The Doctor Takes
Dr. Michael Davenport Brings a Physician’s
to New Role as Methodist Hospitals President
“I have drawn
strength and
inspiration from
the support I have
received from our
physicians and
staff, as well as
our community.”
When Michael Davenport, MD, was named
Methodist Hospitals’ president and interim
chief executive officer in November, Methodist
became one of just a few indiana hospitals
led by a physician.
No stranger to executive roles at Methodist,
Dr. Davenport previously served as the
hospitals’ Chief Medical Officer and Vice
President of Medical affairs.
as a physician, Dr. Davenport’s “patient first”
background is in complete harmony with the
hospitals’ mission. He sees financial stability
and success as a natural byproduct of providing
quality care.
“You don’t focus on making money,”
Dr. Davenport said, “you make money by
making sure your care and services are the best
they can be.”
according to Dr. Davenport, it’s the
people within the organization that make
it successful. as a result, fostering
relationships within the organization is
among his top priorities.
“two thousand people work here and we
need to make sure they have what they need
to be successful and know that we care about
them,” he said.
His background as a physician gives
Dr. Davenport a unique understanding of
a physician’s needs, and he hopes to nurture
a special relationship with physicians across
Northwest indiana.
“The success of a healthcare organization
is largely dependent on the doctors,” Dr.
Davenport said. “Doctors care about the
organization and want to be actively
engaged. i intend to make sure they
continue to have a voice.”
Closely allied with his emphasis on
relationships, is a focus on operational
soundness.
“We must be good stewards of the money we
make and invest wisely,” Dr. Davenport said.
“You have to make sure you can live up to your
mission, which is to take care of folks.”

– with a twist.
Dr. Davenport believes Methodist’s position as
one of the few independent hospitals in the area
contributes to the special relationship it has with
the community.
“We’ve been around a long, long time,” he said.
“From the Board of Directors on down, our
commitment is to Gary, Merrillville and the
surrounding communities. We are steadfast in our
commitment to provide quality care to everybody
in need regardless of their ability to pay, race or
economic group.”
in reflecting on the changes that have taken
place at the hospital over the past several years,
Dr. Davenport acknowledged Methodist Hospitals
has come a long way. The hospitals’ financials as
well as its relationships with employees and the
community are greatly improved.
“The transformation has been nothing short of
remarkable but there’s no time to rest on our laurels,”
he said.
in 2014, Dr. Davenport’s goal is to continue building
on this foundation, maintaining the trust the hospital
has earned from all sectors.
Dr.DavenportgreetsMichellespencer,frontdeskreceptionist.
Off to a good start, the doctor’s reception from
business, religious and community leaders has
been overwhelmingly positive and supportive.
He attributes this to a general love of Methodist
Hospitals and a common desire for its success.
“i have drawn strength and inspiration from the
support i have received from our physicians and staff,
as well as our community,” Dr. Davenport said.
Dr. Davenport earned his Bachelor of arts degree
from Yale University with a pre-med concentration
and received his Doctor of Medicine from the
University of illinois Medical school. He and his
wife, loretta, have three grown children.
On the cover, Dr. Michael Davenport meets Northlake Campus

Noted bead artist Stephan
Wanger is joining the
foundation’s fund-raising
efforts for the six-weeks of
Mardi Gras with interactive
classes for schoolchildren
by day and a bevy of
Krewe parties by night.
Also featured for the first time in the region will be dozens of
Wanger’s famous bead mosaics, including his Guinness World
Record piece, which is on display at the Marshall J. Gardner
Center for the Arts in Miller. His other galleries will be located
in the former library in Crown Point and the Porter County
Museum.
Foundation Executive Director Rob Hanrahan said the artist,
who creates pieces from thousands of discarded Mardi
Gras beads in every shape and hue, is participating in the
foundation’s fund-raising effort with an exhibit entitled Bead
Town Northwest Indiana.
“Stephan is an extremely personable, extremely talented
artist who is eager to be working with us in Northwest
Indiana,” Hanrahan said. “This is very much a fund-raising
opportunity to assist us in raising money for underfunded
healthcare initiatives as well as a dynamic, community art
projects created to encompass all of our region.”
Throughout the 40 days of Mardi Gras, the three galleries
will be open to the public. At the same time, Wanger will be
working with students and volunteers to create two mosaics
depicting land- and streetscapes of Northwest Indiana.

