Nancy and others who helped. Great food and
fellowship. Over 70 attended with over 100

Door prizes are always
popular with the Floyd’s winning two, Abe Loven

also winning. Abe won the $25 Woodcraft gift
certificate.
And --- two new carvers joined the club at the
picnic (see pages 6-7 for pictures) - Rebecca Black

FROM THE PRESIDENTS DESK
Hope that you all have found a cool place to carve
during these 100 degree summer days!! Whew!!
And June was busy month!!
Charlotte
Woodcarvers completed our demo carving at
Davie Park for Parks and Recreation on June 5, 7,
12 and 14 (see page 8 for pictures). This was a
biggie for the club as we get a $500 credit against
our rental of Marion Diehl for the Showcase of
Did you like the Shore Birds that Fred Bozenhart
displayed at the Picnic? Fred has agreed to teach
a session on carving shore birds this fall. So keep
this in mind as we start our fall carving program.
Thanks to each of you for all that you do.

Special Notes of Interest
Cathcart Center is open from 3pm to 7:30pm.
This was arranged to accommodate those who
may wish to carve in the afternoon and also
give us an opportunity to “balance” the
numbers of carvers in the evenings. Of course,
all are welcome to stay over and carve during
the evenings if you wish. Just a reminder –
Carmel Presbyterian provides this to our club
as a Community Service for us. In this regard,
let’s be good stewards in keeping this place
clean. Also, when you leave – do NOT put the
chairs up. Be respectful of those who are
continuing to carve.
Nativity for Carmel Presbyterian Church. THEY
NEED TO BE FINISHED BY 3-4 WEEK OF JULY SO
THAT THEY CAN BE PAINTED. PLEASE SEE BILL
DOMINICK IF ANY QUESTIONS. AUCTION IS IN
AUGUST RATHER THAN OCTOBER!!
Note the fall carving shows. Lexington,
Greenville, Hickory. If you get a chance to
attend and enter these shows, you will be
encouraged and might win. It surely gives you
a lot of information about what judges look for
in carvings. And these folks support us here in
Charlotte too.
New Venue for Carving. The Charlotte
Woodcarvers Club has an invitation to carve on
Tuesday mornings from 9am – 11:30am. Board
agreed to pursue this on a trial basis if there is
interest with club members. In discussing at
the club - and later with other members, four
members have indicated that they would
commit to carve at Hobby Lobby. Therefore,
we have made arrangements with Hobby
Lobby for the Charlotte Woodcarvers Club to
carve on Tuesdays from 9am-11;30am. This
will begin on July 31. We can publicize the club
and show through them. Matthews-Mint Hill
Weekly news has indicated they would like to
come over once we get started with
photographers and run a story on our activity
there.
SHOWCASE OF WOODCARVINGS – 2013
A NOTE ON MEMBERS
1. Demo carving completed at Davis Park. $500
credit against our rental for show.
2. Showcase Cash Awards is approved for
increase to $1800 from $1200 for 2013. Cash
awards added for Intermediate and Novice
Divisions for Theme, Caricatures, Birds, Relief
and Santas. Open has always been a cash
award for the theme and each of the cash
award categories. Runner-up cash awards
have been added for each division – i.e. Open,
Intermediate and Novice. The Best of Show
and BOS Runner-up cash awards have also
been increased. The reason for these changes
is to encourage more intermediate and novice
carvers to enter the show while at the same
time continuing to attract the top quality
carvers throughout the Southeast and beyond
– all geared to a Bigger and Better Showcase
for your enjoyment.
3. Showcase of Woodcarvings and Brochure will
be printed and put on our website:
www.charlottewoodcarvers.com in July, 2012.
4. Two additional big time carvers have indicated
they will be coming to the show: Peter Ortel
(formerly of NYC and now of South Carolina)
and Steve Brown of Kentucky. Bridges Dillehay
of Nashville, Tennessee will be returning again
this year.
5. Bob Slaughter is putting all the pieces together
for renting booths in the Marion Diehl
Recreation Center for the show.
6. Harry Lawrence is the Show Chairman. Call
Harry and ask how you can volunteer and help.
704-589-0829 or [email protected] or
see him on Tuesday evenings.
7. Keep carving for the show. If each of us carve
and exhibit at least five carvings for the show,
we would have over 600 carvings. We have
some carvers who exhibit as many as 27. So
get’em ready to compete.
Tom Wolfe began his chemo treatment this past week.
Neil Zyp, Bob Warner, Harry Lawrence and Ray Branch
traveled to Tom’s Woodcarving Studio on Grandfather
in June to see Tom (see Page 4 for Pictures). He is in
great spirits, gives everyone his regards and says to say
a prayer for him. Tom plans to come to the studio as
he feels like it. If you plan to go up, I suggest you call
to see that he will be there. Nice trip of only 2 and 1/2
hours or so from Charlotte. I am sure he would
appreciate your cards as well.
Woodcarving Class in the Blue Ridge Mountains
The Blue Ridge Carving Weekend is set for August 2326, and the class is full! If you are interested in going
and did not get signed up, contact me about the
waiting list. There is no deposit required to get on the
waiting list. It is possible we could get a 2nd instructor
if enough people still want to go, but I would need to
know soon.
This long weekend at Wildacres Resort in Little
Switzerland, NC is sure to be a great get-away for all
those attending. Wildacres is a beautiful mountain
retreat just perfect for a cool escape from the summer
heat in Charlotte. Several spouses are going along,
and I will be getting back to those who have signed up
with a list of possible activities for non-carvers. We
will arrive on Thursday to check in at Wildacres and
have dinner Thursday night. Friday morning we will
begin 3 days of instruction from one of our long time
members, Mitch Cartledge. Mitch is an excellent
caricature carver, and member of The Caricature
Carvers of America (CCA). For a brief biography of
Mitch, view this website: http://www.ccacarvers.org/bio-pages/cartledge.html
Start thinking about next year. We hope to make this
an annual event. If we have enough people sign up
early enough, we can plan for additional instructor(s).
Mitch will have at least 3 different rough outs to
choose from for this class, and will handle the
collection of his fee directly from the carvers when
they get there. I will be contacting those of you who
signed up with a balance due amount in early July. We
hope to have this collected by August 3rd. If you are
signed up and find you will not be able to make it, you
Page 3 of 9
can still get your deposit back. Please let me know
soon if this happens, as there are already a couple of
people on the waiting list.
This will be a fun weekend! Call me at the number
below if you have questions. Leave a message if I am
not there and I will call you back soon. I will also be at
the Tuesday meetings. The web address for the resort
is: wildacres.org
