THE
SPOTLIGHT
THIS
MONTH
Membership Director, Christine Baker-Perry
I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT I was born
and raised in a military family, as my
Dad was a United States Marine. All
the men in our family including my
grandfathers, uncles and cousins were
in the military.
My Dad retired as a Master Sergeant in the Marines after 22 years
and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. As a military family we moved
every three years. So, I got used to
making new friends wherever I went
and still love meeting new people,
which is why my job is so perfect.
My Mom and I raised my niece
Elizabeth starting when she was nine
months old. She is now a NICU
nurse in Phoenix and I couldn’t be
prouder.
It was only a few weeks after I
graduated from high school in Minnesota that I knew I wanted to get out
of the cold weather in Grand Rapids.
We decided we wanted to move to
Tucson, so we packed up the car and
drove down here arriving on July 4,
1983. Talk about one extreme to another, it was a bit of a shock. We had
a car with a really good heater but no
air conditioner, because in MN you
open your window for cool air.
After working as a waitress for
several years, Ventana Canyon hired
me to train their wait staff.
I did that for about six months all
the while going to school to get my
degree as a paralegal. I was four
months away from graduation, when I
was asked to interview for the Executive Administrative Assistant position.
I got the position, but there was one
catch, the General Manager asked
that I give her a year before leaving Ventana to pursue my career as a
paralegal. Needless to say, I got the
promotion to my first desk job, and
yes, I got my degree as well.
With my new position, I was not
only the assistant to the General
Manager, but also to the Director of
Catering, Director of Sales, Human
Resources, the Golf Department and
the Tennis Department. I was busy to
say the least!
I got to know the members over
the nine and a half years I had that
position. (Staying well over the one
year what was expected of me).
Then my dream job came open
when our Membership Director was
leaving the Club and moving out of
state. I was promoted to be your next
Membership Director at Ventana Canyon. That was 1998.
Our first son Tristan, was born
at 26 weeks. As you can imagine
Tristan had some tough struggles
ahead of him, everyday brought some
heart wrenching moments. We took
it one day at a time, said a lot of
prayers, and he is now a very happy
13 year old with Cerebral Palsy and
the best outlook on life.
Our second son Michael, came
four years later healthy and happy,
and he will soon be 10 years old.
I have now been at Ventana Canyon for 23 years and love being your
Membership Director. You have
become a part of my family and I care
for each and everyone of you. So
many of you have touched my heart
throughout the years and will always
hold a special place there.
I look forward to recruiting many
more new members and hopefully
one day retire from Ventana Canyon.

POOL NEWS
We have had a fairly quiet winter at the pool, but spring is just around the corner, which means the pool will soon be busy again. The next few months will
see changes at the pool with a new deck, a resurfaced kids pool and updates to
locker rooms. We have also ordered a lift for the pool to make handicap pool
access easier.
Lap lanes are open daily between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., however there are busy
times each day. The busiest hours are between 8 and 10 a.m. each weekday and
in the afternoon between 3:30-5:30 p.m. when the swim team uses 6 lanes.
The Masters’ swim team still swims weekdays at 9:00 a.m. We always welcome
new members to our team. There are about 15-20 members on the team, depending on the weather!
Lisa and Janna, (our Masters’ team coach), are now offering swim lessons to
tri-athletes who want to improve their swimming skills. We are offering private
and group lessons. If you and your friends are training to compete and swimming is your “weakest link,” we can help! Please call ext 336 for more information.
The winter swim team age groups is growing as the weather warms up. Our
new coach, Kristin Studley, is doing a very good job with our young swimmers. She has worked very hard on the children’s skills and they are competing quite well. All of our swimmers continue to improve with two swimmers
qualifying for state championships at a recent meet. Emma Dowe, Wally’s
daughter, swam the race of her life at a recent meet and won the 25 breaststroke!

