Welcome to La Crete
Host site of the
2016 ASAA 2A Boys
Provincial Basketball
Championship
La Crete Public School
Home of the LANCERS!
Competing at an Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association high
school provincial championship is the culmination of years of
practice, commitment and dedication on the part of student
athletes and coaches. It is in recognition of these outstanding
efforts that I welcome you to the 2015/2016 ASAA 2A Boys
Basketball Provincial Championship, hosted by La Crete Public
School.
The significant volunteer time committed to this event by members of the local
championship organizing committee will ensure that you are treated especially
well this weekend. I wish to thank event chair Jeff Driedger for taking on the
mammoth task of hosting. The efforts of Jeff, the staff, students, parents and
friends from the La Crete community should be recognized and I encourage athletes and coaches to take a few moments during the tournament to say thank you
to your hosts.
The ASAA is proud to be associated with student athletes and coaches, and we
know many of these individuals either are, or will be leaders in their schools and
community. I challenge all athletes, coaches and spectators to promote the highest levels of ethics, integrity, sportsmanship and respect for others throughout
this championship – both during competition and outside of the competitive arena. You are role models who we trust will celebrate your success with humility
and defeat with grace. What a great opportunity you have to show everyone the
positive correlation between school athletics and positive character development.
I want to acknowledge and thank the ASAA’s Senior Partners: Alberta Milk and
SUBWAY®, Major Partners: Morgex Insurance and Entripy Shops and our Suppliers, which are listed throughout this championship program, for their ongoing
support of the ASAA and student athletes across the province. Their support of
the ASAA enhances the Have a fantastic time at this championship; I trust you will
take home memories that will last throughout your lifetime.

On behalf of Mackenzie County Council and our residents, I welcome you to the
most northern corner of our province! It is our pleasure to be part of hosting this year’s
provincial basketball competition in the Hamlet of La Crete.
Benefits of being engaged in sports of any kind are abundant. Do you know that
according to the International Basketball Federation, over 450 million people across the
globe play basketball? Team sports are fun and are proven to boost self-esteem in people
of all ages. While in school, many of you will establish life-long friendships and long lasting
memories from your sport team competitions. Through team sports, you are learning to
respect and appreciate each other’s talents. Sports are teaching you perseverance and
endurance. They are also great character builders. Your achievements are and will be celebrated!
I quote Michael Jordan: "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins
championships."
We wish that you have a great competition and a rewarding experience on your
visit to the Mackenzie Region part of the province.

The Lancers bring a veteran group of players to Provincials in 2016. Six grade 12s and three grade 11s build the
core of the team. Two grade 10s round out the roster bringing energy and enthusiasm. The Lancers have enjoyed a successful season, finishing with a 20-1 record. This included tournament wins in Peace River, Grande Prairie, La Crete and
a silver medal performance in Calgary. The Lancers look forward to being hosts this year and wish the best of luck to all
the teams competing at this year’s Provincials.

Starting our season with five grade 10's we thought it would be somewhat of a rebuilding year especially with
injuries hitting our team early on. The 2015/16 season ended off having a great year placing in four our of eight tournaments. Highlights include winning bronze at the last three tournaments heading into zones. Without a league to play
in, we had to take advantage of every tournament opportunity we could. The Saints coaching staff would like to thank
our men for an amazing, fun filled season and we are excited for them to represent the Northwest zone in La Crete! We
would also like to wish everyone else participating in this year's provincials continued success. Hard Work, Pays Off!!

This will be Assumption's 6th straight appearance to Provincials after going 24-5 on three seasons. Assumption
won their home tournament, finished 5th at Superman in Three Hills, second in Eastglen (ranked 3a), 4th at Fr. Troy in
Edmonton, won their Lakeland League and finished up as North East Zone Champs. This years team is a mix of youthful
grade 11's and experienced grade 12's. Assumption would like to thank La Crete school and its numerous volunteers
for making this, what will be, a great Championship!

The 2016 Holy Redeemer Rebels have had a successful year going 22-8 on the season, including capturing two
gold medals and going undefeated in league play. The Rebels captured their fourth consecutive North Central Zone
Championship in convincing fashion. This year’s team is led by a handful of returning players from last season, and a
strong contingent of hardworking juniors. We are looking forward to extending our season at this year’s Provincial
Championships, and wish all teams participating the best of luck. Thank you to La Crete for hosting the 2015/2016 2A

Tofield has been growing as a team over the past few years and we are excited to be back at Provincials for the
second year in a row. The Titans have had and up and down season but we are ready to finish strong. We are led by a
strong group of grade 12 players who have a long history playing together and are a well meshed team. The 2 Titan
Rookies have had no problem fitting in and have rounded out our team nicely. Tofield congratulates all the teams who
have made it to this great tournament and we look forward to a super weekend of basketball. Thank you to La Crete
for hosting us, we appreciate your hospitality! See you all on the court!

St. Joseph's Collegiate Crusaders are back to provincials for the third year in a row. The first year in over 5 years of not being there they
received 7th, and last year they received 6th. After going 9-3 in league they went on to beat Eagle Butte, and Monsignor McCoy to win the SEBC
league for the 2nd year in a row. This was quite the accomplishment after graduating 6 gr 12's last year, and knowing that we would only have 2
grade 12's this year. There was even the debate of whether the crusaders should play in the JV league. With an overall record of 24-6 they have
had great games with not only their SEBC competitors such as Eagle Butte, McCoy, WR Myers, and Rosemary but also teams such as Heritage
Christian, Kate Andrews, Livingstone, Ryley, JR Robson, Calgary Christian and JC Charyk-Hanna. The SJC Crusaders would go on to beat the Hanna
Hawks 71-58 in the South Central zone 2A championship to win for the 2nd year in a row. With a solid grade 11 core of players the crusaders are
hoping to do well this year and make a splash in La Crete.

This is my 14th year teaching in Hanna Alberta at J.C. Charyk school. The first year I was here our Sr boys team did not win a
game finishing with a final record of 0-27. Having four young children of my own I decided to start a little league basketball program up in
our community. It started quite small as most rural communities in Alberta are focused mainly on hockey. After some time the program
started to gain some traction. I have been coaching this particular group of students for the last eight years. For the first time in 34 years
(1982) our Sr. boys program has qualified for Provincials. I am extremely proud of what the boys have accomplished, being a small 2A
school of 127 students. This group of young men have worked hard over the years to accomplish our goal of competing at the Provincial
level.

Overall the Stirling Lakers have had a successful year with an overall record of 24-7. This season they brought
home Gold in Stirling, Picture Butte, and WR Myers tournaments. The Lakers successfully repeated for the Zone Banner
in 2016 with their 9 Seniors and easily the tallest team Stirling has ever had (however that isn’t saying very much).
They have had some set backs with major injuries but have adjusted and improved their game. The Lakers are a group
of hard working kids with great attitudes and a hard work ethic. They are looking forward to a successful provincial run.

KA is a member of the Deep South Basketball Conference. We finished league play with a record of 6-2, second
to Stirling. We have participated in the Stirling, KA, Heritage Christian, Three Hills, WR Myers, and Rundle college tournaments this season and have an overall record of 21-11. We are led by our six seniors, and have been in the 2A rankings all season.
