THE MARYLAND LINE
Country Club of Maryland
May 2016
From the General Manager...
It’s the time of year where we honor our parents, and try to treat them to something nice. This year, the Club will
continue with some long-standing traditions, and also try to create some new ones.
We will once again be offering our very popular Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet on Sunday May 8th. With seating
available between 11am and 1:15pm, this is an enormously popular event, and we encourage our Members to make
their reservations as early as possible.
For Mother’s Day’s Dinner service, we will now offer our Membership an “ala carte” served meal, with a special
menu prepared by Chef Dan. We’re taking reservations for this special dinner with Mom beginning at 5:30pm.
Hosting an event on Father’s Day is always a challenge, as most Dads prefer to keep it simple – stay home, maybe
play some golf… nothing too elaborate. With that in mind, we elected to offer some great food and entertainment
on the Saturday night before Father’s Day – Saturday June 18th. Building upon what we feel all Dads like, please
join us for “Barbecue, Beer and Bluegrass” from 6:30pm to 9:30pm on “Father’s Day Eve!” Chef Dan and his team
will take care of the barbecue, and he surely will pull out all the stops. We’ve got a representative from DuClaw
Brewery coming by to pour us a few of their great beers, and entertainment will be provided by the Foggy Hollow
Bluegrass Band. Bring Dad and the kids! Let us do all the cooking and cleaning! Stick around for a few beers, a
game of corn-hole and some great live music! Enjoy Father’s Day weekend!

Attention All Members who use the Practice Range...
For safety and well being of all players on the golf course, when hitting balls on
the range, please don't hit the ball over the net. This includes balls going towards
#7 and #9 holes. "Just because you can hit the ball over the net, doesn't mean
that you should" Thank you for your understanding!
Hello from the Golf Shop,

Congratulations to George Haigley for his first Hole in One, at the age of 14 years old!!!! Bill Smillie also
had his first hole in one on #8, he is a little older than 14 years old.
Please remember to post your scores for all rounds played here and any other course you play, with the
exception of scores played while playing alone. You have just received a copy of the Golfer’s Handbook.
In there it outlines the only scores that can be posted as Tournament Scores. Please remember to post all
tournament scores whether or not that event is posted as “Tournament Score” Handicap Chair, David
Henry, is monitoring closely all scores to ensure they will be posted. If a tournament score is not posted a
penalty score will be applied. A penalty score is equal to the lowest score of your last 20 scores.
The first Guest Day of the year is on Thursday May 12th. The price is $88.00 per player. There’s a lunch,
golf, prizes and heavy hors d’ oeuvres surrounding the putting contest.

May 15th to July 15th. You can purchase 3 Guests Fees and get a free guest fee. This is a great way bring out
some friends or colleagues with a 25% discount. These fees must be used by the 31st of December of this
year.

Do you have a rules question? Don’t be afraid to ask, if I don’t know the answer we have a wealth of knowledge just a call away.
New Putting Green is a huge improvement over the old one. Now you can practice hitting flat putts and
improve you game. It still has some movement and some character which makes it fun as well. Please don’t
practice putting for an extended time in the same footprints, move around and give the green a break.
Have you hit this shot before? If so, you might need a club fitting from the Golf Shop or a lesson from Owen Dawson. Call us
immediately, we can help!
See you at the Club,
Mike Healy

Hello from the Green Department...
Why are the greens so puffy? Were the greens mowed today? When will the greens be rolling smoother?
These are just a few of the common questions we get this time of year. Spring is very much a transitional season. While the
air temperatures are warm the soil temperatures are still quite cool. The recent cold snap a few weeks ago didn’t help either. It got cold enough to push the bent grass into a short dormant stage.
Here at the club we are managing some very old species of turfgrass. The club opened in 1925, but the greens were constructed a year before that. The 92 years of cross pollination has lead to hundreds of different species of Bentgrass and Poa
Annua on our greens. It is not uncommon to have 20-30 different species of each grass on each green with each green being it’s own unique environment. We use the same maintenance practices on our greens as much as possible to create a
uniform putting surface from hole to hole, but with all the different species of grasses the greens will have subtle
differences between them.
Many of you probably watched The Masters tournament recently and noticed how well the greens were rolling. At
Augusta their greens are all bentgrass. Prior to 1981 Augusta’s greens were bermudagrass. In 1981 they changed over to all
bentgrass creating the amazing greens showcased every year in The Master’s. Here at the club, if we were managing one
species of grass it would be a lot easier to get consistency and uniformity.
The puffy playing surface is a result of the Poa’s seedhead production. Research found that air temperatures of 80 degrees
trigger Poa to produce seedheads. A single Poa plant can produce 360 seeds in the span of four months equating to 30million seeds per acre. We are currently in peak seedhead production. It will start tapering off in the next few weeks and the
greens will roll smoother. This yearly seedhead production process is what makes the greens seem inconsistent or high.
Starting full time in May we will have a new face in our department. We hired Jake Kilmon as a new Assistant
Superintendent. Jake is currently enrolled in the University of Maryland’s turfgrass program. Jake is currently working on
his days off from school, so be sure to say hi to our newest team member. So far this season has started off great and it’s
shaping up to be a great year for golf. We will see you on the course!
Hello from the Lesson Tee!
Have you ever considered taking golf lessons at the Country Club of Maryland?
There are always other choices when it comes to selecting a golf instructor since most any course and golf store will offer golf instruction.
So why choose Owen Dawson Golf Instruction?
The benefits of choosing O.D.G.I. are outlined below:
1. We continue to educate ourselves through teaching seminars and keep up to date on the latest technology and swing
theories.
2. We don’t try to mold you into the average positions PGA Tour player are in when they swing a club. There are no two
swings on any professional tour that are the same, yet many teachers still base their swing teaching methods around
what the average tour player does.
3. The reality for many golfers is they can’t physically get into positions during a swing that many great players
can. Shoulder injuries, bad hips and bad backs are all issues that players face. Trying to do something your body won’t
allow you to do is a great recipe for injury. ODGI works around those limitations and customizes our golf instruction to
work with your personal capabilities.
4. You get to see the flight of the ball, putt on a real green, see and feel a correctly struck bunker shot and play on a real
golf course.
Golf Instruction may seem intimidating but it’s not!
Some players think, “ I just need to practice more to get better”. But do you really understand what and how to practice?
Do you know specifically what you are trying to change in your swing? Are you getting the correct feedback when you hit
a shot? Are you ultimately improving your game?
If you answered NO to any of these questions then come see me for a FREE 20-min Intro Lesson on Saturday May 7th
between 2:45-4:45pm.
