On Saturday, April 6th the Educational and
Cultural Trust Fund sponsored the industry’s
most notable annual educational event. An audience of over 500 guests entered the Electric
Industry Center Auditorium to show support
to the talented students who would receive
their scholarship awards. The introduction of
the dais dignitaries by George Schuck was
followed with the presentation of colors by
the Electchester Boy Scout Troop 357. Music
majors from Queens College provided beautiful renditions of the Star Spangled Banner
and God Bless America.
Michael Yee, director of the Educational
and Cultural Trust Fund introduced Melvin
Smiley, president of the Lewis Howard
Latimer Progressive Association who opened
the breakfast with his invocation. Mr. Yee
then welcomed the recipients, their parents
and all those in attendance and reported on
the benefits available through the Educational
and Cultural Trust Fund.
Mr. Yee introduced the Chairman of the
Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry and the Chairman of the Educational
and Cultural Trust Fund, Dr. Gerald Finkel.
Dr. Finkel spoke about the undergraduate
experience and how it will benefit the recipients. Dr. Finkel spoke about the industry’s
desire to support educational opportunities
for participants and their families.
Included in the forty-four scholarships
awarded this year was a Father William J.
Kelley, O.M.I. Memorial Scholarship that
was presented to Corinne Olivia Fredericks
for studies at the New York State School of
Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell
University and was presented by Cornell’s
Director of Admissions, Cathleen Shiels.
Also awarded was the Dean Harry J. Carman
Fellowship presented to Lola A. Brown for
her Doctorate studies at the University of
Maryland.
Theresa Scalice-Lizzio representing the
Alumni Association of Scholarship Recipients and the 2013 Scholarship Committee,
announced the recipient of the award for
this year’s Annual Essay Contest. This year
the first prize, a $500 check, went to Jenna
Spinella. The topic assigned was, “In 2012,
11.8% of wage and salary workers are members of a union. In 1983, the first year in which
comparable union data became available, the
union membership rate was 20.1%. What has
contributed to this decline and what strategies
can be employed by Local 3, IBEW to halt
the decline?”
Members of the 2013 Scholarship Committee and members of the Futurian Society, Francis Gonsalves and Richard Tolins continued
the presentation of the scholarship awards.
Lance Van Arsdale gave a history of the
Sigurd B. Olsen Memorial Scholarship and
thanked Mr. Olsen and his family for their
extreme generosity. In 2001, the Olsen Foundation contributed the largest single amount
of money to the IBEW Disaster Fund for
the 9/11 victims. Mr. Olsen then presented
the five Sigurd B. Olsen Scholarships each
having a monetary value of $28,000.
The Keynote Speaker for this years’ program was the Honorable Joseph Crowley,
Congressman New York 14th Congressional
District. Other political figures in attendance
were Congresswoman Grace Meng; Toby
Stavisky, New York State Senator; Bill
DeBlasio, New York City Public Advocate
and candidate for Queens Borough President
Barry Grodenchick. New York City Comptroller John Liu was on hand to join the proud
recipients for photos.
Closing remarks were given by Local
3, IBEW Business Manager Christopher
Erikson who congratulated the students,
wished them success in their future endeavors
and stressed to the college-bound students
to be very afraid of those individuals who
have nothing good to say about unions and
threaten the valuable benefits collectively
bargained by unions. Erikson then brought
back Melvin Smiley to present the benediction to end the program.