ACBL Charity Bridge at Ventana
Our game continues to grow!! Our
players are very complimentary about
the food and the pricing. We are working
hard to make it a very friendly, fun game
while keeping within ACBL guidelines for
sanctioned games.
As many of you know, we had classes
on Thursday morning at the Club for several years. When we started the Thursday game, it took all our energy to do
that so classes were moved to Finisterra.
We are going to have intermediate classes
at the Club again beginning on Wednesday, January 11th. Classes will be from
9:45 to 11:45 a.m. As always, we will
order lunch before we start class and it
will be “on
the table”
when we
break at
11:45
a.m. We
are most
impressed
with our
instruc-
tor, Joan Ryan, who started with us in
September. She is ACBL Certified and
has a beautiful teaching style and fabulous
handouts. We have been studying topics
that the students requested. All the details are on our website: www.TucsonCharityBridge.com Please note we are
also starting beginner classes at Streams
Charity Bridge on Thursday mornings so
please tell anyone who is interested in
learning this crazy, addicting game.
Our November Charity was Ronald
McDonald House of Tucson to whom we
donated $365. We have now donated a
total of $4,050 to local charities. Literacy Volunteers is our charity for the
month of December – we expect December to be our largest donation ever
thanks to the way our games are growing. Hope you can come help us support
them!!
Please e-mail Caron at [email protected] to make reservations
so the Staff will have the appropriate
number of playing tables set up. If you
don’t have a partner, we will find one for
you. Please arrive at the game a little
early so that the Staff can take your orders prior to the game starting promptly
at 5:00. If you have any questions about
Ventana Charity Bridge, please contact
[email protected]
We have no “Hint” for this month.
We just want to thank all the Ventana
Members and Guests who support our
game by coming to play each week. We
also want to send a big thank you to the
wonderful staff at Ventana who serve us
so graciously every Monday night. A
particularly big thanks to George White
and Chef John who have come up with
a menu plan and pricing that is working
very well for everyone. We enjoy eating
in our lovely dining room now which
is also a great change. As it says on our
website, “We give from our hearts”.
Now we want to say “Thanks a million
to all of you from the bottom of our
hearts”!!

How important is it to keep your
balance moving forward and stay
on your toes?
Just as any other sport will teach,
movement and balance are critical
to success. Forward momentum
not only improves reaction ability, but helps you maintain solid
contact with the ball. For example, when players come to the
net to volley, if you lean back you
lose momentum and the racquet
becomes defensive. By moving on
the balls of your feet, your balance is thrown forward and as you
move to strike the ball, the racquet
is more solid as it moves in to hit
the ball, not just rebound the ball
off the strings.
If you are having a hard time
making solid contact on your
shots, check your balance and
make sure you are moving forward
to hit the ball. You will notice a
big difference in your game!

GROUNDS
New Railing Installed Leading Up To #3 Mountain
WE HAVE HAD A VERY GOOD START to the
winter rainy season. December rainfall
totaled 2.7” and
January is at
.40” as of 1/18.
Last winter we
received 0”.
Rainfall for
2011 finished at
10.54” which is
well below our
annual average
of 14.20”.
Jack Frost
Wally Dowe
continues to visit
us. There have been 31 frost delays
this golf season as of January 18th. We
average 47 frost delays each golf season.
Frost season typically will last until about
mid-February but we can still expect an
occasional frost through March.
The golf courses have responded well
to the winter rainfall. As the temperatures increase heading into spring the
Ryegrass will grow very well. We will
begin to lower the height of cut in the
fairways, approaches, tees, collars and
roughs to begin the transition process
back to Bermudagrass. The fairway
lies will start to get a little tighter as the
height of cut is lowered.
A guardrail has been installed along
the cartpath leading up to #3 Mountain
tees. The railing was installed to prevent any future accidents involving golf
carts driving over the cartpath curb. The
curb will definitely stop any stray golf
carts from going off the cartpath. Please
continue to use caution when driving golf
carts around the property.
You may have noticed new irrigation
controllers being installed on the golf
courses. The capital budget approved
10 new controllers this year. We have
replaced 49 controllers over the last few
years and now only have 7 left to replace.
The controllers are used to operate the
irrigation system out on the golf courses.
Each controller costs almost $3,500.
New soil storage bins were also approved
this year and have been completed. This
will allow a more organized and cleaner
storage system for the different sands,
mulch and other materials that are used
on the courses.
Dewar’s & Divots dates have been
scheduled for the remaining season –
Monday, February 20, Monday, March
5 and Monday, April 2. Please join us
at 3:45 p.m. in the Ventana Bar for a
complimentary drink. We will head out
onto the golf courses at 4pm. We usually
finish around 5:30 p.m. We look forward
to seeing you there!
As a reminder please remember to fill
your divots, repair your ballmarks and
avoid high traffic areas with your golf
carts.

