THE SEVENTH ANNUAL SMACKDOWN IN JACKTOWN
MICHIGAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT
By Greg Zimmerman
It happened again! The no man’s land that is Jackson, Michigan became a scene of horrendous brutality as some of the most ferocious warriors arrived to battle it out. The da Vinci Primary School gym was the site
of the 7th annual Smackdown in Jacktown. The talent pool was deep, with
players crossing international borders, from Toronto, and state lines, from
Texas, to attend.
Festivities kicked off at high noon with a great first round. Our 15 players broke down to 3 four players tables and 1 three player table. The first
round saw Jon Kurylczuk and Ross Carpenter, from the hometown, and
Charles Soong and Cavebear Stroud, from Toronto, draw first blood in the
win column.
The second round saw Texas represented in the win column by Daniel
Griego. Big Bruiser Jon K. secured his spot in the final with a decisive win.
Secret War upstart Sid Flores, from Jacktown, held on to a timed out victory. And The Chairman, Braz King, began his quest for the unconquered
title.
Round 3 saw Daniel
secure his spot in the final
by coming out on top of the
best of the best of the tournament. Sid hammered out
another timed out nail-biter.
And New Hero, hometown
boys Kyle Smith and Josh
Doyle made a last ditch effort for points by winning
their games.
The Final Round
matched up Jon Kurylczuk, Daniel Griego, Charles
Soong, and Braz King. The
tactics ran hot with all players vying for the title. But,
the field couldn’t stand up to
The Chairman’s fu. After 90

minutes, Braz claimed his
first Smackdown in Jacktown Final Brawl Title!
The New Heroes
tournament was held in
John-ny “Red” Merrill’s
game cave. Refreshments
abounded as 7 of us attempted to usurp the New
Hero master. Tim Linden
and John Merrill stuck it to
the field in the first round
and the scene was set.
Charles Soong, Daniel
Griego, Shane Snavley, Greg Zimmerman, Braz King, and Cavebear
Stroud would have to enjoy the atmosphere and the refreshments.
The second round saw John win decisively, with Greg Zimmerman
eeking out a timed out win. John was crowned the New Hero champion
with his formidable Syndicate deck.
Thanks to everyone who came out! It was a great time, with great
games , and greater people. Until next year….. Kiiii-Yaaaaah!!!!!!!
Part of the fun of the 2010 Smackdown event was the rousing
back and forth between the masters of Shadowfist
Here is a sampling of the best lines that came from the weekend:
“It’s pronounced
‘Canada’.” – Greg
Zimmerman
“No Tim, don’t look
in that hole!” – Greg
Zimmerman
“She can’t fit
two balls in
her mouth.” –
Charles Soong
“So, put it in
my face.”
– Braz King
“Santa Claus
trumps all.”
– Shane Snavly
“I ain’t got dick in
my hand.”
– Shane Snavley
“Reading the card is over-rated, just go by the picture.” – John Merrill
“It’s pronounced ‘America’.” – Jeff “Cavebear” Stroud
“Are you guys done already?” – Charles Soong
“Shut up!” – Daniel Griego

fewer than three times.

weekend.
Bottom right: John Merrill looks on as Kyle Smith attemps to flex his mighty
Shadowfist muscles in round 2 of the Final Brawl.
This deck began with
the simple goal of getting
Song, the Little Dragon
into play with a Walk of a
Thousand Steps and a Fortune of the Turtle on him.
It became a real deck
when I added more evasion
and decided to try big sites
and healing effects for defence and rely on constant
attack and evasion to
win.
The deck did okay but
often I had too many
healing effects at my disposal with nothing to heal
and too many Songs in
hand or not enough power
to play the Walk when I
needed it.
A couple of Walk of a
Thousand Steps were replaced with Blade Palms,
and a couple of Songs were
replaced with Hiroshi Katas. Some big body sites
were replaced with standard defensive sites and the
deck has recently won the
Toronto Proving Ground
League final.

CASTING CALL:
THE ASCENDED
Draco
Between the new Batman franchise and Terminator 4, Christian
Bale has build up some street cred
as an action movie star lately. Add
to it his ability to immerse himself
(read as: lose grasp on reality)
with his characters and you’ve got
a great recipe for the Ascended’s
top trained killer.
Kinoshita
With the tragic death of the
physically and thematically
perfect choice of Pat Morita in
2005, Gordon Liu comes in a
close second to bring to life
the role of the elderly chairperson of the Lodge’s early days
in 19th Century China.
Raven Li
She watched the Unspoken
name revert back into animal
form and is now trying to hold
the Lodge together with duct
tape and bailing wire. Sounds
like a job for the White Queen.
It’s time to give Anne Hathaway
a shot at being the bad guy for
once.
CASTING CALL:
THE ASCENDED
The Unspoken Name (Lodge)
Fans were inconsolable when cult
favorite Tim Roth was not cast as the
young Tarkin in Episode III. Perhaps
giving him an equally sharp-jawed
role as the recently reverted Lodge
Chairperson could make up for the
tragic Star Wars oversight.
The Unspoken Name (Pledged)
Other considerations included
Michael Rooker and Michael Chiklis,
but although they both have the prominent lack of hair and bad-assitude,
neither can pull off a goatee like
Steve Austin and neither are quite
as available as wrestling’s former
bad boy.
