Meet the Head Coach
KANUTE DRUGAN
Head Coach
86-32-6 (.718)
Seventh Season
Entering his seventh year as head
coach, Kanute Drugan will attempt to
lead the Spartans to their sixth NIIC
Conference Championship in the past
eight years. AU won conference championships in
1996,1997,1999, 2000, and 2002.
As Aurora’s head coach for women’s soccer, Drugan’s
record is 86-32-6 (.718) and includes two NCAA national
tournament appearances, four NIIC conference
championships, three Coach-of-the-Year awards, one
NCAA All-American player (Second Team), four NCAA AllRegion players, two NCAA Academic All-Region players,
and 38 NIIC All-Conference players.
With 86 career wins, Drugan is AU’s all-time victory
leader for soccer. Former AU men’s soccer coach Rick Kilps
(1977-1983) is next with a 55-36-8 (.596) record in seven
seasons at Aurora. Drugan is the only coach to lead an AU
soccer team or an NIIC women’s soccer team to the NCAA
tournament.
Drugan has an extensive background coaching in the
Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), Northern Illinois Soccer
League (NISL), and the Illinois Women’s Soccer League
(IWSL). Now in his 17th season as a head soccer coach,
Drugan has a composite record of 136-84-24 (.607).
In basketball, Drugan is entering his eighth season with
Aurora University’s men’s basketball team as Associate
Head Coach. Over 16 seasons, Drugan compiled a career
record as head coach of 282-156 (.644). Drugan led both
Mens’ and Womens’ teams to AAU national and regional
championships, and to three Illinois Final Four
appearances (finishing second, third, and fourth). For two
consecutive seasons, Drugan’s junior varsity teams went
undefeated in conference play.
Drugan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and
government from Ohio University in 1977. He graduated
cum laude. Prior to attending OU, Drugan attended Walsh
University. As a prep in Ohio, Drugan was a four-sport
athlete.

TONI MALLEY
Assistant Coach
Third Season
Toni Malley made the transition to AU's
coaching staff from her previous
capacity at AU as a defensive center
midfielder for the Spartans women’s
soccer team. As a Spartan, she played
on back-to-back NIIC Conference
Championship teams in 1996 and 1997. As a member of the
AU coaching staff, Malley has now coached at both of her
Alma Maters, Aurora University and Geneva High School.
In 1995, her senior year at Geneva High School, Malley
was named female “Athlete-of-the-Year.” In 1999, after
graduating from Aurora University with a bachelor’s degree
in sports medicine, Malley was named junior varsity head
coach for Geneva’s girls’ soccer team. That fall (’99), she
became a grad assistant at Tennessee Tech University. After
two seasons at Tennessee Tech, Malley returned to the
Spartans.
In her first two campaigns on the AU coaching staff,
Malley helped lead the Spartans to back-to-back NCAA
tournament berths. Now in her third season as an assistant
coach, Toni is also the junior varsity head coach at AU.
JOSHA KRUEGER
Assistant Coach
First Season
During Josha Krueger’s four years as a
player on the St. Charles HS varsity soccer
team, she was twice First-Team AllConference, won two state championships, was co-captain and an All-State
selection her senior year.
She graduated from UW-Milwaukee in 1997 where she
was on the MCC All-Conference team for four consecutive
years, NCAA All-Region her junior and senior year, and a cocaptain her junior and senior year. In honor of her splendid
career, UW-Milwaukee retired her uniform in 2001.
From 1995 through 2001, Krueger played professionally in
the Women’s United Soccer League (First Division) for the
Chicago Cobras and the Boston Renegades. Playing with
the Cobras in 2000 and with the Renegades in 2001,
Krueger’s teams won back-to-back National
Championships. Krueger’s performance in the 2001 season
was recognized by the league with a prestigious post-season
honor naming her the league's Defender-of-the-Year.
For the past four years, Krueger has been coaching and
training Chicago area premier-level soccer clubs such as the
Chicago Sockers, the Chicago Alliance, and Nicholas
Berbari’s Total Soccer Academy.

TIFFANY DISHER
Assistant Coach
First Season
Tiffany Disher makes the transition
from the Spartan playing field as a fouryear member of the NIIC AllConference team to the Spartan
sidelines as a first-year graduate
assistant coach. Disher completed a
stellar career with 35 assists ranking her second all-time for
the Spartans in assists. Her 27 career goals scored ranks
Disher eighth all-time for the Spartans. Disher also holds
the school record for matches played in a career (86).
During her career, the Spartans won three NIIC Conference
Championships and earned two NCAA National
Championship tournament bids.
