American Experience:
Berlin Lift
Friday, Feb 9th • 8pm
It was the largest humanitarian campaign the world
had ever seen. Western superpowers came together to
feed the city of Berlin.
Dr. Percy Julian, of the research
department at the Glidden Paint and
Varnish Company, shown in his office
in Chicago, Illinois, July 25, 1947
NOVA:
Forgotten Genius
Thursday, Feb 22nd • 8pm
His house was firebombed. A
scandalous affair got him fired in the
middle of the Depression. The doors of
academia were slammed in his face, since
no one expected an African American to
rise higher than teaching high school.
Yet Percy Julian overcame every obstacle
to become a world-class scientist, a selfmade millionaire, and a civil rights
pioneer. NOVA presents his dramatic
life story in a two-hour “Lives in
Science” biography.
On June 24, 1948, the Cold War began in the wartorn, divided city of Berlin. The Soviets, who
controlled all of East Germany and the eastern half of
Berlin, blocked all access to the American- and Britishcontrolled West Berlin, choking commerce and
starving the people. The Soviet goal was to expel the
Allied forces, who had long been a thorn in Stalin’s
side. But Western forces refused to abandon the city.
President Truman proclaimed, “We stay in Berlin.
Period.” To do so would mean attempting the
impossible: supplying two million civilians and 20,000
Allied soldiers with food and fuel — entirely from the
air.
Soundstage: Train
Saturday, Feb 10th • 10pm
San Francisco’s Train is one of the most successful bands
stemming from the late 90s, having sold millions of
records and producing solid hit after hit with each album
it releases. Singer Patrick Monahan, singer/guitarist Rob
Hotchkiss, guitarist Jim Stafford, bassist Charlie Colin
and drummer Scott Underwood know how to craft
thoughtful ballads to anthemic rock n’ roll – fans and
radio cannot get enough of them. SOUNDSTAGE
welcomes the group, who delivers a rousing performance
packed with sing-along choruses and hook-filled
melodies.

Sweetwater Rescue: The Willie
and Martin Handcart Story
Friday, Feb 2nd • 8pm
A documentary describing the
travails of 1,200 stranded
emigrants and their rescuers.
From 1856 to 1860, ten groups of
handcart pioneers traveled to the
Salt Lake Valley — the place they
considered Zion. Eight successfully
crossed the plains from Iowa to the Salt Lake Valley. But two — the
Willie and Martin companies — met with a wintry disaster in October
1856. They found themselves stranded on the high plains of Wyoming
in treacherous snowstorms. Those who traveled from the Salt Lake Valley
to rescue the pioneers faced the same horrific snows.
As many as 200 of the emigrants from Great Britain and Europe
traveling in these companies were buried in shallow graves, but more
than 1,000 of them lived — and told their story. This year marks the
sesquicentennial of their fateful journey. In commemoration of their
sacrifice, documentary filmmaker Lee Groberg, author Heidi Swinton and
hundreds more joined in a nearly two-year project to create

With her Midwestern charm, girl-next-door persona
and “keep it simple” ethic, Katie Brown
demonstrates how to make a house a home in her
new series, KATIE BROWN WORKSHOP.
Everyday life at home is a joyous adventure for
Katie, whether she is planning and cooking for a
dinner party, working in her garden, redecorating a
room or meeting the daily needs of a young family.
Her imaginative and budget-conscious approach to
the home arts has been a breath of fresh air for a
new generation of homemakers, earning her praise
from People Magazine as “TV’s meat-and-potatoes
Martha Stewart.” From her real-life workshop,
Katie uses seasonal foods and colors to prepare
simple and enjoyable meals, demystify flower
arranging and transform holiday decorations into
works of art.

Tuesday, Feb 20th • 9:30am, pt 2
Program repeats during the month.
In the third and final hour of ANTIQUES ROADSHOW from Honolulu, Hawaii,
appraiser David Bonsey of Skinner plucks the owner of this antique violin out of the
crowd. The violin and bow were
passed down to the owner by her
great-aunt — a professional violinist
who purchased the instrument in
1921. According to accompanying
documentation, the violin is a rare
Camilli, made in 1737 in Mantua, Italy.
Upon further inspection, however,
Bonsey reveals that it’s a fine forgery.
Despite this sour note, the violin and
bow as a pair could still make
beautiful music together with an
auction estimate of $12,000.

Masterpiece
Theatre: The
Sally Lockhart
Mysteries, Ruby
in the Smoke
Austin City Limits:
Lyle Lovett and Jamie
Cullum
Saturday, Feb 10th • 9pm
Monday, Feb 12th • 8pm
Scrappy teen
Sally Lockhart
(Billie Piper,
“Doctor
Who”) has a
mind for
numbers and
for sleuthing.
In Phillip
Pullman’s
quartet of
novels, she is
put through
the paces of Victorian melodrama
and mystery. In this vivid adaptation of
the first book in the quartet, The Ruby in
the Smoke, orphan Sally Lockhart, armed
with a pearl handled pistol and her keen
mind, uncovers the secrets of her father’s
death, discovers hidden cursed jewels
and faces England’s deadliest villains
with bold courage. Sally’s friends, the
street-smart Jim and the besotted
Frederick, help her expose the truth —
no matter how dangerous. Sally
navigates through the constantly twisting
plots with the savvy dexterity
of a sharp-eyed detective.
Multiple music genres fuse as crooner Lyle Lovett
and pianist Jamie Cullum perform on AUSTIN
CITY LIMITS. Singer-songwriter Lovett has long
mixed elements of jazz, blues and pop into his
unique country sound. Cullum, a 24-year-old from
England, is working to change contemporary jazz
music in the States by infusing the genre with rock
and dance sounds.
Austin City Limits:
Jack Johnson and Rilo Kiley
Saturday, Feb 24th • 9pm
Former surfer Jack Johnson has long
been a hit at summer music festivals with
his mix of folk, blues and hip-hop. He
performs songs from his newest CD, In
Between Dreams. Rilo Kiley fuses indie-pop
and alt-country for a sound that
emphasizes their emotional, playful lyrics.
Highlights include songs from the band’s
newest CD, More Adventurous.

