“I firmly believe that childhood is a
treasure and this precious wealth
should be nurtured to grow in leaps and
bounds. Taking that forward, we are
proud to take up the onus of furthering
young minds in lines with the changes
in the approaches to education.”
M.V. Muthuramalingam,
Chairman.
Velammal Educational Trust.
“Transformation of the society should take place from the roots; only then can we soar into the
sky. Velammal is committed to play a key role in shaping the future of the world by grooming
future citizens. The endeavour is to set a path to systematic education with global relevance,
so that children are groomed to meet the challenges and emerge successful with a global
outlook”.
M.V.M. Velmurugan,
C.E.O
My long association in this field, and the research I have been
engaged in, has clearly shown that the first six years of a child’s life
are crucial, and that we have to see that optimal development is
ensured at this stage. In addition, a large part of the development
of the human brain occurs in the first five years of life. Stimulation
of the brain in the early years leads to the development and
enhanced learning capacities of the child. Early sensory inputs,
as well as, the expression of warmth are known to have a decisive
and long lasting influence on the child. Therefore in this period,
fulfilling physical needs, emotional security and appropriate
stimulation builds a sense of
basic trust and ensures lifelong
curiosity and a will to learn.
A good Early Childhood Education programme, for children aged
from 18 months to 5 1/2 years, has shown to have a positive effect
on children’s development when the curriculum is appropriately
structured, with a strong component of learning through play.
Suitable learning materials, child appropriate classrooms and
outdoor spaces provide a motivating environment that responds
sensitively to each child’s individual needs, and will stimulate their
curiosity while recognising their particular interests.
Therefore the curriculum for young children is to be designed to suit
their developmental needs, is child-centred and activity-based,
and of an enhanced quality and suited to diverse environments.
The educator, who interacts with the children all day long, must
help the children to see themselves as learners and feel that they
are noticed and their work valued.

THE CURRICULUM
An experience beyond skill-sets
Links to learning
The programme at Velammal Juniors addresses the needs of the children, it takes advantage of a child’s readiness to learn
with activities that are fun, challenging and engaging.
Links to Learning lends itself into different developmental stages comprising six developmental domains. At each stage of
the early year’s journey, educators introduce new concepts and skills while reviewing and re-enforcing existing skills.
Links to Learning
Learning Curriculum that looks beyond
Language & Literacy
Children begin communicating with people and systems, creating
and expressing meaning.
Numeracy
Children begin to recognise shapes, colours and numbers through
toys, games and basic puzzles and begin to make sense of their daily
encounters that involve mathematics.
Discovery of the World
Children show interest in the world they live in and explore the world
through experiential learning.
Personal and Social Awareness
Children develop confidence to change, adapt and develop new skills.
Aesthetic and Creative expression
Children learn to express ideas and feelings through art, music and
movement.
Motor skill Development
Children participate in regular fun and vigorous physical activities
leading to developing physical strength and endurance.
THE LEARNING CURVE
☺ The whole curriculum is structured into “themes”.
☺ The themes are inter-related linking the curriculum with basic developmental objectives.
☺ Project-based learning is part of the curriculum. The teacher and the children select a topic based on the interest of
the children. Using the KWL method of investigation, the theme may carry on for more than two months. This culminates
with a ‘project day’ for parents with documentations and displays on what the children have learnt.
The themes and projects aim and support the child’s smooth transition from the informal to the formal schooling portals.
Teaching and learning material
‘T is for Themes’ is specially prepared set of books for the
Kindergarten. This has been upgraded to suit the recent universal
curriculum.
The books are specially designed for the purpose of developing
pre-reading, pre-writing, pre-numeracy, creative thinking and
reasoning skills. The ‘T’ Series with colourfully illustrated picture
books and creative activity books form a part of our teaching
and learning material. Creative activity and crafts books
complement the series.
Phonetic readers help children read using the multi-sensory
approach which is complimented with writing sheets.
To make children understand and comprehend numbers
and math concepts, the Senior Kindergarten have specially
designed math activity sheets.

‘AN EXPERIENCE BEYOND THE FOUR WALLS’- FIELD TRIPS
To bring the classroom to life and to provide real-time experiences that support the curriculum, Velammal Juniors organises
field trips and educational tours as part of the learning journey.
Education is effective only when all the senses are put to use. The curriculum of Velammal Juniors stresses on the inquiry
of the mind, and the value of new experiences to its learners. It aims to provide challenging opportunities for children
to explore new horizons by experiencing real life and real work environments. Teachers guide the children during these
planned experiential tours and explain the importance of nature and their surroundings. Children undertake little projects
and build on the knowledge by exploring and constructing information, skills and knowledge.
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT TO SHOW THE
CHILDREN’S PROGRESS
A child friendly assessment helps the teacher and the parents understand the child’s interests and talents. This is not
merely a record of the child’s academic achievement, but also the reflections of his/her development of sense of self and
understanding of the world, which requires credit and encouragement. The continuous and comprehensive assessment
helps to reflect and evaluate the all-round potential of the child. A portfolio is maintained with the child’s achievements.
A PARTNERSHIP WITH PARENTS
An orientation is conducted in the beginning of the year followed each term with seminars and meetings. The families are
encouraged to participate in the child’s learning on special events, like grandparent’s day and sports day.
Open communication about the child’s learning experiences are shared with the parents effectively.
