Traditionally the Gold Cup day
program conducted at Muswellbrook
in the heart of Hunter Valley horse
country on the first Tuesday in
November each year ranks as one
of the most joyous in country racing.
Not only does it showcase some of the best
quality country racing, generally attracting
competitors from Newcastle, Sydney and
Provincials as well locals, but it coincides with
the running of ‘The race that stops the nation’
- the Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
The full Flemington program can be seen at
Muswellbrook; the only TAB-covered country
meeting in NSW on the day and one which
sees six of its races run after the Melbourne
Cup.
Upwards of 7,000 patrons are expected
to gather this year at
the picturesque
Muswellbrook racecourse to thrill to the running
of the Melbourne Cup and $50,000 Vinery
Stud Muswellbrook Gold Cup, the highlight of
a $125,000 program. This spectacular day of
racing is preceded on the Sunday 2 November
by Ladies and Community Day featuring the Mt
Arthur Coal Wayne Harris Handicap.
Also, there will be a wonderful array of prizes
available for best-dressed women, men and
children on both days in Fashions On The Field.
Don’t miss the two-day racing extravaganza on

Murrurundi’s
iconic bridge
saved to swing for
years to come
Over a hundred people gathered to
celebrate the resurrection of the historic
Swinging Bridge in Murrurundi on
Saturday 25th October. Upper Hunter
Shire Council’s $70,000 project to repair
the wooden pedestrian bridge had
widespread community support.
Mayor Michael Johnsen said there was a lot of passion
in the community about the Swinging Bridge which
crosses the Pages River.
“Thousands of photos have been taken here by tourists passing through, of birthday and anniversary celebrations and brides and grooms newly
married,” he said.
The bridge was built in 1927, the third on the site, with the first bridge built some time after 1873 to transport the Chief Magistrate’s buggy from the
Royal Hotel to the nearby Court House in times of flood.
There is a great deal of pride in the fact the bridge and the whole town were listed by the National Trust in 1981. The Swinging Bridge was also listed
as an item of regional significance in the Upper Hunter Local Environmental Plan 2013.
Restoration started in 2012 and as with many renovations, once work started, more problems were found.
All the six metre tall bridge uprights were replaced with new native Australian
hardwood. The 50 metres of decking was replaced with hardwood. The
cables have been refurbished and the approaches to the bridge have
been improved. The bridge has been painted in black and lime white in
consultation with Council’s Heritage Adviser. A maintenance plan was
developed in May 2013 and agreed to by the Heritage Committee and
Council.
At the re-opening, Murrurundi’s 2014 Citizen of the Year Brian Hunt and
Murrurundi Community Leaders’ Forum president Rodney Swansborough
thanked Council for saving the bridge.
Mr Hunt officially re-opened the bridge with a flourish of a sword and, with
a nod and a wink to the Sydney Harbour Bridge opening, a uniformed man
on horseback galloped in also brandishing a sword and popped a few
balloons.

Return of Folk in Broke
By Rebecca Jenkins
Returning next year on 28th March 2015 is the ever
popular Folk in Broke Festival along with a change of style
of the festival. In the five years of its existence, the Folk
in Broke focused on bringing a relaxed traditional folk
atmosphere for those who participated. Next year the
band line up will still include folk, but there is also a more
blues/roots/world feel to the choices of performers. This
change in direction will surely give the festival a more
colourful and eclectic feel for those joining in the party at
McNamara Park.
The 2015 Folk in Broke Festival is set to be massive with ten bands lined
up to play one after the other on the day. Artists include independent
artists from the Hunter as well as the odd touring artist from overseas,
keeping the mix interesting and diverse. This year’s line up are: Lloyd
Spiegel, Alex Bowen, Gambirra, Hillbilly Goats, Good Corn Liquor, Nic
Cassey, Galleri, Oscar Lush and The Timbers. The festival doesn’t just
stop at good music. There is also a line up of workshops, art spaces and
(of course) ‘Word Zone’.
Along with the eclectic line up of performers and other arty bits and
pieces, there will be a number of 50s-style caravans onsite serving craft
beers and fine wine (as the event is strictly NO BYO), as well as the
popular Sacred Tree Markets. Vendors throughout the market will include
handmade goods, healers, food, produce and a myriad of other delights
(including a few for the kiddies!).
But wait! There’s more! On Friday 27th March (the day before) a separate
‘lunch’ event will be held that night in Broke Hall. Also, free camping
grounds are provided at the neighbouring vineyard. The organisers wish
to thank Paul and Gail Nightingale for the use of their grounds at the
Nightingale Winery.
Tickets for the not-for-profit cultural feast are $75 per person plus
booking fee and are available online at www.dashtickets.com.au
Any enquiries, please call 0407 464 440.
Come and experience the full eclectic, family-friendly splendour of the
Folk in Broke Festival. Purchase your tickets before they disappear!

