The United States’ premier rally championship is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America. The Ojibwe Forests ProRally is scheduled to air via tape-delay on the SPEED Channel Saturday, Sept. 18, at 4:30 p.m. (EDT). WHAT TO EXPECT This event seemingly squeezes out every last square inch of the space enclosed by Minnesota state lines. It’s one of the longest events of the year, with total mileage distances for competitors (and some die-hard fans!) pushing 400 miles. That said, watch for competitors to take it as easy as they can early on without giving up too much position. However, as the stages progress and the stage miles dwindle, have your cameras ready for the red-line, heart-pounding, sideways action that always comes with an SCCA ProRally Championship event! ProRally News And Notes IS THERE A PLACE IN RALLY FOR HANS? If it isn’t at the forefront of every safety discussion, it’s name inevitably always ® comes up. The Head-and-Neck-Support device (HANS ) has been a hot topic for SCCA ProRally competitors for more than a year now, and talk has become so heated that it was even thought that a rule change might be on the horizon, making the device mandatory for the ProRally Championship. SCCA Performance Rally Technical Manager Doug Robinson said that while the HANS is certainly beneficial and some suggestions might be made in the 2005 rulebook, it’s mandatory usage isn’t something SCCA competitors should necessarily expect any time soon. “It is unreasonable to expect any changes in the immediate future,” Robinson said. “Data needs to be reviewed and analyzed. We are looking at as many aspects regarding safety as we can find. We certainly include the HANS device, but are open to all other devices that have had some testing done. I don’t see any change in mandatory items for several years.” MEDIA CONTACTS: Curtis Kitchen SCCA, Inc. It didn’t take him long to turn up after that. After appearing in a Road&Track article testing rides and driving ability against hall-of-fame motorcyclist Larry Roesler, O’Sullivan is back for his second ProRally event of the year, driving a back-up Subaru Impreza WRX STi owned by fellow competitor Doug Havir. O’Sullivan did the same thing earlier this year, when he used one of Havir’s rides to place third at Oregon Trail. While it isn’t set in stone, the rumor is that Scott Putnam will co-drive for O’Sullivan as Putnam’s normal partner, Havir, is sitting out this round while waiting for some performance parts for his own CPD Racing WRX. PUTTING ON QUITE A “PRODUCTION” Mark Tabor and co-driver Kevin Poirier, it appears, aren’t happy with just going after the Production class title in 2004. Their results prove it. So far this season, the northwest duo has not only won the Production class every time they’ve been entered, but they’ve also gone a step further, edging out current Group 2 leaders Mark Brown and Ole Holter every time they’ve gone head-to-head (three times). Should the pair keep their current pace, they very easily could finish the season in second place in the Jon Woodner Cup standings. Group 5 driver Doug Shepherd has already locked things up on the driver side of things in that department, with over 100 points to his credit. Shepherd’s Mopar Dodge teammate, Pete Gladysz, is back in action after sitting out last round and leads the co-driver 2WD standings over Cindy Krolikowski, who is teamed up with husband Henry for Ojibwe. LOCAL COLLEGE TEAMS UP WITH SCCA TECH Students from Northwest Technical College will work alongside licensed scrutineers from the Sports Car Club of America to see that each car meets all safety and class compliance regulations at Ojibwe. Last year’s program earned Ojibwe Forests the highest rating available on its technical inspection. "This venue and the cooperation of the Technical College students and staff sets a new standard for the rest of the nation." said SCCA Performance Rally Technical Manager Doug Robinson. PGT’S DAVIS IN HUNT FOR CLASS LEAD While Stephen Verdier bolted out to a lead early in the Production GT standings with several strong performances in the first half of the season, veteran Bruce Davis never wavered. He continually finished high within the class ranks, earning points and remaining within striking distance. Now, with Verdier done this year because of budget concerns, consistency could pay off for Davis in the form of being the new class leader should he be able to make it through this weekend. Davis is back in his familiar Mitsubishi Eclipse after trying out a Subaru Impreza WRX last event in Maine. (Aug. 2, 2004) Irishmen Tom Lawless and co-driver Jason Gillespie picked up their first ever SCCA ProRally win after veterans Paul Choiniere and co-driver Jeff Becker were protested and subsequently