Treating Adult Spinal Deformity
Relief is within your reach
Dr. Elian M. Shepherd
“Paying careful
attention to
your bone
health before
problems arise
can increase the
likelihood that
you will truly
enjoy your
later years.”
You’ve probably noticed the “bent-over”
posture of many elderly people. The most
likely cause of this is a condition called
adult spinal deformity, which mostly affects
older people.
Treatment Options
Preventive Measures
Many people simply accept having adult spinal
deformity as a fact of life. With people living
longer, we see more of this condition. But we
have the technology to address it.
The medical term for this condition is sagittal
spine imbalance. it is most often caused by
degenerative changes brought about by such
things as osteoporosis and the normal wear
and tear that affects the spine as we grow older.
Conservative therapy is the best place to
start when treating someone suffering from
adult spinal deformity. Therapy incorporates
pain medication, anti-inflammatory
medication, and physical therapy in the
form of lifestyle exercises.
You do not need to resign yourself to
developing adult spinal deformity in your
later years. a healthy lifestyle that incorporates
regular exercise can help prevent this and
other issues.
Not to be confused with hunchback, adult
spinal deformity causes the back to curve
forward. Those affected by this condition are
unable to stand straight and find themselves
facing the ground.
in an effort to compensate, affected individuals
may hyperextend their hips backward or
bend their knees. at this point, many people
decide to use a walker because this condition
negatively affects their balance.
Normally, well-balanced posture causes no
back pain. However, when we use
our back muscles to keep a
straight gaze and walk straight,
the muscles are forced to
work overtime, causing
back pain.
The level of pain brought about by this
condition differs from person to person.
While the majority of patients benefit from
conservative therapy, a surgical option is
available for those who simply can’t tolerate
the pain. However, not everyone is a candidate
for the surgery.
The surgical procedure takes between three
and five hours, and extensive post-surgery
physical therapy is required. studies show that
following corrective surgery and therapy, a
patient’s quality of life improves considerably.
it is important to pay attention to the quality
of your bones. Both women and men can
develop osteoporosis. so, women over 60 and
men past 70 should have bone density scans
performed. Because osteoporosis is preventable
and can be improved with treatment,
Methodist Hospitals now offers an
osteoporosis program.
We also know to take calcium supplements.
instead of taking them blindly, consult a
dietician who can decide how much you
need to take based on your diet.
Maintaining healthy Vitamin D levels is
critical. Unfortunately, many people have
a Vitamin D deficiency. even if you take
medication for osteoporosis, make sure to
have your Vitamin D and calcium levels
checked as well.
Paying careful attention to your bone
health before problems arise can increase
the likelihood that you will truly enjoy
your later years.

Director of the Methodist Hospitals Spine Care Center.

