Morningside College - Western Iowa Tech Community College
2014-2015Transfer Guide
The transfer guide is designed to help WITCC students who wish to transfer to Morningside College identify
WITCC courses that meet Morningside College’s general studies requirements. It also identifies some of
the more common majors students transfer into and suggests courses students may take at WITCC for the
most efficient transfer to Morningside College.
Admission Requirements
Transfer students must:
1) Complete an application for admission (online at www.morningside.edu or a paper version).
2) Submit official grade transcript from high school (or evidence of GED).
3) Submit official grade transcripts from ALL colleges attended.
Transfer students who have earned at least 24 transferable semester hours with a 2.25 or better transfer
GPA meet the academic standards for automatic admission. Transfer students with less than 24
transferable semester hours must defer to the admission requirements for high school seniors and firstyear students.
Transfer of Credit
A maximum of 62 semester hours from regionally accredited two-year community or junior colleges may be
transferred to Morningside College, of which no more than 16 semester hours of technical/vocational
courses will be accepted toward a baccalaureate degree. Exception: Students enrolled in the Degree
Completion Program for Registered Nurses may transfer a maximum of 94 credits to Morningside College
from two-year community or junior colleges.
A maximum of 94 semester hours may be transferred from regionally accredited four-year colleges or
universities, or from a combination of regionally accredited two-year community or junior colleges and fouryear colleges or universities.
General Studies: The following equivalency listing shows courses that have been approved by the
Morningside College Registrar as meeting Morningside’s current Distribution and Flag (general studies)
requirements. There may be additional courses that meet the Distribution and Flag requirements.
Students may inquire about course equivalencies by contacting Morningside College’s Transfer Counselor.
Major, Minor, Clusters and Elective Courses: Courses submitted for transfer credit for major or minor
programs or clusters must be equivalent in methods, subject matter, level of instruction, and requirements
to Morningside College courses. The Registrar will determine equivalency in consultation with the Provost
and the chairs of the academic departments involved as necessary. Courses submitted as transfer credit
for open electives are not subject to the “equivalency test.” They are, however, subject to approval by the
Provost and the Registrar.
Non-Traditional Credit: Morningside College recognizes that students can gain valuable knowledge
through experiences outside of the regular classroom setting. For this reason, Morningside will grant a
maximum of 32 semester hours of credit toward a baccalaureate degree based on performance in the
following areas: Advanced Placement through the high school, College Level Examination Program
(CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Academic Credit for College Equivalent Learning (ACCEL),
correspondence, electronic credit, and military credit.

BIOLOGY (Bachelor of Science; Bachelor of Arts)
Morningside College’s biology major prepares the student for a broad range of career paths, from medicine to
conservation biology. Morningside students receive a solid foundation for graduate and professional schools, and
develop an understanding of scientific methods, practical application of concepts, and development of field and
laboratory skills. State-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms provide students with hands-on work experiences and
interactive learning. Students have gone on to succeed in graduate and professional programs in health sciences
(medicine, physician’s assistant, physical therapy, etc…), or have entered the workforce as conservation officers,
naturalists, high school science teachers, laboratory technicians, sales representatives, and science writers.

Students majoring in chemistry will have career opportunities in chemical industries working with anything from paper to
plastics, pharmaceuticals to fertilizers, or paints to fabrics. Less obvious careers include food science, patent law,
forensic science, art restoration, health science, education, and product testing. Morningside College students develop
a solid foundation in chemical theory, sound experimental techniques, and strong communication skills in scientific
writing and speech. Chemistry, combined with a selection of biology courses, is a strong preparation for graduate or
professional schools in health sciences.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (Bachelor of Science)
Morningside College has a long history and well-established reputation for producing outstanding educators. The
program is fully approved by the Iowa Department of Education. Its emphasis is on being an “effective educator” – a
caring professional who enables people to develop the knowledge, skills, and disposition necessary to participate in a
democratic society. The elementary education major requires a concentration in an endorsement area such as
Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, Coaching, etc. In partnership with area school districts,
students spend time observing in schools, serving as teacher aides, assisting teachers in preparing materials, and
preparing and implementing lesson plans. These multiple and early-on field experiences prepare students for a
successful student teaching experience.

Notes:
REL 101 Survey of World Religions meets two general studies requirements: Religious Traditions and Ethics &
Personal Values.
Students should choose a biology-lab course to meet both Morningside’s Empirical Reasoning requirement and a
teacher licensure requirement. Students who are also interested in a coaching endorsement are encouraged to take
WITCC’s BIO 169 Human Anatomy & Physiology instead of BIO 105 Introductory Biology as it meets Morningside’s
Empirical Reasoning requirement, a licensure requirement, and a requirement for Morningside’s coaching
endorsement.
After transferring to Morningside College students must make formal application to the Teacher Preparation Program.

ENGLISH (Bachelor of Arts)
English is a discipline that investigates the creative potential of literacy in our world and in the rich tradition of the
English language arts. Small classes offer our students the opportunity to be creative and energetic in their
explorations of language arts. Friday is Writing Day and The Sioux City Reading Series are just a couple of ways for
students and faculty to develop and share their abilities with the campus community. Students have the option to
pursue an emphasis in writing, literature, or secondary English teaching. Students majoring in English have pursued
various professional career paths, such as teaching, journalism, law, editing and publishing, business management,
marketing, government work, librarianship, the ministry, English as a Second Language, social services, public
relations, and human relations.

MASS COMMUNICATION (Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts)
Emphasis areas of Media & Sales Management, Corporate Communication, New Media Production
Minors in Journalism, Electronic Media Production, Sports Broadcasting
The mass communication major prepares students for careers in mass media and educates them about the role of
mass communication in society through a variety of learning experiences, including classroom study, applied work with
campus media, and internships with radio and television stations, public relations and corporate communication
departments, newspapers, magazines and on-line media.
The Mass Communication general degree is designed for students who are interested in producing mass media
messages while mastering the production skills in more than one medium. It offers emphasis areas in journalism and
sports broadcasting. The Media & Sales Management emphasis combines studies in mass communication with
business administration. Valuable experience is gained through managing student media such as KMSC radio, MCTV,
and the Collegian Reporter. The Corporate Communication emphasis combines studies in mass communication,
graphic design and business administration. It prepares students for positions in external and internal communication
in business, government, political, and non-profit organizations. The New Media Production emphasis combines studies
in mass communication with art and computer science. It is designed to give students both the technical and creative
background to work in online and other new media fields, such as web-design.