penalized 10 minutes for an illegal service on the final day at the Maine Forest ProRally. FIA Group N 1. Patrick Richard - 49 2. Shane Mitchell - 18 3. Jonathan Bottoms - 15 4. Bill Bacon - 13 5. Two tied with 10. The penalty came after a protest committee heard the complaint issued by Lawless' camp and determined that Choiniere's crew performed maintenance on Choiniere's 2003 Hyundai Tiburon at a scheduled "fuel-stop only" break. The fuel-only instruction was listed in the service route books, which were created by event organizers and given to all competitors. Production GT 1. Stephan Verdier - 66 2. Bruce Davis - 61 3. After beginning as a TSD event in 1981, what coefficient did Ojibwe hold until 1986, when it became a National event? Lawless moved up from his original runner-up position to claim the victory in his 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII with an overall time of 1:32:53.0. Canadian Andrew ComriePicard slid up to second (1:33:59.1) in his 1999 Lancer Evolution IV - his highest finish in an SCCA ProRally event, and Matt Iorio earned his first spot on a ProRally podium in his 2001 Subaru Impreza WRX, finishing third (1:34:17.2). Jonathan Bottoms and co-driver Carolyn Bosley took the Group N win. Bill Bacon and co-driver Peter Watt Pete Kuncis Photo Tom Lawless flew over this yump and won his first ProRally. led for much of the rally, but after checking out of Saturday's mid-day service prior to the final three stages, the pair immediately returned for further repairs on Bacon's 2004 Impreza WRX STi. Behind Bottoms/Bosley, who finished seventh overall, Otis Dimiters and codriver Peter Monin wound up second in the class and tenth overall, almost three minutes behind the class winners. David Anton and co-driver Andrew Coombs earned third in Group N and 14th overall. Doug Shepherd dominated the Group 5 class again over the weekend in his 2004 Dodge SRT-4, this time with the help of four-time co-driving champion Joe Andreini. Shepherd finished an impressive sixth overall and blew away the class competition, finishing more than 13 minutes ahead of Group 5 runners-up Mark and Duffy Bowers, who finished 22nd overall. It was a perfect beginning to Group 2 driver Eric Burmeister's season as he broke out his 2003 Mazda Protégé for the first time this year. With co-driver Cindy Krolikowski, Burmeister posted a time of 1:42:39.9, good enough for 15th. Behind him, Robin Jones and 17-year-old co-driver Alex Kihurani wound up second in Jones' 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit, 25th overall. Greg Healey and co-driver John McLeod earned their first Production GT wins of 2004 over the weekend. Healey/McLeod turned in a time of 1:46:15.2 in his 1997 Subaru Impreza which placed the duo 19th overall. Bruce Davis came in second in PGT and 23rd overall with co-driver Jimmy answer on pg. 4 Media Time Control 3 OJIBWE FORESTS PRO RALLY Former SCCA ProRally Overall Driver Champions (John Woolf Cup) 2003 2002 2001 2000 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 1994 1993 1992 1991 1990 1989 1988 1987 1986 1985 1984 1983 1982 1981 1980 1979 1978 1977 1976 1975 1974 1973 . . . . . . . . . . . .David Higgins . . . . . . . . . . . .David Higgins . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Mark Lovell . . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Noel Lawler . . . . . . . .David Summerbell . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . . .Chad DiMarco . . . . . . . . . . .Paul Choiniere . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Rod Millen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Rod Millen . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Rod Millen . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . . . . . .Hendrik Blok . . . . . . . . . . . . .John Buffum . . . . . . . . .Gene Henderson . . . . . . . . . .Scott D. (Jan. 31, 2004) - Canadian Group N competitor Patrick Richard bided his time on Day One, started first on the road Saturday and then cruised in for the victory at Sno*Drift, Round One of the 2004 SCCA ProRally Championship. Ireland's Seamus Burke, with co-driver Charlie Bradley, held on to second place for much of Saturday before giving way to late hard-charger and fellow-Irishman Shane Mitchell. Mitchell, last year's SCCA ProRally Group N Champion, turned in the fastest times over the last three stages with co-driver Paul Donnelly in Mitchell's 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX in overtaking Burke. The weekend was a success for Burke even though he didn't win the event overall as he placed first in Open class competiton. The Open class American duo of driver Dennis Martin and co-driver Kim Demotte was solid all weekend finishing fourth, and the husband-and-wife tandem of Henry