THE K.F.D. HOSER IS BACK
The last edition of The K.F.D. Hoser was produced in the Fall 2010 and as I
look back at Edition 1 Page 1 Winter 2002 over 10 years ago, I remember
when Bob Leppington approached me about the idea. I had already spent 10
years 1989 to 1999 writing articles for the City of Kitchener internal
newspaper The City Life. I had the pleasure of reading the Siren and Fire Fly
written by so many firefighters before me like Ken Smiley, Roy Lucas, Doug
McIntosh, Jim Taber, Terry Smith, Ford Vannatter, Doug Turner, Bob Bezeau,
Jim Lumchick, Jim Langton and all other members who submitted articles
over the years. It’s been in the past few years that I realized how important
this newsletter has become to update you the retirees of what is going on at
the KFD. I see Dave Schoenhals and others always asking when the next
edition is coming out and I am happy to say to Dave and the rest of you here
is the latest edition of the Hoser to update you of what’s happening at the
KFD. This would not be possible without the support of Chief Beckett and
help from Vicky Girimonte and Vesna Mitrovic
I’M WRITING A BOOK ON THE HISTORY OF THE
BERLIN-KITCHENER FIRE DEPARTMENT
After many years (25) being the Historian Curator for the KFD after it was
handed down to me by Larry Litt, John Divo and Dave Rosekat, I decided to
put my energy towards actually writing a published book on the History of
the Berlin-KFD. I met with Chief Tim Beckett and the President of the KPFFA
Steve Jones and got their blessing to do research towards the possibility of
having something in print which has never been done before. There have
been 14 published articles written on the History of the KFD as follows:
• August 1942 – (34th Annual Convention Dominion Association of Fire
Chiefs) - History of the K.F.D. by Chief Harry Guerin
• June 27, 1954 (The Kitchener-Waterloo Record) Beer and Prizes Played
Vital Role in Old Days by Jim Romahn
• July 31, 1954 (The Kitchener-Waterloo Record) Chasing Fires In the
Good Old Days by Alex O. Potter
• August 17, 1961 (The Waterloo Chronicle - Fire Chief’s Convention
August 21-24, 1961) History of Kitchener Fire Department By
Lieutenant W. M. Mattka Public Relations Officer KFD
• June 30, 1967 - History of the Kitchener Fire Department by Chief Ken
Putnam
• June 21, 1979 (The Kitchener-Waterloo Record) Fighting Fires Was a
Community Affair by Chief Edward (Ted) Johnston
• September 1979 (Recollections of 125 Years) – Community Protection
Fire Department by Chief Edward (Ted) Johnston
• March 1995 (Kitchener City Life) A Trip Down Fire Hall’s Memory Lane

I’M WRITING A BOOK ON THE HISTORY OF THE BERLIN-KITCHENER
FIRE DEPARTMENT- CONTINUED
• November 1995 (Kitchener City Life) The History of the K.F.D. by Tim Forsyth
• January 1996 (Kitchener City Life) Travel Back in Time – The K.F.D. History by Tim Forsyth
• November 2004 (The KFD Retiree Newsletter) Kitchener Fire Hall Bells by Chief Bert Kuntz
• November 2004 (The KFD Retiree Newsletter) Fire Bell Traditions by Chief Bert Kuntz
• August 25, 2008 (KFD Archives) History of the K.F.D. Fire Stations by Tim Forsyth
• November 2010 (KFD Hoser Retiree Newsletter) History of K.F.D. Apparatus by Tim Forsyth
I received encouragement to continue with gaining history knowledge early in my career from Chief
Jim Hancock who put me in contact with Cambridge Fire Department’s Historian Curator Jim
Westwood. With the continued support of Chief Bert Kuntz, Chief Rob Browning and now Chief Tim
Beckett, I was able to maintain the integrity of the KFD history by having an office at the new HQ.
This has allowed me to continue collecting artifacts that are stored in the KFD history room as well
continuing my research over the years. I am very fortunate to have as a mentor local historian Rych
Mills who has written a few books. He has given me advice and pointed me in the right direction. I
have spent many hours at the Kitchener Public Library doing research looking at 1800’s newspaper
articles and collecting pictures from the Grace Schmidt room. I have done interviews with Chief
Harry Guerin’s daughter Olive, Chief Phillip Karn’s relatives and spent a wonderful afternoon with
Helen Smiley looking over pictures and newspaper clippings. My research has taken me right to the
beginning with the 1850’s mention of volunteer fire brigades. The KFD History Department has early
documentation of the Hook and Ladder Company in 1864 as well as the Berlin Fire Brigade 1888. You
will find enclosed a return envelope with an information sheet. I would appreciate any help you can
give me in my research for the book. I am also willing to come and visit you to scan pictures you
might feel would be useful in my research as well as any other items you might have that would be of
interest for others to see. You can contact me at home 519-578-1843, my cell 519-503-8563 or my
email: [email protected].
Why Are Fire Trucks Red?
The most widely-accepted reason that fire engines are painted red dates back to the 1800’s, a time
when there was a LOT of competition between fire brigades of neighbouring cities and towns. The
firefighters of each brigade took great pride in their pump. Each brigade wanted their rig to stand out
by being the cleanest, having the most brass or being a
regal colour. Because red was the most expensive
colour, that’s what colour most crews chose to paint the
pump. Other sources cite the tradition of painting fire
engines red going back to the early 1920’s. Henry Ford
wanted to make cars as inexpensively as possible and
only offered cars in one colour: black. With all of these
black vehicles on the road, the fire service began
painting their vehicles red in an effort to stand out. Red
is a colour instantly recognized by everyone as that of a
fire engine.

