THE SAS 32K INTERCOM SYSTEMS
define advanced-level professional communication systems built
around SAS 32000 Series Switching and Mixing System components. Excellent audio specifications and multi-microprocessor
architecture combine to shape a robust yet economical high performance programmable intercommunication system which services
32 user stations within a 3RU frame.
The system also provides up to sixteen programmable relays that
can be assigned for keying ancillary devices such as two-way radios.
A PC is connected to the system to allow alpha and/or pushbutton
programming through menu driven software.
Dynamic status and operation of the entire system can be displayed in a comprehensive matrix screen which allows “quick at a
glance” observation of all communication talk paths. This display
is also useful for setting up communication configurations such as
mix-minus conferencing, IFB crosspoints, and more.
Software programmable features include full eight character
alphanumeric subscriber designation, separate talk and listen capability, interruptible foldback (IFB) and programmable groups. Fully
featured control panels include intuitive alphanumeric selection,
“hot punch” programmable talk and listen pushbuttons, communications mic and preamp, loudspeaker and amplifier. They are available in eight or sixteen button, rack mount and desktop
configurations. Also available are single rack and console mount
stations that provide control-only for locations with access to linelevel mic signals and cue speakers relating to audio consoles or
news desks.
The SAS 32000 Matrix is configured as a 32 input by 32 output
mono system in which each user connects to one input, one output and one data circuit. The matrix is operated at a nominal 0
dBu level, and each SAS intercom station features adjustable
microphone gain with peak limiting for constant talk levels. The
central matrix may be provided with fixed unity gain inputs, Model
SIA-8, or with optional digitally controlled input amplifiers, Model
DCA-8. These amplifiers provide adjustable input sensitivity to
accommodate program or talk sources which are derived from other
than SAS stations and may be different than nominal system level.
The sensitivity is adjustable using the front panel controls on the
AXC-8R. The gain setting reads out directly in dBs on the alphanumeric display.
Other features include a full eight character alphanumeric display
to show both incoming and outgoing calls, a dedicated ANSWER button that is automatically programmed to the last caller, and logic
inputs and outputs suitable for dim or mute functions when the station is placing or receiving a call.

INTERCOM STATIONS
Fully featured intercom stations connect to one matrix audio
input (talk), one audio output (listen), and one RS-485 control
line. These panels provide film legendable pushbuttons which are
destination programmable via the central computer. Intercom
stations are available in a two-rack unit panel with eight or sixteen pushbuttons (RCS-8 and RCS-16) as well as desktop models
(DCS-8 and DCS-16). Each pushbutton may be programmed to
Talk and/or Listen to any destination using the menu driven system configuration software provided. The pushbuttons illuminate
to tally and identify the calling location. Additionally, ALL CALL,
GROUP CALL, DIAL UP and CALL ANSWER pushbuttons are provided. The
ALL CALL switch allows the operator to simultaneously call all the
stations on the matrix. The GROUP CALL switch lets the user talk to
multiple destinations with a single pushbutton. Each station
has one group programmable via the system configuration software. Also available is the Model SCS-8 Station, a single rack unit
panel with six programmable buttons, as well as GROUP CALL and
CALL ANSWER buttons.
Each station is also fitted with an alphanumeric eight character
LED dot matrix display and shaft encoder. The display allows full
access selection to any system destination, well beyond the 8 or
16 available by direct pushbuttons. It also indicates the last call
received. The shaft encoder is used to scroll through the directory of destinations in alphabetical order. Once a selection is made,
the DIAL UP pushbutton activates the circuit. The last selected destination is always in queue, assigned to the DIAL UP pushbutton
until a new selection is made. When an incoming call is received,
the incoming caller’s location is automatically programmed to the
CALL ANSWER pushbutton, the alpha display shows the calling parties
name, the CALL ANSWER pushbutton illuminates and the DIAL UP pushbutton extinguishes. Both CALL ANSWER and DIAL UP pushbuttons are
programmed to the last selected values at all times; the illuminated pushbutton indicates which destination is currently shown
in the alpha display. A quick tap on either pushbutton will change
the display to show that destination.
SXT-32 OUTPUT MODULE
Each station is also equipped with a footswitch port, relay contact
outputs and logic inputs. The footswitch activates talk to the DIAL
UP destination. This allows the operator to program the desired
destination(s) and ‘press to talk’ with a momentary action
footswitch for hands free operation. Two relay outputs are provided: one closes during outgoing talk and the other closes during incoming speech. These may be useful for steering audio into
talkback circuits, muting or dimming monitors or even muting or
dimming other intercom stations in close proximity to minimize
the potential for acoustical feedback. The logical opto inputs
allow for speaker mute or dim.
Each station has an internal loudspeaker with a 5 watt amplifier,
provision for external loudspeaker, gooseneck or flush mounted
microphone and connection for external mic and headset.
Provisions for line-level or dynamic microphone talk inputs are also
included. An auxiliary I/O port is available for interfacing with
other communication systems, local program sources or telephone
sets as required.
All station pushbuttons use multi-LED cartridges for life long illumination—making bulb replacement unnecessary.
CONTROL PANELS
The APC-88 and PBS-16 panels offer control-only. The audio in
and out signals must be provided by other means within the facility. The System Terminal connected to the AXC-8R is used to program each pushbutton to talk or listen to any of the available
destinations. These buttons operate as momentary push-to-talk
(PTT) or latching push-on push-off listens. The PBS-16 is a single
rack unit with sixteen programmable pushbuttons and one CALL
ANSWER pushbutton. As in the fully featured intercom stations, the
CALL ANSWER pushbutton is automatically programmed to the last
incoming caller. The pushbuttons illuminate when a call is
received. The APC-88 console mount panel provides eight programmable pushbuttons, one DIAL UP or SELECT pushbutton and one
CALL ANSWER pushbutton. The APC-88 also has a solid state relay
that closes on incoming speech which may be used to trigger