and Cindy Krolikowski gave Group N three of the top five spots with their fifth-place finish. Event Recap: Vernonia, Ore. (April 25, 2004) - Pat Richard showed Group N's Overall Championship potential at Sno*Drift with his win in January. This weekend at Oregon Trail, Round Two of the 2004 SCCA ProRally Championship Presented by Hot Wheels®, it appeared that Richard would have to settle for second as Seamus Burke was up by almost 90 seconds after 14 Special Stages and well on his way to showing the Open Class' resolve to remain the top class in the Championship. But then trouble showed itself. With just two Special Stages separating the Irish duo of Burke and co-driver Charlie Bradley from their first ProRally win of the year, Burke's 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution unexpectedly blew a head gasket and rendered the pair helpless as they went from their first potential win to their first DNF instead. Carl Jardevall, with codriver Amity Trowbridge, who briefly held the lead during the middle stages of the event, wound up second after Burke's misfortune Sunday and wound up second. Lauchlin O'Sullivan, with co-driver Jimmy Brandt, finished third despite problems with a third gear on SS15 that nearly crashed the 2001 Subaru Impreza WRX he was testing over the weekend for fellow driver Doug Havir. In the other classes, Stephen Verdier finished seventh overall in his 2002 Subaru WRX, and cagey veteran Doug Shepherd found enough tires over the weekend to claim the Group 5 title. Brooks Freehill was steady all weekend long winning Group 2, and Mark Tabor won Production as the lone entry in the class. Overall winner: Richard/Richard Open - O’Sullivan/Brandt Group N - Richard/Richard Group 5 - Shepherd/Gladysz Group 2 - Freehill/Elliot Production GT - Verdier/Walker Production - Tabor/Poirier DNF: Plsek/Burmeister; Havas/Kean; Jankowski/Krolikowski; Iorio/Ho; Kosmides/Becker; Nelson/Beavis; Havir/Putnam; Olson/Jones; Gubelmann/Pace; Korpal/Schleicher; Streets/Beckwith; Burke/Bradley; Malik/Trowbridge. Event Recap: Leon Styles pleaded with his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII to hang on. From Seamus Burke's early break Sunday during the first Super Special of the day all the way to the next-to-last stage, Styles, who had never led a ProRally for any length of time in his career, found himself in the top spot and stayed there for most of Sunday afternoon before his car dealt a final blow as a hose came loose. Styles repositioned the hose and finished first in the Open class, but in second position overall as Group N driver Pat Richard, in his Subaru Impreza WRX, came storming back from more than two minutes down, despite his own problems, to win by 40 seconds and claim his third straight victory. Ramana Lagemann grabbed his first podium finish of the year winding up third. Travis Pastrana and co-driver Christian Edstrom finished fourth, while Stephan Verdier, with co-driver Allan Walker, was impressive for the second event in a row, driving away from a very-competitive Production GT class and earning his first top-five finish and second straight PGT win. Doug Shepherd, with co-driver Pete Gladysz overcame a seven-minute deficit to win Group 5 for the third time this year, and Craig Hollingsworth, with co-driver Jason Grahn, captured his first Group 2 win of the season. Mark Tabor, with codriver Kevin Poirier, snared his second Production win 2004. Overall winner: Richard/Richard Open - Styles/Dillon Group N - Richard/Richard Group 5 - Shepherd/Gladysz Group 2 - Hollingsworth/Grahn Production GT - Verdier/Walker Production - Tabor/Poirier MEDIA TIME CONTROL DNF: Drislane/Burke; Dimiters/Monin; Shepherd/Gladysz; Lilly/Farrell; Nash/Fries; Birbilis/Vicente; Iorio/Ho; Bottoms/Bosley; Sprongl/Sprongl; C a s s i d y / G e t c h e l l ; Wiktroczyk/McAllister; Moro/Smith; Hawkins/Wintle; Penasack/Rowland; Egan/Donnelly; Wesley/Ehrenberg; Cienkosz/Cienkosz; Utecht/Secor. Event Recap: New co-driver? No problem. First time back in three events? No sweat. That’s how Irishman Shane Mitchell handled the weekend en route to his first ever SCCA ProRally victory as he simply avoided the attrition and penalty points that handcuffed most of the Suquehannock Trail ProRally field. “The plan was to come here and go for it,” Mitchell said. “But then [Frank] Sprongl came along with an open class car and we were a bit afraid of that. Then Sprongl went away and when we saw him off, we knew we were going to get it one way or another.” Thomas Lawless, with co-driver Jason Gillespie, finished second in his 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with a time of 2:04:16.9, about two-and-a-half minutes behind Mitchell’s 2:01:31.0. Paul Choiniere gave co-driver Cindy Krolikowski her first-ever