Just for Kids:
Unique orthopedic pediatric specialty available at Methodist!
Children’s orthopedics deals with all aspects
of children’s orthopedic or bone problems
from birth until maturity. There are many
advantages to bringing a child to a doctor with
this unique specialty.
Dr. Donald Kucharzyk
“Children have
special needs and
demands, with
growth plates
and growth
centers located
throughout
their bodies.”
i always tell parents, children can’t be treated
like little adults. Children have special needs
and demands, with growth plates and growth
centers located throughout their bodies.
Unless these areas are treated properly, children
can develop complications later in life.
Beyond meeting their developmental needs,
we treat children in a warm, non-threatening
environment. i wear golf shirts or sweaters and
come down to floor level to talk to my young
patients. even our cast saws are chosen for
being the most quiet available.
The third cause of intoeing, femoral
anteversion (pigeon toed), happens when
there is a turning inwards in the hip area.
intervention is very rare in these cases and in
fact, many runners have this condition because
the intoeing of the hips makes your muscles
work more efficiently!
Sports Injuries and Kids
Because kids are starting sports at younger
ages, the competition is getting more intense at
earlier ages.
We are seeing more serious injuries among
11- and 12-year-olds, such as torn anterior
cruciate ligaments (aCl) in the knee. aCl
reconstruction in children must be done
using a sparing procedure that saves the
growth plate.
When a young pitcher develops a shoulder
problem, it may seem like a rotator cuff injury.
But in a child, it’s a condition that affects the
growth plate of the shoulders.
With fellowship training in children’s
orthopedics, i am specifically qualified to
evaluate and treat musculoskeletal problems
in growing children. i am pleased to team
with Methodist Hospitals to offer this unique
specialty to its young patients.
Donald Kucharzyk, DO, has been practicing in
Northwest Indiana for 25 years and is one of two area
physicians who are fellowship trained in children’s
orthopedics. He was a clinical assistant professor for
four years at University of Chicago Children’s Hospital.
Common Children’s
Orthopedic Issues
a children’s orthopedist may be asked to see a
child born with developmental dysplasia of the
hip, which is a dislocation of the hip. infants
can also have hip clicks, where the hips are
unstable and actually make a clicking sound.
This is quite normal and must be discerned
from hip dysplasia.
also in the nursery, we see club
foot, which needs immediate,
aggressive attention. treatment
using a series of castings in the
nursery can potentially avoid the
need for surgery.
intoeing, where the feet are
pointing inward, can be caused by
three things. in infancy, the cause is in
the feet themselves, which is treatable
at that stage.
The next common reason behind
intoeing is the turning in of the legs
below the knees. Up to 90 percent of
these cases, known as tibial torsion, will
walk themselves out. The rest of these
cases require bracing, which usually
happens by age four. sometimes surgery is
required once the child is older.

Methodist is first and only Northwest Indiana hospital to offer
Gastric Pacemaker
When conservative solutions for gastroparesis
fail, Methodist Hospitals now offers an
effective surgical option: Medtronic enterra
Therapy. essentially a gastric pacemaker,
Medtronic enterra Therapy is a relatively new
device that provides electrical stimulation for
the stomach.
Dr. Harsh L. Dalal
Outside of indianapolis, Methodist Hospitals
is the only hospital in the state of indiana to
implant this device.
“In their
dedication to
helping patients, What is Gastroparesis?
Methodist is Gastroparesis is a debilitating stomach disorder.
Normally when we eat, the stomach contracts
always willing and pushes the food into the small intestine.
to try new But in people with this condition, the stomach
technologies and does not empty as it should, often causing
go that extreme nausea and vomiting.
extra mile.” The majority of gastroparesis cases i see occur
in patients who have uncontrolled diabetes.
Due to obesity and other factors, diabetes is on
the rise and we expect a corresponding increase
in the incidence of this disorder.
Conservative Therapies
The initial approach to treating gastroparesis is
conservative therapy. First, we advise patients
to eat six small meals a day so there is less
food in the stomach at one time. in some
cases, this proves to effective enough to avoid
further intervention.
if dietary changes are inadequate, the
medication Reglan may be prescribed.
However, in about 30 percent of cases, patients
develop neurological side effects such as
involuntary movements and facial spasms, and
Reglan must be discontinued. erythromycin
may be used to help stimulate contractions in
the stomach. This is only a short-term solution,
because erythromycin is an antibiotic.
A Long-Term Solution
Once conservative therapies are ruled out,
we can consider surgically implanting the
gastric pacemaker. a round of routine tests are
performed before an appointment is scheduled
with surgeon Dr. amead atassi. Dr. atassi and
i both play active roles in the surgery.
During the procedure, electrodes are implanted
into the muscle layer of the stomach. The
pacemaker then delivers electrical stimulation,
as necessary, to help the stomach to contract
and move food into the small intestine.
Patients remain hospitalized for two days
immediately after the procedure and are
subsequently followed closely. The only
post-surgical discomfort results from a small
incision, and patients should feel well
enough to resume normal activities within
a week or less.
it can take up to a month after the procedure
for patients to obtain full relief. so far, the
results of the gastric pacemaker procedures
performed at Methodist Hospitals have been
very encouraging. each of our patients have
experienced relief from nausea and vomiting
within a very short time.
Medtronic enterra Therapy is a relatively new
technology, which is why i elected to perform
the procedure at Methodist Hospitals. in their
dedication to helping patients, Methodist is
always willing to try new technologies and go
that extra mile.
We are already receiving patient inquiries
about enterra Therapy, which we expect
to increase as word spreads about its
availability in Northwest indiana. The
procedure and pacemaker are covered by
most insurance plans.