Scoring within the Red Zone
In football the scoring area, or “red zone”, is within twenty yards from
the goal line. For golfers the red zone is within 100 yards from the green
and contributes to 60-65% of your gross score for any given round. Regardless of the your handicap, developing your skills within 100 yards is
the easiest way to take strokes off your score.
I recommend spending part of your practice time simulating what
you encounter on the golf course and learn how to adjust to the terrain.
For example, a bunker shot to a front pin, a pitch over a ridge or an uphill chip from the collar of the green. A training strategy that you could
practice is to use one golf ball from different locations, or use the same
location but hit to a variety of targets. In addition, hit shots from slopes,
tight lies or clumpy grass. Hitting a bucket of balls from one location to the same pin
will do little to improve your touch, feel, and imagination; it will only ingrain the good
or bad technique you may have. This training method will strengthen your skills and
enhance your ability to score.
You can practice your form while developing your skills simultaneously. I am demonstrating three different shots within twenty yards from three separate locations. In
comparing each shot, notice how my follow-through has subtle differences. My body
has rotated to a finish; however, the clubhead is in a different location due to the type of
shot I executed. Notice the height of the clubhead (blue square) in the finish because it
corresponds to the amount of carry and roll that I needed. On the chip shot I wanted
minimum carry but maximum roll so I selected a 9-iron and applied a small pivot with
passive hands. In the pitch shot I used a 55° sand wedge and added some wrist hinge
to carry the ridge. With the sand shot to the front pin I am using a 60° wedge for
maximum height to get the golf ball (red arrow) over the front lip of the bunker and
stop quickly. You can see that my body rotation and wrist hinge (yellow circle) varies from shot to shot.
I challenge you to get better in the red zone. By doing so, you will become a happier better golfer!
John Basden, PGA
TECH TALK
To score in the red zone on the football field you need to have a quarterback, running back, and receivers that can all handle their specific assignments on any given play. In golf, you need the scoring tools (wedges) that can handle all types of turf and sand conditions, lies, and yardages. There are two faults that I consistently encounter in students equipment that inhibits them from
being able to handle all of the different situations you encounter on the course.
The first and easiest to remedy is the gaping between wedges. Since we spend the majority of our shots around the
green, we should have a variety of clubs to choose from so that we have very little to manipulate. If you have a pitching
wedge that flies 110 yards and your next wedge is a sand wedge that flies 70, what do you do from 85 yards? Consider
adding a gap wedge and taking out a long iron or fairway wood.
The second error I find amongst most players scoring wedges is a lack of bounce. Bounce it was prevents the club from
digging into the turf. In an effort to prevent the club from digging, the player will either hit the shot with their center of
gravity behind the ball or “scoop” the club through impact. Without enough bounce, the player is unable to hit down on
the ball properly thus resulting in fat or thin shots. I admit that I once adhered to playing low bounce wedges because
of our firmer, tighter turf and sand. However, I have since switched to a 60 degree lob wedge with 18 degrees of bounce
and I have seen a tremendous improvement in the performance of my wedge and quality of shots. Get fit for your set of
wedges for both loft (gaping) and bounce and you will have the tools necessary to score!

New Recycling Initiative Styrofoam Cups
Ventana Canyon Golf & Racquet Club has implemented
a recycle program for Styrofoam Cups. We have identified the Club and Resort stage, the cart storage areas and
the Men’s and Ladies locker rooms as the highest volume
areas for Styrofoam usage. Empty Styrofoam cups will
be stacked in the blue recycle containers and disposed of
through our recycle pickup. Members can help with this
program by leaving the Styrofoam cups in the club golf
carts or by disposing of empty cups only in a blue recycle
bin. Thank you for your assistance with this new initiative.

Posting Summer Scores
In an attempt to maintain a current and accurate handicap index it is important to post all of your scores in a
timely manner. Those of you who leave for the summer
and play within another association are still required to
post your scores on the AGA system. While it is acceptable to bring them back at the end of the season for posting, there is an easier method. Each of your associations
may be linked together so that your scores post on both
systems simultaneously. At each of the handicap terminals (men’s and women’s locker room and golf shop)
there will be an information sheet requesting your away
club name and state, the association name (i.e. Chicago
District Golf Association), and your association number.
If you wish to link your associations, please provide this
information and the golf staff will set up the link to the
AGA system. It is important that you also provide your
away club with your AGA information so that they can
also link to the AGA system. Once each side has linked
your handicap information together, scores will be
posted on each system and your handicap index remain
current and accurate throughout the year.

