From the Vicar
Greetings to all in the name of Jesus Christ!
The vicar was going round the room, greeting all who had come to the social evening with a cheerful word, and enquiring tenderly after their families. “Ah, Mrs
Smith,” he said, with an encouraging smile, “how lovely to see you here. And how
is your dear husband?” “He passed away last month, vicar,” came the reply.
“Good, good,” said the vicar, and moved on to greet the next guest.

Quite why that little situation (fictional, I hope and pray) popped into my mind, I’m
not entirely sure. But on thinking about it, it probably has something to do with a
subconscious awareness once or twice recently, of situations when I have been
talking to someone whose attention was clearly elsewhere. Not that I blame them –
people have a lot on their minds these days, and thinking about something else is
probably more enjoyable than attending to what I might be feeling or saying. But
even so, it’s not very polite.
When I am more than usually fed up with life, the universal church and everything, one of the remedies that keeps me going is to reflect on the way Jesus dealt
with people. To put it simply, he paid attention to the person in front of him. When
an important official and a desperate, insignificant woman were competing for his
attention, he did not allow the evident impatience of everyone around him to distract him from meeting the woman’s needs first. It’s a key way, it seems to me, of
retaining our own humanity and enhancing the humanity of others: treat them as
significant, real, worthwhile, valuable – you can choose your preferred word.
My experience suggests that most of us are really pretty fragile, beneath whatever
degree of confidence we are able to display as our public face. That means we
need to be treated gently, told that we are loved and valued, accorded respect in
far greater measure than we usually are; and of course that we must do as we
would be done by – even to the cold caller on the end of the phone or the checkout operator in the supermarket. A little prayer I sometimes use is “Lord, help me
now to see your face in others, and help them to find your presence in me.”
I was once asked by someone whose faith was more clearly defined than mine
whether I shared his belief in a personal devil. It was clear what answer he expected! I said that I believed in a personal God, whose chief concern for our
earthly life was that we should become fully human in the pattern of Jesus – so it
followed that if I believed in a devil, such a being would be essentially impersonal,
set on reducing us to complete impersonality, and ultimately to complete nonexistence.
Just looking the other person in the eye is important. At church, we often greet one
another formally during the service with a handshake, and the words, “Peace be
with you.” I am often puzzled by the fact that those I greet do not seem able to
look straight at me. Are they afraid that I might be able to see into their souls – or
that they might see into mine and not like the view?
God is to be found in all that makes us more human.
Here’s looking at you!

SKIRLAUGH VILLAGE HALL REPORT – JUNE 2011
Thank you to everyone who took part in the Scarecrow
Trail and the Royal Wedding Fun Day over the April/May
Bank Holiday. We were very lucky with the weather over
the weekend which was dry and bright, if just a little
windy!!! (See full article for more details of the event and
thank yous).
On Friday 6 May, Badapple Theatre Company visited
Skirlaugh again with ‘The James Herriot Story’ as part of
their National Tour. This was a really entertaining evening, and it was good to see faces ‘old and new’ attending
the show from Skirlaugh and surrounding villages. The
Village Hall Committee received some great comments at
the end of the show, including, ‘When are they coming
again?’

Skirlaugh’s Scarecrow Trail
SKIRLAUGHS 3rd ANNUAL
SCARECROW TRAIL
This year as advertised the Scarecrows came out early to celebrate
the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine. The sky was
black early on Friday 29th April as the scarecrows went
up and we all feared the worst that there was going to be
a torrential downpour. But we were extremely lucky, as
the black clouds disappeared and thankfully the sunshine
that took its place remained throughout the Bank Holiday
weekend. It was however very windy and the hardiness
of the some of the scarecrows were put to the test. In fact
some of the scarecrows looked like they had come alive
as they moved about so much in the heavy breeze!! Due
to the lovely sunny weather there was a large turnout of
people wandering around the village looking at the scarecrows and doing the competition trail.
Although there weren’t as many scarecrows entered this
year the standard of those that were was exceptional. We
would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who
took the time to make a scarecrow because without you
this event just wouldn’t happen! And what a variety of
scarecrows there were waving their union jack flags.. The
Royal Family turned out to view our very own William
and Catherine scarecrows being married at The Chapel.
Prince Harry however was seen celebrating at The Duke
of York pub with a local barmaid having one last drink
before taking up his Best Man duties!! Other famous
names came to join in the happy occasion, Simon Cowell, Noel Edmunds, Belle, Mario, Mr Tumble, Pocahontas,
Cruella, Little Mermaid, Where’s Wally, Darth Vader, and
Michael Schumacher to name but a few. Others such as
the kick boxer, golfer, pig farmer, belly dancer, chimney
sweep, school children, weather forecaster, campers and
wedding planner waved their flags while carrying on with
their activities. The workman however was too busy on
the toilet but the parachutist flew in especially. Other
scarecrow weddings were also taking part in the village.
There was the Garden wedding, The Halloween wedding
and Mickey and Minnie Mouses wedding.
On Sunday 1st May there was a large turnout at the Village Hall BBQ Fun Day where everyone gathered to join
in the Royal Wedding Celebrations and to find out who
the weekends winners were.
The competition for Best Scarecrows was extremely close,
many scarecrows narrowly missing out winning a prize
by one vote. Two of the winning scarecrows got the same
amount of votes so instead of 3 prizes being awarded for
best scarecrows there were 4 prizes awarded.

this years trail.
To “the Boys” Nick, Adam, and Dave who gathered in all
these scarecrows at the end of the Trail on their trailer…
an adventure in itself!?!. They caused chaos around Skirlaugh on their travels.. Owners of “Where’s Wally”
couldn’t actually find him at one point as he was accidentally collected by our boys but was soon returned to
his rightful place. Parts of the scarecrows they were
meant to collect apparently were scattered around the
village by them. So if you happened to come across a

travels please accept our apologies for any trauma caused

“ROYAL WEDDING
CELEBRATIONS”
New Ellerby Methodist Church.
On the afternoon of Saturday the 30th April
2011, New Ellerby Methodist Church rang to
the sound of laughter and cheering. From 12
noon until late afternoon, members from both
the Church and Ellerby villages joined together
to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and
Kate Middleton.
There was lots of laughter and cheers throughout the whole of the afternoon.
We all sat down to a fabulous buffet, everyone
had previously agreed to bring something for
the buffet, consisting of all the party favourites,
which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
At the end of the afternoon everyone was presented with a commemorative china beaker as
a memento of the day.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big
thank you to Ellerby Parish Council and Hornsea Lions for their generous cash donations,
Colletta & Tyson Garden Centre at Woodmansey for the generous discount given and Asda
Bilton for donating the bunting. And last but not
least to all who attend.
The afternoon started with everyone arriving to
a room decorated with union jacks. Followed
by everyone, regardless of age, participating in
a number of old family favourite party games
such as standstill statues, pass the parcel,
hoopla, “bash the rat”, giant Jenga, apple bobbing, pin the crown on the princess & charades. Michele Turner
