Use these interesting facts and figures from around the world
and the world of soccer to help inspire your soccer season.
1958 SWEDEN
The World is introduced to Pele!
The 6th staging of the World Cup
was held in Sweden from June 8th
to the 29th.
From the 1958 World Cup forward
FIFA mandated the tournament alternate between Europe and the
America’s. This was due to the disappointment of the World Cup being
held in Europe on back to back occasions in 54 and 58.
Just Fontaine of France scored a
total of 13 goals in just 6 matches
during the 1958 World Cup. This
record still stands as the most goals
scored in one World Cup. He was
able to put 4 past the defending
champions West Germany.
Despite Qualifying for the World Cup
Finals, Northern Ireland nearly did
not participate. The Northern Ireland
FA originally ordered the team to
boycott games played on Sunday as
Irish Law declares this a “holy day”
when no football should be played.
The players protested the ruling
and were eventually allowed to
compete. They made the best of the
situation and reached the quarter
finals before losing to France 0-4.

For the first and only time in history
a World Cup match ended before 90
minutes. 66 minutes into the Costa
Rica vs. Guatemala match the visiting side quit ending the match at
3-1.
The attendance at a play-off match
on 17 June 1958 between Wales
and Hungary was only 2,823, due to
a boycott to show their sympathy to
the Hungarian rebellion army leader,
who had been executed one day
before the match.
The first scoreless match in World
Cup history was Brazil vs England
in Stockholm, Sweden on 11 June,
1958.
Brazil holds the record for most
World Cup wins with 5. They captured the first at the 1958 World Cup
beating the hosts Sweden 5-2. This
team included a 17 year kid named
Pele, who would soon become a
legend in the world of soccer.