Mental Engineering
Fridays • 12:30am
Mental Engineering is a weekly roundtable
discussion about TV commercials and our
commercial culture. It airs exclusively on public
television.
The Short List
Saturdays • 11pm
The 13-part, half-hour series will feature
47 outstanding short films from 18
countries. The Short List — still the
only weekly series of its kind in the
world — is credited with bringing the
art of short film to U.S. series
television. In addition to four
Southwest Emmy Awards, The Short
List has received commendation from
the U.S. State Department for its world
view and from the Arts and Culture
Division of the European Union for
promoting awareness of the film arts in
cultures around the globe.

Passage: Ice
Survivors
Thursday, Feb 8th • 8pm
After the Franklin expedition, more
than a half-century would pass before
an innovative explorer finally conquered
the Northwest Passage. Unsupported
by naval might or government funding,
a 29-year-old Norwegian, Roald
Amundsen, set out with improbably
slim resources: six men and a tiny,
shallow vessel, the Gjoa, which he
presumed could slip through channels
that endangered larger ships. Caught by
the winter ice, Amundsen did what the
earlier Franklin crew had been unable or
Each week host John Forde is joined by four
smart, fun panelists. The conversation usually
begins with the way the commercial uses the
mechanisms of social psychology, then wanders
through history, technology, sex roles, spirituality
and humor.
Mental Engineering is alternately funny and
meaningful. The show is neither pro-consumer
nor anti-consumption. The goal is to get the
viewer to transcend consumerism and think of
themselves as citizens and even spiritual beings.
As the only media literacy series to reach a
national audience, Mental Engineering teaches
by using the most vivid and pervasive examples
of our modern culture, TV commercials. By
modeling the art of asking good questions, the
show gives viewers the tools to own themselves.
unwilling to do: he turned to the native Inuit to learn
their ancient skills of Arctic survival. What they taught
him — seal hunting, building igloos and handling dog
teams — not only ensured the success of his voyage, but
was crucial training for his conquest of the South Pole in
1912.

Doctor Who:Terror of the Zygons
Begins Feb 10th • 7pm
The Doctor : [To Broton] “You can’t rule the
world in hiding. You’ve got to come out on to
the balcony sometimes and wave a tentacle.”
The Doctor, Sarah and Harry return to Earth in
response to the Brigadier’s summons. UNIT are
investigating a series of attacks on North Sea oil
rigs and have set up a temporary HQ in the Scottish
village of Tullock. The attacks are the work of a
huge cyborg, the Skarasen, controlled by a group of
aliens called Zygons whose spaceship lies at the
bottom of Loch Ness.
The Zygons plan to take over the Earth as a
substitute for their own planet, which has been
devastated by solar flares. They are using their
shape-shifting abilities to take on the identities of
locals whose inert bodies are held aboard their ship.

Letter from the General Manager
It’s a rare and special person who sees something that appears to be
free, yet appreciates its value and is willing to pay for it.
Debbie Emond
That person is you. You are special, because your support allows
KBTC to broadcast intelligent, uninterrupted programming
throughout Western Washington. Thank you for sharing our
dedication to the quality of life in our community.
For example, the popularity of Masterpiece Theatre has demonstrated that there
is a place in American television for acting and writing of the highest caliber…that there can be
more power in a glance than in an explosion…that there is an audience for excellence. This
month I hope you’ll enjoy Masterpiece Theatre’s presentation of Dracula. Transylvania’s
most famous undead resident bares his fangs in a chilling new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s
1897 horror classic.
We also have plenty of programs on the lighter side such as Antique Roadshow
that says “Aloha!” to its 2007 season with a voyage to sunny Honolulu, Hawaii. Host Mark L.
Walberg and appraiser Nancy Druckman of Sotheby’s explore the longstanding tradition of
Hawaiian quilting by visiting the stunning collection at the Queen Emma Summer Palace and
sitting in on a quilting class at the Iolani Palace.
In addition, multiple music genres fuse as crooner Lyle Lovett and pianist Jamie
Cullum perform on Austin City Limits. Singer-songwriter Lovett has long mixed elements
of jazz, blues and pop into his unique country sound. Cullum, a 24-year-old from England,
is working to change contemporary jazz music in the states by infusing the genre with rock
and dance sounds.
I hope you’ll stay tuned in 2007. We’ll satisfy your curiosity. We’ll keep you
entertained. We will fulfill your desire for lifelong learning. Thank you for supporting KBTC,
your public television station.
Sincerely,
Debbie Emond

Northwest Bell and
continued their work in the
communications field long after their years at the phone company. As a proud WWII
veteran, Richard was able to support the next generation of military personnel as a
distinguished participant in the MARS program, relaying calls from service men in
Vietnam to their families back home.
He was an expert at Morse Code and a passionate HAM radio operator, connecting and
making friends with people all over the world. Both Richard and Beverly dedicated much
of their retirement to preserving vintage communications equipment and memorabilia at
the Museum of Communications in Seattle.
The two also enjoyed public television, partly because of Beverly’s English heritage.
Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery were among their favorites and they often taped them to
watch again and again. Just as Richard and Beverly gave back to the community during
their lives, they also ensured that the programs they enjoyed on KBTC will be around for
their friends and family by generously remembering KBTC in their estate.