Indian film feast at Scone Films
THE LUNCHBOX, rated PG, will be screening on Friday 7th November at 7.30pm.
In Mumbai, millions of lunchboxes are sent to offices everyday. Just one in a million is ever delivered to the
wrong address. This is the story of that one lunchbox and how a little of pinch of happiness can change your
life.
A neglected Mumbai housewife attempts to spice up her marriage by preparing a special lunch for her
husband. When it is mistakenly delivered to a lonely widower they exchange notes to get to the bottom of the
problem. These gradually evolve into a relationship of letters. It’s a celebration of life’s small pleasures, like
the simple act of cooking something delicious.
The reviews make this beautiful film sound like an Indian food safari is happening behind the storyline. Rated
4 Stars by At The Movies.
The Lunchbox, rated PG, is screening at the Senior Citizen’s Centre, Oxford Road, Scone. Entry $10. Everyone
is welcome. Advance tickets are available at Serendipity Scone. Refreshments available. Details are on the

Devil Ark finalists in NSW Tourism Awards
It’s a exciting day for Devil Ark, with the announcement of the Tasmanian
devil charity being named as finalists in the 2015 NSW Tourism Awards.
Devil Ark is a finalist in the New Tourism Development category for the Devil
Ark Interpretative Centre and Devils in the Wild Tours.
The Interpretative Centre was opened and tours launched late last year. Tours have run successfully
since then and continue to be popular. The tour runs for 2.5hours and is fully escorted through
the Devil Ark site in the Barrington Tops of NSW. The tours take visitors into the wild with devils,
and they witness them feeding and socialising in their natural environment.
Faced with an uncertain financial future earlier this year, Devil Ark has survived, thanks to its
supporters and sponsors. A new campaign Dollars for Devils has just been launched and it is
hoped that much needed ongoing funds will be raised. People are encouraged to donate $5 a
week and after a year, that’s a $260 tax deductable donation. General Manager, Tim Faulkner
explains, “When you consider that’s the cost of a cup of coffee or a loaf of bread, it’s a small
donation each week. But when a few people jump on board, it’s an effective way of raising
significant funds.” More at www.devilark.com.au/dollarsfordevils
Devil Ark is the most successful breeding program for endangered Tasmanian devils and 30 joeys were born this year, boosting the population to
almost 200. The devils live in huge enclosures which enables them to retain their natural traits. They are genetically managed, producing diverse devils
with the best chance of long-term survival. Devils from Devil Ark will be returned to a fenced area of Tasmania in early 2015.
Canadian author to visit Muswellbrook Library
Join us on Thursday 6th November at 1.30pm to hear Ian Stout talk about his two recently published books. A book
that movies are made from.
Canadian, Ian Stout is a keen house-sitter and has visited many different countries around the world. He has some interesting and very funny tales
to tell.
“The question I encounter the most when discussing my books is ‘where do I get the ideas’ for the things I write. It’s quite simple. They come from a
vast well of information and experiences I’ve stumbled through over the many years of my life.”
‘Necessary Larceny’ - is a fun story of a gang of seniors living in retirement in Florida who are bilked of their life savings by a gang of slick conmen.
When they find authorities can do nothing for them, they decide to get their money back themselves.
‘Necessary Tourist’ - Alone in the densely forested mountains of tiny Grenada, Rachel Lusinski desperately seeks a way to safety, unaware an army
of grandparents from Florida, local volunteers, and police are beating the bushes searching for her. All the while, the man responsible for the search is
using her as a pawn to settle a twenty-five year old grudge. This is a free event, but bookings are essential. Image: Ian Stout.

