THE HISTORY
M
OULTONBOROUGH, New Hampshire. What a beautiful part of the
Granite State we are living in. All that nature has to offer we have. On
the northerly side of town the Ossipee mountains; the southerly boundary is
Lake Winnipiseogee (Winnipesaukee) with its sixty-five miles of town
shoreline and nestled between the many forests, fields, streams and ponds to
make one realize that He abounds in splendor.
Our scenic town was granted on November 17, 1763 for the purpose of
"promoting the settlement of the Country" and was known as Moultonborough. On November 24, 1777 the town of Moultonborough was incorporated and received its name in honor of Colonel Jonathan Moulton. From
this date the legal and civil proceedings of the town commenced, although for
several years much of its business was transacted at the proprietors' meetings
in Hampton.
A peninsula known as Moultonborough Neck extends seven miles from the
main road into Lake Winnipiseogee. On the south side of this neck, five miles
from the main road, is a narrow channel of the lakes which divides it from an
island three miles in length and one in width, known as Long Island. This
island was annexed to the town of Moultonborough on December 30, 1799.
The "Neck" and Long Island was purely a farming territory, and constitutes
the best part of the town. The island is connected with the mainland by a
bridge. It is a high elevation of land, a sort of promontory, which commands a
complete view of the lake and is a great resort for summer tourists, not only for
the beauty of the scenery, but to get the benefit of the salubrity of the atmosphere. There was a commodious steamboat landing on the south side of
the island, where steamers stopped daily during the season on their regular
trips from Alton Bay to Centre Harbor and the Weirs. Mr. Brown's farm, near
the lower point of the island, is noted for having extensively produced the
"King Philip" corn, yielding one hundred bushels of shelled corn to the acre.
Red Hill is almost wholly in this town, only a small part of the northern portion being in Sandwich. It is one range, running northwest and southeast. The
highest peak, North Hill, is 2029 feet above the sea. The southern base of the
mountain is but two miles from Lake Winnipiseogee, its northern base bordering on Squam Lake, its western one washed by Long Pond (Lake Kanasatka),
and its eastern side skirted by Red Hill River.
The southerly side and summit of Ossipee Mountain are largely in Moultonborough. The highest peak, formerly called "Black Snout" was, at the annual
town meeting of 1882 named "Mount Shaw", by vote of the town in honor of
Mr. B.F. Shaw who operated Ossipee Park in that area. This peak is 2,973 feet
above the sea, and from it is seen a magnificent view that includes Casco Bay,

Portland, Saco and many other places in Maine, the White Mountains, Kearsarge, Whiteface, the Sandwich Range, and Ossipee and Winnipiseogee lakes
in New Hampshire.
There are many indications of Indian occupancy and several Indian relics have
been found. Some Indian cellars are yet visible on the borders of the streams,
all carefully stoned and about eight feet square. The Ossipee tribe of Indians
was located between Ossipee Lake and the northern shore of Lake Winnipiseogee. There was communication between the Ossipees and the early
settlers previous to the settlement of the town and there is a legend that Lt.
John Chamberlain, one of Lovewell's officers in the Pequawket Battle of 1725
made his escape from Paugus with a single leap of some fifteen feet across
Ossipee Falls. The only one of the redmen to try the leap fell to his death on the
rocks below. This falls is now known as "Falls of Song" and is a cascade that
falls nearly perpendicular over a solid ledge of seventy feet in height. It is conjectured that this region was once a place of concealment for the Ossipee tribe.
The first legal town meeting was held March 31, 1778 and the annual town
meeting each March since has sparked many contests for public office and
ways of operating the town.
East Moultonborough was that part of the town first settled by the early
proprietors. This is the "Three Bridges" area and where present route 109 and
171 intersect. It was here they located the first Meetinghouse and established
their first minister. Built in 1773, between the cemetery and Shaw Homestead
at the junction of 109 and 171, this Meetinghouse was used until it was blown
down in the severe gale of 1819. Another was soon erected. For various causes
the Congregational Church became extinct and the Meetinghouse at East
Moultonborough was sold to the Adventists and removed by rollers and ox
teams to Melvin Village.
There were some six or eight families that pitched on a plot of land about half
way up the South slope of Ossipee Mountain. The Lee family was one of the
earliest having settled their place in 1748 and five generations of the Lee family
lived in the house until it was sold in 1913 and they moved to Moultonborough
Falls on the Sheridan Road. This is the area that is now known as "Castle in
the Clouds."
At a later period Moultonborough Falls became the center of trade with three
stores, two hotels, a tannery, curriers shop, a blacksmith, a gristmill, sawmill,
carding and fulling mill, a sleigh and carriage maker, a saddle and harness
maker, a printing office and shoe shops. This place has, however, like East
Moultonborough lost its life and activity with the changing patterns of life.