Most strokes can be prevented
Start Reducing Your Risk Now
although stroke can happen to anyone,
certain risk factors can increase the chance of
stroke. in fact, studies show that working with
a healthcare professional to reduce risk can
prevent most strokes.
Dr. Kevin Waldron
according to neurosurgeon Kevin Waldron,
MD, stroke prevention begins with
establishing a good relationship with a
physician and following up regularly.
“Find a doctor you trust,” Dr. Waldron said.
“everyone needs a doctor with whom they can
be open and honest.”
Dr. Mayumi Oka
topping the list of things you can do to
prevent stroke is blood pressure control. a
close second is controlling your exposure
to tobacco smoke. Dr. Waldron explained
that nicotine causes the body’s blood vessels
to constrict and shunt blood flow to the
heart and brain, where the vessels are also
constricted. This can lead to a stroke, heart
attack or brain hemorrhage.
High blood sugar is another treatable factor.
Your family physician can suggest a proper diet
and augment it with medication if required.
Those with diabetes should follow up with
their doctor every three to six months.
elevated lDl or “bad” cholesterol can
contribute to stroke. However, proper diet
combined with exercise can help reduce
it. if high lDl is an inherited condition,
medications can reduce this risk factor.
although exercising for 20 to 30 minutes five
days a week is generally recommended, there
is mounting evidence that smaller amounts
of exercise throughout the day can also be
beneficial. Dr. Waldron cautioned against
starting any exercise regimen before being
evaluated by your physician.
Finally, maintain a healthy weight and choose
a diet high in fiber and low in saturated
fats, cholesterol and processed simple
carbohydrates.
“sometimes it’s easy to know what to do but
difficult to follow through. it helps to have
a support person or group that can reinforce
these life decisions,” said Dr. Waldron.
While prevention is always preferable,
Methodist Hospitals provides state-of-the-art
stroke treatments in the event of stroke.
Using 3-D imaging via Ct angiogram and
physiologic imaging with Ct perfusion we
are able to obtain a clear picture of what’s
happening in the brain’s vessels.
intravenous tPa can be administered up to
four and a half hours following the initial onset
of a stroke. Methodist’s expanded capabilities
include an intra-arterial technique that removes
the clot directly from brain vessels.
at Methodist, the Penumbra system and the
tReVO stent retriever, which can be used
up to eight hours beyond the onset of stroke
symptoms, provides the capability to remove
clots from large vessels of the brain.
“The decision to use any procedure beyond the
standard iV tPa and time limit is dictated by
the individual circumstances of each patient,”
explained interventional neuroradiologist,
Mayumi Oka, M.D.
in spite of its preventability, more than 795
thousand americans suffer strokes every year.
Fortunately, Methodist Hospitals has the
most advanced technologies as well as strict
stroke protocols to offer the most up-to-date
treatment options.