ACTING CAPTAINS
The KFD entered into
article 11:02 of the
Collective Agreement
that allows successful
firefighters who pass
the captains process to
be promoted to the
rank of Acting Captain.
This allows firefighters
to maintain their 1st
class firefighter status
but when manning
requires a captain to
fill in, rather than
calling in a captain on
overtime, the firefighter
who is working that
shift and is on the
Acting Captain list
becomes the captain
for the time required.

WHAT’S NEW AT THE
K.F.D.?
1. The KFD entered into a
five year agreement in
2012 to the end of 2016
running a 24 hour shift. A
platoon works a 24, off for
2 days, works another 24
and off for 4 days.
2. Waterloo Region was
one of a very few EMS to
be involved in the ROC
(Resuscitation Outcomes
Consortium) study.
Starting December 5, 2011
two phases were involved.
Initially the KFD was
involved in the intervention
phase of the study which
included Constant Chest
Compression (CCC) for
those patients meeting the
criteria. CCC was done with
no stoppage for airway
intervention which was
also done during CPR. The
study concluded in 2013
and results are still
pending.
3. Jan 2012 City Council
reduced minimum staffing
from 37 to 35 before extra
duty can be utilized. When
staffing drops to 36 and
below: Aerial 4 moves to
Station 7 and becomes the
front line response
apparatus for Station 7 and
Pump 7 comes out of
service. July 1, 2012 Aerial
4 now moves to Station 6
rather than 7.
4. Feb 15/12 EMS-TIF
(Emergency Medical
Service Technology
Infrastructure Framework)
or Simultaneous
Notification started at the
KFD. The CAAC and KFD
Cad system are interfaced
so tiered response calls are
received at the same time.
5. July 31/12 KFD started
using Drager PSS 7000
SCBA’s.
6. Jan 2013 City Council
reduced KFD Suppression
Division by four firefighters
through attrition.
7. Jan 2013 survey of
Kitchener residents 96%
was happiest with the fire
service.
8. All KFD Trucks equipped
with EMTRAC Emergency
Vehicle Preemption which
replaces the antiquated
Opticom. Radio frequency
will be used in the future.