Moultonborough Corner is now the principal business place. Another
meetinghouse was erected at the corner, soon after 1840. This was the
Methodist society and has since been occupied by that church. One needs only
to look around as they pass through the center of town to understand that
Moultonborough is still a thriving community.
From these few previous paragraphs it is hoped that one can become aware of
the scenic beauty that attracted the early settlers to this area, by viewing the
areas of which we have spoken and discovering for oneself the many more
spots of beauty that have been laid before us to see, if only we open our eyes to
His way.

as follows viz Beginning at the North Easterly Corner of a Tract of Land, granted
by the said Proprietors to Samuel Palmer Esq & others on the Northerly Shore of
Winnepisseoky Pond, thence Running North Westerly by said Tract of land of
said Palmer & others to the Curve or head line of Masons Patent so called, thence
North Easterly as the said Curve line run's, so far as that a Strait line, drawn
from that Period to the North West or upper Corner of a tract of Land Granted
by said Proprietors to Col John Tufton Mason Esq will Contain within that & the
other lines a tract of Land equal to Six Miles Square, and from the said North
Corner of said Masons Tract, to run by the said Tract of Land to said Pond, then
by the shores of the Pond, Including a Neck & Point of Land, running into the
Pond until it Comes to the Place where the said Bounds begins, To have and to
hold the said Granted Premises to the said Persons above Named as Grantees,
their Heirs & Assigns, in Equal Shares Excepting and Reserving as is hereafter
Declared on the following Terms, Limitation, & Conditions viz. That the whole
Tract of Land, within the said Boundaries, excepting what shall be necessary for
highways & other Public and Common uses, be divided and Laid out into Eighty
two shares, & each Share into two Seperate Lots, within Seven Months from the
Date hereof & that twenty of said Shares be & hereby is Reserved for the use of
the Grantors the said Proprietors, their Heirs & Assigns—
That the said Grantees at their own Expence & Charge, Settle said Tract of
Land, twenty Families with Suitable Houses for their Dwelling within one Year
from the Date hereof & that the Persons so Settled be proceeding in Clearing and
Cultivating said Land or that part thereof on which they shall be Settled, and fifteen Families more within two Years from said Date, and fifteen Families more
within three Years from said Date, with houses as aforesaid, and making Improvement in Clearing & Cultivatin said Land, & Ten families more all as
aforesaid, within four Years from that time—That a Meetinghouse for the Public
Worship, be built on some Suitable Spot within said Tract of Land within three
Years from said Date, and preaching of the Gospel duly Supported and Maintain'd Constantly within Six Years from said time. That land be duly left between
the Ranges of the Lots of Land so to be laid out of the Breadth of four rods for
highways, and between the Lots of Land for ways of the Breadth of two Rods, and
at the End of the high Ways at the Pond Suitable Lots or Parcells of Land shall
be left for Landing places, at least half an Acre at the End of each high way and
as many such high ways Shall be laid out, to the Pond as said Tract of Land will
admit, That the reserved Shares be Exempted & freed of any charge and Duty of
Settlement untill Actually Improved in whole or in part—That this tract of Land
be accepted in Lieu and in stead of that tract of land voted by said Proprietor to
be granted to Ephraim Marston alias Major Jonathan Moulton, and Associates,
and is Meant & Intended by the Grantors so to be and the Grantees in this Grant
shall have and hold the same on that Condition, and such proposed Grant is
hereby Declared by the mutual agreement of all Parties to be Satisfied by this
Grant which is made instead thereof—That as there may be a Conveniency to the
Owners of each Share to have a part and Proportion in the Neck & point of Land
aforesaid with other Good land A djacent there shall be just Proportion thereof appropriated & laid out to every Share of said Tract of Land so as to make the
shares Equal having Regard to Quantity and Quality of the Land—
That all White Pine trees, growing on said Tract of Land fit for his Majesty's use
be & hereby is Reserved for that Intent & purpose—That the said Tract of Land
shall be laid out as aforesaid in two lots to each Share and a Plan thereof made &
returned within Nine Months each lot to be well mark'd on the land, and the Lots
that belong to each Share be mark'd with the same Number, the same to be made
as just & Equal as may be, and that the same be drawn for here in Portsmouth by
the Grantors or under their Discretion—That the right of such Grantees in said
Tract of Land as shall Neglect to pay their Proportion of all Charges, Taxes, and
Expences as the same shall be Necessary and Demanded the Right of such
Negligent & Delinquent Person shall be & hereby is Declared to be forfeited to
the other said Grantees. That three of the said reserved Shares be for Publick
uses, viz. One for the first Minister of the Gospell that shall be Settled on said
Tract of Land, & Continue there untill regularly Dismist, another for the use of
the Ministry, the other for the use & toward the Support of a Publick School
there forever—Provided further that in case of failure of performing the Conditions aforesaid on the part of the Grantees, the said Grantors shall and may
herebv enter into the said Premises in part in the name of the whole, or into the
whole, & the said Grantees wholly to Remove, oust & Expel—