A graduate of East Alton-Wood River High School, Disher
was a four-year letter-winner. She garnered All-Area honors
all four years and was twice named to the All-Conference
team. As a junior and senior, she led her team in goals and
assists and was selected to the All-Sectional team both
years. Disher helped her high school team to four
consecutive conference championships.
CHERYL BLOCK
Assistant Coach
First Season
Cheryl Block gained her collegiate
playing experience as a center midfielder
and sweeper for Wartburg College.
Named captain for the 1990-1991
seasons, Block also received the team’s
post-season honor of Most Valuable Player.
At Rich South High School Block lettered in four varsity
sports: soccer (3 years), volleyball (4 years), basketball (4
years), and track (1 year). As a middle hitter and captain of
her volleyball team, Block earned All-Area, All-Conference,
and All-State honors in her senior year and helped guide
them to Conference and Regional Championships. As a
captain and forward on the basketball team her senior year,
she also helped that team to a Conference Championship
In soccer, Block was selected the team’s captain during
her sophomore, junior, and senior years. In all three of
those years she also received the team’s post-season honor
of MVP. As a senior, Block led her team to the SICA
Conference Championship and was selected to the SICA
All-Conference team.
Block earned an unusual distinction at Rich South High
School. Not only was she Female Athlete-of-the-Year her
senior year, but she also received that honor in her
freshman, sophomore, and junior years as well.

RAISE THE BAR!
“Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat;
long is the road thereto, and rough and steep at first;
but, when the heights are reached, then there is ease,
though grievously hard in the winning.”
- Hesiod, Works and Days
Back-to-back NCAA National Championship tournament
appearances, five of the past seven NIIC Conference
Championships, a 25 game unbeaten streak in NIIC
conference play on the line, and still the Spartans are not
satisfied with that track record. After completing a 19-3
season (good enough for ninth in the nation in the final
NCAA rankings last season), the AU women’s soccer team
wants to accomplish more, much more, before they will say
they are satisfied.
This is the tenth season for the women’s soccer program
at Aurora University. With an overall nine-year record of
112-48-9 (.689), the Spartans have enjoyed eight consecutive
winning seasons, five NIIC Conference Championships, and
two NCAA tournament appearances. In the first nine years,
AU has produced one All-American, two Academic AllAmericans, four All-Region players, four NIIC Players-ofthe-Year, and 46 NIIC All-Conference players.
Nationally prominent, nationally ranked, and nationally
recognized for their accomplishments, the Spartans prefer
to raise the bar even higher. Not willing to accept less than
they are capable of, they are determined to set a standard
that other Spartan soccer teams will find difficult to achieve,
if not impossible.
4
AU Women’s Soccer
Head Coach Kanute Drugan believes the Spartan
mindset supports that determination. “We believe we need
to expect things of ourselves before we can do them,” said
Drugan. “We want to hold ourselves to a higher standard
than anybody expects of us. We make no excuses for
ourselves. We just get out and try to get it done.”
Getting it done may prove a little more difficult for the
Spartans with the loss to graduation of five of the most
accomplished Spartans in their team’s history. At least that
is what most observers might expect. Drugan doesn’t see it
that way. “Human will can be a powerful energy. Just
having a strong enough will to achieve often will get it done
for you. One thing I know to be true with this team is they
have the will to become the best they can become.”
In fact, the standard of success has already been
determined through a decade of outstanding achievement
for the program. Drugan confidently stated that “this team
expects to raise the bar. They are determined to try to do
just that. I believe they will. There are so many wonderful
traditions in our women’s soccer program, but one of them
is that each graduating class is challenged to determine
what they want their class to accomplish in their four years
2003
Women’s Prospectus
here. Where do they want to leave the bar? What do they
want their graduating legacy to be? Once you commit to it,
then suddenly, you get anxious and focused on getting it
done.”
A close look at this year's Spartans reveals that they
appear to have the talent to get it done. They have an
experienced group of seven seniors to provide leadership,
and an exceptionally talented freshman and sophomore
group to support that leadership.
Leading the Spartans this season will be senior cocaptains, Laura Bozek (Lyons Township HS, Indian Head
Park, IL), a three-year NIIC All-Conference midfielder and
Heather Guetschow (Dundee-Crown HS, Carpentersville,
IL), a three-year starter at the stopper position. Bozek and
Guetschow, along with the other three-year starter Chelsea
Lloyd (South HS, Crystal Lake, IL), are three of those seven
seniors that will play a prominent leadership role for the
Spartans. Starting forward and NIIC All-Conference
selection, senior Carmen Zobel (Lewiston HS, ID) tallied 16
goals as a junior and will carry much of the scoring load.
