Dearest Members & Friends,
Summer is a time of rest and recreation. Days are long and warm lending, themselves to
lounging and lingering into twilight in the company of friends and family. It seems that alongside
our educational counterparts, all professional schedules slow while recreational schedules expand.
Most churches change their time of worship, the number of worship experiences held, and spiritual
development opportunities. Yes, there is VBS and mission trips, but many of the meetings and
studies are disbanded through the summer for want of participation.
We have a jewel in our area which leaned into this slowed reality to foster, originally, an
opportunity to gather and train teachers of Sunday School. This proved the perfect time for adults
from the surrounding rural countryside to enrich their spiritual life and the Chautauqua Institute
was born. Since that time Chautauqua has expanded to be a more general adult educational movement bringing speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, preachers and other specialists of the day together through the weeks
of the summer. Unfortunately stay and participation in the events of the Chautauqua Institute are largely out of reach for most.
Thankfully, however, over time this summer emphasis has also turned into a verb: “to Chautauqua”. “ To Chautauqua” is not
only a historical Methodist summer event of spiritual development, but something still available to all of us. Theodore Roosevelt called it “the most American thing in America” at one point. Woodrow Wilson during the depths of World War I saw it as
“an integral part of the national defense.” And William Jennings Bryan deemed it a “potent human factor in molding the mind
of the nation.”
Let us use this summer to feed our hunger for education, spiritual development, culture, and entertainment. Let us not
lay aside our need to grow during these months, but seize the opportunity in this time to discuss, read, and participate in ways
we are simply unable to during the rest of the year.
It is summer and so it is time to Chautauqua.
Yours In Christ,
Pastor Daven

Expenses are showing as running a little high due to the salaries of the
Visiting Pastor, Office Manager, and Youth Coordinator being proportionately heavy in the 1st half of the year. There was also an additional
expense to prepare the Retreat Room to be rented out.
YTD we have paid $12,040 of the budgeted $41,280 of our Ministry
Shares (29%). District Superintendent Wayne Butler came to the April
finance meeting to thank Kenmore UMC for the steps that have been
taken to get back on track on our Ministry Shares.
PIECEMAKERS
Here in WNY, summertime is a precious commodity filled with sunny days and starry nights.
Neighbors catch up with each other over the backyard fence once they step out from behind the
closed doors of winter. Vacationing families
make for lighter rush hour traffic, and tensions
melt. Concerts, picnics, and good moods abound.
It’s such an idyllic time that we almost feel like
the world stands still for a little while.
But it doesn’t. The demands of running the
church never stop. There are still bills to be paid,
chores to be done, people to feed, and needs to be
met, and we can’t do these things without you.
That is why we strongly encourage everyone to
keep their tithes and offerings consistent over the
next several months. Few things feel as good as
knowing you’ve done your part, so please make
this a priority.
Thank you, and enjoy your summer to the fullest!

SECOND SERVICE
PRAISE BAND
1. We will continue meeting on Friday mornings all through the summer with the exception of the week of July 11th – 15th because
many of our gals are involved in VBS and we
want to support this special time for our children and families.
We had a long discussion regarding our "welcome to summer"
pot luck luncheon with the Craftsmen in June AND the group
decided the schedule was too busy and we would like to change
this tradition to a "WELCOME BACK BASH" (catch-up time
and shared luncheon) on Friday, September 9th in Fellowship
Hall at 11:15 following our work sessions. Details will be in the
next newsletter and the September "News Sheets”.
2. A joy to share…..one of the pastors who attends the Course of
Study program at our church, was very interested in our ministry!
Rev. Jodie Haier from the Booneville UMC will be bringing
some of her quilters to meet us, hear our stories and see our
work on Friday July 29th. They will also be sharing lunch with
us! Mark your calendars for this fun morning.
3. The church was beautifully adorned with our red, white and
blue quilts on Memorial Day Sunday where they were blessed
and soon on their way to Annual Conference. From there, they
were taken to Ft. Drum and their new owners. Our conference
delegates will take them to conference and Fran Hemstreet and
Heather and Greg Stierheim will take them the rest of their journey. Our connectional system works miracles!!
4. An invitation – for those who might be free in the summer to
join with us, please feel to drop in on Friday mornings and share
in our work and our joy. If you have any questions during the
summer, please give Cynthia Bell a call at 716-877-4996.
Have a wonder-filled summer!

