Penduduk Kampong Glam yang dihormati,
Baru-baru ini semasa lawatan rumah-ke-rumah beberapa
penduduk telah mencadangkan berbagai huraian tentang isu
kemudahan awam menurut pengalaman mereka. Cadangan
tersebut walaupun tidak selengkapnya namun ada ciri
kebaikannya. Saya sangat terharu apabila mereka bersetuju
untuk bertemu lagi dan berbincang dengan lebih terperinci.
Peristiwa ini mengimbas ingatan saya tentang kisah tauladan
“Gajah dengan Enam Orang Buta”. Setiap orang buta itu
menceritakan sifat gajah menurut bahagian tubuh gajah yang
beliau sentuh. Tetapi hakikatnya mereka boleh betul dan juga
boleh salah, kerana pendapat masing masing hanya tertakluk
pada satu bahagian saja. Pengajaran dari kisah tauladan ini
sesuai digunakan dalam segala segi kehidupan kita.
Sebagai contoh, bila kita bersapa dengan seseorang,
biasanya kita menilai watak seseorang itu dari komen orang
lain. Saya telah pelajari bahawa orang yang saya telah
dinasihati untuk tidak menjalin persahabatan akhirnya saya
dapati beliau ialah seorang yang mulia peribadinya. Oleh
demikian, penting bagi kita mendapatkan maklumat
tambahan sebelum menafikan sesuatu.
Kisah tauladan ini memberi saya pengajaran bahawa saya
harus mendapatkan maklumat dan pandangan lain sebelum
membuat sesuatu keputusan perihal sesuatu insan atau
masalah. Walaupun mudah diungkap tetapi sukar diamalkan.
Namun demikian ia adalah suatu amalan yang sangat
berguna.
Saya harap kisah tauladan ini memberi contoh yang
berguna kepada anda. Semoga Tahun Baru 2012 membawa
kemesraan yang lebih kepada sekelian penduduk Kampong
Glam sehingga kehidupan dan jalinan kemasyarakatan kita
menjadi segar dan berjaya.

A WORD FROM YOUR MP
Dear Kampong Glam residents,
Recently, at a house-to-house visit, several residents
separately suggested to me different ways of resolving an
estate amenities issue, based on their own life experiences.
Although each suggestion had merit, each was not complete
enough. I was very heartened when we all agreed these
suggestions needed more thought, and even agreed to
meet up to brainstorm for better and more lasting solutions.
This incident reminds me of one of my favourite parables,
“The Elephant and the 6 Blind Men”. In this parable, the 6
blind men described the elephant based on the part of the
elephant they touched. Everyone felt that his description
was correct. The truth of the matter was, their descriptions
were both right and wrong. Because each only touched a
part of the elephant, their views were only partial.
I found the moral of the parable applicable to many areas
of life.

For instance, at the interpersonal level, it is common for
us to arrive at conclusions about people based on the little
hearsay we hear about them. Some people whom I was
advised to avoid, turned out to be good people when I finally
got to know them. I found it useful to obtain more information
about people before writing them off too hastily.
最近，我在走访组屋时，有几户居民不约而同向我反应同
一个问题，他们根据各自的生活经验，向我提出了一些解
决方法，这些建议都有可取之处，但还不够全面的解决问
题，不过，令我感到非常欣慰的是，大家最终都同意，我
们应该聚在一起更深入的探讨，一起寻求更好的解决方
法。
The parable of “The Elephant and the 6 Blind Men” taught
me a powerful life lesson – that I should try to seek out
relevant data and other perspectives for a fuller picture
before I arrive at conclusions about people or situations. It
is a valuable lesson which is easier said than done, but a
useful one.
这事件提醒了我一则最喜欢的寓言 “瞎子摸象”。 6个
盲人局部触摸大象的不同部位，然后按照他们触摸的部位
来形容大象。其实，他们的形容有对也有错，因为他们都
只触摸到大象的局部，所以，他们对大象的印象也是局部
的。
I hope you find this parable a
meaningful one too.
May the year 2012 bring us all in

so that we can all find more
complete and better measures
to make our community and
homes a vibrant and happy one.

生活中，假如我们一不小心, 我们也很容易变成“瞎子摸
象”。
例如在人与人之间的相处上。我察觉到我们很容易只凭片
面的接触与所听到的就对一些人下定论。曾经也有人劝我
不要接近某些人，但是，当我亲自与他们接触后，发现他
们都有过人之处, 改变了我对他们的印象。我学会了在我
收集更多详细信息之前时，应避免对人太快下定论。
“瞎子摸象”对我来说是人生宝贵的一课，不论在工作或
生活上，它都提醒我，在观察一个人或了解一件事时，要
聆听并结合不同的看法，尽量参考不同观点。用这种方式
解决问题也更能达到更好的效果。
我希望这则寓言对大家也有宝贵的应用。
寄望2012年能把甘榜格南所有居民联系起来，一起找到
完整和更好的措施，让我们这个社区与家庭充满活力与快
乐。

t’s the start of the New Year 2012, and what better way than to
spend it with residents and community leaders of our Kg Glam
constituency in our annual Community Engagement Day. The
morning started off with a warm up exercise before going for a
morning healthy walk along the Singapore River. Police and NEA
also set up booths to promote Crime Prevention and Recycling
Programme, and there was also balloon sculpting demonstration.
What a fun way to start the New Year!

as Kampong Glam grassroots and residents celebrate the traditional mooncake festival, with the launch
officiated by our MP Ms Ms Denise Phua on 3 September 2011.

elebrating the Mid-Autumn festival with our Kampong Glam residents,
senior citizens and children were our Residents’ Committees and
Adviser Ms Denise Phua. The children had fun parading the lanterns
around and the elderly citizens enjoyed the entertainment provided for them.

ampong Glam held its annual Deepavali night at the Kampong Glam
Community Club. The Guest of Honour was our Adviser Ms Denise
Phua. It was a night filled with lots of festivities as participants,
residents and grassroots members soak in the celebration of the Festival
of Lights.

respective Residents’ Committees. The events were fun-filled, as residents
of all races congregated together to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

here would Christmas be without parties? Children were the most excited
about this popular festivity in the holiday calendar. Grassroots members
were decked out in their Christmas best to entertain the residents. “Elvis”
was even sighted among the merry crowd. Community partners from the churches
also shared the message of Christmas.

T
he Annual Children’s Day Party was held at the Rochor Centre central
concourse in October. A Magic Show by Tricky Patrick was the highlight
of the party where children had fun trying to figure out how he managed
to get things disappear.

Opening of Waterloo Community Garden
and Fitness Corner
T
he Waterloo Community Garden, with a new exercise and fitness
corner, was launched in December 2011 by Adviser Denise Phua.
A playground was incorporated into the garden, where children
and adults alike could participate in the exercises and enjoy the plants
around the vicinity.

Opening of Wesley Senior Activity Centre
T

he Wesley Senior Activity Centre, or WSAC, was set up at Block 25
Jalan Berseh. It was initiated by our Adviser to provide an activity centre
for the elderly living in the Kelantan precinct.
The centre is managed/funded by Wesley Methodist Church and MCYS. Its
objective is to give priority to the elderly above 60 years living at Block 25
Jalan Berseh.
The centre opens from Monday to Friday (8.30am till 5.00pm).
There are now a total of 150 elderly residents registered as WSAC members.
