw
Ghetto began in 1940 and ended in May 1943, after
the suppression of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto
by the Nazi regime.
The ghetto of Vilna began at the end of August
1941. In January 1942, a resistance group was formed
in the ghetto, and in September 1943 it was evacuated
by the Nazis and the Jewish population was deported.
The ceremony was framed with poetry and music
recitals, originating in those two ghettos.
“We are obligated to keep this Memorial Day and
many other dates of the past century in our memory.
This culture of remembrance, which has developed
over the decades of democratic Germany, is indispensable for our country. And this memory requires the
commitment of many people in our society,” said the
president of the parliament.

in the civilian sector,” Lowrie said.
Dailey gave insight into an initiative that will
provide Soldiers with more civilian accreditation
based on their military training. Although a system
exists in which the American Council on Education
awards college credit for military experience, Dailey
explained that the new initiative would allow the
Army to award college credits based on Soldiers’
experience level, eventually awarding a master’s
degree upon graduating the U.S. Army Sergeants
Major Academy.
The initiative also aims at providing Soldiers,
who choose to leave the Army, a civilian-equivalent
certification so they may have an easier time finding
similar work outside the military.
Dailey said Soldiers should expect to see this
initiative take shape in the near future.
After a few popular overhauls already implemented, including the Army’s tattoo policy and the
integration of black socks, the future looks favorable
for junior Soldiers.
“His mindset is listening to the Soldiers and
hearing what we want and what needs to happen,”
Fry said. “You hear a lot of NCOs talk about the
new Army in a negative way but his focus is on the
new Army and making the Army better and that’s
what makes him different.”
“I’m extremely proud that I joined — knowing
that I have great leadership at the top,” Lowrie
said. “Before, I thought of the SMA basically as
a figurehead, but now I see he really is hands on,
wanting our questions and going in depth and giving us a genuine answer lets me know that he’s not
just a figurehead, he’s actually doing.”

Museum Wiesbaden will feature a
Hunters and Gatherers exhibit, including artifacts from the South African

Most of the pieces were brought back
by a Wiesbaden local, Werner Hammer, after his many expeditions to the
various countries home to early hunters

The exhibition started September
2015 and will end May 22. Ticket prices
are 7 euro for temporary exhibits and 4

Hessen Park
Hessenpark is an open-air, historical
museum just north of Frankfurt, and it
is well worth the 35-minute drive. The
museum allows people to see firsthand a
village from about 400 years ago. If you
visit, plan on spending the day walking
through gardens, seeing animals and
touring beautiful, historic buildings.
As a side note, Germany has many
“Freiland” museums like Hessen Park,
and you’re likely to find one relatively
nearby no matter where you’re stationed
or visiting.
As a rule, they’re always well done
and worth the time to visit — especially
if you have kids. There is plenty of room

Dr. Dell McMullen, Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Europe Director,
has named Dr. Liz Dunham as the
DoDEA Kaiserslautern District
Superintendent. She will maintain
the oversight of the Bavaria District
until it closes in July 2016 at which
point the schools and students previously aligned to the Bavaria and
Kaiserslautern Districts will become
a newly established district, DoDEA
Europe East. The selection was made
through a competitive process.
Dr. Dunham is a career educator
with extensive teaching and administrative experience. She joined
DoDEA nearly 30 years ago as a
staff developer and went on to hold
a number of positions of increasing
responsibility before being selected
as the superintendent of the DoDEA
Europe Bavaria District in November
2012.
Dr. Dunham will assume re-

July 11, 2016, she will be the Superintendent for the newly-organized

DoDEA Europe East District is a
newly-established district under the
Restructuring for Student Achievement (RSA) priority which has a goal
of enabling DoDEA to become a more

by implementing the best practices
of U.S. state and local education
agencies.
In announcing the selection,
Dr. McMullen cited Dr. Dunham’s
extensive experience and leadership
in DoDEA’s schools.
“Dr. Dunham brings a wealth of
experience to the DoDEA Europe
Kaiserslautern District,” said Dr.
McMullen. “She is an effective, caring leader and just the right person to
lead the district through this transition
period as we restructure to meet the
needs of our students.”
Dr. Dunham earned her B.A. from
the University of Iowa. She com-

