Q2 2016 bulletin - Great Dane Club of America
Quarterly Bulletin ● 2016 ● Issue 3 ● August 2016
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dianne Powers
What’s Inside
Greetings Dane family,
President’s Message ....................................1 This summer has been quite the year for weather
issues. I hope this finds all of you holding strong
through fires, floods and unbearable heat. Fall is
coming….and along with it will be the 2016 National
being held at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel &
Convention Center in Tulsa, OK. The South Central
Division, under the leadership of Joyce Rowe and
Nancy Ridgway are preparing for a great show. Part
of that preparation is the inclusion in this Bulletin
(page 8) of an article written by Georgia Hymmen in
2014 about Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease
(CIRD). The information contained in that article is
invaluable in making certain our dogs are protected
in their travels. Please take the time to read it
through.
2016 National Specialty Update ...................... 1 We are also including in this issue the New OFAACVIM Advanced Cardiac Database information (page
34). The purpose of the changes is to provide a new
standard for cardiac exams. This new offering began
in April and carries a transition period for the
current cardiac database.
This information is
particularly important for clubs offering cardiac
clinics at their specialties as there are new
requirements for the Advanced Cardiac Database
exams.
At the July Board meeting in Denver the revisions
prepared by Nancy Ridgway’s committee (Nancy,
Lourdes Carvajal & Linda Cain) to the GDCA bylaws
were reviewed and approved. The revised bylaws
will be sent to the membership for your vote in the
near future. We also reviewed changes to the Top
20 program offered at the National. A committee
consisting of Linda Cain, Patrice Lawrence, Pat
Ciampa, Jessie & John Gerszewski, Kathy & Doug
Toomey, Bill Stebbins, Karen Martin & Denise
Matulich worked diligently to put together a new
look for the Top 20. This new program will be
presented at this year’s National so come take a look
at the new Top 20.
Travel safely to Tulsa….see you all soon
Danefully,
Dianne

Scot Billings, December 6th, 2015 (Rokadane,
Michigan). Scot Billings with his wife, Peg Billings,
bred brindle and fawn Great Danes under the name
Rokadane Kennels.
They began in the 1970’s,
venturing into the rings at dog shows in 1983. Their
first show dane was Ch. Tigroshka who finished her
American championship in 1984 and her Canadian
championship soon after that.
Their proudest