For the love of Lovedale
There are many popular events held on the grounds of the various wineries of the Hunter Valley that showcase all
that the area has to offer, served with a good slice of local entertainment. But only one includes a massive total of
seven wineries, each serving its own gourmet palate made from local produce by local hands, accompanied by
good local music. The event, of course, is the Lovedale Long Lunch ready and set to go in May of 2015.
Over the 16 - 17th of May, Lovedale’s seven wineries will explode in a merriment of food, wine and groove. Each individual winery has a set menu,
served with fine wines and craft beers unique to Lovedale and each will have its own live act playing on the grounds. The bands featured include
OxyGen, The Big Bang, The Coconut Trio, Victoria McGee, Jungle Kings, Phonic, Saxanova, Hornet and DLove. A wide eclectic range of music to
suit all tastes.
Tickets go on sale 1 November and include packages for either day and for groups over ten. Both packages include entry to all seven wineries, meal
tickets, dessert/cheese tickets and a Lovedale Long Lunch wine glass. Prices are set at: Saturday $85 per person; Sunday $65 per person. For

Pink candlelight fundraiser hailed a success
Cancer is one disease that has touched us all in some way, shape or form. But with such generous individuals
such as Scone resident, Liza White, the organiser behind the Cocktails by Pink Candlelight fundraiser and the Real
Housewives of Scone Calendar, the fight to find a cure and relieve those afflicted becomes just that little bit easier.
On the 24th October, 150 people gathered together to celebrate the launch of the calender which puts a human and very local face to those of whom
have been affected by breast cancer. The fundraiser included an auction hosted by Romany Brooks from Bresic Whitney in Sydney and the special
guest speaker, Lisa Poulos who featured in the documentary ‘A Life Laid Bare’ on Australian Story. Lisa Poulos had her life turned upside down
after a car incident revealed that she had breast cancer. She was generous enough to share her story and words of encouragement with those who
gathered on the night.
So far, the fundraiser has accumulated a total of $25,000 to be donated to the breast cancer cause. Liza White was pleased with the still-accumulating
monetary result and has expressed her gratitude to all those involved.
“I’d like to mention how wonderful the Scone community is and the amazing support and donations received from small businesses within the
community. Also, special thanks to Scone Race Club for their support - above and beyond my expectations!” says Liza, “Special mention to Ross
Coffey who photographed us all for the calendar - incredibly talented gentleman!”
To purchase a Real Housewives of Scone Calendar, please contact Liza on [email protected] or on the Facebook site. Calendars are $77
each and all proceeds go towards breast cancer research. It’s a small thing to do that’ll help so many who need it. Contact Liza for your calender and
help a good cause!

Who’s boss, you or your cat?
By Dr Rachel Nugent, Pet Medical
Cats are beautiful and smart, perhaps a little too smart. If you aren’t careful, you might become
your cat’s well-trained pet. Cats don’t use words to communicate, but are experts at getting
what they want and training us to do their bidding.
Let them yowl! You get home from work and the first thing you do is rush to the fridge or cupboard to get a delicious
meal out for your feline friend who is waiting in eager anticipation, rubbing round your legs. In your cat’s eyes every trip
to the cupboard or fridge might result in a delicious meal. The next time she fancies a snack, she tries hanging out near
the fridge or rubbing against your leg. You don’t notice, so she draws your attention with a yowl. As it’s late and you are
tired, you just hope to keep her quiet by feeding her. This is the start of your training. Now her every feline whim will be
reinforced with a yowl. If she fancies a stroll, she yowls by the window. If she decides on a midnight snack, she yowls by
the bed. If you ignore this dictatorial behaviour, the cat simply assumes you have forgotten your training and redoubles her
yowling. Behaviour specialists tell us we need to ignore the yowl or other undesirable behaviour at least ten times before
the cat will be convinced it will not work.
Distraction is the best strategy. You can speed up the training by distracting your cat from her demands. When she
yowls, distract her with a game. In most cases, especially with young cats, attention is the greatest reward anyway.
Food rewards work too. Does your cat love having the mats brushed out, nails clipped or teeth cleaned? Or does the
grooming earn you a hiss and a swipe? That’s your cat training you to stop the grooming. But basic grooming is important
so you have to be the one doing the training. Use delicious treats like roast chicken when you teach your cat to tolerate grooming. Be careful with
timing, though so you don’t reward the hissing and swiping. Do that and you can kiss groomiong goodbye forever.
Remember, if you reward the hisses, swipes and yowls, you will make your cat the boss and that is not a good idea.