New Technology Delivers Clearer Images
to Better Treat Coronary Artery Disease
in the summer of 2013, Methodist Hospitals
acquired the breakthrough infraredx catheter
technology to benefit our patients with
coronary artery disease.
Dr. Andre K. Artis
“When a patient
presents with
chest pain,
Infraredx
technology helps
us to determine
whether the
patient will
benefit from
further therapy.”
The technology gives us unprecedented
ability to look inside coronary arteries and
assess the blood vessel composition. This
newfound clarity changes the way we treat our
most vulnerable patients and assists us with
angioplasty and stent procedures.
Methodist Hospitals is among just a few area
hospitals to obtain the infraredx catheter,
which is relatively new to Northwest indiana
and the Chicago area.
Improved Diagnostic Ability
Thanks to this technology, cardiologists can
accurately identify what we call “vulnerable
plaque,” which is responsible for the majority
of heart attacks. looking at a blood vessel
through this catheter, we can clearly see the fat
on the blood vessel wall. We can assess how
much fat there is, where it’s deposited, and
the length of the blood vessel carrying the fat
deposit.
This new ability to identify the plaque type and
its vulnerability alerts us to patients who are
most at risk to suffer a heart attack. in turn,
we can be more aggressive in treating the risk
factors and following up with these patients.
Risk factors include elevated cholesterol,
diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity,
smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise.
When a patient presents with chest pain,
infraredx technology helps us to determine
whether the patient will benefit from
further therapy. We can also better choose
the most effective treatment, such as
angioplasty or stent.
Improved Procedures
infraredx technology helps us to identify the
healthiest tissue in the blood vessel for stent
placement. We can more easily determine
the best length and placement of the stent to
cover vulnerable areas. The improved visibility
this technology provides is also of value in
performing angioplasty procedures.
Opening Our Eyes to Better Ways
Our heightened awareness has prompted us
to question the old methods and seek better
or additional ways to perform interventions
as well as try to prevent heart attacks. We
are better able to answer pertinent questions
regarding the severity of the stenosis and the
likelihood of a rupture, in some cases either
avoiding surgery or identifying a greater
severity than previously thought.
Research Trials
inspired by this technology, new research
efforts are being made to answer the question
of how best to treat those patients who are
identified as most vulnerable.
One such research trial is being led by James
e. Muller, M.D. The inventor of the infraredx
catheter, Dr. Muller is the Founder, Chief
Medical Officer and Chairman of infraredx,
inc. Methodist is among a small group of
hospitals throughout the country participating
in this trial.
Cardiovascular medicine is dynamic and this
technology has shown us a new way of looking
at established concepts in the treatment of
heart disease. as far as we’ve come, we still have
a lot further to go.
Andre K. Artis, MD, FACC, a Methodist Physician
Group cardiologist, is the Codirector of the Heart and
Vascular Institute at Methodist Hospitals.

New heart disease, stroke guidelines provide
Individualized “Roadmap”
Connie Adams
Review the new
American Heart
Association and
American College
of Cardiology
guidelines online at
MethodistHospitals.org.
The american Heart association and the
american College of Cardiology have
developed new guidelines for the prevention
of heart attack and stroke.
Connie adams, Cardiovascular Clinical Nurse
specialist. “There is information available to
help people decrease their risk of having a
heart attack or stroke.”
in the past, much of the focus was on
secondary prevention, or steps to take
following a heart attack or stroke. The new
guidelines shift the focus to wellness and
prevention.
Medication.
in this patient-centered approach, the patient
functions as part of the team, partnering
with their healthcare provider to find the best
approach. Here are some key elements of the
new guidelines:
Know your risk.
The new risk calculator also provides a
clearer profile of who should be considered
for cholesterol-reducing medicine, such as
a statin. The old guidelines gave specific
cholesterol numbers for everyone to target.
“Numbers are just part of the picture now,”
adams said. “We’re looking at overall risk and
who’s going to benefit the most from these
medications. The patient will be involved in
the decision of what’s right for them.”
The new guidelines include a risk calculator to
assess a person’s 10-year risk of having a heart
attack or stroke. it also gives an indication
of lifetime risk, which is something everyone
should know.
Weight management.
Lifestyle management.
Understanding and managing your lifestyle
choices are key contributors to reducing the
risk of heart attack or stroke.
adams reminds everyone that heart disease
is still the number one killer of americans,
stroke is number four, and the risk factors for
both are very similar.
“lifestyle is the foundation of all we do,” said
“in Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy, or
Because obesity is reaching epidemic levels
in the U.s., and is a significant risk factor for