accomplishment was the career of Ch. Rokadane’s
Quincy (Butch) who was finished out of the Bred By
Exhibitor class by Peg. Scot also contributed to the
entire fancy by his annual ventures behind the
camera, supplying many years of candid photographs
from the GDCA Nationals. In a time before live feed
of videos, Scot’s photos were the only National that
many of us were able to experience, published in the
Great Dane Reporter. Scot and Peg were members of
the Great Dane Club of America and the Illini Great
Dane Club.
Larry W. Gaither, 1957 – 2015 (LaMar Great Danes,
Texas).
Together Larry and Margo Gaither
developed LaMar Great Danes, fawns and brindles in
Texas. Their top contenders were BISS Ch. Country
Walk Ends It With a Z (Sudz), Top Twenty Dane in
2000 & 2001) and BISS Ch. LaMar’s Sun of Dreamaker
AOE (Shadow), Top Twenty Dane in 2007 & 2008).
Larry was a member of the Great Dane Club of
America, The Great Dane Club of Houston, the
Alamo Great Dane Club and the Working Dog
Association.
Michele Manier, 1950 – 2016 (Sycamore, Illinois)
Michele Manier was known as both a professional
handler in the Midwest and a passionate Great Dane
enthusiast. She was often pictured in the Great
Dane magazines of the 80’s and 90’s, making a
beautiful presentation with her charges. Michele
was a member of the Illini Great Dane Club.
J. David Moore 1952 - 2016 ( Southern Star Great
Danes, Texas) For the last two decades, David
Moore and his wife, Sonya Harper Moore, bred fawn
Great Danes under the kennel name Southern Star,
in Jasper, Texas.
Their current special, Ch.
Southern Star Norse God Odin at Valhalla, a fawn
male, is being shown throughout the eastern United
States by Doug Toomey. David’s wife, Sonya Harper
Moore, is a member of the Great Dane Club of
America.
Trudy Muller 1935 – 2016, (Dagon Great Danes,
Illinois) Trudy Muller and her husband Mike Muller
bred fawn and brindle Great Danes under the kennel
name Dagon Great Danes, beginning in the early
1970’s. During the 1980’s they also bred harlequin
Great Danes in cooperation with Michael Chiles and
Bud and Jodi Keim, (Michaeldane and Jaybee). The
first Top Twenty competition was held in 1987 and
the winner was Ch. Dagon’s Truly Fair. Their top
producer, Ch. Dagon’s In a Flash, is in pedigrees
behind many fawns and brindles showing today.
Trudy and Mike Muller were members of the Great
GDCA
3nd Quarter 2016
Dane Club of America, and the Lakeshore Great Dane
Club.
Linda Tyler Springthorpe, 1943 – 2016 (Thordane,
North Carolina) Linda Tyler Springthorp, with her
husband, Ed Springthorpe, bred fawn and brindle
Great Danes under the kennel name Thordane,
beginning in the late 1960’s. Their most recent
champion was the fawn bitch, Ember, aka Ch.
Topenny’s Fire and Ice Von Shrado and Thordane,
owned with Jane Farmer and Jim and Sandy Hann.
Linda Tyler Springthorpe was a presence in the rings
as an all-breed professional handler in the
southeastern states, and at Nationals across the
country for decades. She retired in 2000. Many of
us were trained and educated, introduced to the
world and the sport of the purebred dog, by Linda.
The example she set in the ring, and the guidance
she offered, taught many novice owners and owner
handlers as well as experienced owners. Linda was a
member of the Great Dane Club of America.
Sue Cates (August 12, 2016, Kai-Dane, Hawaii and
Las Vegas, Nevada) Sue Cates was one of the
founding members of the Great Dane Club of Hawaii,
breeding fawns and brindles under the kennel name
Kai-Dane, established in 1965. The latter part of her
life was spent in Las Vegas, Nevada. Not only did
Sue serve as a supporter of Great Danes and the
sport of pure bred dogs, she also mentored many
novice breeders, exhibitors and owners.
As a
licensed Veterinary Technician, her common sense
and practical advice helped many. Sue wrote the
current Surgical Guidelines for Great Danes,
available through the Great Dane Club of America.
Kai-Dane Great Danes are found in many pedigrees
throughout the United States, and Sue Cates
consistently produced puppies, in Hawaii, using
complimentary bloodlines from the continental
United States. How interesting and challenging that
adventure had to have been, in a time before
today’s technology, in both Canine Reproduction and
instant internet information. Sue Cates was a
member of the Great Dane Club of America