Do you want to learn how to drive a car? Or do you
know somebody who wants to learn? Perhaps you
are a worried mother who wants your child to learn
how to drive safely. If you’re any of these, head to
the PCYC in Singleton and book a session on how to
drive safely in the PCYC Safer Drivers Course.
The Safer Drivers Course offers two different modules for drivers. The
first module offers a three-hour group discussion on how to avoid and
manage risks on the road, with a maximum of twelve members in
each group. The discussion will be presented by a facilitator.
The second module included in the Safety Drivers Course includes a
two hour driving coaching session to help learn the road rules and to
develop a low-risk driving strategy. This will include two drivers and a
coach.
If you wish to take part in the PCYC Safer Drivers Course, you are
required to have completed fifty hours of actual on-road driving, but
exclude credit used in the 3 for 1 driving scheme. The course costs
$140 in total and once you have completed the course, you will get 20
credits recorded in your learner driver course.
To find out more, call the PCYC on 9625 9111 or visit www.safedrivers.

Brad Cole at the
Shamrock By Rebecca Jenkins
Brad Cole has led a charmed career thus far. As an
independent country music singer and songwriter, he’s
wowed audiences everywhere with his talents and now he
and his band will be appearing at the PCYC fundraiser in
Muswellbrook on the 29th November to help raise some
much-needed funds for the Muswellbrook PCYC.
Hailed as an ‘exceptional song craftsman, vocalist and live entertainer’, Brad
Cole has built his own reputation and as a result, has become one of the most
popular artists on the Australian music scene. Making his debut in 2010, he’s
remained an unsigned artist, built a following on both AM and FM radio and
has had his last three consecutive single releases reach number 3 on the
official Australian Country Music Radio charts. As an independent artist, he’s
really given the signed ‘big names’ a run for their money!
So impressive is Brad as an independent artist, he found himself nominated
amongst the likes of The McClymonts, Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Brand
for the ‘Most Played Country Music Work on Australian Radio and TV’ at
the APRA Awards just a short while after appearing on the scene. His stage
presence is also something to be marvelled at. Dynamic and lively, when Brad
takes to the stage with his band, the room is instantly pumping with energy!
Brad will be bringing his individual, energetic style to the Shamrock Hotel
in Muswellbrook to perform at what will be a fun-filled PCYC Fundraiser. “I
wanted to do something to raise funds for such a great organisation as the
PCYC is; it is a valuable asset to the town of Muswellbrook, and what better
way to do it than to stage a fun-filled night of entertainment in fancy dress
with the highly-acclaimed Brad Cole and his band performing,” stated Rose
Carroll, licensee of the Shamrock Hotel in Muswellbrook.
The frivolity will start at 5:30 pm on 29th November. Tickets can be purchased
from the Muswellbrook PCYC and the Shamrock Hotel. Presale tickets $70,
at the door $90. It will be a fancy dress theme of the letter ‘P’ to add to the
evening.
Any enquiries, please phone the Shamrock Hotel on 6543 1613.

Real Estate Guide
CPI figures are good news for home owners
The Real Estate Institute of Australia is calling on the Reserve Bank of Australia to maintain current interest rate levels
following the release of the latest Consumer Price Index figures.
The September 2014 quarter CPI figures show that the RBA’s underlying trend series measures of inflation continue to be within its target zone. REIA
President, Peter Bushby, says this should translate into good news for home owners.