Ph.D. from the Cambridge Institute
of Education in Cambridge, England.
Dr. Dunham was the first American
to earn the degree in this British

In reflecting on her selection, Dunham said she is honored to lead the
current Bavaria and Kaiserslautern
districts in the transition to the new

DoD increases military maternity leave
By Lisa Ferdinando
DoD News, Defense Media Activity
The Defense Department is increasing military maternity leave and
instituting other changes in an effort
to support military families, improve
retention and strengthen the force of the
future, Defense Secretary Ash Carter
said today.
Women across the joint force can
now take 12 weeks of fully paid maternity leave, Carter told reporters at the
Pentagon. The 12-week benefit is double
the amount of time for paid maternity
leave from when he became defense
chief nearly a year ago, he noted.
“This puts DOD in the top tier of
institutions nationwide and will have
significant influence on decision-making for our military family members,”
Carter said.
While being an incentive for attracting and retaining talent, the secretary
said, the benefit also promotes the health
and wellness of mothers through facilitating recovery and promoting feeding
and bonding with the infant.
“Our calculation is quite simple - we
want our people to be able to balance
two of the most solemn commitments
they can ever make: a commitment to
serve their country and a commitment
to start and support a family,” he said.
The announcement builds on
previously announced initiatives on
strengthening the force of the future, he
said. Those previous reforms, he added,
included opening all remaining combat
occupations to women.
The maternity leave decision applies
to all service members in the active-duty
component and to reserve-component
members serving in a full-time status or
on definite active-duty recall or mobilization orders in excess of 12 months.
The 12 weeks is less than the Navy’s
decision last year to institute 18 weeks of
fully-paid maternity leave, Carter noted.
Sailors and Marines, who currently
are pregnant or who become pregnant
within 30 days of the enactment of the
policy, can still take the full 18 weeks
of paid leave, he said.
To better support new mothers when
they return to work, Carter said, he is
requiring that a mothers’ room be made
available in every DOD facility with
more than 50 women. In addition, the
Defense Department is seeking legislation to expand military paternity leave
from the current 10-day leave benefit to
a 14-day noncontinuous leave benefit,
he said.
The Defense Department subsidizes
child care on military installations to
ensure its affordability, Carter said.
However, he added, military families
often have to use outside providers
because the hours at military child care
facilities do not align with the work
schedules of service members.
With those challenges in mind, the
Defense Department is increasing child
care access to 14 hours of the day across
the force, he said.
“By providing our troops with child
care they can rely on from before reveille
until after taps, we provide one more
reason for them to stay on board,” he
said. “We show them that supporting a
family and serving our country are by
no means incompatible goals.”
Carter noted that military members
might want to stay at their current