listen facilities. A good example would be a talkback input to a
console cue speaker or monitor.
Operationally, the APC-88’s DIAL UP and ANSWER pushbuttons operate
in conjunction with the alphanumeric display as in the fully featured intercom stations. The CDS-8-ICOM provides a two line
alpha display for CALL ANSWER and DIAL UP. Press the large button for
ANSWER and press the shaft encoder for talk to DIAL UP. Both APC88 and CDS-8-ICOM are available in many different housings for
most audio consoles.
INTEGRATED IFB FUNCTIONALITY
The SAS 32000 Intercom provides built-in IFB capability. A program source may be connected to any spare input. After a program
source has been assigned to any destination (output), it will be
automatically interrupted by any talk activity to that destination.
Multiple program sources may be mixed to a destination using the
system configuration software. The mix will then be automatically
interrupted by talk activity.
IFB destinations are typically outbound lines which do not
require an input to the intercom matrix. This frees up input ports
for program line input to the intercom matrix. For systems which
require a large number of program sources or IFB destinations an
auxiliary SAS Matrix may be coupled to the intercom matrix.
This keeps intercom ports available for in-house communications
while greatly expanding the remote capabilities from the intercom control panels.
IFB ONLY SYSTEMS
The SAS 32000 series matrix also forms the nucleus of a powerful
stand-alone IFB system. The normal composite program source is
selected using the system administering PC. The ability to sum
within the matrix allows for mix-minus creation. The SAS 32000 is
available in multiple configurations with enough capacity for very
large facilities, venues or special events. The inherent expandable
architecture allows the system to grow as requirements develop.
Additionally, the system offers superb audio quality and is designed
to operate using standard broadcast line-level sources. The programmability of the system allows intelligent source selection based
on other stimulus, e.g., studio feeds selected based on transmitter
router status.

The ‘normal’ source assignments are interruptible under operator
command. When more than one operator must interrupt simultaneously, the system sums all active voice signals so information is
never lost.
PBS-32 PUSHBUTTON SELECT CONTROL PANEL
Control panels usually provide push-to-talk pushbuttons. The TBM
Series, as shown to the right, provides film legendable, LED illuminated pushbuttons. A single wire pair for RS-485 serial communication and another pair for audio are the only interconnections
required, in addition to power. PBS Series Control Panels provide
up to 64 programmable destinations in a single rack unit.
Intelligent tallies notify the operator on a real-time basis—the
LEDs are steadily illuminated while talking and flash when in use by
another operator.