CANINE INFECTIOUS RESPIRATORY
DISEASE “CIRD”: NOTHING TO SNEEZE AT!
Georgia Hymmen
Editor’s note: Thank you to Georgia for allowing us
to reprint this informative article from 2014 as
everyone prepares to travel to the National. The
health and well being of our Danes is everyone’s
priority.
After every National, with every breed—it happens.
Dogs come down with some sort of respiratory
disease frequently described with the catch all term
“kennel cough”.
It’s inevitable. You have a large
number of dogs from various parts of the country
together in one confined location for a relatively
long period of time. Dogs are exposed to strains of
CIRD’s they normally have never been around so
have not had a chance to build immunity. Veterans
GDCA
and young puppies with weakened or immature
immune systems are present. Dogs are present who
may be carriers and present no signs of illness, or
even worse, brought to the show ill. Whatever the
reason, dog owners need to be familiar with CIRD
and understand that not every coughing dog simply
has “kennel cough”.
As with many people, I too had a blasé attitude
about “kennel cough”. Simply a canine cold, I
thought. And, as with human colds, it simply needs
to run its course with little or no veterinary
intervention and the dog would be fine. Certainly,
some individuals might get pneumonia, but those
dogs were far and few in between and were
generally compromised in some manner. Going to
dog shows was like sending the kids to school—they
were certain to come down with “something” at
some point but that “something” rarely was serious.
My first inkling there might be more to “kennel
cough” than I thought was after the GDCA National
in Arizona. A number of dogs came home and got
very sick and some sadly died. There was a lot of
conjecture on what it was; I don’t recall hearing if a
PCR test was done to identify the disease in
question.
In August 2014 CIRD hit home; unbeknown to the
owner at the time, an ill dog was brought to a show.
Dogs crated in close proximity to the ill dog became
sick themselves. First signs were the classic “kennel
cough” hacking, but the illness very quickly
progressed to the dog presenting a very high fever
and pneumonia. Thankfully, because the owner of
the affected dog shared information to other
exhibitors once she realized her dog was ill, all the
dogs that became ill at the show were immediately
treated (no “wait and see” attitude) and recovered
fully. Sadly, there were two deaths occurring in
dogs prior to the show. A PCR test was done on one
of the affected dogs, but due to lab error the sample
was not prepared correctly and was of no use. What
seemed odd to some of us was the very short
incubation period—some dogs became ill two-tothree days after contact—and how extremely fast
the dogs got VERY ill. There was discussion as to
whether it could be canine influenza.
Now, after the GDCA National in Huron, Ohio, a
significant number of dogs have become ill with a
CIRD. As with other cases, the first sign was the
classic cough. Owners, breeders and exhibitors were
outraged when they heard sick dogs had attended
the National. It should go without saying that an ill
dog should never attend a show. In fact, the AKC
has a rule that addresses the issue of bringing sick or
Page | 8
Great Dane Club of America
exposed dogs to a show. However, intentionally or
not, it happens—and it will continue to happen.
To properly understand CIRD, dog owners need to
familiarize themselves with the various diseases.
Many of these diseases are “new”, having only been
identified in the last decade or so. The old
description “kennel cough” should be replaced by
the term CIRD. Kennel cough itself is a disease
(bordetella) but it seems now any dog that is
coughing is classified as that. JP Yousha kindly
several links on CIRD and it would be strongly
suggested owners, breeders and handlers read them.
It will give you valuable insight on the various
diseases and their incubation period. I myself did
not realize that a dog can start off with kennel
cough and then end up with some other CIRD after
the kennel cough had weakened the dog’s
respiratory system. And I did not know that one of
the diseases was contagious before the dog showed
any symptoms. Nor did I realize non-CIRD’s like
canine herpes can cause a cough. The links help
provide understanding on CIRD and offer vaccine and
prevention protocol.
I think one of the biggest challenges is making sure
the owner who has never had a dog with CIRD
recognizes what is going on when the first signs
present themselves. All too frequently, the deep
hacking cough is not recognized for what it is. Many
owners unfamiliar with CIRD think the dog is
gagging, choking, or had something caught in their
throat. While experienced dog owners recognize the
cough and immediately take action, new people may
wait several days before taking appropriate action
(veterinary card and confinement). Certainly, not
ever cough is a CIRD but it should go without saying
ANY dog exhibiting ANY cough should be examined
be a veterinarian. Whether it be a CIRD, a problem
with tonsils or any other reason, the dog will most
likely need treatment.
Whether it’s plain “kennel cough” or some other
CIRD, prompt action should be taken to assure the
health of the dog and that of others. The affected
dog should be examined by a veterinarian and
monitored carefully and if there is any rise in
temperature or a decline in health, the vet should
immediately be contacted. The dog in question
should be confined through the incubation period to
prevent exposing other dogs.
Households with
multiple dogs may find all in the household get ill—
even if an exposed dog does not get ill, it should be
confined until the incubation period is over. If a dog
who attended a show becomes ill, information
should be immediately shared with the other
exhibitors so they can be prepared if their dogs fall
GDCA