$250,000.00
THE HISTORY OF THE KPFFA CALENDAR
Who could have imagined the birth of a calendar in 1991 would grow to raise over a quarter of a
million dollars for children charities. Looking back to 1991, I remember working A2 Platoon, Station
4 for Captain Herman Beerthuis. He had just come back from Edmonton and pitched the idea to our
crew about producing a calendar for the purpose of raising money for charities while having a lot of
fun. The next thing we knew the 1992 KPFFA Calendar Committee was formed consisting of Herman
Beerthuis, Jim Taber, Phil Elker, Bob Tilt and myself Tim Forsyth. We had no idea what we were
doing or getting ourselves into but luckily Lee Raftis joined our committee later as he had
experience being in his former fire departments calendar before joining the KFD. As seen below the
entire 1992 KPFFA Calendar Committee. We used the 1991 North York Firefighters Calendar as our
template and our first task was to sell two ads per page for $500 each for a total of $12,000 to
offset the cost of printing, which we did with no problem. We booked the Valhalla Inn Ballroom to
host the calendar contest with no idea what the public response would be. We approached Tom
Gural of Cober printing getting advice what the photographer needed to do as well as the layout we
should use. The Studio Photography Guelph donated their time towards our charity. We talked about
different charities and made an agreement that all KPFFA calendars would donate money towards
children charities in our area. We contacted the KW Record and spent an afternoon talking to a
reporter about all the good things this calendar would do and next day the headlines read
“Firefighters Will Pose Shirtless to Assist Charity”. I was furious that the KW Record had labeled us
as a “Beef-Cake Calendar” but Herman just laughed and said “Mikey look at all the free publicity
they just gave us, women will be dying to see the contest
now”! Herman was right. The calendar contest took place May
23, 1991 in the Valhalla Inn Ballroom which only held 500
people. I remember our volunteers working the front door
approaching me and informing me we have women gate
crashing the event saying “try and stop me from getting in”.
There wasn’t much we could do except let them in. We were
way over capacity but thank goodness we knew the right
people so we didn’t get busted. The popularity of the event set
the stage that we needed a bigger venue for the following year
so we moved it to Lulu’s. So after the contest we proceeded to
the next stage. We worked with the photographer and pictures
were taken, it went to print and the rest is history. The 1992
calendar proved to be the most popular of all produced.

MEDIA!
As seen below Alf Bailey is getting prepared for his March 1992 calendar shot. Lighting, makeup,
fire scenes and yes shirtless firefighters were the ingredients for a successful calendar. Any free
media press we could get, also helped generate sales of the calendar. Bob Gilmore, Cindy Jankura,
Kathy Becht and Guy Burkholder helped promote the 1993 calendar. Chris Van Bargen helped
promote the 1999 calendar. Pete Weber, Tim Forsyth, Doug Wendorf, Bonnie Reinhardt, Randy Kalan
and Kathy Becht are featured in the 1999 calendar poster used for advertising the event. Russell
Rodrigues holds the record for most appearances in the calendar 1999, 2003 and 2006. Sherry
Waddell was the first female firefighter to appear in the calendar 1995. I managed to talk Kathy
Becht into joining me behind the scenes for every calendar ever produced before her retirement.

CONTESTS
The calendar contest was moved to Lulu’s world’s longest (340ft) bar to accommodate over 2500
screaming females in a 75,000 sq ft building. No one was prepared for what we witnessed. It was like
a Tom Jones concert with women throwing pieces of their garments on stage. The acts became more
professional with theatrics, music, special effects, lighting and yes sex appeal. Lulu’s closed its doors
for good April 9, 2000. Different locations were used to accommodate the huge request for tickets.

$47,500.00
1992 Calendar Committee: Herman Beerthuis, Tim Forsyth, Lee Raftis, Phil Elker, Jim Taber, Bob Tilt. Photographer: William
Knetsch & Catherine McNabb – The Studio. Printer: Cober Printing. Contest MC: Jeff Hutcheson. Location: Valhalla Inn. Charity:
The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. Money Raised: $47,500.00. The photographs were posed shots, that’s the way it was
done back then. No trick photography or computer enhancements. Each shot captured the life of a firefighter. I remember
Herman had this great idea so we all hopped on P4 and went to the Chicopee Ski Lodge parking lot with a metal pan and some
diesel fuel. Herman lines us up as seen on the cover shot of the 1992 calendar; I’m on the nozzle, Phil Elker, Jim Taber, Bob Tilt
and Herman on the radio calling in this huge fire! The funny thing about that shot was regardless how hard we tried; we couldn’t
get the flames any higher than one foot. We were very proud of our first calendar. It walked off the shelves; we sold out after
doing an additional 3 extra printings. You will also notice this was also the last year of our blue dress shirts as our uniform.

