Operations Security (OPSEC) Information Sheet
As of 30 Mar 2015
Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members are encouraged to exercise care when posting information on social
media sites. Information which may identify home addresses, travel plans, and bank/credit card account
numbers should not be posted on these sites. Leaders are encouraged to promote OPSEC across the
Greater Fort Hood community to protect Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members. A few OPSEC tips are
listed below:
 Always protect your devices (phones, laptops, tablets) with a pin / password. Change passwords
biannually using the AKO method and download virus protection. There’s an app for that!
 Download and use the Facebook Security Settings Guide at https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebooksecurity/ownyourspace-a-guide-to-facebook-security/10150261846610766
 If you shop / bank from your phone, always use that company’s app, not the web browser. Read app
permissions before you download (some apps want to imbed geotags).
 Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use. Machines running on Wi-Fi can be hacked (this includes
game consoles and televisions).
 Avoid playing games on Facebook and ensure game apps are from trusted U.S. companies (games/apps
can be used to hack stored information such as bank account or geotags).
 Avoid using stickers that show military affiliations (remove ERB / ORB off windows) and using stick figure
decals on windshields, especially those with a parent in uniform.
 Do not throw away personally identifiable information (PII) or material marked For Official Use Only.
These items should also be encrypted when emailing. Opt out of pre-approved credit cards offers that
may be intercepted by nefarious characters by calling
1-888-5-OPTOUT. Do not throw these away!
 Avoid phishing attempts. Do not open emails from people you do not know. Watch for misspelling or
grammar errors in emails. Do not click on suspicious links or provide PII (social security numbers,
birthdates) to companies requesting information through email. Banks and credit card companies do not
ask for PII over email.
 Remember if you see something...say something. Report all suspicious activity on
Fort Hood to (254) 288-COPS or 911

Army Emergency Relief (AER)
Did You Know…
…The Army’s Annual AER Campaign, conducted each Spring remains distinct from the
Combined Federal Campaign for an important reason? The Combined Federal Campaign
charges all organizations under its campaign umbrella an administrative fee of more than 10% of
their total collection. Other reasons: The two-fold purpose of not only collecting funds for AER,
but also educating Soldiers and Families on the assistance that AER can provide. The strong
selling point that the Army takes care of its own.
… Living beyond your means is a prescription for disaster?
Does more than 25% of your take-home pay go to paying bills? Are you making only minimum
payments on bills due? Are you taking out new loans to pay off old ones? Are you missing
payments? Are you stalling one creditor to pay another? Are you having frequent family
arguments over money? Do you really need that new TV, fancy watch or extra cup of fancy
coffee? Financial counseling is available through your local ACS office.
… Army Emergency Relief has its own APP for smart phones? The APP contains
information about AER assistance and scholarships, as well as explaining the assistance
process…and where to go to get assistance. The APP is available for both iPhones and Android
phones.

Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) Issue Submission
AFAP is the process in which we, the Army Family, have the opportunity to tell our leadership what is
working well in the Army, what isn't, and what we think will fix the issue. By submitting your issues to
AFAP, you shed light on the concerns you have with the quality of life within the Army and give leadership
your ideas on how to resolve those issues.
AFAP issues can be submitted to any AFAP Issue Submission box (located at various locations on post);
at Lane Volunteer Center; Army Community Service; Oveta Culp Hobby Soldier & Family Readiness
Center; faxed to (254) 288-3650, emailed to [email protected], or
submitted online through www.myarmyonesource.com (AFAP Issue Management System).
For additional information call the Fort Hood AFAP office at (254) 287-AFAP (2327) or (254) 286-6600.

 Ride 2 Recovery is produced by the Fitness Challenge, a (501C3) in partnership with the Military and VA
Volunteer Service Office to benefit mental and physical rehabilitation programs for our country's wounded
veterans and healing heroes that features cycling as the core activity. To improve the health and wellness of
healing heroes worldwide by providing a life changing experience that can impact their lives forever. Ride 2
Recovery supports Spinning Recovery Labs and outdoor cycling programs at Military and VA locations around the
U.S. to help injured veterans overcome obstacles they face.
 Cycling is an important part of the recovery and rehabilitation program for two reasons: 1.) Cycling is an activity
that almost all patients with mental and physical disabilities can participate. 2.) Participation in the Ride 2
Recovery Program helps speed up the recovery and rehabilitation process.
 Ride 2 Recovery provides program events and site locations and designs and builds specially adapted bikes to
suit injured veterans needs making it possible for almost any warrior to participate in the program, including quad
amputees.
 This year's challenge begins in Houston and ends seven days later in Arlington, TX.
 Ride 2 Recovery will also make a special stop at Fort Hood on April 22
 Come out and help recognize and send-off Fort Hood Soldiers who are participating in the ride this year!

Parent Participation Program
 Parent participation is highly encouraged in all CYSS programs, as Families are an integral part of CYSS success
and a key component in overall program quality
 The goal of the new, Army-wide CYSS Parent Participation Program is to ensure consistency across all CYSS by:
cataloging meaningful participation opportunities, standardizing the point system based on participation
opportunities, standardizing the points required for fee reductions and standardizing the process to apply fee
reduction to monthly payments
 The established common criteria should ensure that Families understand that their participation is valued and
needed and truly contributes enhancing the sense of community
 Parents may earn a fee reduction for volunteering a minimum of 10 hours generally in their child’s program or on
behalf of CYSS
 Participation Points may be accumulated from month to month until the Parent earns 10 points, to receive a 10%
reduction on one month’s fee for one child


If a parent has earned 20 points, then the 10% fee reduction may be applied for one child over a 2-month period
or used for two separate children during the same month

Military Extension Internship Program
 Designed for college students and recent college graduates, this program provides a unique opportunity to gain
practical work experience in child development plus school-age and youth programs
 Interns will live and work on military installations around the globe for 10 weeks to 6 months
 The range of experience is broad, including working directly with children and youth, implementing programs that
address their needs and learning to manage child and youth centers
 Check out all of the opportunities at www.ydae.purdue.edu/military
 The Department of Defense provides high-quality, accredited childcare and school-age/teen programs at all of
their facilities
 Interns also have the support of the U.S. Cooperative Extension System and its 4-H Youth Development Program
 4-H focuses on building better citizens and promotes understanding of social issues and how they can be
addressed to strengthen communities
 Cooperative Extension features strong networks and connections in the communities where you’ll work as well as
faculty and staff with specific expertise in childcare and youth development
 The most qualified applicants will: have completed at least two years of college by the start of their internship;
have a GPA of at least 2.75; have an educational background in child or youth development, education, Family
science, or a related field; be able to pass a National Agency background (security) check; exhibit maturity and
good judgment; and enjoy working with children, youth and their Families
 Applications from undergraduates, graduate students, recent graduates and students are welcome as well
 At a minimum, interns will receive an hourly wage or a living stipend
 Interns will also be treated to an orientation conference before the start of internships, which provides a great
chance to meet other interns and begin to learn about military children, youth and Families
 Although any tuition or fees required by your institution will be the intern’s personal responsibility, alternative
arrangements with the program and university may be available to ensure an applicant’s experience qualifies for
academic credit
 Applicants must be sure to provide the specific internship credit requirements for their program of choice
 Consider some of the options: Child and Youth Training Specialist, School Liaison Officer and Child and Youth
Facilities Center Director

Application and recommendation forms, as well as deadlines for upcoming sessions are available online at