location for a variety of family-related
reasons, such as wanting to remain near
relatives, be close to a medical facility
that specializes in care needed for a
child with a medical condition, or have
a child finish out the same high school.
When the needs of the force permit,
the secretary said, commanders will be
empowered to make reasonable accommodations to allow service members to
remain, in exchange for an additional
service obligation.
The military asks its men and women
to make incomparable sacrifices, Carter
said, potentially putting them in situations where they could suffer injuries
that would prevent them from having
children in the future.
Taking into account the tremendous
sacrifices military members make, the
Defense Department will cover the
cost of freezing sperm or eggs through
a pilot program for active-duty service
members, Carter said.
The department also is looking at
how it can provide reproductive technologies like IVF to a wider population,
he said. Currently, the DOD provides
reduced-cost treatment at six locations.
These benefits provide the force
greater confidence about their future,
and they allow greater flexibility for
starting a family, Carter said.
They are one more tool, he said,
to make the military a family-friendly
employer that honors the desires of
those who want to commit fully to their
careers or serve courageously in combat
while preserving their ability to have
children in the future.
Application deadline nears for children scholarships
By Mike Perron
Defense Commissary Agency
The time remaining to apply for one of the 2016
Scholarships for Military Children, each worth $2,000,
is rapidly dwindling, as this year’s Feb. 12 deadline
approaches.
Applications, including the required essay, must
be received at a military commissary by the close of
business that day. They should be hand-delivered, but
if that is not convenient, they can be sent to a commissary via the U.S. Postal Service or FEDEX/UPS.
They cannot be faxed or emailed.
At least one scholarship will be awarded at every
commissary location with qualified applicants.
This year’s essay question addresses childhood
obesity and its effect on military recruitment: “Obesity
is among the leading causes of military ineligibility
among people 17 to 24, affecting nearly 30 percent of
men and women in this age group. Specifically, how
would you address this problem and what are your
proposed solutions? What would be the challenges
with implementing your plan?”
Essays must be 500 words or less, typewritten or
computer-generated, double spaced, and no longer
than two pages. Last year, 700 students were awarded
scholarships from the 4,000 applicants, who submitted
entries by the deadline.
Applications are available in commissaries worldwide and online. To apply for a scholarship, the student
must be a dependent, unmarried child, younger than 21
(or 23, if enrolled as a full-time student at a college or
university) of either a service member on active duty,
a reservist, a guardsman or a retiree, or the survivor
of a military member who died while on active duty,
or the survivor of a retiree.
Eligibility is determined using the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS,
database. Applicants should ensure that they, as well
as their sponsor, are enrolled in the DEERS database
and have a current military ID card. The applicant
must also be planning to attend or already attending
an accredited college or university, full time, in fall
2016 or be enrolled in a program of study designed to
transfer directly into a four-year program.
Applicants, who are awarded a full scholarship or
receive an appointment to one of the military academies
or affiliated preparatory schools, are not eligible to
receive funds from this program. A full scholarship
is usually defined as one that provides for payment of
tuition, books, lab fees and other expenses.
The scholarship program is administered by the
Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization
that provides assistance to service members and their
families. Scholarship Managers, a national, nonprofit,
scholarship-management services organization, manages and awards the military scholarships. If students
have questions about the scholarship program application, they should call Scholarship Managers at
856-616-9311 or email them at militaryscholar@
scholarshipmanagers.com.

For your health
Overcome your weight-loss plateau
By Human Performance
Resource Center Staff
Photo by Vladimir Gjorgiev / Shutterstock.com
Have you been watching what you eat and
exercising regularly,
but for some reason,
the scale just won’t
budge? You might be
at a “plateau” in your
weight-loss journey.
But with continued
effort and persistence,
you can do it! If you
want to shed those last
few pounds, try these
ideas on for size:
Track it. To keep old,
unhealthy eating habits
at bay, keep a food
diary or record your
intake through the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s SuperTracker.
This online program
helps you see where
your calories are coming from. Don’t forget
to watch your portion sizes too.
Stick to your plan. Remember the fundamentals of a healthy eating plan: nutrient-rich, lean
sources of protein such as fish, poultry, beans,
nuts, and low-fat dairy products. Make sure to
include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables too.
It’s okay to indulge a little, but too many “cheat
days” can ruin all your hard work.
Eat protein. Protein helps preserve lean body
mass (muscle) during weight loss, promote fat loss,
and contribute to a feeling of fullness. Use HPRC’s
Protein Requirements infosheet to calculate your
individual protein needs.
Rethink your drinks. Alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda, sweet tea, juice,
energy drinks, and sports drinks can add too many
calories and prevent you from losing weight. Stick
to water and low-fat milk (or soymilk) during meals
and in-between to stay hydrated. Three servings
of milk per day is the limit though!
Shake things up. Varying the type, intensity,
duration, and frequency of your exercise is a great
way to challenge yourself and prevent boredom—
and it can make a big difference toward reaching
your goal.
Whatever you do, don’t give up. Achieving and
maintaining a healthy weight is better for your
health, career, and performance.
TRICARE Pharmacy copays change Feb. 1
By TRICARE
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Military pharmacies
and TRICARE Pharmacy home delivery will remain the lowest cost pharmacy option for TRICARE beneficiaries when some TRICARE pharmacy copays change in 2016. On Feb. 1, 2016,
most copays for prescription drugs at home
delivery and retail network pharmacies will increase slightly.
The 2016 National Defense Authorization
Act, or NDAA, requires TRICARE to change its
prescription copays. All drugs at military pharmacies, and generic drugs through home deliv-
ery, are still available at no cost to beneficiaries.
Copays for brand name drugs through home delivery increase from $16 to $20, for up to a 90day supply. At retail pharmacies, generic drug
copays go from $8 to $10, and brand name drug
copays go from $20 to $24 dollars, for up to a
30-day supply. Copays for non-formulary drugs
and for drugs at non-network pharmacies will
also change.
Beneficiaries can save up to $208 in 2016 for
each brand name prescription drug they switch
from retail pharmacy to home delivery. Home
delivery offers safe and convenient delivery of
your prescription drugs right to your mailbox.

