Tips for field Measuring
Tips for field
Measuring
NOMMA / NEF

Primary Thoughts (Intentions)
• Increase accuracy of field measures to
ultimately reduce shop rework and
expensive time in the field
•
Increase number of times when only one
person is required for field measures
(including outside our local region)
•
Review and incorporate new technology as it
comes available
Purpose of class

Show techniques & tools for measuring;
Elevations of stairs / ramps
Irregular shape measuring
programs & apps for measuring
Things to notice when field measuring

You type in 2 known dimensions of the 5 available
Hit “done” the program calculates the rest of the
dimensions
Laser Distance Measures

Tape measure
With the LCD display you
are able to see the target dot
in outside / lit up / distant
targets
Trig functions / out of level
compensation
Angle meter
Progressive measuring
No need for some one to
hold the “dumb end” of tape
measure

Plumb & level laser lines
Self leveling or can be locked
for out of level reference lines
“virtual” chalk / reference
lines
“virtual walls”
Plumb bob
Plumb , level , square layout
beams
Combines line levels & PLS5
Probably my most used laser
tool
Range meter / & trig functions
Measuring curves from reference line
Point to point measurements for
measuring , , creates triangulation ,
arcs to duplicate
Measuring for basic stairs

Horizontal line
of line laser &
tape measure
used for
elevations
Vertical line &
tape measure
for horizontal
distances
Tape measure
for diagonal
measurements
Smart level for
pitch reference
Photos / documentation
Things to notice when measuring
!
!
!
!
Offsets in wall/
uneven surfaces
Difference from
bottom of doors to
door openings etc
Electric switches /
outlets
Backing in wall
?/mounting surface
Use measuring template/reminder
General Best Practices
Use good equipment and outfit the shop to replicate
where practical (i.e. Digital protractors, Smart Levels,
etc.
! Take general and specific photos
! Always take photos of important items, areas
! Always take check measures to verify your other
measures
! Add measures to photos if possible
! If passing to another person, a video walkwalk-thru is
helpful
! Establish control lines or reference points to start from
! Make up generic, specific job measurement templates
(i.e. stairs, doors, gate openings, etc.), so items are not
forgotten
!
