PREVIEW : PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN - SM CAEN
Paris Saint-Germain - SM Caen Feature Preview
Still digesting their Champions League elimination, Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain take to the field again on Saturday
afternoon with Caen the visitors to the Parc des Princes. PSG exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage for the fourth
consecutive season, going down 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday to crash out 3-2 on aggregate to Manchester City.
PSG boss Laurent Blanc came under fire for sending his side out in an untried 3-5-2 formation as the club attempted to reach the last
four in Europe for the first time since the Qatari takeover in 2011. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had missed a first leg penalty, said: "In the
first half we played with a new system and what happened, happened. If it had gone well, nobody would say anything, and now
people will say we gave it away. The second half was better, when we reverted to our normal tactics, but we gave away two games. I
think we are a better team, but we lost tonight and we drew 2-2 at home, so all the best to Manchester City."
Blanc accepted the blame: "The formation? We analysed the first leg and we decided to solidify our centre of defence to prevent their
attackers getting the better of us. But we got ourselves in trouble. Then there was the injury to Thiago Motta, that meant we had to
change again. We had big ambitions, but we fell just short."
PSG will hope to have Motta fit for the Coupe de la Ligue final against Lille on April 23 at the Stade de France after the Italian
international was forced off with a thigh complaint. Blanc had hoped for a "miracle" meaning Marco Verratti would have been available
in Manchester, but the midfielder continued to be plagued by a nagging groin injury. Blanc will at least have David Luiz and Blaise
Matuidi available again after domestic suspension.
With no more European football, the aim for Blanc's squad now is to replicate last season's unprecedented domestic quadruple. Caen
is PSG's final game before a Coupe de France semi-final trip to Lorient on Tuesday evening.
PSG having big knockout matches to play could be of advantage to a Caen side that has managed only four points from five league
games, sliding from fourth to ninth in the table in the process.
Veteran midfielder Nicolas Seube said: "For them they'll consider going out of Europe to be a failure as they targeted winning the
competition. It's a pity too for French footballµ. For us, there was no ideal solution, whether they won or not. We mustn't forget that
PSG still have important games coming up with a Coupe de France semi-final and the final of the Coupe de la Ligue."
Last season Caen recovered from 2-0 down in the closing minutes to draw 2-2. PSG played the final stages with only nine players on
the field following a series of injuries.
"There's very little chance that what happened last season will happen again. At 11 v 11 we'd have lost that match every day of the
week. In the end we were a whisker away from winning it. It's true that at that time there was a state of euphoria at our club as
everything was going our way. Do we talk about in the dressing room? Sometimes, but usually for a laugh. What happened last
season will not help us prepare for this weekend's clash."

