weekend news program.
WEEKEND
EDITION
This month marks the debut of
PBS NewsHour Weekend, an exciting
addition to THIRTEEN’s influential
and trusted lineup of news and public
affairs shows and an extension of one of
America’s most iconic news broadcasts.
PBS NewsHour correspondent Hari
Sreenivasan will anchor the program,
which will be broadcast Saturdays and
Sundays at 6 p.m. from the Tisch WNET
Studios at Lincoln Center.
In the following interview, he shares his
thoughts about PBS NewsHour Weekend.
How do you see your new role as anchor
of PBS NewsHour Weekend, and what do
you hope to accomplish?
I think we have an opportunity to experiment a bit more on the weekend program
as we bring the NewsHour to the next
step in its evolution. We're committed to
being available anywhere, anytime. That
means online and on air, weekdays and
weekends. I'm hoping to pull the audience
into the ways we create content, and help
us spread the word about it as well.
What do you think will be the biggest
difference between the weekend show
versus the weekday edition?
Well for starters, it’s a half hour versus a
whole one! And we have a new set, a new
city, and new opportunities for viewers
to engage while still keeping the depth
and context that viewers have come to
love and trust.
You’re so knowledgeable about new technology and have been director of digital
partnerships for the NewsHour. How do
you plan to incorporate technology on
the new show?
I hope to have “Anchor” hour, a bit like
office hours that your professors kept
in college. And I'll be open to viewers

across different social media platforms
and having a conversation about aspects
of the stories we are planning in the
coming weekend and then taking some of
these questions into our
editorial meeting. We'll
try to make sure some
of those questions
are addressed either
in our broadcast piece
or online.

Are there any topics you’re particularly
looking forward to covering?
Several. You'll have to watch to see
where we make our investments of time
and energy.
“We have a new set,
a new city, and new
opportunities for
viewers to engage.”
What attracted you
to journalism originally?
It is a license to stay
curious. No other proWeekend anchor
fession could have
Hari Sreenivasan
given me the range of
How do you think the
transition to New York will impact your life experiences journalism has, from the
people I've met, the places I've been, and

studio and the program all seven nights
a week. There are more than a few highprofile people to whom we’ll now have
much easier access.
How would you compare your experience working on the NewsHour with your
previous positions in network television?
We have the luxury of time. We still bother
to do the six- or seven-minute stories network broadcasts cannot afford to do these
days. We're the only place on television
where informed individuals can disagree
agreeably about matters that matter, night
after night.
What has been the most meaningful story
you’ve covered for the NewsHour?
I think the dozen stories on climate
change—thanks to the grant from the
Rockefeller Foundation. It is not one story
but if you watch my YouTube playlist of
more than an hour, it’s difficult to argue
that the changes with which these communities are now coping aren't real.
PBS NewsHour Weekend is made possible with support from PBS, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Lewis
B. Cullman and Louise Hirschfeld Cullman, Mutual of America, Judy and Josh Weston, Citi Foundation, In Memory
of Miriam and Ira D. Wallach, Cheryl and Philip Milstein Family, Rosalind P. Walter, Betty and John Levin, the Vital
Projects Fund, and Charlotte and David Ackert.

“A kid drops out of high school every 26 seconds. That’s one out of every four kids in
America, 40 to 50 percent if you’re a minority kid. That’s an epidemic that ought to
be unsatisfactory to a country of honor.”
–Michael Powell, Co-Chair of Grad Nation, America’s Promise Alliance
At THIRTEEN, we’ve dedicated ourselves
to being champions for education, whether
we’re teaching pre-schoolers to read

school students sharpen their math skills
with Cyberchase, or introducing teens to
the wonders of history with Mission US.

