From corporate to small business, Linda Handley has been
passionate in her mission to help others and improve the lives of
those around her, often through creative and unconventional means
going beyond volunteering. Linda is a multi talented woman who is
an entrepreneur, author and Executive Assistant Director for the
Womenâ??s Small Business Association. WSBA is a professional
group with over 700 members in seven counties in W. PA. WSBA is a
valuable resource for business women, by helping and stimulating
small and start up businesses. The goal of the WSBA is to foster
women’s economic independence by helping them develop skills
needed for entrepreneurial success through networking and
education. Linda is also a dedicated volunteer who has found many
innovative ways to help the causes in which she most believes,
including donating the proceeds “Squeekie and Louie” to the
American Cancer Society. Publishing and donating the proceeds was
Lindaâ??s gift to her father when he was struggling with cancer. It
was a story written by her father and told to her as child. It
remained in her heart and she chose to share it when her father was
re-diagnosed with Lymphoma. In December 2007 after much soul
searching and contemplation, she formed Marlin Property
Management, a real estate investment company. With a focus on
urban restoration, including purchasing homes, renovating and
leasing them, Linda and her business partner began their first
project, restoring a 100 year old home. After construction and
renovations, emails from the happy tenants of Marlinâ??s first
project still provide Linda with happiness. Lindaâ??s moving journey
is featured in the book Inspired Entrepreneurs: A Collection of
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 16

Female Triumphs in Life and Business. Published in May 2010, the
book highlights successful female entrepreneurs and their
professional as well as personal voyages. Lindaâ??s chapter focuses
on how she was able to leverage her professional experience into a
career that is aligned with her personal values and what she sees as
her life work. From July 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010, proceeds
from the book will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Linda
was recently awarded the WSBA Leadership Award during WSBA
Small Business week in July 2010. Join me on Thursday to listen and
learn from this talented and accomplished woman.
Planners Pointers
Jul 6, 2010 04:39AM
Welcome to Planner’s Pointer’s Planners Pointers is a blog and talk
cast to help beginning event planners with their event planning.
Give them ideas on planning better events, books to read and
websites to discover.
This week I would like to talk about 15 tips on Business Etiquette
1. Dress Professionally. It doesn’t always mean a suit, but clean and
neat is necessary. Tip – dress like the people you are going to meet.
If you are attending a meeting on behalf of your client, ask if they
have a dress code and dress appropriately.
2. Arrive on time. Arrive 10 minutes early. If you are meeting for
lunch let, the people know that if you arrive early you’ll get a table.
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 17
http://www.PPLMag.com
Have cell phone numbers in case you are running late.
3. Have a clear agenda on what you want to accomplish with your
meeting. It doesn’t need written down, although that’s a good idea.
4. Schedule as much time as you need and don’t short yourself.
Allow at least one hour for a one to one meeting.
5. If you are the one who did the asking, offer to pay for the meal.
The other person may say, Dutch treat is fine and that’s OK also. If
doing separate checks, say so when you are ordering.
6. Order food you are comfortable eating.
7. Do not order alcohol at lunch.
8. Remember all those things your mother tried to teach you as a
child about chewing your food. Do talk with your mouth full. Butter
your bread one bite at a time. Cut your meat two bites at a time.
Don’t shovel your food; it’s not a race.
9. Remember that a first time meeting a new or possible client it’s a
lot like a first date.
10. Keep the table as clear as possible when you are eating.
11. Once the person you are meeting has arrived, put your cell
phone on mute.
12. Keep the lunch conversation professional, but light. Do not ask
personal questions. Dodge age questions. A question I get a lot is
who old are my children. My response is grown and flown.
13. Remember is meeting is a conversation not an interview.
Positively Pittsburgh Live
Page 18
http://www.PPLMag.com
14. Listen to what other people are saying. Try not to formulate your
response while they are responding to your questions.
15. Follow up with a Thank you note. Handwritten is best. Use a
“fun” stamp not machined postage or stamps off of a roll.
