A POEM IN MATHS
By - Dr John Celes
Count your blessings, God-given;
Add them one by one, each day;
Subtract your pessimism;
Divide time for all your works;
Multiply your joys in life;
Get success in earthly stay,
By praying to the Lord.
Numbers
Numbers
Numbers
Numbers
are infinitesimal;
are so magical;
can have decimal;
rule the modern world.
Numbers are abstract / real;
Numbers can amuse us all;
Numbers are the ‘bricks’ of Maths!
Numberless, world is dismal.
They can count your hair, these days;
They can count the stars, some ways;
Man’s progression in Maths is base,
For putting man on Moon, or Mars?
The month of July had the block –
Numbers make computers work;
Hypotheses form the science;
Integers are wonders too;
A genius in mathematics
Is a MATHEMAGICIAN!

MATHS FEST
MATHS FEST was organized on 6th July 2012 to commemorate 2012 as the
National Mathematical Year, marking the 125th birth year of eminent Indian
Mathematician, Srinivasa Aaiyangar Ramanujan.
An exhibition was held in the open area near the library. The exhibition
housed working models & charts. Students manning the stalls explained the
objective of the models & their workings.
MATHS FEST
Ever thought that we could play games with Maths?The students taught us
how maths can be made fun when learnt &practised in a game formatHousie, Symmetry using flags, Greater than or lesser than, Look at the chart
& say the color & not the word, Number sequencing &Mathematch sticks
The language room had all the action in the fest for it was the venue for the
coveted interclass treasure hunt. Treasures were hidden throughout the room
& the class team had to find the treasure by solving the mathematical clues.
Bulletin boards all decked up on the theme of Maths with colorful quizzes,
mini charts, cartoons, problems & comics, set the mood for the fest. The
themes were as follows –
Class 3 – Shapes & Patterns
Class 4 - Four operations
Class 5 - Factors & multiples
The entrance to each classroom was adorned with the all-welcoming rangolis
but with a twist, they were based on Maths.
MATHS FEST
The AV room held the center stage at
the Maths Fest as the venue of the
main program. The program started
with a welcome address & a short
introductory speech on 2012 being
declared as the National Mathematical
Year. The audience was briefed on the
importance of the day and Maths in
everyday life. A tribute was paid to
Indian
mathematicians,
specifically
Srinivasa Aaiyangar Ramanujan, as
2012 marked his 125th birth year.
The speech warmed up the audience to
a foot-tapping number by students of
class 3, 4 & 5. It gave way to a skit on
the
importance
of
zero,
rather
insignificant by itself but with the
power to increase a value of any
number when occupying different place
values in the number.
This was followed by a fashion show, based on the basic themes of Maths like
shapes, numbers, operations etc. Interesting concepts beautifully put
together by the children as they cat-walked their way on stage & into our
hearts.
MATHS FEST
The day ended with an interclass quiz. The preliminary rounds were held a
week before the final event. Teachers selected the best candidates for the
competition. 4 teams from each standard were made, each given fun Math
names. The final quiz had 4 rounds –
Round 1 – Mental Maths
Round 2 – Riddles
Round 3 – Visual (photographs of eminent mathematicians were to be
identified)
Round 4 – Speedy Maths (5 sums were to be solved in 1 minute)
A month’s hard work &
practice bore fruit in the
success of the fest as
children went back home,
totally engaged in the
magic of Maths – discussing
exhibits, the show, the
problem they failed to solve
/ successfully figured out,
their team’s performance in
the treasure hunt, which
class had the most beautiful
bulletin board & rangoli –
Mathswas everywhere.

RAPID READING
Speed reading is a skill that can be learned. It
mostly involves breaking poor habits that you may
have developed since you learned to read. Simply
becoming a faster reader isn't the point, either –
you want to become a more efficient reader.There
are some great techniques that you can use when
practicing speed reading, including reading blocks
of words, and breaking the habit of subvocalization. Our students did just that as they put
their rapid reading skill to test on July 25. But
they were well prepared, armed with the beautiful
bookmarks they had made. Check out speedy
students at their creative best.

ASSEMBLY – 5C
OLYMPICS FEVER
CATCHES ON IN DPS
In continuum with the DPS tradition of informative class assemblies, the
current session witnessed its’ first month of class assemblies led by 5C,
ringing in the spirit of the season –‘Olympics.’ 5C conducted its assembly on
12 July based on the theme ‘Sports.’ The concept of fair play, respecting
rules, opponents &sportsman spirit was highlighted through a short act. A
peppy number with students dressed as prominent sports persons had the
audience swinging to its tune.
ASSEMBLY – 5H
THE 345 NEWSDESK
5H conducted its assembly on ‘Current Affairs’ on 25 July. It covered news
across the board from the state, to national & international news. Sports,
entertainment – Hollywood & Bollywood, too found its way in the assembly
which updated the kids on happenings across the globe.
ASSEMBLY – 5D
BOOK WORMS OF
345
‘Books’ was the theme
chosen
by 5D, which
conducted its assembly on
26 July. The highlight of
the assembly was an
interactive session where
students dressed-up as
different book characters
walked the stage dropping
little hints about their
characters. Based on these
hints the audience had to
guess who they were.