and local community-based organizations
that combat the crisis on the frontlines,
urging viewers across America to become
an “American Graduate Champion” by
volunteering with these organizations.
New York Yankees first baseman
Mark Teixeira—a champion in his own
right—will be featured on the program,
representing Harlem RBI, a baseball,
softball, and academic enrichment
organization that helps inner-city youth
develop leadership and academic skills,
and prepare for college and career.
Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of
WNET, interviewed Teixeira at Harlem RBI
headquarters earlier this summer. “We're
really saving these kids' lives,” Teixeira
said. “Many of these kids are going to
drop out of school. They don't necessarily
have a future we would like them to have.
Harlem RBI gives these kids a future."
“Education is at the heart of what
we do at THIRTEEN, so we’re especially
proud that American Graduate Day has
made such a profound impact in our own
community and across the country,” says
Shapiro. “We’re looking forward to connecting with communities as we continue
to work together to create brighter futures
for the next generation of champions.”
According to Carole Wacey, Vice President of Education at WNET, American
Graduate Day 2013 will emphasize college
and career readiness to prepare students
for life after high school. “Building on the
success of last year’s event, we will focus
on helping students develop skills that
will assist them as they transition from
high school graduates to college and to
be active citizens in their community,”
she said.
American Graduate Day is part of “American Graduate:
Let’s Make it Happen,” a public media initiative made
possible by CPB to help students stay on the path to
graduation and future success.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (pictured
above), Boys & Girls Club of America,
City Year, Harlem RBI, Horizons
National, and United Way are just a few
of the many Community Partners participating in American Graduate Day
this year. Are you ready to become an
American Graduate Champion?
Here’s what some of last year’s
champions had to say:
“I have been searching for a meaningful way to serve young people in
my community. Thank you for the
opportunity to connect in my community and for all you do, all the time.”
–Madeline, New York
“As an educator, I see many students
at the elementary level who are at
risk for dropping out in high school.
American Graduate gives me hope
we can turn this crisis around.”
–Laura, New Mexico

THIRTEEN produced a poster with information about The Hollow Crown and facts about Shakespeare’s
plays that was sent to 20,000 high schools.
Great Performances: The Hollow Crown
Fridays, Sept 20th—Oct 11th, 9 p.m.
Earlier this year, Shakespeare
Uncovered revealed the fascinating stories
behind Shakespeare’s plays. This month,
THIRTEEN brings you another opportunity
to brush up your Shakespeare with The
Hollow Crown, a lavish new series from
Great Performances featuring large-scale
film adaptations of four of Shakespeare’s
best-loved history plays: Richard II, Henry
IV, Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V.
Directed by Rupert Goold (Richard
II), Richard Eyre (Henry IV, Parts I and
II), and Thea Sharrock (Henry V ), The
Hollow Crown features some of the most
celebrated Shakespearean actors of our
time. The Kings are played by Ben Whishaw,
Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston respectively, supported by a phenomenal cast
including Rory Kinnear, Patrick Stewart,
David Suchet (Masterpiece Mystery!’s
Poirot), and David Morrissey in Richard
II; Simon Russell Beale, Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Julie Walters,
and Maxine Peake in Henry IV; and John
Hurt, Anton Lesser, and Paterson Joseph
in Henry V.
David Horn, executive producer of
Great Performances, says, “The Hollow
Crown continues our commitment to
bringing exceptional Shakespeare performances to the series, following our recent
productions of King Lear, Hamlet, and
Macbeth, and most recently, Shakespeare
Uncovered, which featured tantalizing
clips from these very productions which
we’re now so pleased to be showing in full.”
Major funding for Great Performances is provided by the Irene Diamond Fund, The Starr Foundation, Vivian
Milstein, Rosalind P. Walter, the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust, The Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, Joseph
A. Wilson, Jody and John Arnhold, The Agnes Varis Trust, and PBS.