The Diabetes Self-Management Education program is
designed to help patients manage their diabetes by focusing
on seven key self-care behaviors, including healthy eating,
being active, monitoring, taking medications, problem solving,
reducing risks and healthy coping.
If you want to learn how to manage diabetes, ask
your physician for a referral to Methodist Hospitals’
Diabetes Center.
For more information about the Diabetes Center,
call 219-738-5802, or visit MethodistHospitals.org.
Because the procedure is non-invasive, the Gamma Knife
is often the best option for patients for whom traditional
brain surgery is not an option. The procedure is bloodless
and there is little discomfort for the patient. The Gamma
Knife procedure is performed on an out-patient basis, and
offers patients quicker recovery times.
It is an effective treatment for Metastatic Tumors,
Arteriovenous/Vascular Malformations, Meningiomas,
Acoustic Neuromas, Pituitary and Pineal Tumors, Glial and
Astrocytoma Tumors and Trigeminal Neuralgia (facial pain).
Potential candidates for Gamma Knife radiosurgery
or those seeking a second opinion should call
Methodist Hospitals’ Gamma Knife Center at
219-757-7521.
For more information about the Breast Care Center,

GERD Center
Spine Care Center
Lung Care Center
Methodist Hospitals specialists are skilled in distinguishing
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) from other
disorders that may cause similar symptoms, and employ
advanced treatments for meaningful relief.
Stop the pain and start living again. Methodist’s Spine Care
Center gives patients mobility and freedom from pain, so
they can return to healthier, active lives.
Methodist Hospitals’ Lung Care Center is a
multidisciplinary resource for consultation, second opinion,
diagnosis and ongoing treatment for patients with lung
disease.
Our GERD Center employs the latest, most reliable
technologies and techniques to accurately diagnose
GERD, including EGD, or Upper Endoscopy, Esophageal
Manometry, and Bravo pH Monitoring.
GERD treatment and management includes lifestyle
changes, medications and in some cases, medical
procedures. While medications may relieve GERD
symptoms, they do not correct the reflux completely.
For patients seeking more permanent solutions, the
GERD Center offers Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication
(TIF), an innovative, minimally invasive procedure, and
Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, the standard surgical
treatment for GERD.
For more information about the GERD Center,
call 219-757-7534, or visit MethodistHospitals.org.
A cornerstone of the Spine Care Center is Priority Consult,
a pioneering patient management system that improves
the patient experience. The Priority Consult process utilizes
digital technology to organize and review the patient’s
medical history, clinical status and any completed tests
and imaging in the early stage of evaluation. This allows
the spine care team to determine the most appropriate
course of treatment and direct patients to the most
appropriate care, from non-surgical to surgical treatments
– all without the patient coming into the Center.
Many patients require no surgical intervention. Priority
Consult enables patients to avoid the time and expense of
unnecessary surgeon appointments, and get meaningful
relief much more rapidly.
For more information about the Spine Care Center,
call 888-549-5648, or visit MethodistHospitals.org.
It brings together the experience and expertise of skilled
physicians, including pulmonologists, radiologists,
thoracic surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists and
pathologists, who work with each patient’s primary care
physician to diagnose, plan and execute the appropriate
treatment based on National Comprehensive Cancer
Network (NCCN) guidelines. Our Lung Care Nurse
Navigator, a specialist in pulmonary care, guides patients
through the treatment process.
In addition to Low-Dose CT Lung Screening for those at
high risk of developing lung cancer or other lung diseases,
the Lung Care Center is equipped with two of the most
advanced lung cancer diagnostic technologies, including
Northwest Indiana’s first Electromagnetic Navigation
Bronchoscopy (ENB) and Northwest Indiana’s most
advanced Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) technology.
For more information about the Lung Care Center,
call 219-757-7212, or visit MethodistHospitals.org.