1993 Calendar Committee: Brian Forbes, Tim Forsyth, Kathy Becht, Randy Kalan, Mike Zarzycki, Cindy Jankura, Linda Zmija,

MC: Jeff Hutcheson. Location: Lulu’s. Charity: The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, Central Ontario Development Riding
Program – (Andrea Burkholder) – Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Canada (Andrea Barrett). Money Raised: $47,400.00. $12,000 in
advertisements were sold again. I dedicate the 1993 Calendar to Cindy Jankura who lost her life too early. We knew we had a
hit with the public, especially the women so we had to move to Lulu’s to accommodate over 2500 screaming women at the
contest. Brian Forbes was ingenious getting a computer wizard to take a picture of 5 Dalmatians on the antique truck and
superimposing the remaining 43 dogs. Bob Gilmores picture was also computer magic. The 1993 calendar featured a father son
team with Larry and Chris Litt. The calendar featured some very classy pictures and again the life of a firefighter.

1995 Calendar Committee: Brian Forbes, Tim Forsyth, Kathy Becht, Randy Kalan, Mike Zarzycki, Doug Sharp, Linda Zmija, Tom
O’Hara, Guy Burkholder, Jan Reyner. Photographer: Warrenmark Staff – Image Power Photography. Printer: Allprint Ainsworth
Printing. Contest MC: Jeff Hutcheson. Location: Lulu’s. Charity: Central Ontario Development Riding Program, Citizens
Concerned with Crimes Against Children, Waterloo Region Track Three, Waterloo Region Children’s Safety Village. Money
Raised: $34,000.00. We didn’t produce a calendar in 1994 because the Waterloo Fire Department wanted to try their hand at it
so we stepped aside so the market wasn’t saturated. 1995 saw drastic changes with the design (black & bronze) and the action
shots taken by Warrenmark. He did things we could not have imagined. I was at most of the shots like Darcy bouncing on a
trampoline while I threw bottles filled with gas against the wall to give the impression Darcy was being hurdled threw the air
from an explosion. I loved standing at the end of the runway of Toronto Pearson International Airport as jets flew over Chris’s
head as we waited for that perfect shot. John Pullman suspended in an area gravel pit, Randy’s car explosion, Sherry’s black
and white shot and Pat’s blue photo. Warrenmark brought life to the photos and came up with new action shots while still
keeping the life a firefighter incorporated into the calendar. This calendar was like no other with a wide variety of action shots.

Why a 4 year layoff? We noticed the novelty was wearing off, sales started to slow down because we had saturated the market
so we took a break. Once again Warrenmark amazed us with his eye for action shots and the way he made the magic work.
Airport shot again, Franz rescue shot with a car dangling on a cable to look like an explosion, Russell’s water rescue, Rick’s
CFB Trenton plane crash, Darryl’s father and son team, Scott’s hazmat suits, Jeff’s muscles, Paul’s rescue and Jim’s black &
white picture that became the picture the KFD used on their recruit brochures and other media releases. Once again
Warrenmark captured action along with the life of firefighter as seen in other pictures presented in the 1999 calendar.

KFD CHILDREN’S
CALENDAR
2000 Calendar Committee: Paul Cleve and Al Taylor. Photographer: Kim & Erik Star – Stars Photographic Art. Printer:
Allprint Ainsworth Printing. Charity: Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Grand River Hospital Foundation. The
calendar was the brain child of Al Taylor and Paul Cleve. They had over 70 firefighters children photographed in various
firefighter settings. I was brought on as an advisor and Paul and Al wrote: Special Thanks To Tim Forsyth for looking over
our shoulders and helping us to stay out of trouble. The expertise and knowledge passed on by you made the production
of this calendar so much easier. We couldn’t have done this without you. I was honoured to be a part of such a wonderful
and unique idea. The children had so much fun dressing up as firefighters and getting their picture taken with real fire
apparatus or equipment. The children’s names were left off the calendar for obvious reasons in today’s society. Money
was raised and passed onto the charities (amount unknown). I thought the calendar shot October 2000 was ingenious
with infants in the helmets as well as April 2000 the one child acting as Captain ready to teach, give instruction or
training to his crew for the day. All of the photographs show the life of a firefighter.