Beyond the broadcast
“All the world’s a stage,” Shakespeare famously wrote in As You Like It. At
THIRTEEN, all the world’s a classroom. When programs air, it’s just the beginning
of the possibilities for dynamic learning made possible by THIRTEEN’s Education
Department at no cost to users.
vital resources
VITAL NY (Video in Teaching and
Learning; vitalnypbslearningmedia.org)
is one of the most comprehensive ways
THIRTEEN makes public media’s trusted,
high-quality content available to educators, parents, and students in the tri-state
area and across the country. A free digital education service offering more than
33,000 K-12 targeted media resources
tailored to our area’s curriculum requirements, VITAL NY engages students in
ways that text alone cannot.
More than 45,000 users in the region,
and close to one million nationwide, turn
to VITAL for classroom-ready lessons
that make learning memorable and fun,
while addressing challenges that often
derail students. Users can choose from
thousands of resources to make Shakespeare’s world come alive for learners of
all ages and enhance their experience of
The Hollow Crown.
As one New York City educator
observes, “The wealth of resources available at a click is amazing.”
Community Connections
The LAB@Thirteen is dedicated to finding
unique, creative ways to extend the reach
of our broadcasts into classrooms and communities all over the country via robust,
meaningful broadcast-based collaborations.
For The Hollow Crown, the LAB created 12 resources for VITAL NY and PBS
LearningMedia, and produced a free
poster with program information and
fascinating facts about Shakespeare’s
history plays that was sent to 20,000
high schools. The LAB also awarded five
PBS stations small community engagement grants to conduct local outreach
activities surrounding the broadcast of
The Hollow Crown and highlight local
Shakespeare theaters’ great work.
KOCE-TV, the PBS station in southern
California, is partnering with the Los
Angeles Drama Club, a children’s Shakespeare troupe, to connect with at-risk
youth in the area. WJCT in Jacksonville,
Florida, is teaming up with Theatre
Jacksonville, following up on their Shakespeare Uncovered screening that was
attended by 200 guests.
“It’s gratifying to see stations building on the success of Shakespeare
Uncovered and deepening their reach in
their communities,” says LAB director
Christopher Czajka. “It shows that Shakespeare is relevant, as is the work we do
at public media.”
“Artifacts of Shakespeare’s Time” is one of
the many VITAL NY resources teachers and
students can use to learn about Shakespeare.

American Masters:
Billie Jean King
Tue 10th, 8 p.m.
What was your career highlight, and is
there anything you would do differently?
I’m not anywhere near done with my
career, so I don’t think I have yet lived my
career highlight. Winning three World
TeamTennis titles and representing my
country as a player and Captain of the
Fed Cup teams will always be special
moments. There are a few things I would
have done differently. I wish I had not
quit playing singles in 1975. I still had
at least one good year of singles and
several strong competitive years of
doubles left in me.
What do you tell young players who ask
for your advice?
I would ask more questions than anything.
It is important for any player—young or
old—to hear their own voice and learn
to use their own voice. They need to be
part of the process and it always has
to be about them, not about the coach
or mentor.
Tennis legend Billie Jean King has long
been a champion for social change and
equality—both on and off the court. She
is the subject of a new American Masters
film commemorating the 40th anniversaries of the Billie Jean King v. Bobby
Riggs “Battle of the Sexes” match and the
founding of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). The series’ first portrait of a
sports figure, it features interviews with
King, Serena and Venus Williams, Hillary
Clinton, Sir Elton John, Chris Evert, Gloria
Steinem, and others.
In the following interview, King speaks
about her iconic career and American
Masters debut.
How do you feel about being featured
on American Masters?
In all honesty, I am still getting used to
it. The film is very revealing and brings
up so many pivotal moments in my life
that I am reliving some of it each time
I watch the film. It is gratifying to be
the first athlete profiled in the 27-year
history of the series, and as a woman and
a gay woman, I hope my story will inspire
others to live their truth.

American Masters is made possible by the support of the National Endowment for the Arts and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Additional funding for American Masters is provided by Rosalind P. Walter, Anne
Ray Charitable Trust, Cheryl and Philip Milstein Family, The Blanche & Irving Laurie Foundation, Rolf and Elizabeth
Rosenthal, Jack Rudin, The André and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation, Michael & Helen Schaffer Foundation, and
public television viewers.

Mission US
mission-us.org
“A Cheyenne Journey,”
the third Mission US history
game for teens, launches
at mission-us.org this September. Players become
Little Fox, a Northern
Cheyenne boy in 1866
whose life is changed by
the encroachment of white
settlers, railroads, and U.S.
military expeditions. As the
buffalo diminish and the
U.S. enforces the reservation system, players learn
about the persistence of
the Cheyenne.