Sleep is a performance asset
By Human Performance Resource Center Staff

Sleep is vital. Think about it: sleep loss causes
performance to suffer, but getting plenty of sleep
results in better performance. Most people wouldn’t
consider going without food or water, and sleep
is no different — it’s a necessity. Lack of sleep
is equivalent to being drunk. In fact, after being
awake for 18-20 hours, you’d function as if you
had a blood-alcohol content of .1%, or about four
drinks for a 150-pound man. Little or no sleep affects your eye-hand coordination, reaction time, and
multitasking abilities — and how you remember
important sequences, remain attentive, and stay
organized. If you’re tired, you may be able to learn
skills and work well enough, but training while
fatigued might impact your ability to do your best.
Many people believe that they can overcome
being tired or “get used to it.” But evidence suggests sleeping only 6 hours can jeopardize your
resilience, health, and well-being. As people
become more sleep-deprived, they become less
aware that they’re impaired. When someone says,
“I’m used to being tired,” they’re simply used to
having impaired awareness and judgment. When
possible, sleep more to help boost your energy
level, thinking ability, and readiness.

It’s Faschi
Annual celebr

Get your Halloween costume
back out of the closet and get
ready to shout “Helau!” as loud
as you can – it’s that time of the
year when Germany celebrates its
“fifth” season.
Every February, Fasching gets
into full swing with big parades on
the streets and fairs in the cities
to celebrate the beginning of the
Lenten season.
The early beginnings of Fasching, Carneval or how the locals of
the Rhein Main area call it – “FastPhotos by Anemone Rueger nacht” – date back to around 3,000

take part in the 2015 Mainz Fasching parade.
Even the Romans celebrated
their god Saturnus with a big
festival in January and people in
the medieval times continued this
tradition by dressing up and dancing around the castles, mocking
the clergy.
Although the Fasching tradition almost died out during the
Reformation and was halted again
during the two world wars, it came
back to full bloom in the 1950’s,
especially in Köln, Duesseldorf
and Mainz, where it gave people
in the post-war era new hope and
encouraged them to “laugh in
tears” (Lache unter Tränen).
In modern times, the three cities
are Germany’s Fasching capitals.
The big party starts out on Thursday – this year on Thursday, Feb.
4, when women carry a pair of
scissors to cut off the ties of men,
literally cutting off the symbol of
men’s power.
On Friday, the so-called Soot
Friday, children are allowed to
smear soot into people’s faces.
However, this custom is not practiced much anymore.
Saturday brings the first big
parades to the cities. Residents
of Wiesbaden are lucky, because
they have access to the Fasching
festivities in two German cities –
Wiesbaden and Mainz.
