KEY CHARACTERISTICS
Inspirational guides that take a selective approach for the discerning traveller.
A carefully edited choice of entries compiled by writers with an in-depth knowledge of the destination.
Stylish design with evocative photography, matched by text that is informative, reliable and entertaining.
A ‘dip into’ list of over 100 great ideas – things to see and do, places to stay, bars and restaurants to seek out, with plenty of secret corners,
local haunts, quirky and off-the-beaten track suggestions thrown into the mix.
Ideas are grouped by area, with detailed mapping for ease of use on the ground.
An ‘inspiration’ section allows the reader to tailor-make an itinerary - whether they’re looking for adventure, culture, romance, family fun or a
lazy day, there’s a list of suggestions to match their mood.
11
Experience Guides
HOW EACH BOOK IS ORGANISED
Experience guides are divided into three elegantly designed sections:
1. After a brief introduction to the city and a city map, the book begins with an ‘inspiration’ section of around 20 pages. This is filled
with suggestions covering a wide range of things to do, places to eat, drink and shop – all grouped by mood.
Many of the headings are applicable to all destinations in the series, In the Mood For…. a gourmet blow-out; retail therapy; contemporary
arts/fine art; adventure; a night on the town; being pampered; family fun; a lazy day; romance; escaping the crowds;
offbeat exploration; people watching etc. Each individual suggestion is cross-referenced to the main section of the book, where
they are given full coverage.
2. The main section presents a ‘dip into’ selection of 100+ experiences. Pick any page at random and a great idea is presented. The
section is subdivided into neighbourhoods, each neighbourhood having its own ‘menu’ of ideas, carefully chosen by writers who
know the destination inside out. The choice is selective rather than comprehensive, but with enough variety to plan many a perfect
day, whatever the reader’s mood. Each chapter also has its own area map, plotted with all the suggested sights, restaurants,
shops etc.
3. There is also an A to Z section at the end of the book, containing all the information you need on getting around and other key practical points.
MARKET COMPETITION
The new Insight Experience series is an exciting, upmarket addition to the Insight stable. The striking covers and elegant interior design
are more than a match for other ‘style’ guides, but unlike the competitors their visual appeal is backed by the quality content and
mapping that are the hallmark of Insight.

Explore Guides
HOW EACH BOOK IS ORGANISED
Explore Guides are divided into three main sections:
Introduction
The first point of call for essential background information on culture, geography, lifestyle and traditions, plus the
lowdown on food, drink, shopping, entertainment, history and other pertinent topics, from Modernisme in Explore
Barcelona to Turkish baths in Explore Istanbul. Practical suggestions are covered in a “top tips” box, while the

the background information needed to set the walks and tours in context.
Best Routes
Each guide features around 15 illuminating self-guided walks and tours, with something for every
budget, taste and trip length. The routes have clear, easy-to-follow maps, hand-picked places to eat

TARGET MARKET
Great Breaks are aimed at a broad age group from 25 to 65, encompassing families, couples and an active older generation. Our readers are in
general relatively well-educated, independent travellers; they may also be ecologically-minded, having preferred to stay at home for their
holidays rather than increase their carbon footprint.
This series will also appeal to those who want to rediscover Britain’s gems on a short break. Some readers are comfortable navigating a
destination on their own but are hoping to find insider places and ‘greener’ options; others may be less familiar with the destination and prefer
the structure of a pre-prepared tour. Some will be travelling by car but the books will give options for cycling and public transport. The guides
are intended to be used on-the-go for both first-time and repeat visitors.

Fresh, contemporary and user-friendly design with full-colour photographs.
New, detailed, full-colour mapping. One map per route in addition to an overview map for the whole area.

well as smaller boutique hotels and B&Bs).
Features spreads (about 3 per guide) on local flavour: festivals, markets and events.
Special section on themed holidays and an extended active pursuits section.
Boxes within the Places chapters are full of practical information: best restaurants en route, boutique hotels, green tips, kids’ activities.

Great Breaks Guides
HOW EACH BOOK IS ORGANISED
Overview
Each book starts with a spread highlighting the Top Ten Things to Do in that area or town. This is followed by an engaging
introduction that is the first point of call for essential background information on culture, geography, lifestyle and
traditions, plus the lowdown on food, drink, shopping, history and other pertinent topics. This provides all the background
information needed to set the walks and tours in context.
Walks and Tours
Each guide features around 8 irresistible self-guided walks and tours, which show how to get the most out of the
destination, with something for every budget and taste. The tours have clear, easy-to- follow maps, hand-picked places to
eat and drink en route, top accommodation recommendations, green tips and informative feature boxes. At the start of
each tour, a ‘Highlights’ box provides the reader with the main attractions along the way with an indication of the distance
and duration of the tour.
Travel Tips
The final section of the book incorporates a comprehensive series of listings, with separate sections on active holidays
(birdwatching, watersports, cycling, fishing, golf, etc.) and themed holidays (volunteering, painting and cooking courses,
conservation work, etc.). There is also a Practical Information section and a comprehensive listing of accommodation
websites.

HOW THE BOOK IS ORGANISED
After an introduction about the current world of cruising, the book is divided into 5
sections:
The Cruising Experience – detailing what travellers can expect when taking a cruise
Types of Cruising – This section outlines the various types of cruising available,
whether for families or couples, around the world or themed.
Choosing the Right Cruise – Information, not just on how to choose the right ship and
cabin, but also on how the different cruise lines compare, and what you can expect
from each one.
Practical Information – Outlining such practical considerations as how to book and
budget for a cruise trip, ship safety, what to take, and what to expect from a first
cruise.
The Ships and their Ratings – The main section of the book, which gives frank and
independent reviews of 275 cruise ships. Each ship is scored according to categories
such as accommodation, food, service etc. and given an overall score so that they can
be easily compared.