Florence’s Triumph:
METHODIST HOSPITALS
One woman’s journey to renewal
Just over a year ago, Florence struble stood five feet five
inches tall and weighed 267 pounds. she hated what
she saw in the mirror, hated how people looked at her,
and she knew her own health was at risk.
“The program offers all kinds of support,” Florence
said. “You can always reach out to your group and
the staff. i couldn’t imagine a better place to have
this surgery.”
Florence’s obesity was at least partially responsible for a
host of issues, including diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma
and high blood pressure. Her doctor told her that she
would keep going downhill unless she got her weight
under control. as Florence put it, “i was not ready to
be six feet under at 61 years old.”
Now, just ten months later, Florence has lost 100
pounds. she’s at her target weight of 168 pounds, and
has energy to burn. Her daily intake of pills
for medical problems has gone from 15
to one.
losing weight would take a tremendous commitment
to making some serious, permanent lifestyle changes.
Was she prepared to do what it takes?
Ready for a change, Florence consulted with Dr. James
siatras at Methodist’s Northwest indiana Center for
Bariatric surgery. she felt an immediate rapport with
Dr. siatras and liked the Center’s compassionate,
realistic approach.
“They really tell it like it is,” Florence said. “i had
to change my way of life, and it would be a lot of
hard work.”
Florence decided to have weight loss surgery. The
prospect was a little scary. But she knew it would be
worth it to reach her goal of improving her health and
becoming active again.
she was accepted into the program and began a diet
and exercise regimen. eating small meals, six times a
day and exercising five days a week took some getting
used to. But before long, she began to see results.
Following her new routine, Florence saw the
beginnings of a new body shape. exercising gradually
became easier, and she stopped running out of breath
so quickly. Her energy level began to rise, and her
blood pressure went down. By then, her only question
was, “Why didn’t i do this sooner?”
after months of preparation and steady weight loss, the
day of surgery finally arrived.
“When you get to this point, you are on the verge of
a new life,” she said. “it was exciting – having the new
me, my new life!”
The surgery went well but Florence understood that the
real challenge was to maintain her new lifestyle forever.
she continues to follow the program, adhering to the
diet, exercising, attending meetings, and following up
at the Center for Bariatric surgery.
“take what you’re doing seriously and fight like you’ve
never fought before. even if you fall back a pace or two,
get back into it. You can do it!”
she vows never to go back to where
she was.
“For anyone considering weight loss
surgery, it’s important to understand
this is not a quick fix but a lifetime
commitment,” Florence said.

Dr. Mary Ella Kenefake
Children are among the
most susceptible to suffer
respiratory problems during
the winter months. Two
common conditions are
Respiratory Synitcal Virus
(RSV) and Reactive Airway
Disease or Asthma.
RSV, which causes an
infection in the lower airways, is most active
between November and April. The virus affects
people of all ages, but is especially severe in infants.
Symptoms include significant nasal congestion,
coughing and difficulty breathing. Typically, infants
with RSV will have a fever and difficulty eating
due to their nasal congestion. This age group
occasionally may be admitted to the hospital
for care.
While there is no specific treatment, the best
therapy is supportive with saline drops in the nose
and bulb suctioning to help reduce congestion.
The virus will generally run its course in five to
seven days.
Reactive Airway Disease (RAD) and asthma are
considered similar conditions. When young children
have asthma-like wheezing, especially with viral
illnesses, we usually classify it as Reactive
Airway Disease. Once children approach preschool
age, RAD may declare itself as asthma if it
continues to occur.
Most respond well to occasional albuterol inhalers
as treatment for RAD and asthma. More severe
cases of asthma require the use of a controller
inhaler, which is a daily medication.
Asthma is especially serious in winter months
when viruses like RSV are common because these
conditions can worsen asthma. It’s especially
important for children with asthma to regularly take
their medications, wash their hands frequently, get
a flu shot and avoid cigarette smoke exposure.
If you notice your child is struggling to breathe or
using their belly or chest muscles to breathe,
it is important to seek medical help immediately.
Mary Ella Kenefake, MD, is a Methodist Hospitals
emergency medicine physician.

