We’re a 4-Star Facility! pg. 1
Administrator’s Letter
by Beth Totheroh
Many families find it stressful to visit their loved ones
in long-term care, especially if dementia has changed
their usual ways of relating. Here are some ways to
make the most of your visits:
1. Help the room feel like home by bringing photos
and bedspreads, creating an environment that feels
more comfortable and familiar to your loved one.
2. Turn off the television or radio and close the door
during your time together. When the room is quiet
and free of distractions, it’s easier for someone with
dementia (and for those with hearing loss) to focus.
3. Try to converse at the same height. Bring in small
folding chairs and stash them in a corner if you tend
to have lots of visitors.
4. Use memory aides such as photos and magazines
of beloved hobbies as conversation starters. Creating a
memory book together can be beneficial.
5. Go with the flow of the conversation, allowing
your loved one to talk about what’s on their mind,
rather than asking questions they used to be able to
answer but no longer can, which is upsetting.
6.Talk to staff members. They can become your allies,
supporters, and teammates in care.

Good news, everyone! Heritage Health Hoopeston
is now a four-star rated facility, from the Medicare
Nursing Home Compare system. Nursing homes are
measured on a one to five scale. Heritage Health has
been gradually increasing their star rating and has recently jumped up to the four-star level. Great job to
the staff who continually focus on improving quality
and resident satisfaction!
Heritage Health is also proud to partner with Carle
Hoopeston Regional Health Center for medical support. Carle-HRHC has recently made changes to the
Provider group who supports the area nursing facilities
including, Heritage Health Hoopeston. Beginning in
August, we will have additional providers providing
medical visits to our residents and covering after hour
needs. Joining Dr. Bill McCarthy will be Advanced
Nurse Practitioners: Pam Armstrong, Connie Catron,
Susan Hanson, and joining in October will be Steve
Stammer. We are excited to welcome these medical
professionals to help us support the needs of our residents and look forward to their partnership!

“Nobody wants to be in a nursing home, but if you have to be in one,
Heritage Health is where you’d want to be. The people who work there
are awesome. Starting at the entrance, the staff is so kind and helpful, and
this carries through to every department. The kindness and compassion
that was shown to Sandy and me and the rest of my family was so comforting.
Special thanks to the nurses and C.N.A.s for the wonderful care given to
Sandy. Nurses, if any of you ever have one of “those days” when you think
nobody appreciates what you do, just think of me and my family... because
we surely do appreciate you and your efforts. With love and appreciation,
The Bill McNeely and family”