Week 34
Paris Saint-Germain - SM Caen
Paris Saint-Germain - SM Caen
- HISTORY: PSG have hosted Caen 14 times in the top division. PSG have won 11 times, Caen once, and there have been two
draws.
- Caen's sole win was 1-0 in December 2007. Since then PSG have won three times and there has been one draw.
- Last season the clubs drew 2-2 in Week 25. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (2') and Ezequiel Lavezzi (40') scored for PSG, while Emiliano Sala
(89') and Hervé Bazile (90+2') rescued a point for Caen. PSG conceded their goals when they had only nine men on the field
following injuries to Yohan Cabaye, Marquinhos, Blaise Matuidi, Serge Aurier and Lucas. The game took place just before the
Champions League round of 16 first leg against Chelsea.
- THIS SEASON: In Week 19 PSG ran out 3-0 winners at Caen. Angel Di Maria (16' and 50') and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (36') scored for
PSG.
- PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN:
- GENERAL: Paris Saint-Germain set a new record when they wrapped up the Ligue 1 title with eight games to spare. The previous
record was held by Olympique Lyonnais, who won the title with five games left in 2007.
- PSG have 83 points from 33 matches, giving them an unassailable 28-point lead over Lyon in second place. They have won 26,
drawn five and lost two of their games to date. They need seven points from their final five games to set a new record for the most
points in a Ligue 1 season and beat their own mark of 89 set in 2013-14.
- This time last season, Paris were top with 68 points, three points clear of Lyon in second.
- The capital club have been top of the table since beating GFC Ajaccio 2-0 in Week 2. In contrast, last season they were not top at all
until late March.
- Last time out, PSG beat Guingamp 2-0 with Lucas (50' pen. and 71') scoring the goals.
- PSG line-up v. Guingamp (4-3-3): Trapp (Sirigu 46'); van der Wiel, Marquinhos (Rimane 88'), Kimpembe, Kurzawa; Nkunku,
Stambouli, Matuidi; Lucas, Augustin (Meïté 90+1'), Ongenda
- Laurent Blanc's side suffered their first L1 home reverse of the season in Week 31 when they went down 2-0 to Monaco. Vagner
Love (65') and Fabinho (68' pen.) scored for Monaco.
- In Week 30, PSG sealed the title with a 9-0 romp at Troyes. It was the biggest ever away win in top-flight history, beating 9-1
victories for Strasbourg at Mulhouse in 1936 and Rouen at Valenciennes in 1938.
- It was not the biggest win in PSG's history, falling short of their 10-0 victory against Côte-Chaude in the Coupe de France in 1994,
but it was the first time a team had won by nine goals in the top flight since AS Monaco beat Girondins de Bordeaux 9-0 in January
1986.
- They have been beaten just four times, by Real Madrid, Lyon, Monaco and Manchester City in 49 games altogether this season.
- Paris set a new top-flight record for the longest unbeaten run, going 36 Ligue 1 games without losing between a 3-2 defeat away to
Girondins de Bordeaux on March 15 last year and their 2-1 loss at Lyon on February 28.
- That was a new club record, bettering the previous mark of 27 top-flight games without defeat set in 1993-94, and beat the league
record of FC Nantes, who went 32 games unbeaten in 1994-95.
- PSG also equalled the old club record for the longest unbeaten league run set in the same season by going 27 games without
losing, like in 1993-94.
- Paris have scored 83 goals in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other side. Lyon had the second-best attack coming into the
weekend, with 54 goals scored.
- PSG have scored in all bar four league games so far, the exceptions being their 0-0 draws at Angers SCO in Week 16, at home to
LOSC in Week 26 and at home to Montpellier Hérault SC in Week 29, as well as the 2-0 home loss to Monaco in Week 31. They have
scored three goals or more on 14 separate occasions, netting nine against Troyes, five in wins against Toulouse FC, Olympique

Lyonnais and Angers SCO, four in defeats of FC Nantes, AS Saint-Etienne, Troyes, Stade de Reims and Nice, and three against AS
Monaco, EA Guingamp, Nice, SM Caen and FC Lorient.
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the leading scorer in Ligue 1 with 30 goals, all of which have come in his last 24 appearances. Edinson Cavani
has scored 14 while Ángel Di María has nine and Lucas Moura has eight.
- In all competitions, Ibrahimovic has 39 goals. He has scored 22 goals in 21 appearances in 2016. Cavani has 19, Di María has 13
and Lucas 12.
- Ibrahimovic and Di María have each provided 11 assists, more than any other player in Ligue 1. Blaise Matuidi and Lucas have
provided five assists, while Javier Pastore has laid on four goals.
- Ibrahimovic overtook Pauleta as PSG's all-time record goal-scorer when he netted twice in the 2-1 win over Marseille in October to
move on to 110 goals for the club.
- The Swede has this season overtaken George Weah as PSG's all-time top scorer in Europe and has 105 Ligue 1 goals after
passing Mustapha Dahleb's top-flight record of 85 for the capital club.
- The capital club have the best defensive record in the division, having conceded only 18 goals in 33 games thus far. They have kept
18 clean sheets, more than any other side in the division. Their 2-2 draw at home to Girondins de Bordeaux in Week 5 , the 2-1 defeat
at Lyon in Week 28, and the 2-0 home loss to Monaco in Week 31 are the only games in which they have conceded more than once.
- No PSG player has started every Ligue 1 game this season. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp has started 32 of the 33 games.
- Adrien Rabiot (v LOSC Lille, Wk 1) is the only PSG player to have been sent off this season.
- HOME FORM: PSG have the best home record in Ligue 1. They have won 12, drawn three and lost one of their 16 matches at the
Parc des Princes, collecting 36 points. They have scored 45 goals and conceded 12 in front of their own fans.
- Laurent Blanc's side have beaten GFC Ajaccio (2-0, Wk 1), EA Guingamp (3-0, Wk 7), Olympique de Marseille (2-1, Wk 9), AS
Saint-Etienne (4-1, Wk 11), Toulouse FC (5-0, Wk 13), ESTAC Troyes (4-1, Wk 15), Olympique Lyonnais (5-1, Wk 18), SC Bastia