Seniors Melissa Hart (Griffith HS, IN), Janneth Velazquez
(Kelly HS, Chicago, IL), and Kate Barnidge (Soldan
International HS, St. Louis, MO) add substantial varsity
experience to the Spartan line-up.
AU’s sophomores return three starters from last season.
Goalkeeper Alicia Martin (Lake Park HS, Roselle, IL) set a
new Spartan record for shut-outs (12). She will look for
support again from returning marking backs Allison Banta
(Griffith HS, IN) and Corey Krysiak (Thomas More HS,
Milwaukee, WI). Sophomores Meghan Stoltman (Jacobs
HS, Algonquin, IL), Lynn Sukach (Ann Arbor Huron HS,
Ypsilanti, MI), and Abby Wackerly (Alton Marquette
Catholic HS, Godfrey, IL) received significant playing time
as freshmen and will be competing for starting roles this
season. Forward Kym Smith (Pewaukee HS, Waukesha, WI)
and wing Jenn Garlinsky (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, IL)
should also compete for starting roles vacated by
graduation.
Boasting of a heavy imprint from beyond the Illinois
borders, the Spartans once again secured a superb
recruiting class. Providing international experience,
Melanie Lopes (Baulkham Hills HS, New South Wales,
Australia) will be a freshman to watch this season. She joins
Kentucky Olympic Development Program (ODP) and
Second Team All-State forward Anna Wallace (MadisonvilleNorth Hopkins HS, Madisonville, KY) as two of the more
highly acclaimed freshmen. Other out-of-state imports
expected to make an impact will be Erin Kwiatkowski
(Rockford HS, Rockford, MI), Amanda Haines (North
Muskegon HS, North Muskegon, MI), Lauren Thomas
(Thomas More HS, Milwaukee, WI), Kristen Buehler
(Griffith HS, IN), and Stephanie Springman (Hobart HS,
IN).
Leading the way for the home-state recruits will be local
products Morgan Roewer (Woodstock HS, IL), Shalisse
Mathieu (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, IL), Shanna
Thorpe (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, IL), Shari Sterling
(Glenbard East HS, Lombard, IL), and Tara Klotz (HinckleyBig Rock HS, IL). Downstate stand-outs Ashley Camillo
(Collinsville HS, IL) and Ashley Steiling (St. Teresa HS,
Decatur, IL) should also contribute right away. The other
freshman seeking a varsity spot will be Lindsay Carlson
(Stillman Valley HS, IL).
Transfers to AU that are expected to contribute right
away are Jessica Reczek (Fremd HS, Harper CC, Palatine,
IL), Krista Lessmeister (Plainfield HS, Waubonsee CC,
Plainfield, IL), and Hilary O’Friel (Dixon HS, Sauk Valley CC,
Dixon, IL).
Aurora has a deep and talented roster that is motivated
and determined to succeed beyond the levels of the past.
And if past history is evidence, then expect to see them
“Raise the Bar”.

Eckhart Hall
Aurora University is a private, independent,
comprehensive institution with an enrollment of more than
4,000 students. AU is accredited by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools.
Aurora University traces its origins to the 1893 founding of
Mendota Seminary. In 1985, Aurora College changed its name
to Aurora University to reflect the growth of curricular offerings
at the graduate level. Today the university enrolls more than
4,000 students in the College of Arts, Sciences and Business;
College of Education; and George Williams College of Health
and Human Services. More than 40 undergraduate majors are
offered, and at the advanced level, the institution offers
master’s degrees in business, education, recreation
administration, and social work, as well as a doctoral degree in
education. Through its merger with George Williams College,
the university operates a second campus in Williams Bay,
Wisconsin.
Aurora University is located in west Aurora, within an
hour’s drive of Chicago and at the western end of the Illinois
Research and Development Corridor. It is accessible via
Interstate 88 at the Orchard Road exit.
The University also has a campus near Lake Geneva, WI.
Set on 241 acres, the Aurora University Lake Geneva campus is
a site for summer family church camps, a respite camp for
children with cancer and diabetes, and a place for student
gatherings, outdoor education activities, an experiential
leadership program, and year-round family programs. The
campus also serves students enrolled in Aurora University’s
Master of Arts in Teaching Program and hosts the annual Music
by the Lake summer festival and the Music by the Lake
Academy of the Arts.
The Alumni Hall of Physical Education features a
racquetball court, climbing wall, complete locker room
facilities, a training room, weight room, aerobic-activities
room, classroom, and coaches’ offices.