podium finish as he masterfully controlled the Group 5 Team Mopar Dodge 2004 Dodge SRT-4 for the first time and finished third. Just one car finished in each the Group 5 (Choiniere), Group 2 (Brian Houart, with co-driver Eric Heitkamp) and Production GT (Michael Madden, with co-driver Martin O’Flynn) classes. In all, more cars were consumed by the rain-soaked clay roads (18), than finished the rally (17). STPR will be shown via tape delay on Speed Channel at 4 p.m., Saturday, July 17. Event Recap: The SCCA ProRally field had just come down from its first morning run, and crews were setting up for their mid-day service. That’s when all hail broke loose. A summer thunderstorm rolled over the top of Pikes Peak and dumped heavy rain, hail and several inches of snow at the summit, forcing a lengthy delay in the event and a cancellation of the fifth stage. Leon Styles and co-driver John Dillon, upon hearing the cancellation, celebrated next to Styles’ Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII as they claimed their first-ever SCCA ProRally Championship Presented by Hot Wheels® victory. The duo beat out second-place finishers Pat and Nathalie Richard. Andrew Barnes, with co-driver Ieuan Thomas, finished third in a Hyundai Tiburon. Richard finished first and extended his lead in the FIA Group N class, with the husband-and-wife tandem of Masayuki and Takako Akaba finished second in Group N and 10th overall. Mopar/Dodge drivers Doug Shepherd and Paul Choiniere waged a second-straight classic battle in Group 5, with Choiniere getting the class win. Stephan Verdier added another Group 5 win to his season total, topping Todd Moberly. Mark Brown came in 20th overall, taking the G2 class win, and Mark Tabor has all but wrapped up the Roy Donison Cup after his Production class win this weekend. Lawless moved up from his original runner-up position to claim the victory. Canadian Andrew Comrie-Picard slid up to second and Matt Iorio earned his first spot on a ProRally podium finishing third. Jonathan Bottoms and co-driver Carolyn Bosley took the Group N win. Bill Bacon and co-driver Peter Watt led for much of the rally, but after checking out of Saturday's mid-day service prior to the final three stages, the pair immediately returned for further repairs on Bacon's 2004 Impreza WRX STi. Behind Bottoms/Bosley, Otis Dimiters and co-driver Peter Monin wound up second in the class, while David Anton and co-driver Andrew Coombs earned third. Doug Shepherd dominated the Group 5 class again, this time with the help of fourtime co-driving champion Joe Andreini. Shepherd/Andreini finished more than 13 minutes ahead of runners-up Mark and Duffy Bowers. It was a perfect beginning to Group 2 driver Eric Burmeister's season as he won in his first event of 2004 with Cindy Krolikowski, and Greg Healey, with John McLeod, got his first PGT win also. Jeff Field, with Mike Hordjik ran a very respectable rally while taking the Production class win. The following information has been devised in order to assist media members in their coverage of Performance Rally either at or away from the event. OBTAINING CREDENTIALS - Members of the media who wish to cover Performance Rally in person must request credentials from the SCCA National Office. The Communications Department, in cooperation with local rally organizers, will consider each credential request. A letter must be submitted on company letterhead by the sports editor or managing editor for print media, or sports director or station manager/producer for electronic media. The letter must contain the media member's name (who wishes to cover the event) and what the actual assignment is. Requests must be received by the SCCA National Office Communications Department no later than one (1) week prior to the event. Any persons requesting credentials later than this WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ACCESS TO RESTRICTED AREAS. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! ANNUAL PHOTOGRAPHED CREDENTIAL "HARD CARD" ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS - Annual Photo Credentials, or "Hard Cards", are available to members of the media who frequently cover the SCCA ProRally Championship and are designed so that media members who hold the credential only have to sign a waiver one time and are granted on-stage, unrestricted access for the entire Championship year. In order to be considered for an annual Photo Credential, all of the aforementioned qualifications must be met in addition to attending a minimum of five (5) SCCA ProRally Championship events in one season. Photo Hard Cards are only good for a singular Championship season only. A new application must be submitted each season. The same photo may be used for the new credential, but a