Ottavio Bottecchia was born the 1th August 1894 in Borgo San Martino di Colle Umberto, Treviso.
Since he was a young boy, Ottavio partecipated to prize competitions and, in one of it, he won a
golden watch to gained the first position. Enlisted at the beginning of the first Big War, he was
engaged in a special team: “esploratori d’assalto”, he was equipped with folding bikes and rewarded
for his actions, as he obtained the bronze medal to military valour.Teodoro Carnielli, owner of a small
bicycles industry and president of “Associazione Sportiva di Vittorio Veneto”, was the first who give
him a racing bike as a present; and he sent the champion to the directors of “Sport Union of
Pordenone”, where he started to gain the first successes.
The eleventh edition of “Giro d’Italia” was won from Costante Girardengo, but Ottavvio Bottecchia
was fifth in the general classification and first in the isolated classification. Thanks to Giro d’Italia he
became for the press “best man in the race” and obtained the first contract with Aldo Borella of
Automoto french house. With him he take part to Tour de France in the same year. We are in 1923
and since the end of the first leg there is a surprise: at the end of 381 km from Paris to Le Havre,
Bottecchia is in second place out of 200 and more participants. The french fans acclaim at him:
“Bottescià Bottescià! “.
The french reporters proclaim the italian champion daily.
Tour de France ended and Bottecchia gained the second place.
In 1924, Bottecchia was on his best conditions, he rode on his bike without any effort in every slope,
the breath was perfect and his mood very high. The 22nd of July the first page of “Gazzetta dello
Sport” write in enormous letters: “Bottecchia triumplhy win Tour de France and gain the aim which
the best routiers in vain followed for 20 years”.
Bottecchia is not only the first italian who win the famous french competition, but also the
first cyclist who wore the yellow t-shirt from the first to the final leg. The next year, at the end
of twentieth Tour de France, only 49 cyclist out of 130 participants, come back to Parc des
Princes, and Bottescià is first with more than 54 minutes on Lucine Buysse. Once again in Paris,
Bottecchia become a champion and the italian sport is at its maximum level.
At 10.30 am of 15th june 1927, when he was only 33 years old, Bottecchia die in a hospital at
Gemona del Friuli, after 13 days of agony, in mysterious circumstances.

1909, Teodoro Carnielli from Vittorio Veneto is a craftsman, he repairs and constructs bikes. He
firstly supports and than become President of Local Bikes Association, and immediatly recognise
the enormous talent of Ottavio Bottecchia.
After having consecreted the young Ottavio Bottecchia on “Bici Automoto”, Carnielli ask him to take
advantage of the magic moment by producing one Bottecchia bike. During the years, the small
Carnielli workshop becomes an industry; between 1930 and 1940 there are about 100 workers who
construct Bottecchia bikes, Trionfo and Vittoria motorbike. There is a lot of quantity and a big
variety of Bottecchia bikes; however the most important product is the race model. Teodoro
Carnielli, more and more enthusiastic of race competitions, starts to promote some cyclists which
use Bottecchia bikes.
On 1951 Guido Carnielli has a big idea: to create a bike that can be used standing still, helpful for
physical rehabilitation: it is the first CYCLETTE in the world.
At the beginning of sixties, Guido has another revolutionary idea. In Italy this is the period of
economic boom and more and more people has the possibility to buy a car. From here the idea of a
folding bike, with small wheels, which can be transportated in a car. To produce that model,
Carnielli bears a great economical effort. GRAZIELLA, whose name come from a newspaper which
firstly advertises it, was designed by Rinaldo Donzelli on 1963 and became a worldwide success.
At the end of sixties, the old Teodoro passes on the baton to his sons Guido and Mario. With
Bottecchia bikes they start agian to give merit to the cyclism and they will obtain other wins and
successes.

During the years there is a lot of Bottecchia cyclists and they obtain a lot of successes in
national and international races.
The most important wins are:
_ Giro d’Italia (1957, 1966, 1979);
_ Milano-Sanremo (1951);
_ Tirreno-Adriatico (1978);
_ Campionato Italiano (1964, 1965, 1966);
_ Campionato Italiano a Squadre (1954, 1967, 1978);
_ Campionato del Mondo (1966).

Among the most famous cyclists on Bottecchia team, there are: L. Robert, G. Nencini, G.
De Rosso, M. Cancelli, R. Altig, G. Motta, G.Saronni, G.B. Baranchelli, G. Le Mond.
In the mid-nineties, the current society takes over the brand, and move the firm from Vittorio
Veneto to Cavarzere (Venice).
This is the brand renaissance…it aims to the world market.