and Monaco (0-2, Wk 31). They were unbeaten in 23 home games in all competitions this season before losing to Monaco.
- Paris boasted the best home record in Ligue 1 last season, winning 15 and drawing four of 19 games at the Parc des Princes and
picking up 49 points.
- Olympique Lyonnais (1-1, Wk 6), AS Monaco (1-1, Wk 9), Montpellier Hérault SC (0-0, Wk 19) and SM Caen (2-2, Wk 25) were the
only teams to avoid defeat away to PSG last season.
- Laurent Blanc's side were unbeaten in 34 home Ligue 1 games in between going down 2-1 to Stade Rennais FC on May 7, 2014
and 2-0 to Monaco in Week 31 of this season. Ironically, PSG secured the 2013-14 title that night they lost to Rennes.
- Paris have lost only two of their last 66 home Ligue 1 games, a run going back to November 2012.
- Last season, they lost just once in 28 home matches in all competitions. That was a 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of their
Champions League quarter-final. Since the start of last season, they have lost just once in 51 home games in all competitions.
- PSG's official average attendance of 46,190 is the highest in Ligue 1.

Paris Saint-Germain
- Promoted to Ligue 1 in their present guise in 1974, PSG are in their 42nd consecutive top-flight season.
- PSG's 2015-16 title triumph is their sixth and their fourth in a row (1986, '94, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016). They have won nine Coupes
de France (1982, '83, '93, '95, '98, 2004, '06, '10 and '15), and five Coupes de la Ligue (1995, '98, 2008, '14 and '15) after completing
an unprecedented domestic quadruple (with the Trophée des Champions) in the 2014-15 campaign.
- PSG ended last season on 83 points, eight clear of second-placed Olympique Lyonnais and 12 ahead of AS Monaco in third.
- PSG became only the second French club to win a European trophy when they beat Rapid Vienna to the 1996 UEFA Cup Winners
Cup' title.
- PSG play at the 48,712-seat Parc des Princes. The ground is being refurbished for EURO 2016.
- Laurent Blanc was named coach in June 2013 to replace Real Madrid-bound Carlo Ancelotti. He won the treble of Ligue 1 (with a
record points tally of 89), Coupe de la Ligue and Trophée des Champions in his first season and extended his contract to 2016. He

with 28 goals. His 30-goal haul in 2012-13 made him the first player since Olympique de Marseille's Jean-Pierre Papin in 1989-90 to
score 30 in a single Ligue 1 season.
- PSG broke the French transfer record in July 2013, paying Napoli a reported 64 million euros for Cavani.
SM Caen
- Founded in 1913, Stade Malherbe de Caen are now in their second consecutive season in the top flight (15th in total) after two years
spent in Ligue 2. They finished third in Ligue 2 in 2013-14 after sealing promotion on the final day.
- Last season, Caen finished 13th, nine points clear of the drop zone and three shy of a top-ten finish. Caen first appeared among the
elite in 1988 and their best-ever finish is fifth, a feat achieved in 1992.
- The Normandy side have never won a major trophy, although they have twice been second-tier champions, in 1996 and 2010. They
were runners-up in the Coupe de la Ligue in 2005, losing 2-1 to Strasbourg in the final.
- Caen have appeared in Europe only once, losing 4-3 on aggregate to Spanish side Real Zaragoza in the UEFA Cup first round in
1992-93.
- The name 'Malherbe' comes from François de Malherbe, a 16th-century poet who was born in the Normandy city.