ill. If multiple dogs become ill, a PCR test should be
done to determine what they are dealing with.
Again, the links provided give information on the
PCR test. Also, should a dog die of the disease,
there is protocol for your veterinarian to follow
regarding preservation of samples.
Many owners think if their dog has had “kennel
cough” (bordetella) vaccine, they are immune to
CIRD. That is incorrect. As with the human flu,
there are various strains, and the vaccine hopefully
will protect against the most common ones. A
bordetella vaccine does NOT protect against canine
influenza or other CIRD’s. However, in one of the
articles, it was shown that vaccinated dogs, if
affected with true kennel cough, have milder cases.
In closing—life is a risk. Those of us who show ARE
going to have our dogs exposed to diseases. But, so
are those who take their dogs to dog parks, day care
and boarding facilities. The bottom line is, make
sure your dogs are properly vaccinated, in good
health with a healthy immune system, use good
kennel management and operate on your own
comfort level. If you are concerned about your dog
getting sick at a show, simply do not enter. And, if
your dog becomes ill, of course do not bring your
dog, but also do NOT bring any exposed kennel
mates to the show.
To all of those who had dogs become sick at the
National, I wish them a speedy recovery.

Free Range Rescue Chicken is a GDCA Charitable Trust Fundraiser with all monies dedicated to Great Dane
Rescue. The Trust Treasurer is Lisa Foltz and her name appears on the Paypal account. Our Paypal account is
[email protected].
Our goal is $7500. The Fundraiser began on July 5th, 2016 and will end on October 5, 2016. We have SIX numbered
chickens in circulation and just recently added 6 numbered Evil Twin FRRCs. You can tell them by their birth mark.
Here’s How to play: When you receive a chicken, take an interesting/fun/provocative photo. Post your photo on
the Free Range Rescue Chicken Facebook Page. Make a donation of any size to the Paypal account. If you don't
choose to donate, you cannot be chosen as a top 12 photo and will not be added to the Album. Send your chicken
and his instruction card to the next victim (player), within THREE days of receipt. The top 12 best photos will be
selected by a committee (Admins for this site) and the TOP winner from among those will be announced at the
GDCA Tailgate 2016 and receive a prize or two and bragging rights. If you fold in his wings, he fits in a business
sized envelope and will go for one first class stamp.
If you do not wish to play, please send the chicken along to another victim. Any questions, please contact any
Admin or PM, Kathy Toomey or Denise Chaboya Matulich. Please share! Please add folks

OFA/ACVIM ADVANCED CARIDAC
PROGRAM
The OFA and the American College of Veterinary
Internal Medicince have partnered to create and
advanced cardiac database. Details follow, retrieved

exam protocols. However, effective April 1, 2016,
we will be offering the Advanced Cardiac Database
(ACA), which will become the new standard for
cardiac exams and will eventually replace the
existing Congenital Cardiac Database. Please note,
exams for the new Advanced Cardiac Database are
limited to boarded veterinary cardiologists with
Diplomate status in either the ACVIM (American