new application must be turned in. To secure an annual Photo Credential application and official waiver, media members should contact Curtis Kitchen, Public Relations Manager, in the SCCA Communications Department at (785) 357-7222 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (CST/CDT). To submit a fully-completed application and waiver, send documents to: SCCA c/o Curtis Kitchen P.O. Box 19400 Topeka, KS 66619 Once the application has been received and approved, the media member does not need to sign a waiver at each event for the remainder of the season that the credential is valid for. However, if the Photo Credential holder is eligible for an on-stage vest, he or she must still sign up for and receive the vest during media registration prior to each event. The vest must be returned upon completion of the event. If the vest is not returned, the signee will be assessed the cost of replacement. There are three levels of access for media and VIPs: a) Media - On-Stage Unrestricted Access; b) Media - Restricted Access; c) VIP - Restricted Access. MEDIA - ON STAGE UNRESTRICTED ACCESS FAILURE TO COMPLY with any of the following may mean immediate expulsion from the event and may inhibit further credentials from being issued to that media member. No persons under the age of 18 are eligible for on-stage press credentials. The media member must be on assignment. No freelance photographers or journalists (print or electronic) will be considered for on-stage access. Photographers are allowed to request credentials for a maximum of one (1) assistant (see above for credentialing procedures) on-stage. Persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to serve as assistants. Members of the media who have been granted unrestricted access, but who are not "Hard Card" holders, must sign a waiver during registration periods before each event. Times of registration will differ with each rally. Credentials will be issued at the time the waiver is signed. PHOTO IDENTIFICATION IS REQUIRED WITH PICKUP OF ALL TYPES OF CREDENTIALS. A vest, granting on-stage access to restricted areas, will be issued at time of registration and MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHILE THE MEDIA MEMBER IS ON STAGE. The vest is required to be returned upon completion of the rally and is solely the responsibility of the media member to return it. If the vest is not returned, the media member will be charged the cost of the vest. NOTE: Vests will be given only to those media whose job performance might be compromised if not allowed access to restricted areas on stage. While on stage, the media are allowed unrestricted access to all locations. However, if a Marshall or any other event staff determines the media's area selection as too dangerous, the media are required to move to another lower-risk location. In summary, the media member must have both an approved credential AND a vest to be allowed into the restricted (non-spectator) portions of the stage. Further, media are allowed unrestricted access unless an event worker (e.g. marshall, safety control, etc…) asks them to move away from a location. MEDIA - RESTRICTED ACCESS For members of the media who meet the previously outlined conditions and wish to cover the event but do not request credentials before the one-week deadline, a pass may still be obtained at the event. This pass will allow for access to the parc exposes, pre and post rally gatherings, service areas, competitors (for interviews, etc…). However, ON-STAGE ACCESS WILL BE LIMITED TO SPECTATOR AREAS ONLY. No vest is required for this pass. VIP RESTRICTED ACCESS - VIP requests should be handled through an official representative of the organization, business, group, etc… of which the VIP is a part. This pass will allow for access to the parc exposes, pre and post rally gatherings, service areas, competitors (for interviews, etc…). However, ON-STAGE ACCESS WILL BE LIMITED TO SPECTATOR AREAS ONLY unless prior plans have been submitted to and approved by an SCCA National Office official. Credentials should be requested no later than one week prior to the scheduled event date and can be requested by calling Curtis Kitchen, SCCA, Inc., Public Relations Manager, at (785) 357-7222, fax on official letterhead - FAX: (785) 232-7228 - or mail to the address listed above. MEDIA/VIP PARKING AT EVENTS - Some rallies have a media area for parking at staging areas and most local organizers will provide parking passes for media members for those designated areas. However, this does not guarantee a parking spot. Availability of these areas is contingent upon the number of press in attendance, available space, etc. Further, some parking areas may not be close to the actual spectator areas or other viable viewing points.