forward to a full field of 60 teams.
Thanks to financial support from the Men's Golf Association and the Ventana Canyon Alliance, we are now able
to offer the same great event at a reduced entry fee of $950 per team; a $150 savings over the past few years. Included in
the entry fee is 54-holes of tournament golf, practice round, optional horserace, scheduled breakfasts and lunches, stag
dinner, closing reception with guest and $200 per team in TaylorMade/Adidas shop credits (for purchases at wholesale

first place, Helene Miron and Judy
Pease; second place, Pat Wendel and
Linda Duffer; third place, Molly Drybrough and Brooke Suffecool; fourth
place, Tornie MacKay; and fifth place,
Jacque Grote and Paula Golden.
The winners of our January 9 "Tosses for Pops" competition, with golf
ball tosses instead of handicap strokes,
were first place, Toni McWilliams, Pat
Wendel, Dee Woodford, and Sondra
Annon; second place, Paula Golden,
Sonia Labatt, Anne Northrup, and
Debbie Kay; third place, Aimee Poll,
Brooke Suffecool, Jacque Grote, and
Lois Coleman; and fourth place, Linda
Cormany, Carol Koretz, Molly Drybrough, and Rhona Stern. The highlight of the competition was Debbie
Kay's "hole in one" on Mountain 16
thanks to her toss. In a shamble format, Sonia Labatt hit the best tee shot
of the team on that hole. Debbie then
tossed her ball from that spot from off
the green into the hole, and her toss
did not count as a stroke on her score.
These fun events are planned by our
terrific pro, Aaron Aguilar.
Niners should continue to sign up
at least 8 days before each Monday's
play. In addition to our regular Monday events, we will also have recurring
Wednesday 3 p.m. tee times set up for
the Niners who wish to play together
on Wednesday afternoons. Sign up
on the tee sheet every Tuesday for
Wednesday play or call the golf shop.
Enjoy your February golfing here at

FITNESS
Does Metabolism Affect Weight Gain? Part 2
Get moving!
Just 30 minutes a day of moderately
intense exercise 5 days a week can
burn 1,000 calories a week. About 15
pounds a year. Higher intensity workouts, such as jogging or stairclimber,
may have an additional benefit which
is increasing your resting metabolic
rate after a workout.
Eat more often!
The American Dietetic Association
recommends eating three meals a day
and one or two snacks in between.
“Studies suggest that eating smaller,
more frequent meals does increase
your metabolism slightly,” says dietician Carmen Roberts. Choose
healthy snacks , such as fruit or
yogurt, and don’t increase your total
caloric intake.
Eat Breakfast!
A bowl of high fiber cereal in your
system will make it less likely to grab
a danish later on! Studies suggest that
it gets your metabolism going. “When
you haven’t eaten all night your body
is in sluggish mode,” says Carmen
Roberts.

Consume enough protein!
Your body needs a combination
of carbohydrates, protein and fat
every day. Protein is especially important for people who want to lose
weight. Your body uses extra calories
digesting protein as it is the hardest
food source to break down. Getting enough protein ensures that any
weight loss comes from fat and not
muscle. The RDA for protein is 56
grams for adult males and 46 grams
for adult females. Don’t overdo the
protein though as it can be hard on
the kidneys and liver and may weaken
bone.
Drink plenty of water!
Your body runs more effectively if
it is well hydrated, that includes your
metabolism.
Don’t Crash Diet!
If you go on a very low calorie diet
your body will go into starvation
mode. This will slow your metabolism to make full use of every calorie
consumed.
Turn down the heat!
Though there is no need to be uncomfortable, lowering the thermostat
a couple of degrees in the winter will
burn a few extra calories and reduce
your heating bills!
To sum up!
The best approach to weight loss still
remains the same: Increase activity.
Decrease caloric intake!!!! By following the metabolism-boosting pointers
above may help you have an easier
time keeping those extra pounds from
creeping up on you!
Get plenty of sleep!
Not enough sleep can boost levels of
the hormone ghrelin, which research
shows can make you hungrier, slow
your metabolism and promote fat
retention. In one study, individuals
getting 5 1/2 hours of sleep per night
lost only half as much weight as those
who got 8 1/2 hours of sleep per night.