Over the past year, the OFA has been working with a
steering committee established by the American
College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) to
make improvements to the OFA’s existing Congenital
Cardiac Database. The primary purposes of the
enhancements are to 1) develop an appropriate
screening protocol for adult onset cardiac diseases,
and 2) begin collecting better data on cardiac
disease prevalence and progression in the purebred
dog.
The OFA’s existing cardiac database only provides
clearances for congenital cardiac disease, with a
minimum exam age of 12 months, and where exams
can be performed by general practitioners,
specialists or boarded veterinary cardiologists
(ACVIM/Cardiology Diplomates). Since many canine
cardiac diseases develop after 12 months age, the
current congenital cardiac database does NOT clear
dogs for these adult onset diseases.
Since the OFA Cardiac application forms are used
primarily by breeders and owners to clear their dogs
for congenital cardiac disease, very few applications
with abnormal exam results are ever submitted. As a
result, the congenital cardiac database statistics are
almost completely skewed towards normal dogs, and
in no way represent an accurate incidence of cardiac
disease in dogs.
There will be a transition period (length to be
determined) where the current OFA Congenital
Cardiac Database will continue to be available with
no changes to the forms, submission procedures or
GDCA
College of Veterinary Internal Medicine/Cardiology
subspecialty) or the ECVIM (European College of
Veterinary
Internal
Medicine/Cardiology
subspecialty). General practitioners and other
specialists may not perform Advanced Cardiac
Database exams.
Modeled after the OFA’s eye screening program, the
new ACA exam form is a triplicate form, and is
therefore not available as a .pdf download from the
OFA website. All the participating cardiologists have
been sent forms, and ACA forms will be available at
the time of the exam. Regardless of whether or not
the owner submits their copy of the form to the OFA
for official certification, the examining cardiologist
will submit one copy of the form to the OFA. The
results contained on the cardiologist-submitted copy
will remain confidential. No official OFA clearances
will be issued from this copy. The cardiologistsubmitted copy will only be used to record results at
an aggregate level to begin collecting better cardiac
disease prevalence and progression data by breed in
the purebred dog, one of the major purposes of the
enhancements. Should an echocardiogram be
warranted as a result of the basic auscultation, the
echo section of the new form is also far more
detailed so that better statistics regarding flow
rates, velocities, etc., can be collected. From an
owner perspective, there is NO CHANGE once
receiving the completed signed form following the
exam. For official OFA certification, owners should
submit their copy of the completed signed form to
the OFA along with the required fee, and an OFA

number for all passing dogs will be issued.
Under the existing Congenital Cardiac Database,
certification numbers begin with “CA” to indicate a
cardiac clearance. Exams submitted using the new
Advanced Cardiac Database forms will result in
certification numbers beginning with “ACA” for
Advanced Cardiac. If the breed is participating in the
CHIC program and the breed’s CHIC criteria include a
cardiac exam requirement, the new ACA clearances
WILL QUALIFY.
Only normal results submitted by the owner for
official OFA certification will automatically be
placed in the open database, released to the public
domain and viewable on the OFA website. For dogs
with abnormal exam results, owners can “opt-in” for
full disclosure by initialing the abnormal release
block on the exam form. For abnormal results, ONLY
those authorized for release by the owner will
appear on the OFA website. As with most other OFA
databases, the registration fee is waived for owners
willing to place abnormal results in the public
domain or open database.

Since the second major enhancement of the
Advanced Cardiac Database addresses adult onset
diseases, the new ACA has a two-tiered clearance for
normal dogs. In other words, the resulting OFA
certificate will indicate, “This dog has been found to
be free of congenital cardiac disease,” “This dog has
been found to be free of adult onset cardiac
disease,” or “This dog has been found to be free of
congenital and adult onset cardiac disease.” The
clearance type will also be indicated on the OFA
website. The minimum age for either clearance type
is 12 months. While the congenital clearance
remains valid for the life of the dog, owners should
be aware that the adult onset clearance will only
remain valid for one year from the time of the exam.
If owners wish for the adult onset clearance to
remain current, repeat exams will be necessary. This
is the only way to address cardiac diseases which can
develop throughout the life of the dog. The one year
validity period and subsequent expiration for adult
onset clearances is viewed as a critical component
by the ACVIM/Cardiology group in order to even
consider diagnosing dogs as normal when many
cardiac diseases of concern to breeders can develop
at any time in the dog’s life.
The ACVIM/Cardiology group has also determined
that because of the specific cardiomyopathy
concerns in the Boxer and Doberman Pinscher
breeds, an adult onset clearance for these two
breeds will ALSO REQUIRE a Holter test to be
performed within 90 days of the regular cardiac
exam. The examining cardiologists will also have
Holter exam forms available. Interpretation of the
Holter test is limited to boarded veterinary
cardiologists with Diplomate status in either the
ACVIM or the ECVIM.