We are still looking for musicians and singers and
welcome anyone who loves to sing a joyful song
until the Lord! We usually meet every month to
practice on the first Monday at 7:00 pm and third
Sunday right after the second service at the
church. You can contact me through the church
office or just show up at a practice.
We are a really fun group so why don't you give
us a try!

VAGABOND NEWS
The Vagabond travelers have several exciting trips planned for the "warmer"
months of June-August. On Tuesday afternoon June 7 we will be going on the
Open-Air Autobus Historical/
Architectural Tour of Buffalo, departing
from Larkin Square. After the tour, we
will have many choices for dinner at the
Food Trucks located in the Square on
Tuesdays. We will car pool from the
church for this event.
From June 21-24, Vagabonds will be
traveling to Québec City and the Thousand Islands on a 4-day excursion including a cruise on the St. Lawrence River
with visits to Singer and Boldt Castles
and overnight at the Harbor Hotel in
Clayton. Then on to Québec City for two
nights at the Clarendon Hotel, with guided exploration of the Upper and Lower
Towns, tour of the Beaupré Coast with
visits to Montmorency Falls, the basilica
of Sainte Anne de Beaupré, the Copper
Shop, a French-Canadian style dinner
and entertainment at a Sugar Shack, and
"free" time to explore the artists on Rue
du Trésor, taste a crêpe at Au Petit Coin
Breton, enjoy a Calèche (horse-drawn
buggy) Ride, or stroll on the
boardwalk next to the Chateau Frontenac.
Wednesday evening August
3 is our "theater" night to
attend the performance of the Andrew
Lloyd Webber musical Evita, the thrilling
story about the life of Argentina's Eva
Peron, at MusicalFare (Daemen College),
followed by ice cream at Anderson's after
the show. Some will car-pool from the
church and others will meet at the theater
for this event.
In late August, look for information about
a Fall trip to Letchworth State Park with
lunch at the Glen Iris Inn.

I wish to thank the Staff Parish Relations Committee for the very
nice ‘Plaque of Appreciation’ presented upon my re-retirement on May 8th.
Also I deeply appreciate the book of
letters that you as members of the congregation gathered and were presented

gracious in their expressions of

2016 LAY HONOREES:
SALLY AND DICK GROVE
as presented to the congregation,
written by Joyce Love)
Each year we have the opportunity to honor a faithful lay person
in our congregation by sending them
to a special United Methodist Laity
Awards Banquet. I have been given
the pleasure of announcing this year’s honoree. Actually, I
have double the pleasure.
This year, we have chosen a couple. They are both
long time members of our church. She has been a Trustee, and
Chairman of the Mission Committee. He was member of the
Staff-Parish Committee. She has served a President of the
United Methodist Women and he has been an Usher. She
taught in our Nursery School and he spent many hours delivering items to the Shalom Zone and the Food Pantry.
But don’t think their church activities always sent them
separate ways. On Friday mornings, they both spent time in
the church basement - she as a quilter, he as a craftsman. Also,
they were faithful members of the Corinthian Class. If you
think you have guessed the identity of our honorees, here is the
clincher. She is a Master Pie Baker and he is the Popcorn Man
who brought his popcorn wagon to some of our festivities.
They have gifted us with other labors of love as she created
beautiful quilts and other stitchery to adorn our church, and he
worked diligently to wash every window he could reach to
make sure they glistened. Finally, we can not fail to mention
their years of service as host and hostess of the Methodist
House at Chautauqua.
With love and appreciation, I announce our honorees
for 2016 - Sally and Dick Grove. Sally, please come forward.
(Aren’t you glad you’ve changed pew positions? This is a
much shorter walk.) Those of you who will be heading down
to the chicken barbeque can also thank Sally who instigated the
very first one!

FAITH N FILM
Monday, June 13 at 7:00 pm Parlor
(Change in day due to Church Council on the 3 rd Monday)
The Lady in the Van - Some true stories make the best stories. Miss Mary Shepherd, or "Miss S.," was an eccentric
woman who lived out of a van. English playwright Alan
Bennett met her in the early 1970's when it broke down near
his home. With complaints by neighbors about her being
parked on the street and interruptions to his work because he
often witnessed children tease her, Bennett allowed her to
live temporarily in the van in his front garden. After Bennett
befriended her and started to see the world through her eyes,
he allowed her to stay until her death 15 years later.
*CROSSROADS

“The Wired Word”. The final class will be on June 12th.