We’re Holding a Jacket for You.
Dr. Mary Ella Kenefake
Children are among the
most susceptible to suffer
respiratory problems during
the winter months. Two
common conditions are
Respiratory Synitcal Virus
(RSV) and Reactive Airway
Disease or Asthma.
RSV, which causes an
infection in the lower airways, is most active
between November and April. The virus affects
people of all ages, but is especially severe in infants.
Symptoms include significant nasal congestion,
coughing and difficulty breathing. Typically, infants
with RSV will have a fever and difficulty eating
due to their nasal congestion. This age group
occasionally may be admitted to the hospital
for care.
While there is no specific treatment, the best
therapy is supportive with saline drops in the nose
and bulb suctioning to help reduce congestion.
The virus will generally run its course in five to
seven days.
Reactive Airway Disease (RAD) and asthma are
considered similar conditions. When young children
have asthma-like wheezing, especially with viral
illnesses, we usually classify it as Reactive
Airway Disease. Once children approach preschool
age, RAD may declare itself as asthma if it
continues to occur.
Most respond well to occasional albuterol inhalers
as treatment for RAD and asthma. More severe
cases of asthma require the use of a controller
inhaler, which is a daily medication.
We can never have too many helping hands and smiling faces. Volunteering is a wonderful way to
make a difference in the life of someone else. Methodist Hospitals’ Volunteer Services offer unique
opportunities for anyone 15 years or older to share their time, talents and interests to support our
mission. As a volunteer, you’ll be providing vital support and assisting with many of the services that
contribute to the care and comfort of our patients.
For more information on volunteer opportunities, call Northlake Campus,
Gary: 219-886-4969 or Southlake Campus, Merrillville: 219-738-5622

Dr. Mary Ella Kenefake
Children are among the
most susceptible to suffer
respiratory problems during
the winter months. Two
common conditions are
Respiratory Synitcal Virus
(RSV) and Reactive Airway
Disease or Asthma.
RSV, which causes an
infection in the lower airways, is most active
between November and April. The virus affects
people of all ages, but is especially severe in infants.
Symptoms include significant nasal congestion,
coughing and difficulty breathing. Typically, infants
with RSV will have a fever and difficulty eating
due to their nasal congestion. This age group
occasionally may be admitted to the hospital
for care.
While there is no specific treatment, the best
therapy is supportive with saline drops in the nose
and bulb suctioning to help reduce congestion.
The virus will generally run its course in five to
seven days.
Reactive Airway Disease (RAD) and asthma are
considered similar conditions. When young children
have asthma-like wheezing, especially with viral
illnesses, we usually classify it as Reactive
Airway Disease. Once children approach preschool
age, RAD may declare itself as asthma if it
continues to occur.
Most respond well to occasional albuterol inhalers
as treatment for RAD and asthma. More severe
cases of asthma require the use of a controller
inhaler, which is a daily medication.
We can never have too many helping hands and smiling faces. Volunteering is a wonderful way to
make a difference in the life of someone else. Methodist Hospitals’ Volunteer Services offer unique
opportunities for anyone 15 years or older to share their time, talents and interests to support our
mission. As a volunteer, you’ll be providing vital support and assisting with many of the services that
contribute to the care and comfort of our patients.
