It Takes a Team to Create a Star
South Shore Day Care Services — 2009 Annual Report
It Takes a
Team to Create a Star
Empowering Children
to Succeed
Through Excellence in Education,
Enrichment and Family Support
Dear Friends of South Shore Day Care Services,
Our last annual report, titled More than Our Name Describes,
was a clear indicator that we were grappling with communicating our identity to the outside world, even though
internally we were very aware of the depth and range of our
programs and the impact on the needs of the community. As
Board and staff contemplated a new name to accommodate
our growing footprint, some common themes developed
around how we communicate our core goals. We sought
to convey the excellence of our educational planning and
practice, our caring and well trained staff, our innovative
programs, and the importance of the work we do to help
families remain self-reliant and to help their children succeed.
We wanted to chose a name that would be hopeful, strong,
memorable, easy to say, and allowed for growth… yet we
hung on to the need to describe all that we do!
We chose a name and look that marries our past with our
present and future. Our familiar gold star emerged with a
fresh new feel grounded by our principles …excellence in
education, enrichment and family support. We feel inspired,
hopeful and strong as we move forward with our same
purpose and resolve.
Over the next year we will introduce our new name to the
community. Special thanks to the strategic marketing experts
at Devine & Pearson who donated their time and talent to
the name change process and design of our new logo.
Thank you for being part of our team, after all it takes a team
to create a star!
With much appreciation,
Michelle Carson
President of the Board of Directors
About South Shore Day Care Services
South Shore Day Care Services (SSDCS) is a non-profit
organization devoted to providing quality early education and
youth development programs serving the children, families,
and communities of the South Shore of Massachusetts. Since
1970, SSDCS has focused its efforts on two goals:
-Enabling parents to work and remain self-reliant
-Helping children reach their full developmental potential
Over the course of a year, we support over 1,200 children
in 22 family day care homes, 3 preschool centers,
8 elementary afterschool locations, summer camp, and a
school based middle and high school program. We provide
year round care and support for working families including
information, referral, advocacy, as well as emergency
assistance for basic needs.

Mission Statement
South Shore Day Care Services’ mission is to provide
comprehensive early education and youth programs,
using a family support approach, that enhance the
development of children from economically and
culturally diverse families through collaboration with
schools and communities.
It Takes a Team to
Create a Star
Empowering Children to Succeed through
Excellence in Education, Enrichment and
Family Support
Would you send your child out on the court without
their team?
• All parents and communities want their children to succeed.
• South Shore Day Care Services makes it happen by developing a
winning game plan that is built on excellence in education,
enrichment and family support.
Since 1970 SSDCS’ has understood the importance of
putting together a winning team around a child to
empower them to succeed.
• Excellence in education means;
- we scout out best practice,
- we build on each player’s strengths,
- we coach,
- analyze statistics,
- identify obstacles, and head out onto the court with a game plan
to ensure a winning season for our kids.
Excellence in education means... We are goal oriented.
• We believe the final score does matter and we continually evaluate
outcomes and find specific and measurable ways to keep score.
• Like many successful coaches, we make adjustments to promote
success for each child and family.
• Our programs are recognized for their quality by;
- National Association for the Education of Young Children,
- United Way of Mass Bay and Merrimack Valley,
- Massachusetts Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education,
- Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, and
the communities we serve.
We are proud of our winning record with kids and families.
It Takes a Team to
Create a Star
Excellence in enrichment means... project based clubs
aligned with the public school curriculum.
• Our kids learn to dissect and study;
- design and test,
- plan, implement,
- and have fun while learning.
• Team building activities encourage kids to work together and
creative arts activities promote self-expression and self-esteem.
Excellence in family support means... We build
relationships with families to help them meet the
challenges of the changing world.
• We work toward solutions with an emphasis on self reliance, and
we encourage kids to practice the tools that allow them to succeed
on their own.
• Our caring team of social workers and enrollment specialists
coordinate strategies with parents, teachers, family members, and
outside resources to achieve practical solutions to manage stress
and strengthen family autonomy.
• We strive to help parents build capacity in their dual roles of
caregiver and breadwinner.
Excellence in support means promoting strategies
for school success including parent involvement
and parent education.
• Supporting families to succeed is hard work, but it has enormous
benefits for the wider community.
We are all winners when we make a difference in the
fabric of our community and lend a hand to a child.
